• iPhone 3d Model format: .h file, .obj, or some other?

  I'm beginning to write an iPhone game using OpenGL-ES and I've come across a problem with deciding what format my 3D models should be in. I've read (link escapes me at the moment) that some developers prefer the models compiled in Objective-C .h files. Still, others prefer having .obj as these are more portable (i.e., for deployment on non-iPhone platforms). Various 3D game engines seem to support many(?) formats, but I'm not going to use any of these engines as I would like to actually learn OpenGL-ES. Am I putting myself at a disadvantage here by not using a packaged engine? Thanks!

• 2D management game [on hold]

  Very newbie question but I have a game idea in mind. It will be 2d and data centric, like football manager. However I am struggling to find a platform that would suit. I am an experienced line of business developer so am happy to write code, but I would like a platform that does some of the leg work for me so was avoiding OpenGL. I would also like to be able deploy to iOS, android, windows and OS X. What are the options? To be more clear, the game is not a normal platform or shooter type game, so game maker is likely to be way too basic and unity seems a little over the top (though I am not sure if the GUI options would fit?). The majority of the game is more like business screens just displaying data and having buttons to click. Are there options for this type of game (May help to look at football manager)?

• Transisting from Chemical engineering to software industry what to do??

I am confused what to do next.Currently i have two choices. 1) Get good at C,Learn Python & write some good code/Apps & increase my employability chances. Or 2) Do some Java/.Net certifications to increase my employability chances. Any kind of advice/suggestion is highly welcomed. • MAMP Pro Installed On Mavericks 10.9

  I have MAMP Pro Installed. I'm well aware with the advanced features of MAMP Pro I can change to different types of Hosts, but I wanted to know why my previous method would not work within mavericks. This was my usual working method in 10.8, but now with 10.9 it's a headache. The previous method would: Write a custom address with the host address: "#Virtual Hosts" 127.0.0.1 nameofsite.local go to /Applications/MAMP/conf/apache and open the httpd.conf file, scroll to the bottom and then add NameVirtualHost * DocumentRoot "/Applications/MAMP/htdocs" ServerName localhost DocumentRoot "/Users/Klimt/Sites/siteoffolder" ServerName clientA.local make sure the ports is set to 80, 443, 3306. reset MAMP PRO and then usually type in the url address and it's gold from there. any help?

Now I think forwarding Equals to Equals is okay, for obvious reasons, but for the life me I can't remember why I thought it wasn't before. Any thoughts?

Make it so damned difficult to cancel your windows phone dev account subscription, that you will just give up trying and pay as the easy route out.Very sad that it has come to this. Usually I would not approach an open forum such as my site for such issues, but the sad state of their affairs leaves me with no choice. Here is the issue, last year, I opened a WPDev account, for which you have to pay. Seeing that its been a year, I haven’t submitted anything, I didn’t want to renew my account and pay the fee. I guess if I ever write a WP app, I will reopen the subscription. Sounds about right huh? fair? So, what would you expect? Login to your account, find the subscription, hit cancel! • Prevent APT from overwriting JCE jars

  My server runs a Java application that requires I replace a few java library files with ones I downloaded on my own. This has to do with JCE security extensions and isn't really relevant to my question. I've found that these library files tend to get overwritten by apt when it later updates my java package. Is there a apt-friendly way of masking these specific files so apt won't touch them? Potential Solutions I'm considering just removing the write flag from the files, though I'm expecting this will cause apt to spew its guts everywhere when it later tries to overwrite them? Perhaps there's a java custom library directory I don't know of, where I can park my files and they'll be loaded instead of the package's defaults? The last-resort option I'm considering is writing a cron job to periodically replace the files with my versions. I hate this option.

• Retail Link data storage requirements

  I was asked today about how much data an average Retail Link analyst (Walmart vendor) would consume.  I thought I would write this small post for future reference. Of course this vastly depends on the amount of skus, how long you want to archive data, and if you want store level sales. Most reports take up very little space. Most times when you download a report (total sales per sku for last week), you will overwrite the previous week’s report.  However, most users will take the data inside their downloaded report, and add it to a database or larger excel spreadsheet.  This way, the user has a history of the sales of each item/sku per week over the last 2+ years.  I would estimate 1 user to consume around 1-2 gb of space, at most, over the course of 2 years. If you start archiving store level sales those numbers can drastically increase up to 10gb or more very quickly.

• Any good web frameworks for asynchronous multiplayer games?

  I'm trying to craft a site for web-based (original) board games, and my client (currently written in Actionscript, but that's highly fungible) works fine - I can play solitaire games in the client - but it has nothing to connect to. What I'm looking for is a server framework for handling accounts/authentication and game tracking: something that would let players log in, show them a list of their current games, let them invite friends to new games, let them make moves in the games they have open, etc. I'm flexible on language; obviously I'm going to have to write a lot of server code to handle the actual game logic, but that should be straightforward enough. I'm more concerned with how to handle the user (and game) DBs, though suggestions for a good server framework for communicating with the DBs (and serving up, most likely, JSON for client communications) are also welcome. Right now my leaning is towards Ruby (probably with Rails) but as far as I can determine it would be a pretty good chunk of effort to set up the necessary databases, so having something even higher-level would be really useful to me.

• Why does the instruction "do" require a "while"?

  Since this statement is so common: while (true) (Java) or while (1) (C) or sometimes for (;;) Why is there not a single instruction for this? I could think that an instruction that could do it is just do but do requires a while at the end of the block but it would be more logical to write an infinite loop like this do { //loop forever } Why not? AFAIK the instruction do always requires a while at the end but if we could use it like above then it would be a clear way to define something like while (true) which I think should not be written like that (or for (;;)).

Purpose is to learn the rules of adding new modules and features, so when it comes to maintaining existing ones there is some concept. So, I'm looking for a good book, tutorial or websites where I can continue to read about this. Currently, what I know and what I do is: to design relational database(3NF), make separate class for each table put that in MVC implement modular programming ...write code and hope for the best... I presume that next things I need to learn more deeply are: programming codex(naming, commenting, conventions...), organize functions building interfaces organizing custom made libraries, organizing API that I'm using, documenting, team work... ... At last what my job is, it does't need to affect your answer, PHP CodeIgniter developer.

• How do you remember where in your code you want to continue next time?

  When you interrupt the work on some code (be it because you have to work on something else or go on vacation or simply because it is the end of the day), once you close that Visual Studio project, what is your preferred way to remember what you want to do next when you start working on that code again. Do you set a Visual Studio bookmark or do write down something like // TODO: continue here next time? Maybe you have a special tag like // NEXT:? Do you put a sticky note on your monitor? Do you use a cool tool or Visual Studio plugin I should know? Do you have any personal trick that helps you find the place in your code where you left off the last time you worked on your code?

• Blank Processes (?) in Natty Narwhal

  I've noticed that there a seemingly blank processes (no process name, no cmdline info, only an ID), which also appear to cause my CPU to be running like crazy. My fans are going pretty much full speed and I have no idea what to do. Restarting does not help. Whenever I try to kill the process IDs, nothing happens. It's like new blank processes are continuously being created. I am really surprised that I am able to write up this question without Firefox lagging like crazy (and trust me, it's not Firefox causing the issue, as far as I can tell).

• setup lowcost image storage server with 24x SSD array to get high IOPS?

  I want to build let's name it a lowcost Ra*san which would host for our social site the images (many millions) we have 5 sizes of every photo with 3 KB, 7 KB, 15 KB, 25 KB and 80 KB per Image. My idea is to build a Server with 24x consumer 240 GB SSD's in Raid 6 which will give me some 5 TB Disk space for the photo storage. To have HA I can add a 2nd one and use drdb. I'm looking to get above 150'000 IOPS (4K Random reads). As we mostly have read access only and rarely delete photos i think to go with consumer MLC SSD. I read many endurance reviews and don't see there a problem as long we don't rewrite the cells. What you think about my idea? - I'm not sure between Raid 6 or Raid 10 (more IOPS, cost SSD). - Is ext4 OK for the filesystem - Would you use 1 or 2 Raid controller, with Extender Backplane If anyone has realized something similar i would be happy to get Real World numbers. UPDATE I have buy 12 (plus some spare) OCZ Talos 480GB SAS SSD Drive's they will be placed in a 12-bay DAS and attached to a PERC H800 (1GB NV Cache, manufactured by LSI with fastpath) Controller, I plan to setup Raid 50 with ext4. If someone is wondering about some benchmarks let me know what you would like to see.

• Application use on website

  Is there a good way to run a C# application on clientside in lieu of JavaScript? I have done some front end work with JavaScript and backend C# for web developing at an old job, but I am interested in hosting a website myself soon. I have a C# application I would like to be open source, but before people care to download I'd like them to be able to use it. At its basic level it's a simple text editor, but there's much more to it in the nitty gritty. I could write it in JavaScript, but it would require me to keep documentation and up to date changes on JavaScript and C# in that case. I was thinking of creating an AJAX panel and somehow loading my winform application into a frame, but I don't know how or what words to google because I've never done it before except AJAX.

My CV have 3 pages but for this company is not enough detailed. ;) What structure have your CV in programming languages, frameworks, technology, third-party libraries? Any sample of good structured CV. (as pdf file) Of course I had used the google but I found a dozen same old things. I would like have someting orignal and fresh. Any inspiration? I do not know what to write for example C #. C# OOP, delagate, event, generic, LINQ other WPF control, data template, converter, style, triggers..? Prims, Caliburn, MEF ?   We have been trying to setup EFS across our domain. Unfortunately Reading/Writing file over network share does not work, we get an "Access Denied" error. Another worrying fact is that I managed to get it working for 1 machine but no other would work. The machines are all Windows 2008R2, running as VM under ESXi host. According to: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457116.aspx#EHAA We setup the involved machine to be trusted for delegation The user are not restricted and can be trusted for delegation. The users have logged-in on both side and can read/write encrypted files without issues locally. I enabled Kerberos logging in the registry and this is the relevant logs that I get on the machine that has the encrypted files. In order for all certificate that the user possess (Only Key Name changes): Event ID 5058: Audit Success, "Other System Events" Key file operation. • What are cons of usage only non-member functions and POD?

  I'm creating my own game engine. I've read these articles and this question about DOD and there was written to not use member functions and classes. I also heard some criticism to this idea. I can write it using member functions or non-member functions it would be similar. So what are benefits/cons of that approach or when project grows, does any of these approaches give clearer and better manageable code? With POD & non-member functions I don't have to make struct members public I can still use object id outside of engine like OpenGL does with all it's stuff, so It's not about encapsulation. • Recommended hardware for developing ios games?

  I know you have to have mac os x to use xcode and thus to develop/compile apps for the iphone. And I'm not exactly wanting to go the hackintosh way, so I'm looking at buying a used mac. What specs are recommended. If I buy a cheap mac mini that has only 1gb of ram would that be enough? (I'm not talking about using that to create the graphics/audio, I'll use my normal windows/ubuntu pc for that). I'm just talking about being able to use xcode and write applications. I'm trying to spend the least amount I can without running into problems developing the app.

• How to find siblings of a tree?

  On my interview for an internship, I was asked following question: On a whiteboard write the simplest algorithm with use of recursion which would take a root of a so called binary tree (so called because it is not strictly speaking binary tree) and make every child in this tree connected with its sibling. So if I have: 1 / \ 2 3 / \ \ 4 5 6 / \ 7 8 then the sibling to 2 would be 3, to four five, to five six and to seven eight. I didn't do this, although I was heading in the right direction. Later (next day) at home I did it, but with the use of a debugger. It took me better part of two hours and 50 lines of code. I personally think that this was very difficult question, almost impossible to do correctly on a whiteboard. How would you solve it on a whiteboard? How to apprehend this question without using a debugger?

• What is the difference between "Redirection" and "Pipe"?

  This question may sound a bit stupid, but I can not really see the difference between redirection and pipes. Redirection is used to redirect the stdout/stdin/stderr, e.g. ls > log.txt. Pipes are used to give the output of a command as input to another command, e.g. ls | grep file.txt. But why are there two operators for the same thing ? Why not just write ls > grep to pass the output through, isn't this just a kind of redirection also ? What I am missing ?
