  • Best SEO practices for mobile URLs: 301, rel=canonical, or something else?

    I am developing a site with a mobile version and am trying to figure the appropriate way to manage the URLs for search engines. So far I've considered: Having a mobile site with rel="canonical" links to the regular site. Putting both the mobile site and full site on one URL, and doing user agent sniffing. Another opinion: Spencer: "If you have a mobile site at a separate location or URL, you should 301 redirect each and every mobile page to its corresponding page on your main website. Employ user agent detection so that the mobile optimized version is served up if someone's coming in from a hand-held. - http://developer.practicalecommerce.com/articles/1722-Mobile-site-Development-Best-Practices-for-SEO-Usability Both 2 and 3 make it hard for a user who wants to switch to the full site or mobile site manually, but I'm not sure 1 is the best alternative. I have a website which is called let's say www.website1.com on different hosting provider(siteground) I have www.website2.com Now,www.website1.com is the old website and the boss wants .. IF someone clicks on www.website1.com/user/content/1, he/she should be redirected to www.website2.com/user/content/1 ,but the url should REMAIN www.website1.com/user/content/1 and the same thing for all the pages.     OK, now that we have a very rough idea of what we are building, let’s get a list of the top features that this application needs to allow us to do.  In this next list we are not prioritizing them yet, just getting on paper the high level backlog of items that this system must do. Change the Covey roles per user Manage the statuses used Manage the Covey quadrants Can we make this available on the following user interfaces?     I’m feeling inspired and I’d like to share a technique we’ve implemented in Sitecore to address a URL mapping from our legacy site that we wanted to carry over to the new beautiful Littelfuse.com. The challenge is to carry over all of our series URLs that have been published in our datasheets, we currently have a lot of series and having to create a manual mapping for those could be really tedious. It has the format of http://www.littelfuse.com/series/series-name.html, for instance, http://www.littelfuse.com/series/flnr.html. It would have been easier if we have our information architecture defined like this but that would have been too easy. I took a solution that is 2-fold. First, I need to create a URL rewrite rule using the IIS URL Rewrite Module 2.0. Secondly, we need to implement a handler that will take care of the actual lookup of the actual series. It will be amazing after we’ve gone over the details. Let’s start with the URL rewrite. Create a new blank rule, you can name it with anything you wish. The key part here to talk about is the Pattern and the Action groups. The Pattern is nothing but regex. Basically, I’m telling it to match the regex I have defined. In the Action group, I am telling it what to do, in this case, rewrite to the redirect.aspx webform. In this implementation, I will be using Rewrite instead of redirect so the URL sticks in the browser. If you opt to use Redirect, then the URL bar will display the new URL our webform will redirect to. Let me explain one small thing, the (\w+) in my Pattern group’s regex, will actually translate to {R:1} in my Action’s group. This is where the magic begins. Now let’s see what our Redirect.aspx contains. Remember our {R:1} above which becomes the query string variable s? This are basic .Net code. The only thing that you will probably ask is the LFSearch class. It’s our own implementation of addressing finding items by using a field search, we supply the fieldname, the value of the field, the template name of the item we are after, and the value of true or false if we want to do an exact search, or not. If eureka, then redirect to that item’s Path (Url). If not, tell the user tough luck, here’s the 404 page as a consolation. Amazing, ain’t it?

I need to connect my desktop (which is also a ubuntu machine) to the ubuntu server using SSH. I have installed open-ssh in ubuntu server.     While putting together some examples of the Solaris 11 Automated Installer (AI), I managed to really mess up my system, to the point where AI was completely unusable. This was my fault as a combination of unfortunate incidents left some remnants that were causing problems, so I tried to clean things up. Unsuccessfully. Perhaps that was a bad idea (OK, it was a terrible idea), but this is Solaris 11 and there are a few more tricks in the sysadmin toolbox.   • Windows Azure Use Case: High-Performance Computing (HPC)

    This is one in a series of posts on when and where to use a distributed architecture design in your organization's computing needs. You can find the main post here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/buckwoody/archive/2011/01/18/windows-azure-and-sql-azure-use-cases.aspx  Description: High-Performance Computing (also called Technical Computing) at its most simplistic is a layout of computer workloads where a “head node” accepts work requests, and parses them out to “worker nodes'”. This is useful in cases such as scientific simulations, drug research, MatLab work and where other large compute loads are required. It’s not the immediate-result type computing many are used to; instead, a “job” or group of work requests is sent to a cluster of computers and the worker nodes work on individual parts of the calculations and return the work to the scheduler or head node for the requestor in a batch-request fashion. This is typical to the way that many mainframe computing use-cases work. You can use commodity-based computers to create an HPC Cluster, such as the Linux application called Beowulf, and Microsoft has a server product for HPC using standard computers, called the Windows Compute Cluster that you can read more about here. The issue with HPC (from any vendor) that some organization have is the amount of compute nodes they need. Having too many results in excess infrastructure, including computers, buildings, storage, heat and so on. Having too few means that the work is slower, and takes longer to return a result to the calling application. Unless there is a consistent level of work requested, predicting the number of nodes is problematic. Implementation: Recently, Microsoft announced an internal partnership between the HPC group (Now called the Technical Computing Group) and Windows Azure. You now have two options for implementing an HPC environment using Windows. You can extend the current infrastructure you have for HPC by adding in Compute Nodes in Windows Azure, using a “Broker Node”.  You can then purchase time for adding machines, and then stop paying for them when the work is completed. This is a common pattern in groups that have a constant need for HPC, but need to “burst” that load count under certain conditions. The second option is to install only a Head Node and a Broker Node onsite, and host all Compute Nodes in Windows Azure. This is often the pattern for organizations that need HPC on a scheduled and periodic basis, such as financial analysis or actuarial table calculations.   • Some of my favourite Visual Studio 2012 things&ndash;Teams

    Getting the balance right for when and how many team projects to create has always been a bit of a balance.  On large initiatives, there are often teams who work toward a common system.  These teams often have quite a bit of autonomy, but need to roll up to some higher level initiative.  In TFS 2010, people were often tempted to create separate Team Projects for each of the sub-teams and then do some magic with reporting and cross-team queries to get the consolidated view.  My recommendation was always to use Areas as a means of separating work across the team, but that always resulted in a large number of queries that need to be maintained and just seemed confusing.  When doing anything you had to remember to filter the query or view by Area in order to get correct results. Along with the awesome web access portal that comes in TFS 2012 (which I will cover details of in another post) the product group has introduced the concept of Teams.  A team is a sub-group within a TFS 2012 Team Project which allows us to more easily divide work along team boundaries. Technically, a Team is defined by an Area Path and a TFS Group, both of which could be done in TFS 2012.  However, by allowing for creation of a ‘Team’ in TFS 2012, the web portal is able to do a bunch of ‘magic’ for us.  We can view the project site (backlog, taskboard, etc) for the the team, we can assign items to the team and we can view the burndown for the team.  Basically, all the stuff that we had to prepare manually we now get created and managed for us with a nice UI. When you create a Team Project in TFS 2012, a ‘Default’ team is created with the same name as the Team Project.  So, if you only have 1 team working on the project, you are set.  If you want to divide the work into additional teams, you can create teams by using the Team Web Client. Teams are created using the ‘Administer Server’ icon in the top right of the web site.   You can select the team site by using the team chooser: Once you have selected a team, the Product Backlog, TaskBoard, Burndown Charts, etc. are all filtered to that team. NOTE: You always have the ability to choose the ‘Default’ team to see items for the entire project.   • Expected sprint completion rate and load in scrum?

    Recently at work there have been increased focus on completion rate and load on the developers in our sprints. With completion rate I mean, if we plan 20 user stories for a sprint, what percentage of these user stories are closed at the end of the sprint. And with load I mean, if we have a sprint with 3 developers of 60 hours each, i.e. 180 hours for the sprint, how many hours worth of user stories do we schedule for the sprint. So I am really interested in others experience with this, I guess this is something everybody working with scrum deals with. My question is, what completion rate and load are expected/usual, and how are your team doing with respect to these parameters?

  • Samba smb.conf read only and read/write accounts

    Below you can see my smb.conf, pieter is my admin user read/write on the shares works good with that account. Then I have a leecher account that has been added with smbpasswd -a leecher to the smb users, it is set up so this user only has read access to the shares. This works on MegaSam and on Thumbnails but not on my other drives, leecher does not get any access on the other shares.   • Mobile redirect strategy

    Looking for help on deciding how to redirect users to a mobile optimized version of my site (m.mysite.com). Looking at two methods: Server configuration (.htaccess or even varnish) Webapp (php) The problem I see with #1 is with the "view full site" link on the mobile site. If a user clicks that link and they go to mysite.com won't the server just redirect them back to m.mysite.com? For #2 I could create a cookie that is checked in addition to the user agent. Any suggestions/comments? Is there a better way to "remember" if the user clicked "visit full site"? Thanks, Kevin

  • How can I block abusive bots from accessing my Heroku app?

    My Heroku (Bamboo) app has been getting a bunch of hits from a scraper identifying itself as GSLFBot. Googling for that name produces various results of people who've concluded that it doesn't respect robots.txt (eg, http://www.0sw.com/archives/96). I'm considering updating my app to have a list of banned user-agents, and serving all requests from those user-agents a 400 or similar and adding GSLFBot to that list. Is that an effective technique, and if not what should I do instead? (As a side note, it seems weird to have an abusive scraper with a distinctive user-agent.)

  • Eclipse juno: Can't install RadRails throws error for a gem I have installed already

    The thing is I installed Ubuntu 12.04, Java (for Eclipse), Eclipse, ruby, ruby gems, rails. Everything went smooth. When I tried to prepare Eclipse for ruby on rails, I installed ruby dev kit plugin. This worked, but RadRails failed with this error: Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found.   • JQuery and the multiple date selector

    Overview I recently needed to build a web page that would allow a user to capture some information and most importantly select multiple dates. This functionality was core to the application and hence had to be easy and quick to do. This is a public facing website so it had to be intuitive and very responsive. On the face of it it didn't seem too hard, I know enough juery to know what it is capable of and I was pretty sure that there would be some plugins that would help speed things along the way. I'm using ASP.Net MVC for this project as I really like the control that it gives you over the generated html and javascript. After years of Web Forms development it makes me feel like a web developer again and puts a smile on my face, that can only be a good thing!   The Calendar The first item that I needed on this page was a calender and I wanted the ability to: have the calendar be always visible select/deselect multiple dates at the same time bind to the select/deselect event so that I could update a seperate listing of the selected dates allow the user to move to another month and still have the calender remember any dates in the previous month I was hoping that there was a jQuery plugin that would meet my requirements and luckily there was! The jQuery datepicker does everything I want and there is quite a bit of documentation on how to use it. It makes use of a javascript date library date.js which I had not come across before but has a number of very useful date utilities that I have used elsewhere in the project. As you can see from the image there still needs to be some styling done! But there will be plenty of time for that later. The calendar clearly shows which dates the user has selected in red and i also make use of an unordered list to show the the selected dates so the user can always clearly see what has been selected even if they move to another month on the calendar. The ones I am particularly interested in are selectedDate and state. State tells me whether the user has selected or deselected the date passed in the selectedDate parameter. The <ul> that I am using to show the date has an id of dateList and this is what I will be adding and removing <li> items from. To make things a little more logical for the user I decided that the date should be sorted in chronological order, this means that each time a new date is selected it need to be placed in the correct position in the list. One way to do this would be just to append a new <li> to the list and then sort the whole list. However the approach I took was to get an array of all the items in the list var listitems = ('#dateList').children('li').get(); and then check the value of each item in the array against my new date and as soon as I found the case where the new date was less than the current item remember that position in the list as this is where I would insert it later. To make this work easily I decided to store a numeric representation of each date in the list in the id attribute of each <li> element. Fortunately javascript natively stores dates as the number of milliseconds since 1 Jan 1970. var dateInMillisecs = selectedDate.valueOf(); Please note that this is the value of the date in UTC! I always like to store dates in UTC as I learnt a long time ago that it saves a lot of refactoring at a later date... When I convert the dates back to their original back on the server I will need the UTC offset that was used when calculating the dates, this and how to actually serialise the dates and get them posted back will be the subject of another post.
