  • New to threading in C#, can you make thread methods generic and what are the dangers?

    - by ibarczewski
Hey all, I'm just now starting to get into the idea of threading, and wanted to know if I could make this more abstract. Both foo and bar derive methods from a base class, so I'd like to pass in one or the other and be able to do work using a method that was derived. I'd also like to know how you properly name threads and the methods inside threads. if (ChkFoo.Checked) { Thread fooThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(this.ThreadedFooMethod)); fooThread.Start(); } if (ChkBar.Checked) { Thread barThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(this.ThreadedBarMethod)); barThread.Start(); } . . . public void ThreadedFooMethod() { Foo newFoo = new Foo(); //Do work on newFoo } public void ThreadedBarMethod() { Bar newBar = new Bar(); //Do similar work } Thanks all!

  • Callback Timer function in C++

    - by user3596609
I am trying to implement a callback timer function in C++ which should do a callback after a timeout. I am listening on a socket and then waiting for messages on it. so if I have something like getMessages() and I want to pass the timer function in it as an argument. So how can it be implemented that after the receive of a message, the timer is started and the callback happens if there is a timeout before the next messages arrives. I am new to callback functions. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Using try vs if in python

    - by artdanil
Is there a rationale to decide which one of try or if constructs to use, when testing variable to have a value? For example, there is a function that returns either a list or doesn't return a value. I want to check result before processing it. Which of the following would be more preferable and why? result = function(); if (result): for r in result: #process items or result = function(); try: for r in result: #process items except TypeError: pass; Related discussion: Checking for member existence in Python

  • How to set a value from another class

    - by Ram
Its said that property should not be "Set" only and it should be "Get" as well. What should i do if I need to set value to a variable from some other class? The will keep changing so I cannot pass it through constructor. Shall I create a function for this as shown below? class A { public void SetValue() { b = new B(); b.SetTest(10); } } class B { int test; public void SetTest(int value) { test = value; } } What are the other alternatives?

  • How long people take to learn a new programming language?

    - by Cawas
In general aspects, this might be a good reference for everyone. Having an idea of how long people take in average for properly learning how to code can give a very good idea on how dense or long is the path. Someone who never programmed should take weeks or months, even years maybe while someone who's already experienced in the area and know at least 2 different languages might take days, hours or even minutes to start coding. But other than being able to write code that runs, there are ways to write the same program, and it's much harder to get deep knowledge on that than actually being able to program. And sometimes languages differ a lot from one to another on that aspect as well. For instance, we should never have to worry with code-injection in JavaScript like we do in C. So, is there any place we can see some good numbers for how long it takes to learn a language, maybe divided into level of knowledge categories, languages and paradigms, etc?

  • Handling orientation changes yourself

    - by synic
From the documentation regarding the android:configChanges='orientation' attribute of the activity tag in the manifest: Note: Using this attribute should be avoided and used only as a last-resort. Please read Handling Runtime Changes for more information about how to properly handle a restart due to a configuration change. Why does it say this? In the case of threads and networking requests via a service API library, a request could be made with a reference to the original Activity, and then an orientation change could occur, leaving the thread pointing to the old Activity. While this can be fixed, it's tedious and ugly compared to just handling the configuration changes yourself. Why should it be avoided?

  • Getting a java collection of objects in Alphabetical order

    - by MichaelMcCabe
I have a question that I dont really know where to start. So I thought i'd ask it here. Basically, I have a drop down with names in it. I want these names to be in alphabetical order. Populating the drop down happens as follows; I query a database and pull down an Id and Name, make a object called "UserList", and set the name and id variables with what I get back. I then add this object to an ArrayList. I do this over and over. I then convert this collection to an array, and pass it to my JSP page using session.setAttribute("userList", UserList); I then populate the drop down as below. <c:forEach items="${usersCompanysList}" var="c" > There probably is a simple answer but how to I sort these names?

  • When to use a service in Android

    - by Computerish
Hi everyone, I have a class that fetches data in response to button presses in the main activity. Unfortunately, I keep running into problems because this class is not an Activity or a Service. For example, without a Context I cannot translate a resource id into a string: getString(R.string.example_string); // Doesn't work Should I make this class into a Service and have the main Activity stop the class when it is closed? Should I pass the Context from the Activity into this class like this? MyClass c = new MyClass(this); Or is there some better way to handle this problem? This issue also comes up when I try to send a Toast from this class.

  • Ajax image upload and javascript edit on the fly with ASP.NET MVC (without saving to disk)

    - by gavss
    1) Uploadimage action gets requests from form posts. <form action="/content/uploadimage" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data"> It reads HttpPostedFileBase stream data and sends it to the response. I need to show the image in a div container instead of sending it to the response as a file so that users can manipulate the image using jcrop. Image source is generated at runtime. I can't pass an action name to the src attribute. Is this possible using MVC and without using control viewstate? 2) I don't want to use flash or silverlight. Is there an easy ajax alternative to the method I use to get files from user?

  • Does this make any sense (Apple-documentation)?

    - by Paperflyer
Here is a snippet of the official Apple Documentation of AudioBufferList (Core Audio Data Types Reference) AudioBufferList Holds a variable length array of AudioBuffer structures. struct AudioBufferList { UInt32 mNumberBuffers; AudioBuffer mBuffers[1]; }; typedef struct AudioBufferList AudioBufferList; Fields mNumberBuffers The number of AudioBuffer structures in the mBuffers array. mBuffers A variable length array of AudioBuffer structures. If mBuffers is defined as AudioBuffer[1] it is not of variable length and thus mNumberBuffers is implicitly defined as 1. Do I miss something here or is this just nonsense?

  • How does * work in Python

    - by Deqing
Just switched from C++ to Python, and found that sometimes it is a little hard to understand ideas behind Python. I guess, a variable is a reference to the real object. For example, a=(1,2,5) meaning a - (1,2,5), so if b=a, then b and a are 2 references pointing to the same (1,2,5). It is a little like pointers in C/C++. If I have: def foo(a,b,c): print a,b,c a=(1,3,5) foo(*a) What does * mean here? Looks like it expands tuple a to a[0], a[1] and a[2]. But why print(*a) is not working while print(a[0],a[1],a[2]) works fine?

  • In the context of an asp.net website, what's the most efficient way to check whether a User has acce

    - by scaramouch
I have a webpage that you pass in an id parameter (via a querystring), which it then uses to fetch data from a database. Typically, a user would navigate to this page from another page that lists only those records that the user has access to. However, if they go directly to the page by typing in the URL in the Address Bar, they can effectively view any record they like. Eg. If they were to type something like http://localhost/TestSite/ClientAdmin/ManageLocation.aspx?LocationID=5 into their Address Bar, they can access the database record with the LocationID equal to five - even though they shouldn't have access to it. Now, I could solve this by doing a database check every time the page is loaded to see whether the current user has access to the record they're trying to view. However this doesn't seem very efficient given that in most cases a user won't be trying to access a record that isn't theirs. Does anyone have a better suggestion? Thanks.

  • Getting facts from documents

    - by dotnetdev
Hi, I want to be able to get all the facts from webpages. But these have to be related to coding, and not, for example, about something irrelevant. For example: The Engine renders at a decent speed. May be a fact but is not what I am interested in. If the same article states: A class is a reference type. (This is C#) Then I am interested in that as it is coding related. Has an algorithm like this ever been done? How hard would this be? I'm thinking AI would come into play here. Any advice sought. Thanks

  • Assign parameters to function according to parameter names

    - by Korcholis
I have an assoc array with a list of what are parameters to me. Here's an example: array( 'param1' => 'value1', 'param4' => 'value4', 'param3' => 'value3', 'param2' => 'value2', ); Note that they may come unsorted. Now, is there a way I can make a call (static or from an instance, using call_user_func_array or similar) and correctly pass each value to each parameter? Just to be sure, an example function I'd like to call using that parameter array is one such this: exampleFunction($param1, $param2, $param3, $param4) { ... } PS: Reflection is great, but I'm concerned about execution times (which, at least, in Java tends to increase a lot when using Reflection). If you know any other way to do so, it would be awesome.

  • ListView Item Detail Screen: New or Same Activity?

    - by stormin986
I have a listview where each item correlates to an instance of an item in an array. When the user selects an item, it will bring up a 'Details' page that reads and displays other data members of the list item. Would this be better implemented with the Details page as its own activity, or a new view within the same activity? Pros and cons of each? A new activity makes my job a little easier in terms of handling the 'back' button, but then I have the challenge of how do I pass the rest of the data structure to the new activity since I can't bundle it up (unless I serialize it).

  • passing different structs to a function in c

    - by clear2k
I have different structures that need to be filled out the same way. The only difference is that they are filled based on different data. I was wondering if it's possible to pass different structures to a certain function. What I have in mind is something like: struct stu1 { char *a; int b; }; struct stu2 { char *a; int b; }; static struct not_sure **some_func(struct not_sure *not_sure_here, original_content_list) { // do something and return passed struct for(i=0; i<size_of_original_content_list; i++){ //fill out passed structure } return the_struct; } int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { return_struct1 = some_func(stu1); return_struct2 = some_func(stu2); // do something separate with each return struct... } Any comments will be appreciate it.

  • What is the right way to implement communication between java objects?

    - by imoschak
I'm working on an academic project which simulates a rather large queuing procedure in java. The core of the simulator rests within one package where there exist 8 classes, each one implementing a single concept. Every class in the project follows SRP. These classes encapsulate the behavior of the simulator and inter-connect every other class in the project. The problem that has arisen is that most of these 8 classes are, as is logical i think, tightly coupled and each one has to have working knowledge of every other class in this package in order to be able to call methods from it when needed. The application needs only one instance of each class so it might be better to create static fields for each class in a new class and use that to make calls -instead of preserving a reference in each class for every other class in the package (which I'm certain that is incorrect)-, but is this considered a correct design solution? or is there a design pattern maybe that better suits my needs?

  • IE7 preventDefault() not working on skip links

    - by josh
I currently have skip links that jump to the div ids and was using e.preventDefault() to stop the url from changing when jumping to the element but in IE7 and IE8 it doesn't work at all using e.preventDefault() and if I take it out the url changes to the div the anchor tag contains reference to. Is their any fix or way around this? Here is the code $('body').delegate('a.skiplink-accessible-text', 'click', function (e) { //e.preventDefault(); if (!$.browser.msie) { e.preventDefault(); } var jumpTo = $(this).attr('href'); $('body').find(jumpTo).attr('tabindex', - 1).focus(); }); EDIT: heres a little jsbin example for testing purposes http://jsbin.com/welcome/20846/edit

  • How do I link to another action in Magento whilst passing a parameter to the controller?

    - by desbest
I need to pass a parameter, because I would like to redirect back to the module and query string of the current page. So I can get from showdown/index?id=35 --click--- showdown/vote?id=1 showdown/vote?id=1 --redirect-- showdown/index?id=35 The vote action is not seen. (The redirect method doesn't work as it takes the index.php url only and no actions, and I cannot find a helper in Magento for creating hyperlinks.) Does Magneto have a link helper for this? Example of stuff I want: <a href="<?php echo Mage::Helper->Link->($url, $array); ?> then $array or whatever variables gets sent to the controller.

  • WPF binding: Doing a temperature converter app

    - by Bob
Hi there, I'm doing a little app that basically has 2 text boxes. You'll enter Fahrenheit into TextBoxA and Celsius into TextBoxB. As the text changes in TextBoxA I want the equivalent Celsius value to be displayed in TextBoxB and vice versa. I can come up with a solution pretty easy for this but i'm trying to be a little clever. Is there a way to do it all in Xaml except for a Convert class that does the maths? So basically I want the TextChanged event of one textBox to pass in it's value into a Converter class that is evaluated and sent to the other TextBox and visa versa. Anyone know how I can achieve this ... and if it's possible at all?
