• What happens to remounted data/directories

  According to suggestions in this post I am trying to improve my system to run better with a Solid State Drive. But regarding to RAMdisks and /etc/fstab usage I have some understanding problems coming up. So let's say I add the following lines to /etc/fstab tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,nodiratime,mode=1777 0 0 tmpfs /var/spool tmpfs defaults,noatime,nodiratime,mode=1777 0 0 tmpfs /var/tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,nodiratime,mode=1777 0 0 tmpfs /var/log tmpfs defaults,noatime,nodiratime,mode=0755 0 0 I know that on startup these locations should now get mounted into the RAM (hopefully). But what happens to the physical space that was mounted on those places before? Is it gone? Will it be back when I edit my /etc/fstab back to the Version without tmpfs? Will the space still be allocated on my SSD in a way that I can't use it for any other data? Sometimes it is suggested to add the following line, too: none /var/cache aufs dirs=/tmp:/var/cache=ro 0 0 What does this actually do? I noticed that /var/cache takes almost 1GB of space on my harddisk. So should i clear the directory before activating this line? (this is related to the former question) This causes me some confusions and I hope you can give me some clarifications. UPDATE I've downloaded a image with 600MB in size into /tmp that is mounted with the tmpfs settings above. Now I wanted to compare the RAM usage before and after the download. I expect the RAM usage to be increased by 600MB after the download. But the System Monitoring Tool showed me no changes at all. How can this be? Does tmpfs work other than I actually expect it to?

• excel vba to CRUD drupal nodes

  We need to periodically migrate Excel reports data into Drupal nodes. We looked at replicating some Excel functionality in Drupal with slickgrid, but it wasn't up to snuff. The Excel reports people don't want to double-enter their data, but their data is important to be in this Drupal site. They have hundreds of Excel reports, and update a row in each weekly. We want a button at the row end to fire a VBA macro that submits the data to Drupal, where a new node is created from the info submitted. (Yes, we are experienced with both Drupal and VBA; all users and the site are behind our firewall.) We need the new node's nid or URL returned so we can then create a link in Excel directly to that node Site is D6, using Services 3.x module. I tried the REST server module, but we can't get it to retrieve data without session authentication on, which we can't do from Excel. (unless you can?) I also noticed the 'data' it was returning via browser url was 14 or 20 nodes' info, not the one nid requested (Example: http://mysite.com/services/rest/report/node/30161) When I attempt to create a simple node like this from VBA: Dim MyURL as String MyURL = "http://mysite.com/services/rest/report/node?node[type]=test&node[title]=testing123&node[field_test_one][0][value]=123" Set objHTTP = CreateObject("MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP") With objHTTP .Open "POST", MyURL, False .setRequestHeader "Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded" .send (MyURL) End With I get HTTP Status: Unauthorized: Access denied for user 0 "anonymous" and HTTP Response: null Everything I search for has examples in php or java, nothing in VBA. • Experience of Python's “PEP-302 New Import Hooks”

  I'm one of the developers of Ruby (CRuby). We are working on Ruby 2.0 release (planned to release 2012/Feb). Python has "PEP302: New Import Hooks" (2003): This PEP proposes to add a new set of import hooks that offer better customization of the Python import mechanism. Contrary to the current import hook, a new-style hook can be injected into the existing scheme, allowing for a finer grained control of how modules are found and how they are loaded. We are considering introducing a feature similar to PEP302 into Ruby 2.0 (CRuby 2.0). I want to make a proposal which can persuade Matz. Currently, CRuby can load scripts from only file systems in a standard way. If you have any experience or consideration about PEP 302, please share. Example: It's a great spec. No need to change it. It is almost good, but it has this problem... If I could go back to 2003, then I would change the spec to... I'm sorry if such a question is not suitable for here.   On a previous question i posted, i asked for help on fixing my windows vista box because it keeps going to blue screen. No one seems to have the answer, so now i want to install Windows 7. I want to know if i can install 7 without having to reformat my hard drive and having to lose all my files. I've already confirmed the hardware is working because i installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my external hard drive and it runs on my system fine.   I ran across a post on Super User that addressed a question about Outlook email forwarding. One user provided a script to utilize.   so my network layou is something like this (I don't have enough reputation to post images so here's the link) http://i.imgur.com/OaD4i.png now Alice has access to SSH gateway (just gateway from now on) with: ssh [email protected] and the authorized keys file on the gateway looks like this #/home/Alice/.ssh/authorized_keys command="ssh -t alice@web" ssh-rsa ABCD...E== alice@somehost so when Alice trys to connect to the Gateway with her private key, she actually gets connected to the Web server (the gateway pc can make a connection to the web server with a passwordless private key, so that stays transparent). The question 1) How can I set this up so that Alice will be able to scp things to web server too? 2) I know this makes a separete connection, but is there any way for this to work as a normal ssh so that even something like -R12345:localhost:22 would work?

This paper is certain to become a must read for any customer interested in rules automation. What is OPA?  If you are not sitting in your favorite Greek restaurant waiting for that order of Saganaki to appear, OPA is Oracle’s solution for automated streamlining, standardizing, and the maintenance of policy. It is a specialized rules platform that simplifies the automation of rules and policies, putting the analysis in the hands of the analysts, not the IT organization. In other words, OPA allows the organization to be more efficient by eliminating (or at a minimum, reducing the engagement of) the middle man from the process. The whitepaper I mention above is titled, “Is Oracle Policy Automation a Good Fit for My Business?”. This short document walks the reader through use cases and advice for the reader to consider when deciding if OPA is right for their agency. The paper outlines many different scenarios, different uses of OPA in production today and, where OPA may not be a good fit. Many of the use case examples revolve around end user questionnaires or analyst research. What is often overlooked is OPA’s ability to act as a rules engine behind the scenes. That is, take inputs from one source (e.g., personnel data), process that data in OPA and send the output (e.g., pay data with benefits deductions) to a second source. • Redmine + Backlogs not working on Turnkey Linux (Ubuntu)

  I'm trying to get Redmine + Backlogs work, so for starters I took a virtual appliance with Redmine from Turnkey Linux (http://www.turnkeylinux.org/redmine) and installed Backlogs on top of it, following the installation instructions (http://www.redminebacklogs.net/en/installation/ - used method #2). It seems to have installed ok, but when I go to the "Backlogs" tab and attempt to create some stories, this is what I get - first shows some kind of error/warning icon, others continue to display "in progress" icon indefinitely (can't post a screenshot, unfortunately, but you can take a look at it here: http://www.redmine.org/attachments/5329/Backlogs.jpg). None of the stories get actually created - leaving this tab and returning back to it shows empty backlogs. So.. what am I doing wrong, and how to fix this?

• Hardware compatibility on H97 chipset/hardware support

  I am aware that there is documentation about compatibility but it is way out dated. I am also aware that there is a hardware compatibility page on Ubuntu website, but that one is focused on the whole box rather than a single piece of hardware. I have some experience with Linux OS, and some experience playing Ubuntu Server in a virtual machine, but never worked on a machine that lives in the real internet. I am building a home server with an Intel H97 chipset motherboard. I have looked at several models and none of them has Linux in the supported OS category. I have the experience of installing Ubuntu Desktop 14.04 on my 4-years-old lap top, and except for some system errors on start up, there is not too much I can complain about, so I guess I should be fine. However, this time I am going to install Ubuntu Server 14.04 on a relatively new piece of hardware(I went to http://linux-drivers.org/ but found nothing really helpful). For example the ASUS motherboard has M.2 socket and Intel LAN I218V chip, the Gigabyte motherboard has two LAN chips(Intel LAN WGI217V and ATHEROS AR8161-BL3A-R). So I really want to make sure everything will work. Usually I would just trust Ubuntu and buy all hardware I need, but basing on my past experience with the Ubuntu Desktop version on my lap top, I am not so convinced. There is an easily noticeable difference: when the system is idle, the fan runs much more frequently and longer under Ubuntu. This leads to my suspicion that generally hardware will have worse support for Ubuntu, which is no surprising at all but enough for me to put this post here. And as far as I know, some Intel CPU features come with software that usually will not run under Linux. Any help, idea or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

• Efficient use of Bundling

  One of the discussions I am having with customers and consulting people is about the use of Bundling and its appropriate use. We introduced Bundling post release in the V2.2 code line to allow partners and consultants to build solutions using the Configuration Tools objects such as UI Maps, Service Scripts, Business Objects, Business Services etc and then export and migrate them as solutions. Whilst that was the original intent I have found a few teams using the facility for other data and then complaining about the efficiency or relevance of the tool. Here are a number of guidelines to help optimize the use of Bundling for your implementation: Not all objects can be bundled. Only specific objects in the product can be bundled. These are targetted at Configuration Tools objects and a select group of other objects that are required for these objects. Maintenance Objects with the option "Eligble for Bundling" set to Y (and also contains a Bundling Add BO). Add objects to the Bundle as you complete them - Bundling can have issues with sequencing objects. The best way of combating this is to add objects to the bundle as you complete them. This will help with making sure you sequence the loading of the objects as you are building them in the correct order. Remember Bundling was designed for developers and partners to deliver solutions. If you leave adding objects to a Bundle using the Bundle Export zones then you will have less control of what sequence they are applied and this can cause timing issues. Bundling takes the latest revision  - If you combine Bundling with Revision Control then the Bundling will take the latest release of the object at the time of the export operation. Bundling and Version Control products - If you use a version control tool to control your java code then you can also check in the Bundle to associate a release between code and a bundle. Bundling is quite a powerful feature of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework that allows sales, partners, consultants and customers to package and import their Configuration Tools based solutions.

But when you drop down the tab to search: This Site: "blog site name" you get the following reply: No results matching your search were found. Check your spelling. Are the words in your query spelled correctly? Try using synonyms. Maybe what you're looking for uses slightly different words. Make your search more general. Try more general terms in place of specific ones. Try your search in a different scope. Different scopes can have different results. I have tried the following command: from the Index server net stop osearch net start osearch iisreset /noforce But still not able to search a local blog site I can only search for users and Sites. please help Don

  I have a Howto company Blog site that i post to for my clients to access for help. For some reason it has stopped letting anyone search on it. I can search for Mysites or users. But when you drop down the tab to search: This Site: "blog site name" you get the following reply: No results matching your search were found. Check your spelling. Are the words in your query spelled correctly? Try using synonyms. Maybe what you're looking for uses slightly different words. Make your search more general. Try more general terms in place of specific ones. Try your search in a different scope. Different scopes can have different results. I have tried the following command: from the Index server net stop osearch net start osearch iisreset /noforce But still not able to search a local blog site I can only search for users and Sites. please help Don

• What causes critical glib errors (when coding using messaging menu)?

  If I run the python code below (almost entirely from this useful blog post) then I get three identical nasty looking error messages in the terminal. What might be causing them? I note the number (5857 in the example below) changes slightly on each run. What does this number signify? Is it a memory location or something similar? • Redirect subdomain to hidden folder using mod_rewrite

  Hello! I want to keep my blog in subfolder domain_com/htdocs/blog and access it using blog.domain.com. I can obtain it using apache's mod_rewrite: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^blog\.domain\.com RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^/blog RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /blog/$1 [L] But I also want to redirect hxxp://domain.com/blog to hxxp://blog.domain.com (simply because I want to hide it from users). Simple redirection like: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^wojtyniak\.com$ RewriteRule %{REQUEST_URI} ^/foo RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://foo.wojtyniak.com [L,R=301] causes redirection loop. • Ubuntu Kernel Panic on Inserting Network Cable

  I've been having a recurring kernel panic with my Ubuntu 9.04 installation (see other posts by me). Today, I was fiddling around trying to get some cable attached when the system panicked. Looking at the layout, the only cable in the vicinity was the network cable. Upon further investigation, it seems that the system reliably panics whenever I insert a network cable. Removing the cable does not cause the panic. How do I stop the system panicking when I insert the network cable? If more information is needed, please add comments/answers and I'll post the required data.

• Forward Windows Events Logs to Rsyslog

  Thanks for taking time to read this post. Basically I would like to forward Windows Events Logs from all my desktop clients to a linux box with rsyslog on. Rsyslog provide a Windows agent to do just that but its 40 euros per license and when you have x amount of machines that cost adds up. I was wondering if there is a FOSS alternative available I have tried searching the Google but haven't managed to find anything. Hopefully someone might already faced this same problem and are using an alternative that they could recommend. Again thanks for reading, Kind Regards Sam

• new project; entire node.js app

  I have been looking into Node.js, express and Nowjs and love how easy it is to have real time interactions between clients. My background is mostly from CodeIgniter MVC using PHP and MYSql. I want to re make a current web project of mine from scratch to make everything better and more real time with this newer technology. After researching and doing test examples I want to use node.js , express and Nowjs for the real time interactions once someone connects to the socket.io to pull data back to clients. But use Code Igniter for the control of the site and user management , possible shopping cart/store , pretty much everything else. This is purely due to time constraints and that I am already familiar with doing it that way. I have been looking at MongoDB as an alternative to MySql, Basically the app is going to be multiple chat rooms all on one page. with the ability of notifications and private messaging. Lots of data transfer and images. before I started piecing it together I wanted to get people who have already done something similar. My model would use Code Igniter and MySQL to render the page and then connect them onto a node.js server and broadcast using express and nowjs would using a mongoDB be better than mySQL for tons of messages and data being stored or MYSQL? Also does it make since to not make the whole site on Node.js , kinda piece it together like that? • Write DAX queries in Report Builder #ssrs #dax #ssas #tabular

  If you use Report Builder with Reporting Services, you can use DAX queries even if the editor for Analysis Services provider does not support DAX syntax. In fact, the DMX editor that you can use in Visual Studio editor of Reporting Services (see a previous post on that), is not available in Report Builder. However, as Sagar Salvi commented in this Microsoft Connect entry, you can use the DAX query text in the query of a Dataset by using the OLE DB provider instead of the Analysis Services one. I think it’s a good idea to show the steps required. First, create a DataSet using the OLE DB connection type, and provide the connection string the provider (Provider), the server name (Data Source) and the database name (Initial Catalog), such as: Provider=MSOLAP;Data Source=SERVERNAME\\TABULAR;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorks Tabular Model SQL 2012 Then, create a Dataset using the data source previously defined, select the Text query type, and write the DAX code in the Query pane: You can also use the Query Designer window, that doesn’t provide any particular help in writing the DAX query, but at least can show a preview of the result of the query execution. • removed ati proprietary driver, tried to hibernate, destroyed ubuntu installation. help?

  I totally ruined my Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop x64 installation today. I've never been able to hibernate or suspend (not with my laptop, server or htpc), not even through this guide. So I read a post here on askubuntu.com that said that the proprietary drivers may be in the way for it to work. Therefore I removed my ATI-drivers, rebooted, then tried to hibernate the system. I got some error about "blk_something_something didn't work, resubmitting1". So I turned off the computer and then tried booting up. I see the ubuntu splash but after that I'm greeted with this screen: The upper dot is the mouse pointer since I can move it with the mouse (I have ubuntu set to login automatically). I don't know how this happened. What can I do to fix this? I'm getting seriously irritated over how buggy ubuntu is, why doesn't even suspend/hibernate work (remember that I have 3 different systems where it fails)? So what is the next step? I want to get into cli mode and reinstall the driver but since I'm relatively new to ubuntu I don't know how to get into a terminal without logging in first. And if I press shift during boot I can't get into grub either and try something from there. Please come with all suggestions you can think of!   Some time back I posted a blog entry (mirrored here and here) asking you how you design databases. Out of those responses, my own experience, studies I read, and interviews I conducted, I collected a wealth of data. Thanks for your responses. So what am I going to do with that information? Well, all along I had planned for that to be used today. I am giving a presentation at an event called “TechReady” called “How Your Customers Design Databases”. This is a Microsoft-internal event, where technical professionals like myself, salespeople, and the product team get together to talk about what has been working, what doesn’t, what is coming and hopefully (fingers crossed here) what the product team can do to help us help the SQL Server community. I’ve mentioned before that I teach database design as part of a course I run at the University of Washington. I’m also planning to give a mini-lecture from that series at TechEd 2010, so if you’re coming stop by. I’d love to meet you. So today I talk about you – thanks for the input.
