• Killing Stuck Child JVM's

  Note: This facility only applies to Oracle Utilities Application Framework products using COBOL. In some situations, the Child JVM's may spin. This causes multiple startup/shutdown Child JVM messages to be displayed and recursive child JVM's to be initiated and shunned. If the following: Unable to establish connection on port …. after waiting .. seconds.The issue can be caused intermittently by CPU spins in connection to the creation of new processes, specifically Child JVMs. Recursive (or double) invocation of the System.exit call in the remote JVM may be caused by a Process.destroy call that the parent JVM always issues when shunning a JVM. The issue may happen when the thread in the parent JVM that is responsible for the recycling gets stuck and it affects all child JVMs. If this issue occurs at your site then there are a number of options to address the issue: Configure an Operating System level kill command to force the Child JVM to be shunned when it becomes stuck. Configure a Process.destroy command to be used if the kill command is not configured or desired. Specify a time tolerance to detect stuck threads before issuing the Process.destroy or kill commands. Note: This facility is also used when the Parent JVM is also shutdown to ensure no zombie Child JVM's exit. The following additional settings must be added to the spl.properties for the Business Application Server to use this facility: spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command – Specify the command to kill the Child JVM process. This can be a command or specify a script to execute to provide additional information. The kill.command property can accept two arguments, {pid} and {jvmNumber}, in the specified string. The arguments must be enclosed in curly braces as shown here. Note: The PID will be appended to the killcmd string, unless the {pid} and {jvmNumber} arguments are specified. The jvmNumber can be useful if passed to a script for logging purposes. Note: If a script is used it must be in the path and be executable by the OS user running the system. spl.runtime.cobol.remote.destroy.enabled – Specify whether to use the Process.destroy command instead of the kill command. Specify true or false. Default value is false. Note: Unless otherwise required, it is recommended to use the kill command option if shunning JVM's is an issue. There this value can remain its default value, false, unless otherwise required. spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.delaysecs – Specify the number of seconds to wait for the Child JVM to terminate naturally before issuing the Process.destroy or kill commands. Default is 10 seconds. For example: spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command=kill -9 {pid} {jvmNumber}spl.runtime.cobol.remote.destroy.enabled=falsespl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.delaysecs=10 When a Child JVM is to be recycled, these properties are inspected and the spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command, executed if provided. This is done after waiting for spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.delaysecs seconds to give the JVM time to shut itself down. The spl.runtime.cobol.remote.destroy.enabled property must be set to true AND the spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command omitted for the original Process.destroy command to be used on the process. Note: By default the spl.runtime.cobol.remote.destroy enabled is set to false and is therefore disabled. If neither spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command nor spl.runtime.cobol.remote.destroy.enabled is specified, child JVMs will not beforcibly killed. They will be left to shut themselves down (which may lead to orphan JVMs). If both are specified, the spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command is preferred and spl.runtime.cobol.remote.destroy.enabled defaulted to false.It is recommended to invoke a script to issue the direct kill command instead of directly using the kill -9 commands.For example, the following sample script ensures that the process Id is an active cobjrun process before issuing the kill command: forcequit.sh #!/bin/shTHETIME=`date +"%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S"`if [ "$1" = "" ]then  echo "$THETIME: Process Id is required" >>$SPLSYSTEMLOGS/forcequit.log  exit 1fijavaexec=cobjrunps e $1 | grep -c $javaexecif [ $? = 0 ]then  echo "$THETIME: Process $1 is an active $javaexec process -- issuing kill-9 $1" >>$SPLSYSTEMLOGS/forcequit.log  kill -9 $1exit 0else  echo "$THETIME: Process id $1 is not a $javaexec process or not active --  kill will not be issued" >>$SPLSYSTEMLOGS/forcequit.logexit 1fi This script's name would then be specified as the value for the spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command property, for example: spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command=forcequit.sh The forcequit script does not have any explicit parameters but pid is passed automatically. To use the jvmNumber parameter it must explicitly specified in the command. For example, to call script forcequit.sh and pass it the pid and the child JVM number, specify it as follows: spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command=forcequit.sh {pid} {jvmNumber} The script can then use the JVM number for logging purposes or to further ensure that the correct pid is being killed.If the arguments are omitted, the pid is automatically appended to the spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command string. To use this facility the following patches must be installed: Patch 13719584 for Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.1, Patches 13684595 and 13634933 for Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.2 Group Fix 4 (as Patch 13640668) for Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1.

  MySQL Connector/Net 6.5.5, a new maintenance release of our 6.5 series, has been released.  This release is GA quality and is appropriate for use in production environments.  Please note that 6.6 is our latest driver series and is the recommended product for development.   Hi, Dabbling with creating an installer with inno setup- but wondering: What are the pros and cons of using registry keys (windows program) vs. .ini files that sit within the program folder? If I store all my user settings in .ini files, the entire program can be removed by deleting the folder. With registry keys i'd have to create an uninstaller / remove the key manually. Why is it that most commercial applications use registry values? I know from brief use of Macs that most programs are drag and drop. Are one of the major reasons because of the lack of a registry key in mac OS?

  we're considering migrating our UI to XBAP. we've chosen XBAP despite knowing the clients must have .net pre-installed, since we're not targeting the masses but rather IT professionals in the corporate environment, and it's a way to preserve our investment (in a WPF based UI in a client-server architecture) and enjoy web deployment. however, we are concerned about the maturity of the platform/architecture and it's adoption. do you know of any commercial applications out there using XBAP, and do you have any experience using it? can you elaborate on that experience? also, as @Murph suggested, can you think of strong reasons to prefer clickOnce over XBAP (or the other way around)?

In general we use biometrics in computer applications say for authentication. Lets get 2 examples finger prints and facial recognition. In those cases how we keep the information for comparison. As an example we can't keep a image and process it every time. So what are the methodologies we use to store/determine the similarity in such cases?   I'm building a web application using WCF that will be consumed by other applications as a service. Our app will be installed on a farm of web services and load balanced for scalability purposes. Occasionally we run into problems specific to one web server and we'd like to be able to determine from the response which web server the request was processed by and possibly timing information as well. For example, this request was processed by WebServer01 and the request took 200ms to finish. The first solution that came to mind was to build an ISAPI filter to add an HTTP header that stores this information in the response. This strikes me as the kind of thing somebody must have done before. Is there a better way to do this or an off-the-shelf ISAPI filter that I can use for this? Thanks in advance

• Runing directx samples on a Windows Mobile 6.1 device

  Hi, I tried to run the directx samples from ..\Windows Mobile 6 SDK\Samples\PocketPC\CPP\win32\directx\d3dm\tutorials on m Samsung Omnia and on the emulator and it doesn't work because a deployment error. I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and have installed Windows Mobile SDK Standard and Professional refresh. The device is correctly plugged in and set up for active sync(I know this because other samples work, also a creating Win32 smart device and running it works) When I try to run the application it compiles without errors but the message: " There were deployment errors, Continue? Yes/No" appears If I manually copy the application from the debug folder to the device and run it from there, it works. The same deployment error message appears if I try it on an emulator. Other applications are deploying successfully. Is there any way to make the deployment work? Maybe there is an obscure option I need to set... Thank you

It's working and I can see the video added to camera roll. But, the problem is every time I execute the application with same video(with same file name), it is added another time in camera roll instead of replacing the old one. So, it is creating the duplicates of the video. How can I make the application work like if a video is present in camera roll and again added with same file name, then old one is replaced by new video.

• What technical skills needed for algorithmic trading, HFT, etc?

  I'm interested in getting into developing trading systems, black box, HFT, etc. My primary experience is with C# and .Net (7 years). I've also done some sockets programming. I have some experience in finance working on analysis applications (2 years). My goal is to move into developing automated trading systems for a hedge fund, bank, etc. Is there any way to learn the skills needed for this without somehow getting the job first? I've looked at the open source tradelink, IB interactive brokerage, etc. I'm playing around with this framework, and may hook it up and do some paper trading. However, I'm not sure if this has much relationship with how a well-funded entity would be conducting a high-level automated trading operation. I.e. would the tools and frameworks they prefer be a totally different skill-set? Also wondering if I need to learn C++ and/or Java for these types of apps.

  see also Is “Code Access Security” of any real world use? I want to get some other opinions on this... I like the idea of Code Access Security for desktop applications. But in the lifetime of .NET I have to admit I've never actually had a situation where CAS has actually blocked something to my benefit. I have, however, had many times where something as simple as sharing a quick .NET application across a mapped drive becomes an enterprise code access nightmare. Having to break out caspol.exe to create trusted path rules and having no clear way of knowing why something failed makes it seem like CAS adds way more frustration to the development and deployment process than it offers in security. I'd like to hear either some situations where CAS has actually helped more than hurt, or if there are other people out there frustrated with its current implementation and defaults.

• Visual Studio 2008 Add-in: App.config and web services.

  I have created a visual studio add-in for VS2008. The add-in uses as web service to access data required by the developer. However, currently the only way to get the service to work is to add the service bindings to the machine.config of the pc. I know this is a bad idea and its causing errors left and right in my other applications. I have tried using app.config along side my add-in but the add-in doesn't seem to use it at all. My service call is being made from a dll referenced by the add-in would that make a difference?

  I'm looking for a free face recognition library for a university project. I'm not looking for face detection. I'm looking for actual recognition. That means finding images that contain specified faces or libraries that calculate distances between specific faces. I'm using OpenCV for detecting the faces and a rough Eigenfaces Algorithm for the recognition now. But I thought there should be something out there with a better performance then a self written Eigenfaces Algorithm. I don't talk about speed as performance I'm looking for a library with better results as an simple Eigenfaces approach I took a look at faint but it seems the library is not very reusable for my own applications. I'm happy with a library in Python, Java, C++, C or something like that. The best thing would be if it can be run on a Windowsmachine

  Hi all, I am trying to cutback on the memory usage of my server and would like to optimize the architecture. I currently deploy 2 separate web applications to Jetty 6.1.22 that correspond to different virtualhosts. They have pretty much the same application stack except one has fewer components and are styled differently (content, images, css, etc.). If I change my design pattern over to EJB / EAR + 2 WARS embedded, will that lower the memory consumption? Will that give me a single instance of JBoss Seam, Quartz, and all of my components? • Disable CTRL+P in WPF DocumentViewer

  I'm working on a new presenation component for one of our applications. I am building a Custom WPF Control that just has a DocumentViewer in it and hosting that CC in a Windows Forms application with an ElementHost. I'm using Visual Studio 2008 with C#. I have customized everything through the XAML to give it the look and feel that integrates it perfecting into our application, but one thing remains... If you press CTRL+P the print dialog still comes up. I'm at a complete loss as to how to disable that fuction. The use of this CC is to allow the users to pull up and view the Manuals for the systems installed at that site, but we don't want them to accidently print them (100s of pages). Please help, -G

  Hi all, I am newbie for integer linear programming. I plan to use a integer linear programming solver to solve my combinational optimization problem. I am more familiar with C++/object oriented programming on an IDE. Now I am using NetBeans with Cygwin to write my applications most of time. May I ask if there is an easy use ILP solver for me? • django auth : strange error with authenticate()

  I am using authenticate() to authenticating users manually. • Can someone recommend a bells and whistles CSS framework?

  I am looking for a bells and whistles CSS framework. I have found a number online that deal with "grids", and some that deal with "typography" and others that deal with "resetting". What I have not found is something that will give my web applications a consistent reusable style or theme. I guess it would have to have a number of predefined elements that do things, for example: div.boxed {...} And then a number of themes or plugins that provide these in a consistent way. Javascript toolkits like ExtJS, YUI, and also GWT have their own skinability, and I guess this is the featureset that I want, but independent of any Javascript library. (Open source would be best, but we don't mind paying) Edit: 5 good answers, but I have seen all those frameworks, and they are not enough of what I am looking for. Perhaps what I am looking for doesn't exist. Or I haven't explained properly. I will give them a good going over and see.
