• How do I alter the URL?

  I'm currently working on a big web application for a company and we are about 4 months in, but we have a harmless(but annoying) problem that we have just left because we didn't time to change it. The way we setup our MVC is leaving us with the Servlet being stacked one after the other endless amounts of times on the URL so if we had a Servlet named "ControllerServlet" and I did something on the website I would get a result such as this the first time. WebsiteXXXXXXX.com/XXX/ControllerServletXXXX And the next time I were to do something everything will work fine, but the URL will stack the ControllerServlet Path like this.. WebsiteXXXXXXX.com/XXX/ControllerServlet/ControllerServlet/XXXX WebsiteXXXXXXX.com/XXX/ControllerServlet/ControllerServlet/ControllerServlet/XXXX and so on.... Although it is working perfectly fine, something is obviously not right. I imagine this is an easy fix, but could really use somebodies help. Thanks alot

I stubbed __builtin__.open to raise IOError when the open is called with said file name But how do I go from 278 to 333. Is this even possible? Additional information: - using coverage.py 3.4 (only listing 3.5, we can't currently upgrade to 3.5)

• Making complex queries through SQLiteDatabase

  Hi! I'm using the Android MediaProvider application to get information regarding the resources registered in the media library. The only way I found to do this is to use the ContentProvider class provided by the MediaProvider application. Unfortunately, it seems to me this is quite a limitation, isn't it? Is it possible this way to create complex queries with subqueries and using other functions of SQLite? I thought that it may be possible using the SQLiteDatabase class, but it seems it is not possible to open the database directly with its path, and anyway, the query method seems not to allow subqueries. Any solution to this? Thanks!

• SQL Server version of MySQL's group_concat and escaped strings

  I only have the Express versions of MS SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio. Given that I can't create a SQL Server project and therefore CLR solutions are out of the question, I've attempted to use select col1, stuff( ( select ' ' + col2 from StrConcat t1 where t2.col1 = t1.col1 for xml path('') ),1,1,'') from StrConcat t2 group by col1 order by col1 to get a row concatenated col2. col2 is a varchar field with some control characters like & and \n. When it is concatenated with the above SQL, it appears to escape those control characters ie. & becomes & amp ; and \n becomes &#xOD, which is not what I want it to do. So, the question is, what black box magic is causing that to happen?

• Unable to retrieve the complete description string of the event log record

  Hi All, I have an MFC application that reads and displays event log records using the ::ReadEventLog() API. The problem is with reading the "Description" message string of the event log record. The MFC application is unable to read the complete "Description" message string and displays only some part of it. However the Windows System Event Log Viewer reads and displays the complete "Description" message string correctly. I have ensured that my MFC application reads the entire "Description" message string by retrieving all the strings as provided by the "NumStrings" and "StringOffset" member variables of the EVENTLOGRECORD structure and merging all of them. Also as mentioned in MSDN my application loads the Source Name specific message library file (whose path is specified in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\Application[SourceName]) that further contains additional message string information and merges it with the earlier read strings. I am still unable to get the entire "Description" message string. Please provide any help towards resolving the issue. Regards, Santosh.

  I have three menus on this test web site. I am learning css and trying all the menus inherit all properties from menu class. The second one looks different and is not clickable. I am happy with the 3rd one, just want to make it horizontal and change its position bit. Could somebody tell me why the second menu is not click-able? how I can make the third menu vertical? I thought that display: block; for li of the 3rd menu would do the trick but I do not know the css path for that li.

• Launching an external application from within a NPAPI Plugin

  I am trying to work out why an NPAPI plugin I have written, which works fine in terms of performing operations triggered via Javascipt calls, cannot use CreateProcess() or ShellExecute() to launch an application from a path specified via the Javascript call. I can seemingly use either of these methods and they return success, i.e. no error code. But the application just does not launch. I have tried modifying the parameters used when calling them, to create new process group etc. But seemingly with no effect. I know this may seem like a bit of a security risk, but for the very specific purpose we wish to use it for it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks.

  Anyone here have any experience with using a CMS system for content and populating the site with images/assets from a DAM system? Working with a large number of assets (photos, logos, files, etc) that will be stored on a DAM system for management, revisions, etc. Would like to build a front-end system to help serve up the assets for the users as well as keep the general site updated with non-asset information (like what's new, faq's, etc.) Any ideas/thoughts on this from anyone who has been down this path?   Hi there. I've noticed that to get CSS-Intellisense working in VS, the paths have to be relative - Is this the case? However, it seems <link href="/resources/test.css" [...] /> is far more practical than <link href="resources/test.css" [...] /> I'm including the CSS in the master page, and don't see much good in including it as a content block, just to get the relative paths correct for each directory depth. I've had a quick try with inline code resolving the path, but no dice there either (for Intellisense). I feel I'm missing something fairly simple - What's the correct approach here to have CSS Intellisense work across the pages in the app during dev, and render fine in any deployed state? Cheers. (Note - I'm aware that a <% if (false) { % type hack is required for user controls)

  What are the latest and greatest ways to move ViewState to bottom of the page Can this be done in a IHttpHandler that can be specified in the web.config to intercept requests to "*.aspx"? <httpHandlers> <add verb="*" path="*.aspx" type="MyApp.OptimizedPageHandler" /> <httpHandlers> Other options is that this could be done in a IHttpModule, but that is not as performant, as it will intercept all requests. Also it could be done in an a class deriving from the Page or MasterPage-class, but this is not as modular. Are there any performance penalties to this?

  I have a PHP script with infinite loop. I need this script running forever. So, I run php /path/to/script.php > /dev/null & And it works in background in my current user's security context. But when I close terminal window (log off), of course, CentOS Linux kills my program. I see two guesses: run from a different user in background or make a daemon. I need help in each situation. • C# .net -> SQLite error: Unable to open the database file

  Hello all, I'm getting "System.Data.SQLite.SQLiteException: Unable to open the database file." when I attempt to access the database to save a record upon the "first" opening of my program. Here's the thing, it works fine when debugging locally in Visual Studio, but stops working when I package the program in an installer, and then install the program somewhere. I was guessing that it was the location of the database, which I just have set at database.s3db without a path, because it is stored next to the program's exe, but how could that cause problems? I'm at a loss, any further ideas or suggestions for solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

• SQL SERVER – Curious Case of Disappearing Rows – ON UPDATE CASCADE and ON DELETE CASCADE – Part 1 of 2

  Social media has created an Always Connected World for us. Recently I enrolled myself to learn new technologies as a student. I had decided to focus on learning and decided not to stay connected on the internet while I am in the learning session. On the second day of the event after the learning was over, I noticed lots of notification from my friend on my various social media handle. He had connected with me on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, YouTube as well SMS, WhatsApp on the phone, Skype messages and not to forget with a few emails. I right away called him up. The problem was very unique – let us hear the problem in his own words. “Pinal – we are in big trouble we are not able to figure out what is going on. Our product details table is continuously loosing rows. Lots of rows have disappeared since morning and we are unable to find why the rows are getting deleted. We have made sure that there is no DELETE command executed on the table as well. The matter of the fact, we have removed every single place the code which is referencing the table. We have done so many crazy things out of desperation but no luck. The rows are continuously deleted in a random pattern. Do you think we have problems with intrusion or virus?” After describing the problems he had pasted few rants about why I was not available during the day. I think it will be not smart to post those exact words here (due to many reasons). Well, my immediate reaction was to get online with him. His problem was unique to him and his team was all out to fix the issue since morning. As he said he has done quite a lot out in desperation. I started asking questions from audit, policy management and profiling the data. Very soon I realize that I think this problem was not as advanced as it looked. There was no intrusion, SQL Injection or virus issue. Well, long story short first - It was a very simple issue of foreign key created with ON UPDATE CASCADE and ON DELETE CASCADE.  CASCADE allows deletions or updates of key values to cascade through the tables defined to have foreign key relationships that can be traced back to the table on which the modification is performed. ON DELETE CASCADE specifies that if an attempt is made to delete a row with a key referenced by foreign keys in existing rows in other tables, all rows containing those foreign keys are also deleted. ON UPDATE CASCADE specifies that if an attempt is made to update a key value in a row, where the key value is referenced by foreign keys in existing rows in other tables, all of the foreign key values are also updated to the new value specified for the key. (Reference: BOL) In simple words – due to ON DELETE CASCASE whenever is specified when the data from Table A is deleted and if it is referenced in another table using foreign key it will be deleted as well. In my friend’s case, they had two tables, Products and ProductDetails. They had created foreign key referential integrity of the product id between the table. Now the as fall was up they were updating their catalogue. When they were updating the catalogue they were deleting products which are no more available. As the changes were cascading the corresponding rows were also deleted from another table. This is CORRECT. The matter of the fact, there is no error or anything and SQL Server is behaving how it should be behaving. The problem was in the understanding and inappropriate implementations of business logic.  What they needed was Product Master Table, Current Product Catalogue, and Product Order Details History tables. However, they were using only two tables and without proper understanding the relation between them was build using foreign keys. If there were only two table, they should have used soft delete which will not actually delete the record but just hide it from the original product table. This workaround could have got them saved from cascading delete issues. I will be writing a detailed post on the design implications etc in my future post as in above three lines I cannot cover every issue related to designing and it is also not the scope of the blog post. More about designing in future blog posts. Once they learn their mistake, they were happy as there was no intrusion but trust me sometime we are our own enemy and this is a great example of it. In theory, it would be possible to get this information out of the registry, but like I said, I don't do Windows, but I'll accept a patch that does this. I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR ANSWER ALL DAY PLEASE DO ANYBODY REALLY KNOW HOW TO DO THIS OR AT LEAST POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION???? THANKS and what is the c compiler for???????

• Blank space after file extension -> weird FileInfo behaviour

  Somehow a file has appeared in one of my directories, and it has space at the end of its extension - its name is "test.txt ". The weird thing is that Directory.GetFiles() returns me the path of this file, but I'm unable to retrieve file information with FileInfo class. The error manifests here: DirectoryInfo di = new DirectoryInfo("c:\\somedir"); FileInfo fi = di.GetFileSystemInfos("test*")[0] as FileInfo; //correctly fi.FullName is "c:\somedir\test.txt " //but fi.Exists==false (!) Is FileInfo class broken? Can I somehow retrieve information about this file? I really don't know how did that file appear on my file system, and I am unable to recreate some more of them. All of my attempts to create a new file with this type of extension have failed, but now my program is crashing when encoutering it. I can easily handle the exception when finding the file, but boy am I curious about this!

  Following is from pylint docs: --ignore=<file> Add <file or directory> to the black list. It should be a base name, not a path. You may set this option multiple times. [current: %default] Yet I'm not having luck getting the directory part work. I have directory called migrations, which has django-south migration files. As I enter --ignore=migrations it still keeps giving me the errors/warnings in files inside migrations directory. Could it be that --ignore is not working for directories? If I could even use regexp to match the ignored files it would work, since django-south files are all named 0001_something, 0002_something...

• Parameter for BPEL process

  Hi I use OpenESB + BPEL. I would like to use some parameter to set system specific settings (path, string constants, etc.). I tried to use a properties file that a simple java class should read up and use with this method (http://wiki.open-esb.java.net/Wiki.jsp?page=BPELSEHowToCallJavaMethods). The problem is that I can't create properties file in BPEL project (not supported). So I created a file by hand. So there are times when I want the command window to not show up and times when I want it to stay open so that the user can see what happened, possibly respond with the appropriate input. Creating trunk works just fine: macbook[601] # svn mkdir trunk A trunk macbook[602] # svn commit trunk Adding trunk Committed revision 67. moving everything into trunk fails: macbook[604] # svn move * trunk svn: Cannot copy path 'trunk' into its own child 'trunk/trunk' is there a way to do this without giving it all the file and dir names individually? There are threads describing how to do this with TortoiseSVN, but i'd like to know the right way to do it with the svn commandline. Thanks.

• Wrong assembly-references for Silverlight Sketchflow project in Blend 3

  Hello, In my installation of Blend 3, the SketchStyles are missing when a new project is created. I found out that this is because the following automatic references in the project are wrong: Microsoft.Expression.Interactions Microsoft.Expression.Prototyping.Interactivity Microsoft.Expression.Prototyping.RunTime Microsoft.Expression.Prototyping.SketchControls In the project references these all point to my project path (where they don't live). If I remove them manually, and instead set the references to ie this: "c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Expression\Blend 3\Interactivity\Libraries\Silverlight\Microsoft.Expression.Interactions.dll" everything works. Any ideas on why, and how to fix this? Could it be the project template somehow? TIA

• Functional Adaptation

  In real life and OO programming we’re often faced with using adapters, DVI to VGA, 1/4” to 1/8” audio connections, 110V to 220V, wrapping an incompatible interface with a new one, and so on.  Where the adapter pattern is generally considered for interfaces and classes a similar technique can be applied to method signatures.  To be fair, this adaptation is generally used to reduce the number of parameters but I’m sure there are other clever possibilities to be had.  As Jan questioned in the last post, how can we use a common method to execute an action if the action has a differing number of parameters, going back to the greeting example it was suggested having an AddName method that takes a first and last name as parameters.  This is exactly what we’ll address in this post. Let’s set the stage with some review and some code changes.  First, our method that handles the setup/tear-down infrastructure for our WCF service: 1: private static TResult ExecuteGreetingFunc<TResult>(Func<IGreeting, TResult> theGreetingFunc) 2: { 3: IGreeting aGreetingService = null; 4: try 5: { 6: aGreetingService = GetGreetingChannel(); 7: return theGreetingFunc(aGreetingService); 8: } 9: finally 10: { 11: CloseWCFChannel((IChannel)aGreetingService); 12: } 13: } Our original AddName method: 1: private static string AddName(string theName) 2: { 3: return ExecuteGreetingFunc<string>(theGreetingService => theGreetingService.AddName(theName)); 4: } Our new AddName method: 1: private static int AddName(string firstName, string lastName) 2: { 3: return ExecuteGreetingFunc<int>(theGreetingService => theGreetingService.AddName(firstName, lastName)); 4: } Let’s change the AddName method, just a little bit more for this example and have it take the greeting service as a parameter. 1: private static int AddName(IGreeting greetingService, string firstName, string lastName) 2: { 3: return greetingService.AddName(firstName, lastName); 4: } The new signature of AddName using the Func delegate is now Func<IGreeting, string, string, int>, which can’t be used with ExecuteGreetingFunc as is because it expects Func<IGreeting, TResult>.  Somehow we have to eliminate the two string parameters before we can use this with our existing method.  This is where we need to adapt AddName to match what ExecuteGreetingFunc expects, and we’ll do so in the following progression. 1: Func<IGreeting, string, string, int> -> Func<IGreeting, string, int> 2: Func<IGreeting, string, int> -> Func<IGreeting, int>   For the first step, we’ll create a method using the lambda syntax that will “eliminate” the last name parameter: 1: string lastNameToAdd = "Smith"; 2: //Func<IGreeting, string, string, int> -> Func<IGreeting, string, int> 3: Func<IGreeting, string, int> addName = (greetingService, firstName) => AddName(greetingService, firstName, lastNameToAdd); The new addName method gets us one step close to the signature we need.  Let’s say we’re going to call this in a loop to add several names, we’ll take the final step from Func<IGreeting, string, int> -> Func<IGreeting, int> in line as a lambda passed to ExecuteGreetingFunc like so: 1: List<string> firstNames = new List<string>() { "Bob", "John" }; 2: int aID; 3: foreach (string firstName in firstNames) 4: { 5: //Func<IGreeting, string, int> -> Func<IGreeting, int> 6: aID = ExecuteGreetingFunc<int>(greetingService => addName(greetingService, firstName)); 7: Console.WriteLine(GetGreeting(aID)); 8: } If for some reason you needed to break out the lambda on line 6 you could replace it with 1: aID = ExecuteGreetingFunc<int>(ApplyAddName(addName, firstName)); and use this method: 1: private static Func<IGreeting, int> ApplyAddName(Func<IGreeting, string, int> addName, string lastName) 2: { 3: return greetingService => addName(greetingService, lastName); 4: } Splitting out a lambda into its own method is useful both in this style of coding as well as LINQ queries to improve the debugging experience.  It is not strictly necessary to break apart the steps & functions as was shown above; the lambda in line 6 (of the foreach example) could include both the last name and first name instead of being composed of two functions.  The process demonstrated above is one of partially applying functions, this could have also been done with Currying (also see Dustin Campbell’s excellent post on Currying for the canonical curried add example).  Matthew Podwysocki also has some good posts explaining both Currying and partial application and a follow up post that further clarifies the difference between Currying and partial application.  In either technique the ultimate goal is to reduce the number of parameters passed to a function.  Currying makes it a single parameter passed at each step, where partial application allows one to use multiple parameters at a time as we’ve done here.  This technique isn’t for everyone or every problem, but can be extremely handy when you need to adapt a call to something you don’t control.
