• How does Task Parallel Library scale on a terminal server or in a web application?

  I understand that the TPL uses work-stealing queues for its tasks when I execute things like Parallel.For and similar constructs. If I understand this correctly, the construct will spin up a number of tasks, where each will start processing items. If one of the tasks complete their allotted items, it will start stealing items from the other tasks which hasn't yet completed theirs. This solves the problem where items 1-100 are cheap to process and items 101-200 are costly, and one of the two tasks would just sit idle until the other completed. (I know this is a simplified exaplanation.) However, how will this scale on a terminal server or in a web application (assuming we use TPL in code that would run in the web app)? Can we risk saturating the CPUs with tasks just because there are N instances of our application running side by side? Is there any information on this topic that I should read? I've yet to find anything in particular, but that doesn't mean there is none.

• Can I expect a performance gain from removing this JOIN?

  I have a "items" table with 1 million rows and a "users" table with 20,000 rows. When I select from the "items" table I do a join on the "users" table (items.user_id = user.id), so that I can grab the "username" from the users table. I'm considering adding a username column to the items table and removing the join. Can I expect a decent performance increase from this? It's already quite fast, but it would be nice to decrease my load (which is pretty high). The downside is that if the user changes their username, items will still reflect their old username, but this is okay with me if I can expect a decent performance increase. I'm asking stackoverflow because benchmarks aren't telling me too much. Both queries finish very quickly. Regardless, I'm wondering if removing the join would lighten load on the database to any significant degree.

How can I get my custom implementation to exhibit the same behavior as the BCL version? Or, asked another way, since F# has (implicitly) the concept of tuple parameters, curried parameters, and BCL parameters, and I know how to distinguish between curried and tuple-style, how can I force the third style (a la BCL methods)? Let me know if this is unclear.

  This is my scenario I have an view(page) with list of items, a user could select single or multiple items from this page and click on a "Add to Group" button. Then a modal dialog(JQuery dialog) will be shown, from that he could select group, then press the add button. Which causes the items selected in the parent page is added to that particular group. So, which is the best way to pass the selected items to the modal pop-up? Though the query string ? - what happens if the no:of items selected is large, will the url support that much characters Keep the list in the parent page in a javascript variable and return the selected group from the modal pop-up? • Circular dock/menu in css or jquery

  Is it possible to have a circular menu or dock using css or jquery.? I have a set of images as the dock items that need to be displayed as a circular dock... however the number of items in the dock are not constant and may vary.... so i cannot tend to use constant values for positioning each item in a pre-defined manner. Ajax loads some images into this particular div and i need to use css or jquery to style this so that they get displayed as circular dock items. Any idea on how this can be implemented..? I would like a browser in-specific implementation, but i also welcome if some one has some solutions specific to few browsers... UPDATE I don't think i exactly want a pie menu... it easily gets messed up as the number of dock items increase. I am looking for a spiral dock. and by spiral i mean that the menu items must be in the following alignment..

• Algorithm design: can you provide a solution to the multiple knapsack problem?

  I am looking for a pseudo-code solution to what is effectively the Multiple Knapsack Problem (optimisation statement is halfway down the page). I think this problem is NP Complete so the solution doesn't need to be optimal, rather if it is fairly efficient and easily implemented that would be good. The problem is this: I have many work items, with each taking a different (but fixed and known) amount of time to complete. I need to divide these work items into groups so as to have the smallest number of groups (ideally), with each group of work items taking no longer than a given total threshold - say 1 hour. I am flexible about the threshold - it doesnt need to be rigidly applied, though should be close. My idea was to allocate work items into bins where each bin represents 90% of the threshold, 80%, 70% and so on. I could then match items that take 90% to those that take 10%, and so on. Any better ideas?

• Referencing the current jQuery object in a chain?

  At DevDays in SF last year (before jQuery 1.4 was released), I thought they mentioned an upcoming feature in 1.4 that would allow you to reference the current jQuery object while in a chain. I've read through all of the 1.4 improvements and wasn't able to find it. Does anyone know how this can be done? • Jquery Help : Draggable to Sortable and then back to draggable again.

  I have a pool of items in the drag list which is connected to a sortable using connectToSortable option. Now I want to remove some items from this sort list and move them back to the drag list. Sort of like an undo. Suppose the user moves some 5 items to sort list and decides he/she wants only 4 items, and decides to just drag the unwanted item from the sortlist TO the drag list. How do I accomplish this WITHOUT adding a "remove" link in the sort list. Thanks a lot. • Core Data strategy using in memory cache, or no core data at all?

  I have a user interface where the user can check off a bunch of items from a tableview, almost like a todo list. The items are populated from a Core Data stack. I need to be able to take all of the items they're clicking through and put them into a "temporary" shopping cart. Once they're in the shopping cart, users can go through the list and remove the items, or just submit them to a server. The thing is, the selected items are temporary just like an internet based shopping cart. It's nothing something that gets persisted once the application closes. Once the view is no longer in display, I can assume that the shopping cart is safe to discard. What's the best way to approach this? Since the user is essentially clicking on instances that map back to a Core Data entity .. should I setup a different persistence store such as in memory and add that store to my managed object context?

• Creating objects and referencing before saving object to db

  Sorry about the vague title, but i didnt know how to ask the question in one line :) I have an order with nested itemgroups that again have nested items. the user specify the amount of item that he would like to have in each itemgroup. I would like to create these items in the create method of the orders controller when the order itself is being created. I kinda have 2 problems here. First, how do i set the reference of the items, or better yet, put the items into the @order object so they are saved when the @order is saved? the items are being stored in the db as the code is now, but the reference is not set because the order is not stored in the db yet so it doesnt have an id yet. Second, im not sure im using the correct way to get the id from my itemgroup. @order = Order.new(params[:order]) @order.itemgroups.each do |f| f.amount.times do @item = Item.new() @item.itemgroup_id = f.id @item.save end end

  It often happens that a customer provides us with a list of items for which to extract certain information. Imagine, for example, that our clients wish to have the header information of the sales orders only for certain orders. Most likely he will give us a list of items in a column in Excel, or, less probably, a simple text file with the identification code:     As long as the given values ??are at best a dozen, it costs us nothing to copy and paste those values ??in our SSMS and place them in a WHERE clause, using the IN operator, making sure to include the quotes in the case of alphanumeric elements (the database sample is AdventureWorks2008R2): SELECT * FROM Sales.SalesOrderHeader AS SOH WHERE SOH.SalesOrderNumber IN ( 'SO43667' ,'SO43709' ,'SO43726' ,'SO43746' ,'SO43782' ,'SO43796') Clearly, the need to add commas and quotes becomes an hassle when dealing with hundreds of items (which of course has happened to us!). It’d be comfortable to do a simple copy and paste, leaving the items as they are pasted, and make sure the query works fine. We can have this commodity via a User Defined Function, that returns items in a table. Simply we’ll provide the function with an input string parameter containing the pasted items.   A common behavior in business applications that have developed through the ages is for a user to be able to get information or execute commands in relation to some information/function displayed by right clicking the object in question and popping up a context menu that offers relevant options to choose. The Silverlight Toolkit April 2010 release introduced the context menu object.  This can be added to other UI objects and display options for the user to choose.  The menu items can be enabled or disabled as per your application logic and icons can be added to the menu items to add visual effect.  This post will walk you through how to use the context menu object from the Silverlight Toolkit. Steps: 1. Create a new Silverlight 4 application 2. Copy the following namespace definition to the user control object of the MainPage.xaml file: xmlns:my="clr-namespace:System.Windows.Controls;assembly=System.Windows.Controls.Input.Toolkit"   3. Copy the following XAML into the LayoutRoot grid in MainPage.xaml:          <Border CornerRadius="15" Background="Blue" Width="400" Height="100">             <TextBlock Foreground="White" FontSize="20" Text="Context Menu In This Border...."   What pattern should I use for data-access in case of VS2008 generated L2s or EF DataModels? Repository-pattern or what? As we know VS2008 generates Data-Models and DataContexts/ObjectContexts in the same file, then, how should I arrange my VS2008 assemblies in my VS2008 solution to achieve a layered design? If I use repository pattern, how should I arrange my assemblies in the VS2008 solution (as Data-Models and Data/Object-Contexts are stored in the same file...)? Any web/example link would be appreciated.

• WPF: TreeViewItem bound to an ICommand

  Hi All, I am busy creating my first MVVM application in WPF. Basically the problem I am having is that I have a TreeView (System.Windows.Controls.TreeView) which I have placed on my WPF Window, I have decide that I will bind to a ReadOnlyCollection of CommandViewModel items, and these items consist of a DisplayString, Tag and a RelayCommand. Now in the XAML, I have my TreeView and I have successfully bound my ReadOnlyCollection to this. I can view this and everything looks fine in the UI. The issue now is that I need to bind the RelayCommand to the Command of the TreeViewItem, however from what I can see the TreeViewItem doesn't have a Command. Does this force me to do it in the IsSelected property or even in the Code behind TreeView_SelectedItemChanged method or is there a way to do this magically in WPF? This is the code I have: <TreeView BorderBrush="{x:Null}" HorizontalAlignment="Stretch" VerticalAlignment="Stretch"> <TreeView.Items> <TreeViewItem Header="New Commands" ItemsSource="{Binding Commands}" DisplayMemberPath="DisplayName" IsExpanded="True"> </TreeViewItem> </TreeView.Items> and ideally I would love to just go: <TreeView BorderBrush="{x:Null}" HorizontalAlignment="Stretch" VerticalAlignment="Stretch"> <TreeView.Items> <TreeViewItem Header="New Trade" ItemsSource="{Binding Commands}" DisplayMemberPath="DisplayName" IsExpanded="True" Command="{Binding Path=Command}"> </TreeViewItem> </TreeView.Items> Does someone have a solution that allows me to use the RelayCommand infrastructure I have.
