  • Does a 77 Year Old Person Like To Use iPhone Siri? Of course!

    When Apple releases any product, they just work irrespective of age, capability and ability of the users. It’s in the DNA of Steve Jobs and his colleagues at Apple to build products that just work with out any learning curve. The recent iPhone is loaded with Siri, an intelligent personal assistant. But can a 77 year old person quickly learn to use Siri for his day to day activities? Lets hear from a son who trained his 77 year old dad to use Siri on iPhone He caught on much faster than I thought he might. I was feeling proud of him and believed Siri would be a real productivity help in his life — seeing that, at 77, my dad still works full time as a realtor. I was encouraged that he really liked and would use his new personal assistant. Or at least I was until my mom called later that night. "Your father and I were just practicing with his new phone," Sigh. Well Siri will be great for my dad…if and when he remembers how to find her.   • .NET development on Macs

    I posted the “exciting” conclusion of my laptop trade-ins and issues on my personal blog. The links, in chronological order, are posted below. While those posts have all of the details about performance and software used, I wanted to comment on why I like using Macs in the first place. It started in 2006 when Apple released the first Intel-based Mac. As someone with a professional video past, I had been using Macs on and off since college (1995 graduate), so I was never terribly religious about any particular platform. I’m still not, but until recently, it was staggering how crappy PC’s were. They were all plastic, disposable, commodity crap. I could never justify buying a PowerBook because I was a Microsoft stack guy. When Apple went Intel, they removed that barrier. They also didn’t screw around with selling to the low end (though the plastic MacBooks bordered on that), so even the base machines were pretty well equipped. Every Mac I’ve had, I’ve used for three years. Other than that first one, I’ve also sold each one, for quite a bit of money. Things have changed quite a bit, mostly within the last year. I’m actually relieved, because Apple needs competition at the high end. Other manufacturers are finally understanding the importance of industrial design. For me, I’ll stick with Macs for now, because I’m invested in OS X apps like Aperture and the Mac versions of Adobe products. As a Microsoft developer, it doesn’t even matter though… with Parallels, I Cmd-Tab and I’m in Windows. So after three and a half years with a wonderful 17” MBP and upgraded SSD, it was time to get something lighter and smaller (traveling light is critical with a toddler), and I eventually ended up with a 13” MacBook Air, with the i7 and 8 gig upgrades, and I love it. At home I “dock” it to a Thunderbolt Display.   • Ubuntu 12.04 + Bluetooth problems with maintaining connection

    I have an Apple Wireless Mouse, Apple Wireless Keyboard, Apple Wireless Trackpad, and a pair of headphones. All of these connect to the computer via a Bluetooth dongle. After several hours I've managed to get the devices paired (all except the headphones) with the computer. However, I'm facing a problem where a connection can't be maintained even with one device. I first started with the gnome bluetooth applet, this couldn't even pick up devices, so I installed blueman, and this at least detected the devices but it couldn't keep the connection going. Then i read somewhere to get hidd installed and use the command line using the mac address of the device (which I got from blueman) and this worked really well, the connection was stable, but there's still a couple of issues that I need help with: If I am to use hidd I need to execute this via terminal, which means for the keyboard and the mouse I need to have two of each. This doesn't make sense. I need the bluetooth daemon to have started with the devices picked up a lot earlier, and especially at grub bootloader. The mouse and the trackpad both work if i use hidd, however, I cannot get the right mouse to work nor the scroll wheel to work. The headphones don't work period, they don't work with any of the bluetooth applets, and with hidd either. When I use blueman aplet, it attempts to pair and states 'Authentication Rejected". The headphone is Phillips SHB9100. If someone can help me with this, I would be grateful.

  • Android remote service doesn't call service methods

    Hello, I'm developing a GPS tracking software on android. I need IPC to control the service from different activities. So I decide to develop a remote service with AIDL. This wasn't a big problem but now it's always running into the methods of the interface and not into those of my service class. Maybe someone could help me?     Hello, I have this code in my .htaccess: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^(.*)\+apple\+fruit/$ ?q=$1 [L] this turns the searchquery in /keyword+apple+fruit/ thats ok.. the only problem is, if I type in /keyword+apple+fruit +any+text+haha+ apple+fruit/ the htacces is showing content - but I don't want that. is there any command to say - ok apple + fruit only one time in the url and the second time send a 404 or show nothing.. thank you!!

  • Push notifications work for Ad Hoc, but not when downloaded from the Apple store.

    My app just got approved for the apple store. I downloaded it an installed it on my iPhone - but it looks like push notifications are broken! I was successfully testing push notifications in production using an adHoc provisioning profile. I had no problems. The only thing I did differently when I submitted to apple was using an app store distribution profile. The application never asks me (or anyone else who has downloaded it) if I want to receive push notifications. Consequently, the phone never talks to my server to send the push token (because application:didRegisterForRemoteNotificationsWithDeviceToken: is presumably never called). Also the application does not appear in the settings app under the notification settings. What could I be doing wrong??

  • how can I develop Apple Java Extensions on Windows?

    When I do multi-platform testing on Windows it gets annoying that Eclipse shows errors in the project because of the com.apple.eawt code that I have in a special Mac customization task. Worse yet, if I export a runnable jar on Windows, it won't run on mac because of the unresolved compilation problems. What's the best way to let Windows Java and com.apple.eawt live in peace? I can't see how I would be able to spin off the code to a jar, since it requires access to lots of the program's state. Thanks for your help!   • Are Mac Minis suitable for a proper desktop computer?

    I've read about a lot of people using their Mac Minis as a file server, or media centre or something similar. Does the mini function alright as a standard desktop PC? The Mac will be used primarily for web development, that is, it will need to run Coda, Photoshop, possible Firefox and Safari at the same time. So it will need suitable performance. Or am I better off getting an iMac? I though the mini looked like a good option because: cheaper I already have a keyboard, mouse and 24" monitor I could use a KVM between the mini and PC Also, does the mini support multiple monitors?     Smart TV Remote is an unofficial Android app that lets you control Samsung Smart TVs connected over a local WiFi network. This app comes very handy when you want to control your TV which is not in line of sight of your TV remote control or just want to use your mobile phone/tablet to control the TV. Setting up a TV  is very easy using auto scan feature . Once the TV is setup, you are all set to start using the app as a remote control. A traditional remote controls makes use of infra red technology and it needs to be in the line of sight of the TV receiver to work. But this app make use of WiFi technology which give it flexibility of controlling the TV as long as the mobile & TV is connected to WiFi network. It just works even if the TV is behind a wall. The App provides very easy to use options to switch between channels and separate remotes with media controls, smart hub features and a numeric key pad if you want to navigate to a channel through its number. The App also provides a home screen widget with volume controls and channel navigation options. I use  this App to control Samsung E Series Smart Tv at home and it works very well. I’m impressed by the ease at which it allows to setup a TV, support for multiple TVs, controlling the TV though I’m not in the line of sight and using volume buttons of smart phone to control volume of TV. What’s annoying and missing with the app As advertised the app works very well in controlling Samsung TVs (B-, C-, D- E-, and F-Series) except it is very painful to move mouse pointer while browsing web on TV. When you try to move mouse pointer using the App, it mouse painfully slow especially. I gave us using the app to control mouse pointer after trying couple of times. I installed this App thinking that it may help me browse web on Smart TVs, especially a key board support to type web urls. App does not supports entering text either while browsing web or searching through Smart TV apps like YouTube, App Store etc. Developers of this App never advertised keyboard support so no complaints about this. But it would be very helpful if the developers allow this app use as a keyboard and rescue me from the pain of typing text using TV Remote control.     I was just wondering how possible it is to connect a remote control to a Windows 7 system. I’m connecting the computer to a 24" TV via HDMI to be used as a TV, playing things mainly through VLC. Clearly I don’t want to have to access the PC every time I want to change something. The problem is that I have no idea how to configure a remote to a PC, or even what remote will do the job. I’m not looking for anything overly flashy or in the $100-$200 range, but something that is functional and will get the job done.

  • Configure SQL Server to Allow Remote Connections

    Okay. This post isn’t about configuring SQL to allow remote connections, but wait, I still may be able to help you out. "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 – Could not open a connection to SQL Server)" I love this exception. It summarized the issue and leads you down a path to solving the problem.  I do wish the bit about allowing remote connections was left out of the message though. I can’t think of a time when having remote connections disabled caused me grief.  Heck, I can’t ever remember how to enable remote connections unless I Google for the answer. Anyway, 9 out of 10 times, SQL Server simply isn’t running.  That’s why the exception occurs.  The next time this exception pops up, open up the services console and make sure SQL Server is started.  And if that’s not the problem, only then start digging into the other possible reasons for the failure.

  • Cannot log on to a remote server using rdp from windows 7 machine when I am remotley connected to th

    Bear withe me, here is my set up. I use my 27" iMac 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo 4GB Ram to connect to my work desktop running Windows 7. From there I can administer other remote servers. Here is the problem. Using the Remote Desktop Client on my Mac I can connect to my work machine no problem. But when I then use the work machine to open a remote desktop session with another Windows server (usually SBS 2003 but applies to all) I get the log in prompt, I enter the user name password ensure i'm connecting to the domain, but it wont log me in. The error message is the same, as though I had typed the wrong password (i know this is not the case). Does anyone have a solution? Thanks in advance. Gary

    So tonight this convo happened: Intrigued, I viewed the video Lee mentions and found that its the now infamous Brent Ozar video which shows a bug in Word on the Surface RT (you can read this article which talks about the tempest in a teacup that ensued). But Lee is correct – in the video, when Brent starts up Word 2013, we see this: That sure does look like a desktop doesn’t it! But…aren’t Windows RT devices *not* supposed to come with a desktop? Actually, it does. However, it’s not a *full* desktop. From Seth Rosenblatt’s fantastic Windows RT FAQ article: Windows RT will have a Desktop mode, but it will be restricted to pre-installed, Microsoft-produced software. This will include touch-optimized versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote as the new Microsoft Office So yes, there’s a desktop mode in Windows RT but no, you won’t be able to install apps to it. [Desktop Entry] Name=Sublime Text 2 GenericName=Sublime Text 2 Comment=Edit text files Exec=/home/user/opt/sublime/Sublime Text 2/sublime_text %U However, running that from Nautilus's context menu using Open with this gives me Could not find '/home/user/opt/sublime/Sublime' So I tried Exec="/home/user/opt/sublime/Sublime Text 2/sublime_text" %U and got Text ended before matching quote was found for ". (The text was '"/home/user/opt/sublime/Sublime') What is the correct way to escape spaces in the Exec line of .desktop files?

  • How to get the Ubuntu look back after installing lubuntu-desktop

    I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 13.10. I wanted to try out Lubuntu, so I installed the package lubuntu-desktop. Everthing worked fine, I can do Lubuntu sessions now, as well as normal Ubuntu sessions with unity. I realized that I liked unity better. Unfortunately, since I installed lubuntu-desktop my login screen and my notifications look different. How can I revert this and get my old Ubuntu look back? I already removed the package lubuntu-desktop, but it did’t help. Also, when I installed it, it came with a lot of packages that weren’t removed when I removed lubuntu-desktop
