• Progressing past CRUD applications in PHP?

  I've been programming in PHP for about a year and am at the following stage: Have a good 'feel' for the language Can create CRUD applications competently Can utilize an MVC structure to allow for future expansion of code Using the points listed above, I've created a number of my own applications for practise - including but not limited to; a forum, social network etc. My question may be a little vague but should hopefully be answerable. I feel as though there isn't anything else I would need to know about PHP to allow me to create websites, though I'm sure I'm wrong. What advanced/complex PHP topics could I look at that have a real-world use and will allow me to enhance both my skill as a programmer and applications in general? Recently I've looked a lot more at javascript/jQuery allowing me to give my applications a richer user interface which has been a great learning experience and proving very useful.

After the a while I started thinking it really hard, and if you go really in depth this is a very complex and interesting question to ask. YOu can even ask yourself if (heavy) internet (social) users are an subculture and programmers a culture within. I think it might be an interesting discussion, hope you like it! NOTE: I linked the wiki article because it might be a good baseline, maybe you can base you answer on Ken Gelder´s proposal to distinguish subcultures. • Is there a way to continue a partially finished MinGW build?

  I am just trying to become familiar with MinGW (and with more complex command-line compiler tools) I have a really giant project to build, I successfully managed to generate the makefile with CMake, and started mingw. After more than an hour of hard work, and building dozens of libraries successfully, the build ended in an error. It seems I added an option in CMake which is not supported in my system. My problem is, I cannot figure out a way to just skip that library and continue with the build process. If I remove the option in CMake and start mingw again, it starts from the beginning and rebuilds everything, even those libraries which are already built.

• Didn't you have problems with upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 (libre office)?

  This is the first time I'm repporting something hoping that it can be usefull for you. When updating from 11.010 to 12.04 (what include updating Libre office I supose), I can't any more work with any document that was originally made in Libre office. Every change freezes the screen, I can't save anything... I'm talking of complex documents, with lots of internal references and footnotes and some propor text styles of about 230 pages (phd work) I wanted to alert you that probabely something is wrong but as I don't have any tecnical knowledge, I don't know what could be usefull to help you in your great job of making good free software. My little desktop has 2Gb of Ram memory and an atom processor (I can look for more details if that would be usefull to you)

• Data-driven animations

  Say you are using C/SDL for a 2D game project. It's often the case that people use a structure to represent a frame in an animation. The struct consists of an image and how much time the frame is supposed to be visible. Is this data sufficient to represent somewhat complex animation? Is it a good idea to separate animation management code and animation data? Can somebody provide a link to animations tutorials that store animations in a file and retrieve them when needed. I read this in a book (AI game programming wisdom) but would like to see a real implementation.

  I learned PHP to make websites. After some years I've started using programming for solving what is difficult tasks for my level. Now I want to make a program that solves equations. (I want to write it myself, not use an API. Because I'm doing this for the sake of the challenge, not for the result..) Because of this, I'm going to learn a new and faster/better language. • Can a domain specific language be used to representing the Open SRD

  I am in the early stages of creating an open source C# library that would allow developers to drop in the open SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/) into an existing project. Abstracted it is a complex set of tightly coupled business rules. Having previously worked on an adaptive object model project for health care risk management I began with that pattern in mind. Due to the high coupling of rules it is becoming apparent that the project may require some kind of scripting. Have started researching DSL implementation I am now considering scraping the adaptive object model for a domain specific language. I have not work with domain specific languages so my question is it reasonable to assume a domain specific language can be used to representing the open SRD?

• How to morph from a programmer noob to a guru?

  I have been a programmer for two years, and i am getting hard to level up my skill especially working at legacy code maintenance right now. I think working hard is not enough to elevate my skill, because there are ton of opensource around us, the preoject i have been involved are all mixture of opensources --- from front end to back end from presentation tier to business logic tier. My work is just gluing all these together or something fewer complex which is to collect data from UI to logic module then retrieve the data processed and put it to UI. Sometime there is a need to add some simple logic(like assembling the data to a form that fit business logic interface) while transport data.   I want to tackle some basic 3-D collision detection and was wondering how engines handle this and give you a pretty interface and make it so easy ... I want to do it all myself, however. 2-D collision detection is extremely simple and can be done multiple ways that even beginner programmers could think up: 1.When the pixels touch; 2.when a rectangle range is exceeded; 3.when a pixel object is detected near another one in a pixel-based rendering engine. But 3-D is different with one dimension, but complex in many more so ... what are the general, basic understanding/examples on how 3-D collision detection can be implemented? Think two shaded, OpenGL cubes that are moved next to each other with a simple OpenGL rendering context and keyboard events.

  Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment.   I'm sole developer of a complex critical software system, written in Visual C++ 2005. It's deployed on a classical Microsoft cluster scenario (active/passive), that has Windows Server 2003 R2. If a server A goes down, the other one (B) starts and take the ownership of its duties. You have to know that: Both servers have the same Microsoft patches/fixes, same hardware, same everything. Both servers use the same memory storage (a RAID-6 through fiber channel). This software has a main module that launches the peripheral modules. if a peripheral module crashes, the main module restarts it. When I switch the application in one of the two servers (let's say the B server) two of the peripheral modules of the main applications just started to crash apparently without reason about 2 seconds after the start of the peripheral module. What could I do to analyze/inspect/resolve this weird situation?

  I'm currently working at a quite big Android project (a social network, you can see it here if is useful to answer the question). We decided to restyle the whole app, changing all the UI design. The code I actually have is complex, there are many controllers, and it's a little messy too. Is it "better" in terms of time and code cleanliness to take one controller per time, and rewrite it entirely, or to modify one controller per time? The layout change entirely anyway, so for that I know I've to restart from scratch. Maybe it could seem a stupid question, but with the "time" variable I really can't see the best way.

• Scalability of multi-threading in game server

  What is a reasonable number of threads for a simple 2D mmo in Java? Is it reasonable to have two threads per connection, one for the input stream and one for the output stream? The reason I ask is because I use a blocking method on the input stream, and a workaround seems unnecessarily complex if I were to try to get around it without adding threads. This is mostly for my own edification; I don't expect to have 5 million people playing it ever, or even 5, but I'm wondering what a good scalable solution is, and if this is reasonable for a small server (<30 connections).

• How can I stay focused and motivated on a project?

  I'm working on starting my own software development business, but I've noticed that I have major issues getting projects out by their deadlines, and in general getting them out of the "almost-done" stage. I feel my problem is that I like complex programming too much, and I end up rewriting code to make it cleaner/more efficient/less error prone as a means of putting off more "boring" development. I end up with polished applications at the end, but I spend twice as long on the project as I should have. If I ever want my company to succeed, I need to work on staying focused on what actually needs to be done, so the question is: What techniques do you use to keep yourself focused and motivated on a project, in your career?

• CPU spikes cause audio stuttering in Audacious when browsing? (Lubuntu)

  My default audio player is Audacious, browser Google Chrome. I tried Firefox, and while I love it, the CPU load spikes when doing something as simple and small and switching a tab, which causes the audio playing to stutter (as sound is onboard and handled thru the CPU). Chrome doesn't do this as much, but there is the occasional stuttering when browsing, which is ridiculous, as not even Windows Vista does this. So I thought maybe it's something to do with how Lubuntu handles sound, I checked and only ALSA was installed. I tried installing PulseAudio, but, while the music "plays", nothing comes through the speakers. Immediately after switching back to ALSA the music pours out of them. So I was wondering if you had any idea what was going on here. I asked on Ubuntu Forums but apparently my problem is too complex, as it's been over a week since the last reply. Specs are: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2GHz 2GB Corsair 667MHz DDR2 RAM ATi HD Radeon 3650 (AGP) 512MB 500W Cooler Master PSU 80GB SATA II HDD (Vista is installed on 500GB drive) Biostar K8M800 Motherboard

I have been using a lot of different languages, including C++ by now, and I can only say that I really like it. I'm far more horrified by Delphi than by C++. Actually, I find it's an almost perfect, compiled language! I've been doing a lot of different projects in C++ as well, ranging from 3D video games to webservers and emulators for old video game consoles. And I still do not see the problem everyone else seems to have with it! It was hard for me to get into it of course, as it is quite complex and has a lot of depth, but after that it's simply great.

• Print all values in a value object

  I have to debug an issue which requires me to print all the values of a Value Object that is returned by a web service call. The Value object is a complex object in the sense, it has another object as its member which in turn has another object. Printing all the values by using get methods is cumbersome. So was wondering if there is a way to break down the value object by any way to get to a primitive level like String or int or Date and print them all using one API? I had a look at the below question but my prob is that i don't have access to the source code of the value object. • Facing quality issues

  A workforce management software has complex GUI (for example values in a page depends on the status (closed or open) of other pages). Only latest and near past development has test coverage. During our last release, we received lots of bugs from customer in-spite of 2 weeks of testing Sprint . We don't have dedicated test team. The developers does the unit test & User acceptance test. Every day triggers automated regression test. I am afraid the developers are not testing the entire workflow because its time consuming also not able to automate it because of its complexity. Any suggestions ?. The legacy code (15 yrs development) has less code coverage. How can I improve quality ? Note: Now not possible to hire testers to have independent test team!!

• Can it be a good idea to create a new table for each client of a webapp?

  This is semi-hypothetical, and as I've no experience in dealing with massive database tables, I have no idea if this is horrible for some reason. On to the situation: Imagine a web based application - lets say accounting software - which has 20,000 clients and each client has 1000+ entries in a table. That's 20 million rows which I know can certainly slow down complex queries. In a case like this, does it make more sense to create a new table in the database for each client? How do databases react to having 20k (or more!) tables?
