• I Cannot retrieve ARPINSTALLLOCATION so we know where to install a new version

  I am trying to retrieve the ARPINSTALLLOCATION during the installation of a Major Upgrade version of the software. Following this info I managed to set the ARPINSTALLLOCATION to the custom path. However, retrieving it again isn't working.   I may be working on mission impossible here, but I seem to be getting close. I want to extend a ASP.NET control, and I want my code to be unit testable. Also, I'd like to be able to fake behaviors of a real Label (namely things like ID generation, etc), which a real Label can't do in an nUnit host. Here a working example that makes assertions on something that depends on a real base class and something that doesn't-- in a more realistic unit test, the test would depend on both --i.e. an ID existing and some custom behavior. • one table is shared between several websites

  I have a static table that's shared by several websites. By static, I mean that the data is read but never updated by the websites. Currently, all websites are served from the same server but that may change. I want to minimize the need for creating/maintaining this table for each of the websites, so I thought about turning it to an xml file that's stored in a shared library that all websites have access to. The problem is I use an ORM and use forign key constraints to ensure integrity of the ids used from that table, so by removing that table out of the MySQL database into an XML file, will this affect the integrity of the ids coming from that table? My table looks like this <table name="entry"> <column name="id" type="INTEGER" primaryKey="true" autoIncrement="true" /> <column name="title" type="VARCHAR" size="500" required="true" /> </table> and I use it as a foreign key in other tables <table name="refer"> <column name="id" type="INTEGER" primaryKey="true" autoIncrement="true" /> <column name="linkto" type="INTEGER"/> <foreign-key foreignTable="entry"> <reference local="linkto" foreign="id" /> </foreign-key> </table> So I'm wondering if I remove that table out of the database, is there a way to retain that referential integrity? And of course are these any other efficient ways to do the same thing? I just don't want to have to repeat that table for several websites.

  I am just following the tutorial about NerdDinner and was stuck because when I am implementing the "Index" View Template I got no data from it.   need help with logging all activities on a site as well as database changes. requirements: * should be in database * should be easily searchable by initiator (user name / session id), event (activity type) and event parameters i can think of a database design but either it involves a lot of tables (one per event) so i can log each of the parameters of an event in a separate field OR it involves one table with generic fields (7 int numeric and 7 text types) and log everything in one table with event type field determining what parameter got written where (and hoping that i don't need more than 7 fields of a certain type, or 8 or 9 or whatever number i choose)... example of entries (the usual things): [username] login failed @datetime [username] login successful @datetime [username] changed password @datetime, estimated security of password [low/ok/high/perfect] @datetime [username] clicked result [result number] [result id] after searching for [search string] and got [number of results] @datetime [username] clicked result [result number] [result id] after searching for [search string] and got [number of results] @datetime [username] changed profile name from [old name] to [new name] @datetime [username] verified name with [credit card type] credit card @datetime datbase table [table name] purged of old entries @datetime etc... so anyone dealt with this before? any best practices / links you can share? i've seen it done with the generic solution mentioned above, but somehow that goes against what i learned from database design, but as you can see the sheer number of events that need to be trackable (each user will be able to see this info) is giving me headaches, BUT i do LOVE the one event per table solution more than the generic one. any thoughts? edit: also, is there maybe an authoritative list of such (likely) events somewhere? thnx stack overflow says: the question you're asking appears subjective and is likely to be closed. my answer: probably is subjective, but it is directly related to my issue i have with designing a database / writing my code, so i'd welcome any help. also i tried narrowing down the ideas to 2 so hopefully one of these will prevail, unless there already is an established solution for these kinds of things.

• Good strategy for copying a "sliding window" of data from a table?

  I have a MySQL table from a third-party application that has millions of rows and only one index - the timestamp of each entry. Now I want to do some heavy self-joins and queries on the data using fields other than the timestamp. Doing the query on the original table would bring the database to a crawl, adding indexes to the table is not an option. Additionally, I only need entries that are newer than one week. My current strategy for doing the queries efficiently is to use a separate table (aux_table) that has the necessary indexes. My questions are: Is there another way to do the queries? and if not, How do I update the data in the indexed table efficiently? So far I have found two approaches for updating aux_table: Truncate aux_table and insert the desired data from the original table. Not very efficient because all the indexes must be re-crated. Check for the biggest timestamp in aux_table and insert all entries with a greater or equal timestamp from the original table. Occasionally drop older entries. Only copying entries with greater timestamp leads to dropped entries (because of entries with same timestamp that were inserted into the original table after the last update).

  I have a very weird probleme with mysqldb (mysql module for python). I have a file with queries for inserting records in tables. If I call the functions from the file, it works just fine. But when I try to call one of the functions from another file it throws me a _mysql_exception.InterfaceError: (0, '') I really don't get what I'm doing wrong here.. • Problems with rails and saving to the database.

  I've been having some difficulty in understanding the source of a problem. Below is a listing of the model classes. Essentially the goal is to have the ability to add sentences to the end of the story, or to add stories to an existing sentence_block. The Story method is as follows, and the associated show method for a sentence is also included. I'm trying to ensure that every time the view depicts show for a story, an unnecessary sentence_block and sentence isn't created, unless someone submits the form, I'm not really sure how to accomplish this. • Unable to persist objects in GAE JDO

  Hello Guys, I am completely fresh to both JDO and GAE, and have been struggling to get my data layer to persist any code at all! The issues I am facing may be very simple, but I just cant seem to find any a way no matter what solution I try. Firstly the problem: (Slightly simplified, but still contains all the info necessary) My data model is as such: User: (primary key) String emailID String firstName Car: (primary key) User user (primary key) String registration String model This was the initial datamodel. I implemented a CarPK object to get a composite primary key of the User and the registration. However that ran into a variety of issues. (Which i will save for another time/question) I then changed the design as such: User: (Unchanged) Car: (primary key) String fauxPK (here fauxPK = user.getEmailID() + SEP + registration) User user String registration String model This works fine for the user, and it can insert and retrieve user objects. However when i try to insert a Car Object, i get the following error: "Cannot have a java.lang.String primary key and be a child object" Found the following helpful link about it: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2063467/persist-list-of-objects Went to the link suggested there, that explains how to create Keys, however they keep talking about "Entity Groups" and "Entity Group Parents". But I cant seem to find any articles or sites that explain what are "Entity Group"s or an "Entity Group Parents" I could try fiddling around some more to figure out if i can store an object somehow, But I am running sort on patience and also would rather understand and implement than vice versa. So i would appreciate any docs (even if its huge) that covers all these points, and preferably has some examples that go beyond the very basic data modeling. • EF 4 Self Tracking Entities does not work as expected.

  I am using EF4 Self Tracking Entities (VS2010 Beta 2 CTP 2 plus new T4 generator). But when I try to update entity information it does not update to database as expected. However my software gives my following message. ( I don't know anything about SQL) However, I guess my database has the last login information. • ASP MVC Controller Method not always called from $.getJSON request

  I have a controller method that returns a jSON object and in one calling situation, it works and in another calling situation, it does not work. When the URL in my browser is this: http://localhost:65247/Client -- it works. But, when my url looks like this: http://localhost:65247/Client/UserAdmin?id=6 -- it DOES NOT work In a nutshell, clients have users. From within the client, I wish to work on a specific user (this is the UserAdmin view). In this case, the client id is 6. From within the UserAdmin view that was launched with Id=6, I then wish to select a user from a dropdown. The idea was to use javascript and $.getJSON to fetch data for the specific user so as not to have to refresh the entire page. I use this approach in other parts of the app. The only difference I can see is with the URL in the browser. It would appear the presence of parameters via the '?' is futzing things up a bit.   I am trying to dynamically load a page using $.get(), parse the return with var $content = $(data), and ultimately use selectors to find only certain parts of the document. Only I cannot figure out why the jQuery collection returned from $(data) does not find some very basic selectors. I set up a jsFiddle to illustrate the problem using a very small string of HTML. <html> <head> <title>See Our Events</title> </head> <body><div id="content">testing</div></body> </html> I want to find the <title> node. var html = "<html>\n"+ "<head>\n"+ " <title>See Our Events</title>\n"+ "</head>\n"+ "<body><div id=\"content\">testing</div></body>\n"+ "</html>"; var $content = $(html); console.log($content.find('title').length); // Logs 0.   When the selection of the radio buttons change I would like to show/hide the panel in the next table cell. I have it hiding and showing fine but each time it causes the page to refresh to the top. Is their a way to stop that refresh?   An event has many artists, and an artist has many events. The join of an artist and an event is called a performance. I want to add artists to an event. This works except that I'm getting duplicate entries into my join table when creating a new event. Do you find yourself using just catching the generic Exception or attempting to catch a specific Exception and defaulting to a generic Exception using multiple catch blocks?
