• Placing of copyright notice in source code

  I'm about to release a project of mine that I'm really proud of under the GNU GPL and I have some questions: Should one attach a copyright notice on each and every source code file from their project? I think it's a bit ridiculous to claim copyright on a 3 line abstract class. Should I attach a copyright notice only to really important source code files? Can I not attach the whole standard thingy? Because it's big and bulky and gets in the way... If so, is the variant below ok/enough? Copyright year firstname lastname. This program is free software: you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation.

• Which Shopping Cart is better to run online grocery shop Prestrashop or nopCommerce

  I have been researching on open source software for an online grocery shop project. I have now narrowed by search to .NET based nopCommerce and the PHP based PrestaShop shopping carts. My plan is to acquire an open source shopping cart and hire a local developer to customize it to our local needs & as per our requirement. I'm now wondering whether I should have a developer start the whole project from scratch, or use an open source software such us PrestaShop or nopCommerce which can then be customized? Note that my store will have thousands of products and services so I want something that can handle up to 5000 products and over. Thanks for your thoughts and advice in advance.

• 2D SAT Collision Detection not working when using certain polygons (With example)

  My SAT algorithm falsely reports that collision is occurring when using certain polygons. I believe this happens when using a polygon that does not contain a right angle.   Let's say there are two similar open source projects A and B, both licensed under the Apache Software License 2.0. I would like to contribute an improvement to both projects (because I don't know which one is administered better, and I would like to see my improvement show up in both). Is there a way I can contribute this improvement to both projects in a simple way? (One obvious approach is to start an open source project C licensed under Apache 2.0, but that's a headache for various reasons; I don't want to maintain a project myself)

• Questions about software licensing

  I've been having a discussion about licensing and open source software. Basically - the other guy is saying that licensing is easy, if you're going to build a product you can use an (any) open source project and make money by selling that code. My issue is that say I create a website or app with a project that uses a GPL license the restrictions aren't so straight forward - correct me if i'm wrong on each of these scenarios: 1 - i create an iPhone app using GPL code and put that app into the appstore - the code must be freely available to people buying that app. 2 - i create a website that my client hosts - they must have access to the code. 3 - i create a website as SaaS that my client "leases" but does not own - though it is hosted on their infrastructure - they must have access to that code Am i right on each of those assumptions? Are there any other issues i should be aware of under any other licensing terms for other licenses?

• 3D Collision help

  I'm having difficulties with my project. I'm quite new in XNA. Anyway, I'm trying to make 3D game and I'm already stuck on one basic thing. I have terrain made from a heightmap, and an avatar model. I want to set up some collisions for game so the player won't go through the ground. But I just don't know how to detect collisions for so complex an object. I could just make a simple box collision for my avatar, but what about the ground? I already implemented the JigLibX physics engine in my project and I know that I can make a collision map with heightmap, but I can't find any tutorials or help with this. So how can I set proper collision for complex objects? How can I detect heightmap collisions in JigLibX? Just some links to tutorials would be enough. Thanks in advance!

  Has anyone used Sproutcore for a web application? If so, can you give me a description of your experience? I am currently considering it, but I have a few concerns. First, the documentation is bad/incomplete, and I'm afraid that I'll spend lots of time figuring things out or digging through source code. Also, I'm a bit hesitant to use a project that is relatively new and could undergo significant changes. Any thoughts from people who have developed in Sproutcore are appreciated! However I'm interested in a bit lengthier description of Sproutcore itself from someone who's used it for a significant project.

• Current State EA: Focus on the Integration!!!

  A recent project has me at the front end of a large implementation effort covering multiple software components. In addition to the challenges of integrating 15-20 separate and new software components there is the challenge of integrating the portfolio into an existing environment. Like other clients I've worked with and other environments I've worked in for many years, this is typical. The applications are undocumented and under patched leading to a mystery for any architect leading change.  We can boil down most architecture development methodologies (ADM) into first understanding the current/baseline state and then envisioning one or more future states. Many pundits emphasize the need to focus on the future/target states. I agree since enterprise architecture (EA) is about where you are going and not so much where you have been. But to be effective in the future, I contend some focused time needs to be spent on the current state. And specifically on the integration. Integration is always the difficult part of a project (I might put it more coarsely at a cocktail party). While I don't have a case study, my anecdotal experience suggests poorly integrated application portfolios tend to cost more to operate and create entropy when trying to respond to new changes and opportunities. In the aforementioned project, I was able to get one of our EAs assigned to focus on just integration almost immediately. While we're still early in the process, this EA is uncovering all sorts of information that will greatly assist our future state planning for this solution.   Our latest BizTalk Server 2010 development project is utilising BizTalk as the integration ring around a new and sizable implementaion of Dynamics AX 2012. With this project we have decided to use BAM to monitor the processes within our various new applications.Although I have been specialising in BizTalk for around 9 years, this is my first time using BAM so it is an interesting process to be going through.Recently when deploying a solution I was attempting to check the BAM Portal to see that the View that I had created was properly deployed and that the Activity I was populating was being surfaced in the Portal as expected. Initially I was presented with the message "No view to display" in the "My Views" area of the BAM Portal landing page.This was because you need to set the permissions on the views that you want to see from the command line using the bm.exe tool:bm.exe add-account -AccountName:YourServerOrDomain\YourUsername -View:YourViewThis tool can be found in the BAM folder at the BizTalk installation location:C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2010\Tracking

• View Frustum Alternative

  I am working on a simulation project that requires me to have entities walking around in a 3D world. I have all that working, matrix transformations, etc. I'm at the point where I need what is essentially a view frustum, so I can give each entity a visible area. However, when looking over the calculations required to do it, it seems like a perspective frustum is only required to be able to project it onto a 2D screen. Is there another, easier to code solution, that would function better, such as an orthogonal perspective? Could I just define a shape mathematically and test wether the coordinates of the objects are inside or out? I am not really a 3D coder (and I am doing this all from scratch, not using an engine or anything), so I would like the simplest solution possible for my needs. Thank you!

• Techniques and methods to improve and speedup development

  I just got a new project. It’s a WinForm app. And it’s interesting because I will have the possibility to learn how fish farms work and are managed. I will have to develop touch interfaces, and use datasnap to communicate and sync data between farm and office. The development will be done in DELPHI win32, still not sure about the database, but maybe SQLlite. So now comes the difficult part of the project, building it. I am just finishing one. It took me a lot of time to do it and I am a bit “burned out”. I will have time to relax, not much, but a few days. What I am looking is some tips and tricks and possibly tools to be able to speed up the development. It must be up and running in 2 months. So what tricks do you use to speed up things?

• What are the pro/cons of Unity3D as a choice to make games?

  We are doing our school project with Unity3d, since they were using Shiva the previous year (which seems horrible to me), and I wanted to know your point of view for this tool. Pros: multi platform, I even heard Google is going to implement it in Chrome everything you need is here scripting languages makes it a good choice for people who are not programming gurus Cons: multiplayer ? proprietary, you are totally dependent of unity and its limit and can't extend it it's less "making a game from scratch" C++ would have been a cool thing I really think this kind of tool is interesting, but is it worth it to use at school for a project that involves more than 3 programming persons ? What do we really learn in term of programming from using this kind of tool (I'm ok with python and js, but I hate C#) ? • How to avoid being forked into oblivion by a more powerful contributor?

  As recently reported here: Xamarin has forked Cocos2D-XNA, a 2D/3D game development framework, creating a cross-platform library that can be included in PCL projects. However the founder of the project that was forked says: The purpose of the MIT license is to unencumber your fair use. Not to encourage you to take software, rebrand it as your own, and then "take it in a new direction" as you say. While not illegal, it is unethical. It seems that the GitHub page of the new project doesn't even indicate that it's a fork in a typical GitHub manner, opting for an easily-removable History section instead (see bottom). So my questions are: Was Xamarin's action and the way the action was done ethical or not? Is it possible to avoid such a situation if you are a single developer or a small unfunded group of developers? I am hoping this could be either a wiki question or there will be some objective answers grounded on modern OSS ethics/philosophy.

  As a post VS2010 SP1 installation activity, I am recompiling all my open source projects. The first is XHTMLFIX at http://xhtmlfix.codeplex.com/ This LGPL project has simple fixes to ASP.NET 2.0/4.0 to achieve XHTML compliance as measured by the W3C tests at http://validator.w3.org/ The XHTML project shows as untrue the commonly held belief that MVP or MVC are necessary for producing XHTML compliant web pages. Incidentally the other supposed advantage of MVP and MVC over web forms of easier testing is also very dubious as web forms can be tested by systems such as Selenium or WaTiN. I have used NUnitASP (alas sadly discontinued) with web forms and found it be more effective than unit testing MVP. Now if you prefer the MVP and / or MVC approach over Web forms then fine, that is your preferance. Now if you can find an example where ASP.NET 4.0 Web forms properly written do not produce XHTML compliant markup, I would be glad of your example and will look at ways of modifying the markup to be XHTML compliant.

Quote from Wikipedia Starting from scratch I'm starting from scratch with a project that I recently finished because I found the code to be too tightly coupled and hard to refactor, even when using MVC. I will be using MVC on my new project aswell but want to try and avoid the pitfalls this time, hopefully with your help. Project summary My issue is that I really wish to keep the Controller as clean as possible, but it seems like I can't do this. The basic idea of the program is that the user picks wordlists which is sent to the game engine. It will pick random words from the lists until there are none left. Problem at hand My main problem is that the game will have 'modes', and need to check the input in different ways through a method called checkWord(), but exactly where to put this and how to abstract it properly is a challenge to me. I'm new to design patterns, so not sure whether there exist any might fit my problem. My own attempt at abstraction Here is what I've gotten so far after hours of 'refactoring' the design plans, and I know it's long, but it's the best I could do to try and give you an overview (Note: As this is the sketch, anything is subject to change, all help and advice is very welcome. If object A needs info from object B, how is it supposed to get this without losing too much cohesion? As suggested in the comments, models should hold all business logic. However, as objects should be independent, where to glue them together? Should the model contain some sort of "index" or "client" area which connects the dots? Edit: So basically what I should do for a start is to make a new model which I can more easily call with oneliners such as $model->doAction(); // Lots of code in here which uses classes! How about the method for checking words? Should it be it's own object? I'm not sure where I should put it as it's pretty much part of the 'game'. But on another hand, I could just leave out the 'abstraction and OOPness' and make it a method of the 'client model' which will be encapsulated from the controller anyway. Very unsure about this.

• Contract Programming - Deposit % and Payment Methods? Any advice is appreciated

  I'm pretty new to doing contract work and finally landed a decent paying project. The guy actually offered to put down a deposit and I'm just wondering what percentage I should consider asking for. I was thinking around 25% since its not a terribly large project (only about 20 hours). Also, I can't use PayPal (have had a terrible experience with them freezing funds for no good reason) so I'm wondering if anyone can suggest other methods for the client to send the deposit / payment. I want to make it as easy as possible for them.. thanks for any advice
