• Distributed Nagios Installation

  I'm looking for a plug-in or product that will act as a remote probe and perform tests then send back the results to the central Nagios server. Reason for this is that I'd like to monitor internal systems and servers at customers, but don't want to allow all the traffic passing the firewalls. Ideally I'd like a soft-probe that would be installed and then perform the tests and send back the results (via SSH) to the central Nagios installation. Does anyone know of a product or plug-in that would offer such service? If not Nagios, is there any other monitoring system that does such a thing (ideally open-source)?

• Best way to replicate servers

  I currently have two servers both with linux software RAID1 configurations. They use heartbeat and DRBD to create a shared DRBD device that hosts a a exported NFS directory. The servers run Ubuntu Server with a LXDE GUI and some IP These servers are going to be placed on fishing vessels to act has redundant storage for IP cameras. My boss wants me to figure out the most efficient way to create these servers. We might be looking at pushing out several systems a week. Each configuration will be almost identical besides IP addressing. What would be the best method to automate the configuration process? We are trying to cut down on labor costs to set these up. • Wireless bridge between two prolink adsl modem/router

  Allright, so i've got 2 prolink hurricane h5004n. Its a broadband adsl modem and router. My Pc is connected to the first one via ethernet. What i want to do is a wireless bridge to make the 2 routers "talk". I've tried hooking up the dsl cable (as they are modems) in both to try but when one disconnects as the other connects. I don't really know about the configurations to be done of all the DCHP or RIP and NAT forwarding stuffs. (i'm just writing what i saw) In short i want the second router to act as a wifi repeater but i don't see any repeater option and i also do not want to connect them via ethernet. So is it possible to do something? Apart from buying another repeater i don't want to spend anymore i'm done :S

• DNS: domain2 points to domain1

  I have one domain ("domain1") that is set up with hosting and mail (hosted by Gmail Apps). This domain works perfectly. I want a second domain ("domain2") to forward to domain1, but I don't want to use "DNS Forwarding." I would like to have it act EXACTLY like domain1, so that domain2/whatever points to the same resource as domain1/whatever WITHOUT AN HTTP REDIRECT NOR BROWSER TRICKS LIKE FRAMES. I would also love to be able to send mail to "blah@domain2" and have it go to "blah@domain1". Can this be set up, and how? I am using GoDaddy as registrar and DNS host for both domains. GoDaddy is also the web host for domain1, and mail hosting is with Google Apps.

• Unable to ping remote server Nagios

  We've recently set up Nagios on one of our Amazon EC2 instances to act as a monitoring server to our other instances. nrpe was installed on our staging server stager and appears to be working fine: monitoring_server~: /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H xx.xx.xx.xx -p 5666 NRPE v2.12 The issue is - when viewing the remote server stager within the Nagios admin screen - it appears to be 'DOWN'. The check_ping command reveals: monitoring_server~: /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_ping -H 'xx.xx.xx.xx' -w 5000,100% -c 5000,100% -p 1 PING CRITICAL - Packet loss = 100%|rta=5000.000000ms;5000.000000;5000.000000;0.000000 pl=100%;100;100;0 Can anyone provide some direction on how to get this working? • Webcam microphone input in Gnome/pulseaudio

  Just got a "Trust" webcam, which gets recognized on my Ubuntu Lucid. It has a built in microphone - which also gets recognized - however, I cannot really get it to act as the system microphone input? Here are some screenshots of what is shown by gnome-volume-control: The default window shows Trust webcam - which has two profiles: "Analog Mono Input" and "Off" - of course, I have it on "Analog Mono Input": However, on the "Input" tab - there is no matching "device for sound input" - neither a matching connector: Then I installed pavucontrol - but that doesn't show that much more; it tells first that gnome-volume-control reads from "Internal Audio Analog Stereo": Then in "Input devices" tab, there is again nothing resembling the mic input from webcam: Finally, under "Configuration" tab, the "Trust" webcam shows, but even if its profile is on "Analog Mono Input", nothing much happens:   So, does anyone know how I could get this webcam microphone to be recognized as the system input?   I don't remember modifying CentOS useradd to get this behavior. useradd in CentOS creates the user's home directory with all the normal files (like .bashrc). I modified /etc/default/useradd to make it looks like CentOS (just required some uncommenting) except for Ubuntu having SHELL=/bin/sh instead of SHELL=/bin/bash How do I make useradd act like it does in CentOS? Is there some existing option to change? Or should I just add an alias to /etc/bash.bashrc? The difference: On Ubuntu, useradd is not creating the home directory. as root: $ useradd test $ cd ~test -su: cd: /home/test: No such file or directory

  I am using IIS as a webserver on my development machine for PHP webdevelopment. Or at least, I am trying to. When there is a syntax error in a PHP script and I open that file in my webbrowser, I just get an 503 "internal server error" and the default IIS error page for this error. Some browsers dont open that file at all, possibly because of the 503 HTTP Response Header. I would like IIS to act in that case just like the apache webserver: display the PHP file with the error anyway, so that the error message gets printed out. How can this be done? EDIT: PHP settings: display_errors is on and error_reporting is set to E_ALL

• Why doesn't VisualSVN enforce credentials correctly?

  I have a svn repository that is managed by VisualSVN. I have created a new group and added two new users to that group. When i attach this group to an existing repository and set the rights to Read/Write, these rights do not work on subdirectories. i have to set the rights on every subdirectory. but even then, the users of this group can only read the repository, they can't write anything to it. It works for the new users when i create a new repository. The users use tortoisesvn and get a message like this when they try to write to this repository for example https://myserver:8443/svn/subdir/Application/trunk access to /svn/subdir/!svn/act/76a4c6fd-fa15-594a-a419-18493dacaf51' forbidden

• User reduced LVM logical volume without resizing filesystem

  I received an email yesterday that one of our users was trying to make room for a heartbeat/clustering package which requires its own partition to act as a voting disk. To do this, he attempted to reduce the size of the root partition's logical volume, and then create a new logical volume for this purpose. However, he forgot to resize the filesystem first (or include the -r switch in the command). He also forgot to unmount the root partition by running this process from a rescue cd. The system is now refusing to boot into the OS with the following error: Either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt! Unexpected Inconsistency; run fsck manually. The system them drops the user into single user mode. Is it possible to rescue the filesystem, or is it hosed? Its running ext3.

• Adding a Windows Server 2012 Essentials server to an existing domain, without migrating the AD

  I have an existing Active Directory in house, a mix between a Win2K8R2 and Win2K3 domain, and i would like to test out Windows Server 2012 Essentials BETA on the network. When walking though the install, it gives me the option of a new domain, or migrating from an existing domain. when clicking existing, it tells me i can only have one SBS server running on a domain at a time... So, i dont have any existing SBS servers in house (both are full standard or enterprise editions) but i do plan on keeping at least one of these extra servers running... So, how do i get a 2012 Essentials server to join a domain, and not migrate the existing domain? or if i do migrate, can i still get one of the other boxes to act as secondary controllers?

  I have a 4 port Digium card in there, and have 4 lines running smoothly. Now, we added ANOTHER 4 port card and have 4 more analog lines coming into the Trixbox server. It still runs the 4 fine, but what do I need to do to add the additional 4 phone numbers/lines? I want it to act exactly as before, there's nothing special about the new lines.   I want to plot an rgb image with gnuplot, and it must be hovering inside a 3d plot box, so that it can act as a "floor" for my data. How can I do it ? THe gnuplot examples use a heatmap to map the rgb values, but this is not what I want. Apart from receiving an error GNUPLOT (plot_image): Color boxes cannot handle RGB components. It is not what I want in any case. I need the full rgb data in the box, not mapped through a heatmap.

• How to use 2 or more internet connections on the same network?

  Living in a joint family we have 3 internet connections, each floor has one internet connection which is split per floor. Each internet connection is shared between 4-5 computers using a switch per floor. Each of these internet sharing networks are independent of each other. What I want to achieve here is a local network (for local messenger and file sharing) that can combine all the 3 independent networks, problem is that whenever I try to do that the whole network tends to use just one internet connection. I have all the necessary hardware. How do I solve this problem, one approach could be that I could get one PC to act as a server and bridge the internet connections and then the whole network would have to access the internet through this server. Theoretically this could be possible but I have never tried this approach in real life. Also if certain computers need be restricted from internet access how would this be possible on the same network?

• Minimum Requirements for (open) Solaris?

  I'm thinking about knocking together a Solaris box at home to act as a combination server and learning exercise. What are the minimum hardware specs I can throw at it such that it'll be actually usable? I'd be cobbling the machine together from a stack of various x86 PC spares/leftovers. Does anyone have experience with Solaris at the lower end of the spectrum? The Sun site, for example, claims it'll run with as little as 255 megs of ram, but is it worth the exercise with less than a gig? Will my old Pentium II 450 cut the mustard? (I'm willing to throw a couple of bucks at pricewatch/mwave/newegg on this, but if I need to build a better rig than my main PC, I may not bother.)

  I am attempting to setup automatic logon for a windows 7 kiosk computer via the registry. I have set the values under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon like this: AutoAdminLogon = 1 ForceAutoLogon = 1 DisableCAD = 1 I have filled out the username and password fields. I have also deleted all EULA related values (a prerequisite of ForceAutoLogon) I have done this procedure on 2 computers. On computer A: When rebooting, we logon automatically. When logging out from the start menu, we logon automatically immediately after logging out. On computer B: When rebooting, we logon automatically. When logging out from the start menu, we are presented with a logon menu where the user needs to click a user name & then enter a password. It seems like the value of ForceAutoLogon requires some other prerequisite that is met on computer A, but not on computer B. What do I need to make computer B act like computer A when clicking the log off button from the windows start menu?

  I am having trouble navigating through files on OS X. That is, creating files, copying, moving, and so on. I am currently using the Finder, but the act of clicking with the mouse is not very efficient. Acessing a deep folder takes a considerable amount of time and you'll have to know it's entire path. When I try to use the command line it is even worse. Going to a folder requires at least typing it's entire path with the 'cd' command; and, when you are there, you don't have full control over it. For example, how would you move 3 specific files to another folder? Some text editors offer a 'fuzzy search' function that allows a very fast form of jumping through files. What is a fast, efficient way to navigate through files on OS X?

• Is it possible to make Ctrl+C as responsive as Ctrl+Break in the Windows 7 console?

  Is it possible to make Ctrl+C act like Ctrl+Break in the Windows 7 cmd.exe console? By default Ctrl+C seems to only send a signal the next time the input buffer is read, where Ctrl+Break sends a signal immediately. This makes Ctrl+C useless for ending processes because when I want to end a process I want to end it immediately. I'm using Ctrl+Break for now but it's far harder to type. It looks like in DOS you can add BREAK=ON to CONFIG.SYS to achieve this, but not in Windows 7?

• Using a 3g usb dongle as Cisco router access point

  We have an office opening, and we aren't going to have comms into the building when management want the building to open. Our only option (I think) Is to try and hook up a 3/4g dongle to something to act as the access point, and send all the traffic via that. The model of router we use wont support the usb dongle, so we need some sort of 'bridge' My idea was to build a Linux box, plug the dongle into that and then via the Ethernet ports plug the router in. We need the Cisco router in the equation as we create VPN connections over that back to head office. My question is will this work?

I've got a few lingering questions at the moment: What sources (rtc, ntp, etc.) are queried by Windows to keep time? How does this differ in a mixed Active Directory / Novell environment? What is the order that each source is queried in? How does Windows decide whether to act as an NTP client, peer or server? In what situations will Windows update the RTC, if ever?

• Using 4 monitors with 2 generic video cards... possible?

  I'm thinking of setting up 4 monitors in a grid, using two video cards, one card to feed each pair of monitors through the card's two DVI ports. The most important requirement for me is to have the grid of monitors act as one single huge screen. Is this scenario possible by using two generic cards like Radeon 4870s on a Windows 7 computer? (I've heard of Eyefinity, but 4870s don't have it) Another issue is that I only have one PCI-Express slot on my computer's motherboard, therefore I'll need to use one of the lesser PCI cards as the second video card. Will this pose problems?
