  I wrote three classes for a colleague of mine (I'm new at this job). They compile just fine, but he tells me there are "defects, bugs, and style problems." He wants me to print the files out and mark the problems such as the standard coding conventions, best practices, format, design, and logic. I wrote this code when I was extremely tired and I plan to rewrite it completely. My mistake was showing to it before looking it over myself again. However, he still wants me to do the markings on paper. Any input is greatly appreciated! • Advice about testing an application before release?

  I would like to get some tips from peer developers about how you go about testing an application you developed, prior to release to QA. Keep in mind, this is a small scale application (requirements are verbal), and so doing formal testing processes wont work, especially, since your boss told you to develop this app quick, push it out the door. Despite the time restraints, I would like to make sure it is bug free, however, numerous times in the past, I have had the app sent back to me because clicking the "Reset" button, messes up the other controls alignment etc. I know there are people out there that develop small scale apps fast, and send them out with minimal bugs. • Excel Macro to find text in cell and insert hyperlink on cell

  We're managing some system bugs in a web system and setting priority for execs in a spreadsheet. Each of the tickets has a "FD-" and four numbers as the ID. The web system has a hyperlink that has that "FD-####" at the end of the link. The end result would look like this -- http://www.mytickets.com/FD-#### I'd like to run a macro that finds all the FD-#### and inserts a hyperlink on each. There may be multiple FD-#### in a single cell and there will certainly be other text in there. I'd go through each and add the link but there are over 150 or so. Thanks!

  I want to check User/Password combination on a Windows domain. Right now I do it with the following code: bool Login(String username, String password) { var principalContext = new PrincipalContext(ContextType.Domain); principalContext.ValidateCredentials(username, password); } While it works, the thing that bugs me is that I have to put the password in a String in order to use that API; as I am using a SecureString to store the password everywhere else, I would really like to use some way of checking the username / password combination without having to pass the password as a managed System.String. What would be the best way of achieving that?

I need to implement the filtering system by placing dropdown controls with dynamic values on the headers and then filter the record according to them. • Can I detect unused extra parameters passed to javascript methods?

  In Javascript I can call any method with more than the necessary amount of parameters and the extra parameters are silently ignored. e.g. letters = ['a','b','c'] //correct letters.indexOf('a') //This also works without error or warning letters.indexOf('a', "blah", "ignore me", 38) Are there ways to detect cases where this occurs? My motivation is that in my experience cases where this occurs are usually bugs. Identification of these by code analysis or at runtime would help track these errors down. These cases are especially prevalent where people are expecting alterations to base types which may not have occurred. Logging a warning where this happens e.g. Date.parse('02--12--2012', 'dd--MM--YYYY') Notes: To be clear I would like a solution that doesn't involve me sprinkling checks all over my code and other peoples' code.

• ASP.NET, Visual Studio and Subversion - how to integrate?

  I use AnkhSVN and Visual Studio 2005 and 2008. Now, one thing that bugs me is that Ankh does not really work with ASP.NET sites. I cannot add them properly to a repository and it won't detect changes, especially because the site is on a remote server accessed through Frontpage Extensions (File = Open Site). What are the alternatives? Does a better plug-in exist? Manually downloading the files through FTP and using TortoiseSVN or svn.exe is not really the level of integration I want :) I want to stay within the Visual Studio IDE when possible. Also, I do not control the remote Server, so I can not install anything on it, which means the whole change tracking/comparison to repository has to be done on my machine.

• How to I get raw 'mouse' events with touch screens on Windows Vista/7?

  Does anyone have a clue how to completely disable the touch/tablet 'magic' introduced in Windows Vista? When I follow the steps on http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb969148(VS.85).aspx (both SetProp disable and WM_TABLET_QUERYSYSTEMGESTURESTATUS override) I succeed in stopping windows from treating press-and-hold as a right-click (it correctly gives me a WM_LBUTTONDOWN), but it also gives me a premature WM_LBUTTONUP (before I really let go of the screen). And there is also another problem: a click followed by a drag (down, up, down, move) is treated as a double-click (down, up, down, up, move). These issues occur with two very different touch screens (so it is not a hardware problem), and it never used to happen with Windows XP. This really bugs me. I would much rather have the raw input events like you have for normal mouse clicks. Any ideas?

  I would like to demonstrate how difficult it is for a layman to identify high quality code from flawed code. I'm thinking of doing this with the help of two java methods. Both of the methods should look like they do the same, pretty simple thing. However one of them should have several kind of flaws, for example: iteration with array off by one error string concatenations causing lots of objects to be created (as opposed to StringBuffer in the "good" code, which looks more complicated) possibly null pointer exception (but it should not be trivial to spot) Those are just some examples, all kinds of other issues including bugs and performance related structures are highly appreciated. Methods should be around 10-20 lines of length, and the task they do should be something simple - preferably printing something in an iteration.

Is anyone more experiencing this problem? • Is there a good web-based project management app with scheduling?

  Ideally something as intuitive as basecamp, with good usability and accessibility. The best I've seen is huddle.net but it's still weak in several areas. Must have: Projects - ability to add people & tasks and schedule tasks to people Calendar - showing when people are busy or available Role based access - Admins and non-admins History - ability to look back at all history Anyone seen a product that's worth a look? Clarification: Must be hosted i.e. not require my own hardware or IT staff I'm looking for an app to schedule people with specific tasks at specific times and monitor the outcomes. I'm already using Mingle (for stories), Basecamp (to run the business) and Exceptional (to track bugs). I'm not looking for a bug-tracking system or a story management application (I already looked at VersionOne, but chose Mingle due to it's nicer UI) My response to the answer being auto-selected: I still don't feel the answer (chosen for me) is the correct one. • Xcode File management. What is best practice?

  I've been using Xcode for a while now. One thing that always bugs me is the way it handles files. I like to have my files all in nested folders rather than one big physical folder, but when you create a group in Xcode by default it does not create a folder just a virtual folder within the project. I can see that virtual folders are great for linking code in arbitrary places into your project but once you get beyond a few classes I find the one big folder approach really painful. And then if you try to fix it later it takes ages and is easy to break your build. Is it possible to change this behaviour so that by default it creates a physical folder? Or am I doing it wrong and trying to cling to some other way of working? How do other people work with files in Xcode?

Or why an SNL doesn't inherit from an Array in such a way that you could use map, concat, etc? (BTW if it's just one function you want, you can do something like NodeList.prototype.map = Array.prototype.map;...but again, why is this functionality (intentionally?) blocked in the first place?)

  Hi, One of our client has an old winform application that contains forms with a lot of controls on them. Some of those controls have a deep hierarchy and that make it to hard to select them in the designer. I would need to understand this hierarchy to make modification and correct some bugs, is there a tools, plugin or something to be able to clearly see this hierarchy ? Something like in the aspx source when you have a breadcrumb of where you are in the HTML hierarchy (HTML Body div etc ...) or something more visual maybe ? Any ideas ? PS : we use Visual Studio 2008, .NET 2.0

• Is it safe to develop for older versions of Zend Framework?

  Our vendor-supported server's O/S only supports PHP 5.1.6, which limits us to ZF 1.6. The current version of Zend Framework requires a higher version of PHP. We're struggling to decide whether to adopt ZF because of this incompatibility. Is it feasible to develop (indefinitely) in these older versions of ZF or should we hold off? Features, security, bugs, etc. Is this a path we don't want to go down or are these older versions perfectly usable in a production environment?

  Here's the scenario: A popular open source project is used/loved by many but has become stale due to the fact that the last drop came out nearly a year ago. Many bugs/feature requests/fixes have been logged in the interim and everyone is getting by via downloading the trunk and building custom/private builds with the changes incorporated. The copyright is simple -- there is none and the code is in the public domain. The project owner spins the project as community open source and has set up a sourceforge site, but to date (5 years running now) has yet to accept one contributor. In other words the "community" is a community of one. The project owner takes great pride in the project and has obviously contributed a lot of time/effort but for whatever reason has has seemingly abandoned the project and is unresponsive when offers of help are made. So, the question, should the community fork the codebase, set up a new community site, and take matters in their own hands?

• Using View multiple times in Interface Builder

  I'm using a UITableview and have a custom Cell with some labels. I set up all the constraints in Interface Builder. Now I'm using this Cell multiple times, I just copied it in IB. Now it's the time to change some of these contraints because of some bugs (I'm converting a iPhone App to an Universal). But it can't be right that I now have to set the constraints manually for every cell? How do I do right? If I want to control the constraints in one central place, do I have to set them up in Code?   I am using a "shake" function from github - and it has a detection that is browser-based javascript. //feature detect this.hasDeviceMotion = 'ondevicemotion' in window; This though yields true even on Chrome on OS X. It feels strange, since I am not willing to shake my monitor on my desktop. Safari on OS X gives me "false" in return when testing. I have searched but not been able to find out why Chrome decided to take this path. It bugs me. Is there a better way to make this detection? Not all "mobile devices" has shake as well.. or does not let the browser have that capability, as it does not seem to work in windows phones.

I am looking for a good ldap library on Django, that would allow me to manage my ldap server : adding, modifying, deleting entries for groups, users, and all kind of objects The library django-ldapdb looked promising, it offers a Model base class that can be used to declare ldap objects in a Django fashion (which is what we ideally want), however we've had some bugs with it, and furthermore it seems like it is not maintained any more. • How to make this very long url appear short?

  I have made most my site SE friendly, but one part of my site bugs me... I have a HUGE form in one of the pages, and when submitting the form (action=php_page) URL is so long it covers half a word document in one line with all the passing variables... This is very ugly... Is there any way to make this long URL appear short? Or some other solution you know of? Let me know if you need more input... Thanks
