• getting a tiled image collection on the iPad (deepzoom)

  I have a set of tiled image collections created via microsoft's deep zoom composer, and a silverlight app that currently consumes them for display via MultiScaleImage - it's all working pretty well - I'd just like to get some experience with iPad programming and have a couple of ideas for some ipad applications. All my ideas rely on me being able to display/manipulate these tiled image sets (on the iPad). I just picked up a iMac to facilitate this. I'm not seeing any objective-c / cocoa-touch libraries for this though, so am assuming I will have to roll my own. (Saw the seadragon ajax component, which is pretty slick, but I'm dealing with collections here, which it doesn't support. I would also like to roll this as a native app just to get the experience). The only open source project I found for displaying/manipulating the tiled image sets was Openzoom -a flash component. I'm not to familiar with actionscript either (python, java, c#, and c are the only languages I have really used), but briefly inspecting the code I didn't really have any issues with it and can probably use it for hints on how to swap the tiles in and out, etc.. But, as I'm pretty new to obj-c/cocoa-touch, some pointers in the right direction would be appreciated. 1) Are there any other projects out there I am missing, or is openzoom my best bet for some reference? 2) Should I be trying to do this display in the UIKit framework, or should I do it as an OpenGL display? 3) Any other suggestions/pointers that I didn't think to ask.

• Need help in tuning a sql-query

  Hello, i need some help to boost this SQL-Statement. The execution time is around 125ms. During the runtime of my program this sql (better: equally structured sqls for different tables) will be called 300.000 times. The average row count in the tables lies around 10.000.000 rows and new rows (updates/inserts) will be added with a timestamp each day. Data which are interesting for this particular export-program lies in the last 1-3 days. Maybe this is helpful for an index to create. The data i need is the current valid row for a given id and the forerunner datarow to get the updates (if exists). We use a Oracle 11g database and Dot.Net Framework 3.5 SQL-Statement to boost: select ID_SOMETHING, -- Number(12) ID_CONTRIBUTOR, -- Char(4 Byte) DATE_VALID_FROM, -- DATE DATE_VALID_TO -- DATE from TBL_SOMETHING XID where ID_SOMETHING = :ID_INSTRUMENT and ID_CONTRIBUTOR = :ID_CONTRIBUTOR and DATE_VALID_FROM <= :EXPORT_DATE and DATE_VALID_TO >= :EXPORT_DATE order by DATE_VALID_FROM asc; Here i uploaded the current Explain-Plan for this query. I'm not a database expert so i don't know which index-type would fit best for this requirement. I have seen that there are many different possible index-types which could be applied. Maybe Oracle Optimizer Hints are helpful, too. Does anyone has a good idea for tuning this sql or can point me in a right direction?

• Wordpress XML-RPC call from Objective C: wp.newComment

  I'm using Eric Czarny's Cocoa XML-RPC framework to make a call to the Wordpress API's. I've downloaded the sample app from Wordpress which gives some good examples. Unfortunately the good examples are for every call EXCEPT wp.newComment. I'm trying to post a comment using the code below and I keep getting an error with a localized description that tells me to check my input parameters. I've checked and rechecked and I don't understand what is wrong. Any ideas? • Web-based game in Python + Django and client browser polling

  I am creating a text-based game that implements a basic model in which multiple (10+) players interact with data and one moderator watches them and sets certain environmental statistics that affect gameplay. Recently I have begun to familiarize myself with Django. It seems to me that it would be an excellent tool for creating a game quickly, particularly because the nature of my game depends largely on sets of data (which lends itself quite well to a database). I am wondering how to "push" changes made by the game moderator to the players (for example, the moderator can decide to display an image to all players). The game is turn-based, not real-time, but certain messages need to be pushed out in roughly real-time. My thoughts: I could have each player's browser poll a status periodically (say, every 30 seconds) to see if there is a message from a moderator. But this forces a lag and means different players might receive it at different times. And reducing this interval to <10 seems like a bad idea for the server. Is there a better way to inform clients of changes? Would you suggest something other than using a web framework like Django? Thanks!

I'm new to python and as I learn the language I've managed to write a little MVC framework running in its own light-weight-WSGI-like server. • Sending jQuery.ajax data simultaneous to a form submit

  I have a bit of a conundrum. I have a form which has numerous fields. There is one field for links where you enter a link, click an add button, and the link(using jQuery) gets added to a link_array. I want this array to be sent via the jQuery.ajax method when the form is submitted. If I send the link_array using $.ajax like this: $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "add_stock", dataType: "json", data: { "links": link_array } }); when the add link button is selected the data goes no problem to the correct place and gets put in the db correctly. If I bind the above function to the submit form button using $(#stock_form).submit(..... then the rest of the form data is sent but not the link_array. I can obviously pass the link array back into a hidden field in HTML but then I'd have to unpack the array into comma separate values and break the comma-separated string apart in PHP. It just seems 100X easier to unpack the Javascript array in PHP without an other fuss. So, how is it that you can send an array from javascript using $.ajax concurrent to the rest of the $_POST data in HTML? Please note that I'm using Kohana 3.0 framework but really that shouldn't make a difference, what I want to do is add this js array to the $_POST array that is already going. Thanks!

• Going from small to medium sized websites.

  I've been coding websites for a couple of years now, mostly in php and xhtml. I come from the design world, but I'm proud of doing standart compliant websites and great interfaces. Also used Wordpress and loved it. Most of the time there were really simple commercial websites, with no database included, where everything is done from scratch. Every page is parsed through an index?page=xxx and But I have a few prospects that are larger websites (let's call them 'medium sized websites') where I feel I'm lacking the following: How to dispach or render the pages (MVC controller instead of index?page=???) Proper page hierarchy and easy breadcrumbs implementation Auto generation of navigation menu, or an easy way to maintain them? Clean URLs Form validation Easy database support I really don't know if I should be looking into php scripts, and refine my skills or get into a CMS (like drupal) or a PHP framework. I found Wordpress very assuring and didn't feel trapped into crazy conventions, but I feel is not the right tool for this. I hate the CMS Page with the big textbox as I am used to code every page by hand my pages are not a title and a textbox. Got the feeling? My php skills are sort of medium/low still, but I would like to hear some thoughts of what I should learn to take the next step!

• Javascript: Multiple mouseout events triggered

  I'm aware of the different event models in Javascript (the WC3 model versus the Microsoft model), as well as the difference between bubbling and capturing. However, after a few hours reading various articles about this issue, I'm still unsure how to properly code the following seemingly simple behavior: If I have an outer div and an inner div element, I want a single mouse-out event to be triggered when the mouse leaves the outer-div. When the mouse crosses from the inner-div to the outer-div, nothing should happen, and when the mouse crosses from the outer-div to the inner-div nothing should happen. The event should only fire if the mouse moves from the outer-div to the surrounding page. <div id="outer" style = "width:20em; height:20em; border:1px solid #F00" align = "center" onmouseout="alert('mouseout event!')" > <div id="inner" style = "width:18em; height:18em; border:1px solid #000"></div> </div> Now, if I place the "mouseout" event on the outer-div, two mouse-out events are fired when the mouse moves from the inner-div to the surrounding page, because the event fires once when the mouse moves from inner to outer, and then again when it moves from outer to the surrounding page. I know I can cancel the event using ev.stopPropagation(), so I tried registering an event handler with the inner-div to cancel the event propagation. However, this won't prevent the event from firing when the mouse moves from the outer-div to the inner-div. So, unless I'm overlooking something, it seems to me this behavior can't be accomplished without complex mouse-tracking functions. In the future, I plan to reimplement a lot of this code using a more advanced framework, like JQuery, but for now, I'm wondering if there is a simple way to implement the above behavior in regular Javascript.

• What Scheme Does Ghuloum Use?

  I'm trying to work my way through Compilers: Backend to Frontend (and Back to Front Again) by Abdulaziz Ghuloum. It seems abbreviated from what one would expect in a full course/seminar, so I'm trying to fill in the pieces myself. For instance, I have tried to use his testing framework in the R5RS flavor of DrScheme, but it doesn't seem to like the macro stuff: src/ghuloum/tests/tests-driver.scm:6:4: read: illegal use of open square bracket I've read his intro paper on the course, An Incremental Approach to Compiler Construction, which gives a great overview of the techniques used, and mentions a couple of Schemes with features one might want to implement for 'extra credit', but he doesn't mention the Scheme he uses in the course. Update I'm still digging into the original question (investigating options such as Petit Scheme suggested by Eli below), but found an interesting link relating to Gholoum's work, so I am including it here. [Ikarus Scheme](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ikarus_(Scheme_implementation)) is the actual implementation of Ghuloum's ideas, and appears to have been part of his Ph.D. work. It's supposed to be one of the first implementations of R6RS. I'm trying to install Ikarus now, but the configure script doesn't want to recognize my system's install of libgmp.so, so my problems are still unresolved. • Matlab and MrVista

  I'm new to MATLAB and mrVista. I'm running Matlab Version 7.8.0.347 (R2009a) 32-bit(win32) from February 12, 2009 OS is Windows 7 Professional I downloaded the most recent MrVista_hourly.zip and extracted it into my C:\Program_Files_(x86)\MATLAB directory. I think I need to run mrvInstall, but when I do, I get the following: EDU>> mrvInstall Checking VISATSOFT installation. Windows, 32-bit, installation Checking and possibly installing .NET framework. This can take several minutes Checking for visualization library (.dll) files. You are missing msvcp70.dll. So, I'm completely lost at this point. Do I just need to download msvcp70.dll from the net? If so, is there a safe place to download it from? If there's some other way I'm supposed to get mrVista to work from MATLAB, instead of mrvInstall, please let me know that. • Controlling the order of PicoContainer startup

  I have been tasked with doing some refactoring work on how we start up applications. Basically we have a bunch of console apps which were depending on the GUI application startup code, causing bogus dependencies which have kick-on effects for which libraries we need to ship, and which dependencies other modules need to declare. So I have written a simple startup framework where I basically just throw a bunch of Runnable objects into a list and then run them in order - and it works. But I was thinking - we already have PicoContainer in our project, so all these things that need to be run on startup could potentially be thrown into a PicoContainer, and if they implement Startable they will start... But in some cases we want to specify the ordering between them. For example, I don't want any other component writing to the log before we write a header into the log indicating that the application is starting up. I know I can introduce ordering by introducing injection dependencies, but this feels like a hack in this case - I would need to add the log header writer as a dependency for every other component which might write to the log, which isn't great at all. Nonetheless it seems like it would be nice to control the order of PicoContainer startup, so is there perhaps some other way? Alternatively I could just keep it simple and stick to my list of Runnable. It does, after all, work.

  Hi everyone, I'm not sure how to ask my question in a succinct way, so I'll start with examples and expand from there. I am working with VBA, but I think this problem is non language specific and would only require a bright mind that can provide a pseudo code framework. Thanks in advance for the help! Example: I have 3 Character Arrays Like So: Arr_1 = [X,Y,Z] Arr_2 = [A,B] Arr_3 = [1,2,3,4] I would like to generate ALL possible permutations of the character arrays like so: XA1 XA2 XA3 XA4 XB1 XB2 XB3 XB4 YA1 YA2 . . . ZB3 ZB4 This can be easily solved using 3 while loops or for loops. My question is how do I solve for this if the # of arrays is unknown and the length of each array is unknown? So as an example with 4 character arrays: Arr_1 = [X,Y,Z] Arr_2 = [A,B] Arr_3 = [1,2,3,4] Arr_4 = [a,b] I would need to generate: XA1a XA1b XA2a XA2b XA3a XA3b XA4a XA4b . . . ZB4a ZB4b So the Generalized Example would be: Arr_1 = [...] Arr_2 = [...] Arr_3 = [...] . . . Arr_x = [...] Is there a way to structure a function that will generate an unknown number of loops and loop through the length of each array to generate the permutations?   I'm attempting to execute an uninstaller (written in AppleScript) through AuthorizationExecuteWithPrivileges. Am I going about this all wrong? I just want to run the equivalent of "sudo /usr/bin/osascript ..." Edit: FWIW, the first line that causes the "execution error" is: set userAppSupportPath to (POSIX path of (path to application support folder from user domain)) However, even with an empty script (on run argv, end run and that's it) I still get the 'gdut' message.

  This is the exact same question as this one: “Could not find type” error loading a form in the Designer Before anyone goes closing my question please read that one. You will realize that it did not get a real answer. I hope to get a full answer (rather than a workaround) from this question. When I create a class that descends from Control and uses generics, that class fails to load in the designer. Here is and example: class OwnerDrawnListBox<T> : System.Windows.Forms.Control { private readonly List<T> _items; // Other list box private stuff here public OwnerDrawnListBox() { _items = new List<T>(); } // More List box code } I then use this in my designer: private OwnerDrawnListBox<Bag> lstAvailable; private void InitializeComponent() { // Used to be System.Windows.Forms.ListBox(); this.lstAvailable = new ARUP.ScanTrack.Mobile.OwnerDrawnListBox<Bag>(); // Other items } If the generic class is subclassed (to a non-generic) then the referenced question says that it works fine (ie if I made Class BagOwnerDrawListBox: OwnerDrawnListBox<Bag>). What I want to know is there a way to "fix" this so that the generic item is accepted by the designer? Side Note: I am using the Compact Framework.

• GUI for generating XML

  Hello. Does anybody know of GUIs for generating XMLs? This means the user will not be presented with an IDE with support for XML for him to type XML codes. This would be helpful for non-technical people using the system. I know this sounds easy, given many libraries that can help in generating XMLs. The issue here is that the schema is really that flexible rather than being straightforward like representing books in a library with their properties. Imagine HTML, where we can create font tags inside a body, a table, a div, or nested even within itself. The solution is a WYSIWYG application that allows user to generate html codes (XML). However, that is good for XML applied in webpages since they involve visual aspect and design. My application of XML would focus on representing some conceptual and computational definitions, much like sql-like syntax, but more than that. I'm actually after the approach or previous works done or tried, although having a library/working framework for that would be better. Btw, I'm using Java for this project. Currently, I'm just thinking of presenting element tags where user will be able to drag and drop them and nest them with each other. And perhaps, assist them through a forms in inputing values for XML attributes. I'm still hoping if there are better ideas from the community. Thank you.

• Complex derived attributes in Django models

  What I want to do is implement submission scoring for a site with users voting on the content, much like in e.g. reddit (see the 'hot' function in http://code.reddit.com/browser/sql/functions.sql). My submission model currently keeps track of up and down vote totals. Currently, when a user votes I create and save a related Vote object and then use F() expressions to update the Submission object's voting totals. The problem is that I want to update the score for the submission at the same time, but F() expressions are limited to only simple operations (it's missing support for log(), date_part(), sign() etc.) From my limited experience with Django I can see 4 options here: extend F() somehow (haven't looked at the code yet) to support the missing SQL functions; this is my preferred option and seems to fit within the Django framework the best define a scoring function (much like reddit's 'hot' function) in my database, and have Django use the value of that function for the value of the score field; as far as I can tell, #2 is not possible wrap my two step voting process in a suitably isolated transaction so that I can calculate the voting totals in Python and then update the Submission's voting totals without fear that another vote against the submission could be added/changed in the meantime; I'm hesitant to take this route because it seems overly complex - what is a "suitably isolated transaction" in this case anyway? use raw SQL; I would prefer to avoid this entirely -- what's the point of an ORM if I have to revert to SQL for such a common use case as this! (Note that this coming from somebody who loves sprocs, but is using Django for ease of development.) Before I embark on this mission to extend F() (which I'm not sure is even possible), am I about to reinvent the wheel? Is there a more standard way to do this? It seems like such a common use case and yet in an hour of searching I have yet to find a common solution...

  I have a PL/SQL procedure which sets some variable in user session, like the following:- Dbms_Session.Set_Context( NAMESPACE =>'MY_CTX', ATTRIBUTE => 'FLAG_NAME', Value => 'some value'); Just after this (in the same procedure), I try to read the value of this flag, using:- SYS_CONTEXT('MY_CTX', 'FLAG_NAME'); The above returns nothing. How did the DB lose this value? The weirder part is that if I invoke this proc directly from Oracle SQL Developer then it works. It doesn't work when I invoke this proc from my web application from callable statement. --EDIT-- Added an example as to how we are invoking the proc from our Java code.   I'm trying to POST a http request using ajax, but getting a response from the apache server using modsec_audit that: "POST request must have a Content-Length header." I do not want to disable this in modsec_audit. This occurs only in firefox, and not IE. Further, I switched to using a POST rather than a GET to keep IE from caching my results.   I'm having some problems with one webservice that i'm working with. I generated a proxy class with wsdl.exe that comes with .net framework. But that webservice return a header that isnt not mapped by the wsdl. I must map the header sop because it contains some properties that i have to read and work with. how can i read the soap's header collection? • JSESSIONID collision between two servers on same ip but different ports

  I've got a situation where I have two different webapps running on a single server, using different ports. They're both running Java's Jetty servlet container, so they both use a cookie parameter named JSESSIONID to track the session id. These two webapps are fighting over the session id. Open a Firefox tab, and go to WebApp1 WebApp1's HTTP response has a set-cookie header with JSESSIONID=1 Firefox now has a Cookie header with JSESSIONID=1 in all it's HTTP requests to WebApp1 Open a second Firefox tab, and go to WebApp2 The HTTP reqeust to WebApp2 also has a Cookie header with JSESSIONID=1, but in the doGet, when I call req.getSession(false); I get null. And if I call req.getSession(true) I get a new Session object, but then the HTTP response from WebApp2 has a set-cookie header with JSESSIONID=20 Now, WebApp2 has a working Session, but WebApp1's session is gone. Going to WebApp1 will give me a new session, blowing away WebApp2's session. Continue forever So the Sessions are thrashing between each web app. I'd really like for the req.getSession(false) to return a valid session if there's already a JSESSIONID cookie defined. One option is to basically reimplement the Session framework with a HashMap and cookies called WEBAPP1SESSIONID and WEBAPP2SESSIONID, but that sucks, and means I'll have to hack the new Session stuff into ActionServlet and a few other places. This must be a problem others have encountered. Is Jetty's HttpServletRequest.getSession(boolean) just crappy?

• Caching sitemaps in django

This one was bigger that 1MB, so storing into cache failed: >7 SERVER_ERROR object too large for cache The problem is that django has an automated way of deciding when it should divide the sitemap file into smalled ones. According to the docs (http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/contrib/sitemaps/): You should create an index file if one of your sitemaps has more than 50,000 URLs. In this case, Django will automatically paginate the sitemap, and the index will reflect that. What do you think would be the best way to enable caching sitemaps? - Hacking into django sitemaps framework to restrict a single sitemap size to, let's say, 10,000 records seems like the best idea. Why was 50,000 chosen in the first place? Google advice? random number? - Or maybe there is a way to allow memcached store bigger files? - Or perhaps onces saved, the sitemaps should be made available as static files? This would mean that instead of caching with memcached I'd have to manually store the results in the filesystem and retrieve them from there next time when the sitemap is requested (perhaps cleaning the directory daily in a cron job). All those seem very low level and I'm wondering if an obvious solution exists...

• Why does my IMultiBindingConverter get an array of strings when used to set TextBox.Text?

  Hi- I'm trying to use a MultiBinding with a converter where the child elements also have a converter. The XAML looks like so: <TextBlock> <TextBlock.Text> <MultiBinding Converter="{StaticResource localizedMessageConverter}" ConverterParameter="{x:Static res:Resources.RecordsFound}" > <Binding Converter="{StaticResource localizedMessageParameterConverter}" ConverterParameter="ALIAS" Path="Alias" Mode="OneWay" /> <Binding Converter="{StaticResource localizedMessageParameterConverter}" ConverterParameter="COUNT" Path="Count" Mode="OneWay" /> </MultiBinding> </TextBlock.Text> The problem I'm facing here is, whenever this is used with a TextBlock to specify the Text property, my IMultiValueConverter implementation gets an object collection of strings instead of the class returned by the IValueConverter. It seems that the ToString() method is called on the result of the inner converter and passed to the IMultiValueConverter. If used to specify the Content property of Label, all is well. It seems to me that the framework is assuming that the return type will be string, but why? I can see this for the MultiBinding since it should yield a result that is compatible with TextBlock.Text, but why would this also be the case for the Bindings inside a MultiBinding? If I remove the converter from the inner Binding elements, the native types are returned. In my case string and int.

• C# Byte[] to Url Friendly String

  Hello, I'm working on a quick captcha generator for a simple site I'm putting together, and I'm hoping to pass an encrypted key in the url of the page. I could probably do this as a query string parameter easy enough, but I'm hoping not too (just because nothing else runs off the query string)... My encryption code produces a byte[], which is then transformed using Convert.ToBase64String(byte[]) into a string. This string, however, is still not quite url friendly, as it can contain things like '/' and '='. Does anyone know of a better function in the .NET framework to convert a byte array to a url friendly string? I know all about System.Web.HttpUtility.UrlEncode() and its equivalents, however, they only work properly with query string parameters. If I url encode an '=' inside of the path, my web server brings back a 400 Bad Request error. Anyways, not a critical issue, but hoping someone can give me a nice solution **EDIT: Just to be absolutely sure exactly what I'm doing with the string, I figured I would supply a little more information. The byte[] that results from my encryption algorithm should be fed through some sort of algorithm to make it into a url friendly string. After this, it becomes the content of an XElement, which is then used as the source document for an XSLT transformation, and is used as a part of the href attribute for an anchor. I don't believe the xslt transformation is causing the issues, since what is coming through on the path appears to be an encoded query string parameter, but causes the HTTP 400 I've also tried HttpUtility.UrlPathEncode() on a base64 string, but that doesn't seem to do the trick either (I still end up with '/'s in my url)**
