• Why an empty MAIL FROM address can sent out email?

  We are using Smarter Mail system. Recently, we found that hacker had hacked some user accounts and sent out lots of spams. We have firewall to ratelimit the sender, but for the following email, the firewall couldn't do this because of the empty FROM address. Why an empty FROM address is consider OK? Actually, in our MTA(surgemail), we can see the sender in the email header. Any idea? • Why does PSEXEC work if I don't specify a password?

  When I run PSEXEC to launch a process on a remote machine, if I specify the password in the command line it fails with: PsExec could not start cmd.exe on web1928: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. psexec \\web1928 -u remoteexec -p mypassword "cmd.exe" If I just specify: psexec \\web1928 -u remoteexec "cmd.exe" and type in the password it works just fine. The originating server is Windows 2003 and the remote server is Windows 2008 SP2.

• Added and removed a custom service, but the keybinding is still stuck?

  I created a custom service in Automator to open a new finder window from whatever app I'm in, and assigned it to CMD+E (I was trying to get the WIN+E effect from Windows.) I tried it for a few days, restarted the computer daily, but found it didn't work that well. So I removed the keybinding, then removed the service, deleted the Automator file, etc. So, now the custom service is gone, but CMD+E still goes to the finder from whatever app I'm in! I added a custom shortcut to BBEdit in an attempt to restore its CMD+E action (find with selection), but it STILL goes to the finder! I just want CMD+E to do what it normally does in each app. Any ideas?

• PsExec and Remote Environment Variables, Logging, Etc.

  When I run PsExec on a remote computer, I always fall short of what I want. What I would like ideally in most situations is a) a log on an admin server where each individual log has the name of each the remote computer it was generated from (e.g. COMPNAME1.log, COMPNAME2.log, etc.) or b) a log file on each remote computer with whatever name I specify. When I try scenario (a), I use the following command. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username cmd /c echo TEST >> \\server.company.tld\share\%computername%.log Problem is that it never works. All the computers just write to the log where %computername% is just the computer I execute PsExec from in my office. What I want are unique logs for each computer specific in the listofcomputers.txt that will correctly use the hostname from the remote environment variable without issue. Is that even possible? It does not seem to work for me. I tried this, and the syntax is clearly wrong. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username "cmd /c echo TEST >> \\server.company.tld\share\%computername%.log" PsExec just fails saying the system file cannot be found (read: syntax fail). As for scenario (b), it appears to be a variation of a similar problem. When I run a command like this, it does not work. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username "cmd /c echo %computername% >> \\server.company.tld\share\aggregated.log" Is there something I do not understand about remote path and environment variables with PsExec on the cmd.exe console (I have not even tried the dreaded PowerShell yet). I know such things work in a batch file (cmd /c \\server.company.tld\share\runthis.bat), but is there a reason it will not work when executing commands as arguments? I always need this, and can never get it!

While "myapp.exe /A" is running, I want to prevent another instance of it from starting. However, I still want "myapp.exe /B" to be able to run (again, though only one instance of it at a time). How can I set this up?

I'd like c:\folder\subfolder to link to \fileserver\realSubfolder This works perfectly fine under Windows 7 (using mklink.exe) but I can't get this to work under Windows Server 2003.   Hi, I need to schedule a task in Windows Server 2003 that executes this script that deletes files older that n days in the specified folder. The script needs 3 parameters: %1 path to folder where files need to be deleted %2 file names (es. *.log) %3 number of days @echo off forfiles -p %1 -s -m %2 -d -%3 -c "cmd /c del /q @path" The script works fine if the first parameter has no spaces inside.   I have added, via the registry, a right click menu option for all filetypes which is supposed to get the MD5 checksum for a file. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT*\shell\Checksum - Default: Get Checksum and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT*\shell\Checksum\command - Default: checksum.cmd "%1" checksum.cmd simply clears the screen, calls fciv.exe using %1 and then pauses. Unfortunately, whilst the option "Get Checksum" appears correctly in the right click menu, it doesn't perform the right action when clicked. When I click it an "Open With" dialog opens, which is of course not what I want. Both checksum.cmd and fciv.exe are in the PATH. checksum.cmd: @echo off cls fciv.exe %1 pause Anybody know what's going on?

• Switching efficiently between windows, not apps, in OS X

  Previous questions have asked "how can I efficiently switch between windows, not applications, in OS X"? (Switching windows on OS X, Switch between windows on Mac OS X? and others). The most recommended suggestions seem to be: Use some combo of cmd-tab and cmd-~. Use Expose, and possibly Spaces Use Witch I spent the money on Witch, and have been using it for a few weeks; it's ok, but it is sometimes slow to respond, sometimes buggy on window order, crashes my system if I disable and re-enable it too many times, and doesn't work properly with X11 apps. The built-in cmd-tab and cmd-~ are ok, but still bring an entire application to the forefront. I find a very common workflow I use is to bounce back and forth between two windows (for example, a browser window and a Thunderbird email in progress), when both apps (the browser and email software) have multiple windows open. I can use Cmd-Tab to get back and forth between apps, but whenever I switch to an app, ALL windows from that app pop up. That suddenly fills my screen with irrelevant data and windows, and often drops those other windows in front of the single window from the other app that I was using and would conveniently like to keep viewing even though it isn't in focus. Expose seems to be the preferred "OS X natural way," but I can't seem to get myself to use it efficiently. I hit F9, and see 10 windows; I then need to squint, try to find the window I want, then use the mouse or the cursor keys to navigate to the one I want. Given the number of power users who say they use Expose, I must be missing the boat here. My goal is not to make this a repeat of previous questions. I'm not asking "what are my alternatives?" (unless I've missed one above!) Rather, I'm asking: what are you, OS X power users, actually doing to handle the use case I described above? Another common use case for me is having multiple Excel spreadsheets open and multiple browser windows open, and I'm rapidly switching back and forth between one spreadsheet in particular and one browser window. Every time I Cmd-Tab, all spreadsheets or all browser windows appear: I don't want to see the ones I'm not working with, and they tend to hide the windows from the alternative app that I don't have in focus but I'd like to at least eyeball. Can you describe what your workflow is like, and how you rapidly and thoughtlessly switch between windows from apps that have multiple windows open?

• Is there a win32 command line tabifier that supports ... `read details` (revised)?

  I use an editor that allows me to type in a command to run. In order to see the output without having to redirect it to a file, I precede the command with "cmd /k," which leaves an open cmd.exe window. So I'd like to find a way to catch the call to cmd.exe and pass it onto an application that tabifies cmd.exe, a terminal emulator as it's called. The desired result would be similar to what happens in a tabbed editor, when that editor is to open some file, it does so in another tab, and not in another window. While in a given situation it may be easier to modify the command to redirect output to display in the editor itself, in general it would be more helpful if I could find a way to catch all such calls into one window.

• Slow dvd burning/reading speeds: how to solve

  I have a problem on which I'm struggling since i started using linux a year ago on my desktop, but still haven't found a solution for it. When reading or burning a dvd, the speeds are very slow (mostly under 1x) whilst I did selected the fastest speed in k3b. As such, it takes up to 40-50 minutes to burn one dvd! I read about enabling dma this post but it didn't help. • What is appropriate way for managing MySQL connection through C#

  My question, at the bottom line, is what is the appropriate(best) way to manage our connection towards MySQL db with C#. Well, currently I'm working on some C# (winforms type) <- MySQL application and I've been looking at Server Connections in MySQL Administrator, been witness of execution of my mysql_queries, connection opens an closes, ... an so on! In my C# code I'm working like this and this is an example: public void InsertInto(string qs_insert) { try { conn = new MySqlConnection(cs); conn.Open(); cmd = new MySqlCommand(); cmd.Connection = conn; cmd.CommandText = qs_insert; cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); } catch (MySqlException ex) { MessageBox.Show(ex.ToString()); } finally { if (conn != null) { conn.Close(); } } } Meaning, every time I want to insert something in db table I call this table and pass insert query string to this method. Connection is established, opened, query executed, connection closed. So, we could conclude that this is the way I manage MySQL connection. For me and my point of view, currently, this works and its enough for my requirements. Well, you have Java & Hibernate, C# & Entity Framework and I'm doing this :-/ and it's confusing me. Should I use MySQL with Entity Framework? What is the best way for collaboration between C# and MySQL? I don't want to worry about is connection that I've opened closed, can that same connection be faster, ...

• Vista/7 UAC: how to lower process privileges

  Hi all, Is it possible for a process to lower itself from elevated UAC permission back to standard user? If not can the elevated process launch its copy with standard user token and then kill itself? Any code examples (C# preferred)? Details: Problem: - user installs my product (written in C#) - the installer elevates its UAC permission to admin - at the end the installer launches my exe - the exe inherits elevated permissions from admin - the exe mounts network drives which become invisible in Windows Explorer (that runs with regular permissions) Options I considered: 1) break installer into outer exe and inner exe, that runs with elevated permission. The install consists of 1000+ lines of NSIS code and I don't know anything about NSIS 2) mounting drives with lower permissions. If I do it Win Explorer can see the drives but my exe cannot 3) setting EnableLinkedConnection registry option to 1. This is a no-go because it requires PC reboot during the installation.
