  • Writing jenkins plugin: where is the documentation?

    On my current project we're using Jenkins to monitor our builds. Now they want me to write a Jenkins plugin to add some more monitoring parameters. I've taken a look at how the status monitor plugin works, and I can't figure some things out. I've tried to look for documentation for writing a plugin, but that seems to be sorely lacking. (the site only mentions how to generate the base project, and refers to a tutorial that's not that informative) What I'm trying to do is just add some options to each build, add a link, and a monitoring page. Adding to the main page is apparently done by adding the action, but I'm still trying to figure out the rest. And how it all ties in. Does anyone have any pointers, or a place where I can find some decent documentation?

  • LightView: JavaFX 2 real-time visualizer for GlassFish

    Adam Bien launched LightFish, a light-weight monitoring and visualization application for GlassFish. It comes with a introduction and a screencast to get you started. The tool provides monitoring information about threads and memory (such as heap size, thread count, peak thread count), transactions (commits and rollbacks), HTTP sessions, JDBC sessions, and even "paranormal activity". In a recently released first part of a tri-part article series at OTN, Adam explains how REST services can be exposed as bindable set of properties for JavaFX. The article titled "Enterprise side of JavaFX" shows how a practical combination of REST and JavaFX together. It explains how read-only and dynamic properties can be created.   • Huge surge in direct traffic from one particular town

    Last month I noticed that the direct visits on our site have increased by nearly 150% whilst bounce rate is also considerably up. After drilling down further I can see that we have had nearly 2000 direct visits from one town in Connecticut called Stamford, with a bounce rate of 100%! I have been scratching around for answers but I can only find that it may be to do with our uptime monitoring tool; Pingdom. Does anyone know/have any experience with this kind of issue, any help is appreciated I have just noticed that we are receiving identical traffic in a town in England and a town in Scotland... This definitely makes me think it's to do with our uptime monitoring tool.

  • How can I filter /var/adm/wtmpx on Solaris 10?

    Some of our Solaris 10 servers are monitored using SiteScope, which uses Telnet to probe certain ports (SSH is one of them) every few minutes. This is creating an insane amount of lines in /var/adm/wtmpx, and eventually make it so big (2,5G+) that we can no longer run the last command, or that the uptime command is unable to accurately show the true uptime of the server. The error we get when trying to run the last command is this: /var/adm/wtmpx: Value too large for defined data type I have found ways we can clean this accounting log using a cron job (with the command /usr/lib/acct/fwtmp), and this works. This is not the issue. I was wondering if there would be a way to simply prevent connections from the monitoring user (in our case, user monsite) from creating entries in this accounting log at all. Is this possible, and if so, how can I do it? I've looked around and searched Google for a while, but couldn't find an answer to this question. NOTE: We are very well aware that the monitoring solution we employ is perhaps not the best one, but we cannot change it at this time. Therefore, suggesting that we change it is not pertinent to this question.   • How to set up Zabbix to monitor SQL Server Failover Active-Passive Cluster?

    It should be simple, so it is just most likely my approach being totally off and someone will hopefully prod me into the right direction. We have a Zabbix 2.0.3 server instance set up monitoring a bunch of different servers, but now we need to set it up to monitor and notify any alerts in regards to the SQL Server 2008 R2 Failover Active-Passive cluster. Essentially, this is a 2 servers cluster, when only one of its nodes can be "active" at a given time, serving all SQL Server related requests, while the other server just "sleeps" and from the point of anyone logged on on that server - has all of the SQL Server related services in stopped state. We have tried setting up Zabbix agents on both servers, using SQL Server 2005 templates (we could not find any 2008 specific ones and the 2005 ones always seemed to be working just fine for monitoring 2008 R2 instances) and configuring Zabbix server for both of the servers, but we end up having constant alerts for the server being currently the passive one in the cluster. We have been able to look up various methods of actually monitoring the failover, but we have not been able to find any guidance in regards to how to instruct Zabbix, that in this particular case, only one of the servers in the group is expected to be in the online state, while the other can be just discarded and should not raise any alerts. I hope I made myself clear. Thanks for any guidance. I am out of ideas.

  • Firewall for internal networks

    I have a virtualised infrastructure here, with separated networks (some physically, some just by VLAN) for iSCSI traffic, VMware management traffic, production traffic, etc. The recommendations are of course to not allow access from the LAN to the iSCSI network for example, for obvious security and performance reasons, and same between DMZ/LAN, etc. The problem I have is that in reality, some services do need access across the networks from time to time: System monitoring server needs to see the ESX hosts and the SAN for SNMP VSphere guest console access needs direct access to the ESX host the VM is running on VMware Converter wants access to the ESX host the VM will be created on The SAN email notification system wants access to our mail server Rather than wildly opening up the entire network, I'd like to place a firewall spanning these networks, so I can allow just the access required For example: SAN SMTP Server for email Management SAN for monitoring via SNMP Management ESX for monitoring via SNMP Target Server ESX for VMConverter Can someone recommend a free firewall that will allow this kind of thing without too much low-level tinkering of config files? I've used products such as IPcop before, and it seems to be possible to achieve this using that product if I re-purpose their ideas of "WAN", "WLAN" (the red/green/orange/blue interfaces), but was wondering if there were any other accepted products for this sort of thing.   • Should an HA failover occur in this scenario?

    I'm running vSphere 5 in an HA cluster across two hosts (vsphereA and vsphereB). I have the HA cluster configured for host monitoring and datastore heartbeat monitoring with admission control disabled (hopefully I rightfully understand that datastore heartbeat monitoring prevents inadvertent and unwanted HA failovers due to management network isolation). Each host has a single connection to a dedicated iSCSI network and iSCSI target (no MPIO). All vmdk's for all VM's exist on the iSCSI datastore. As a test of HA I disconnected the iSCSI connection on vsphereB and was surprised to see that the running VM's on vsphereB continued to run on vsphereB. The powered off VM's were showing as inaccessible (which I expected due to the fact that they weren't running and the connection from vsphereB to the iSCSI target was severed) but the running VM's continued to run and continued to be "owned" by vsphereB. I expected to see an HA failover occur for those VM's and expected to see them "owned" by vsphereA after the HA failover (which didn't occur). I'm at a loss to understand why an HA failover didn't occur for those VM's. Am I misunderstanding in which cases an HA failover should occur?

  • cleaning up noise in an edge detection algoritum

    I recently wrote an extremely basic edge detection algorithm that works on an array of chars. The program was meant to detect the edges of blobs of a single particular value on the array and worked by simply looking left, right, up and down on the array element and checking if one of those values is not the same as the value it was currently looking at. The goal was not to produce a mathematical line but rather a set of ordered points that represented a descritized closed loop edge. The algorithm works perfectly fine, except that my data contained a bit of noise hence would randomly produce edges where there should be no edges. This in turn wreaked havoc on some of my other programs down the line. There is two types of noise that the data contains. The first type is fairly sparse and somewhat random. The second type is a semi continuous straight line on the x=y axis. I know the source of the first type of noise, its a feature of the data and there is nothing i can do about it. As for the second type, i know it's my program's fault for causing it...though i haven't a hot clue exactly what is causing it. My question is: How should I go about removing the noise completely? I know that the correct data has points that are always beside each other and is very compact and ordered (with no gaps) and is a closed loop or multiple loops. The first type of noise is usually sparse and random, that could be easily taken care of by checking if any edges is next that noise point is also counted as an edge. If not, then the point is most defiantly noise and should be removed. However, the second type of noise, where we have a semi continuous line about x=y poses more of a problem. The line is sometimes continuous for random lengths (the longest was it went half way across my entire array unbroken). It is even possible for it to intersect the actual edge. Any ideas on how to do this?

  • can a OOM be caused by not finding enough contiguous memory?

    I start some java code with -Xmx1024m, and at some point I get an hprof due to OOM. The hprof shows just 320mb, and give me a stack trace: at java.util.Arrays.copyOfRange([CII)[C (Arrays.java:3209) at java.lang.String.<init>([CII)V (String.java:215) at java.lang.StringBuilder.toString()Ljava/lang/String; (StringBuilder.java:430) ... This comes from a large string I am copying. I remember reading somewhere (cannot find where) what happened is these cases is: process still has not consumed 1gb of memory, is way below even if heap still below 1gb, it needs some amount of memory, and for copyOfRange() it has to be continuous memory, so even if it is not over the limit yet, it cannot find a large enough piece of memory on the host, it fails with an OOM. I have tried to look for doc on this (copyOfRange() needs a block of continuous memory), but could not find any. The other possible culprit would be not enough permgen memory. Can someone confirm or refute the continuous memory hypothesis? Any pointer to some doc would help too.

  • Dimension Reduction in Categorical Data with missing values

    I have a regression model in which the dependent variable is continuous but ninety percent of the independent variables are categorical(both ordered and unordered) and around thirty percent of the records have missing values(to make matters worse they are missing randomly without any pattern, that is, more that forty five percent of the data hava at least one missing value). There is no a priori theory to choose the specification of the model so one of the key tasks is dimension reduction before running the regression. While I am aware of several methods for dimension reduction for continuous variables I am not aware of a similar statical literature for categorical data (except, perhaps, as a part of correspondence analysis which is basically a variation of principal component analysis on frequency table). Let me also add that the dataset is of moderate size 500000 observations with 200 variables. I have two questions. Is there a good statistical reference out there for dimension reduction for categorical data along with robust imputation (I think the first issue is imputation and then dimension reduction)? This is linked to implementation of above problem. I have used R extensively earlier and tend to use transcan and impute function heavily for continuous variables and use a variation of tree method to impute categorical values. I have a working knowledge of Python so if something is nice out there for this purpose then I will use it. Any implementation pointers in python or R will be of great help. Thank you.

    Can anyone shed some light on what's causing this timeout error on Heroku (at 2012-07-08T08:58:33+00:00)? The docs say that it's because of some long running process. I've set config.assets.initialize_on_precompile = false in config/application.rb.   • What response should be made to a continued web-app crack attempt?

    I've issues with a continuous, concerted cracking attempt on a website (coded in php). The main problem is sql-injection attempts, running on a Debian server. A secondary effect of the problem is being spidered or repeatedly spammed with urls that, though a security hole has been closed, are still obviously related attempts to crack the site, and continue to add load to the site, and thus should be blocked. So what measures can I take to: A: Block known intruders/known attack machines (notably making themselves anonymous via botnet or relaying servers) to prevent their repeated, continuous, timed access from affecting the load of the site, and B: report & respond to the attack (I'm aware that the reporting to law enforcement is almost certainly futile, as may be reporting to the ip/machine where the attacks are originating, but other responses to take would be welcome).

  • Replicate a big, dense Windows volume over a WAN -- too big for DFS-R

    I've got a server with a LOT of small files -- many millions files, and over 1.5 TB of data. I need a decent backup strategy. Any filesystem-based backup takes too long -- just enumerating which files need to be copied takes a day. Acronis can do a disk image in 24 hours, but fails when it tries to do a differential backup the next day. DFS-R won't replicate a volume with this many files. I'm starting to look at Double Take, which seems to be able to do continuous replication. Are there other solutions that can do continuous replication at a block or sector level -- not file-by-file over a WAN?
