  • setting up freedns with an existing domain

    I've been running a webserver off of a pc at a static IP succesfully for the past 5 months. recently however, I've moved into another appartment and my ISP only provides a dynamic IP (my IP changes from time to time). I'm not an internet genius but I was thinking to fix this by using a Dynamic DNS provider. So I got on the web and found freedns. I'm a bit confused about how to set up everything though. I've managed to succesfully install the IP updater daemon on my web server. Then, in my registrars control panel, I set the NS records to point at ns1 through ns4.afraid.org (removing the old NS records). I'm not certain what I should do with the A records though (for now they are still pointing to the old static IP address). I have A records for www, blog, irc, etc. but I cannot point them at my new IP address, because it isn't Could someone explain this in the clearest possible sense (perhaps elaborating on what happens at each step of the DNS process). I never really knew what the A records are for anyway. (note that I haven't really found any documentation at the freedns website, or on google)

    I made a website which stayed online for 6 months. During that period the search results for the site were not at all good. Even typing the domain name yielded just two or three category result. Now, I have taken the site down for total redevelopment and redesign. The aim of this question is to know the basics for SEO to be done while redesigning the site. My site will be in ASP.NET MVC 3 and will have main categories, sub categories and sub-sub if any. Then there will be products in those categories. All the data will come from MSSQL DB. Please tell me just the basics required for a dynamic website during development. I want to ensure that google and other engines index all the pages of my site including products or whatever.

  • Hosting a website from a dynamic IP

    I recently upgraded my internet to the point that it is much faster and more reliable than my current webhost. I would like to move my current domain to be hosted at home, but my IP address is dynamic. As far as I know, I only get a new IP when I restart my modem and or router (which is almost never) or when cable one (my ISP) pushes out a firmware update (rarely). There are a few ways I can see doing this 1) convince my ISP to give me a static IP 2) assign my router my current IP to force a static IP (which might work?) 3) set my dns record to my current IP address and update it on the rare occasions that it changes. Obviously I'm hoping that the first one works, but I don't want to pay a lot of extra money (if that's what it takes) to get a static IP address. Has anyone had any luck with something like that?

    I am developing a forum for a research project, i am using Vanilla forum (though i am not tied to this yet). Another feature of this site will be a personal journal/diary/blog. Only the user and administrators will have access to the journal. The journal does not need any advanced features. Does anybody have any suggestions on software/script that could easily be integrated with Vanilla forum for this purpose? My first thought was using Wordpress but it is a bit to complex to adminstrate as the site is meant to be simple. And i dont really see how it can be intregrated easily the way i want it.

    What is the best way to allow for dynamic fields/database columns? For example, let's say we have a payroll system that allows a user to create unique salary structures for each employee. How could/should one handle this scenario? I thought of using a "salary" table that hold the salary component fields and joining these columns to a "salary_values" table that hold the actual values.   • Transparent PHP script execution using mod_rewrite

    I am looking for a solution for this a problem: I need that every HTTP request (method is irrelevant) in Apache http server would be served only after execution of specific PHP script. This is needed because I need to gather some information about requests, etc. As far as I understand - this could be achieved using mod_rewrite module. So far I have done this (in .htaccess file): RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^(.*)$ script.php [C] script.php is executed, but I need that after this original request would be executed.     Hi all, Is it possible to hide a dynamic query from the result sets provided from a Stored Procedure? I am using the @@rowcount of the dynamic query to set a variable that is used to determine whether another query runs or not. The other query is used by code that I cannot change - hence why I am changing the Stored Procedure. The dynamic query returns as the first result set from the Stored Procedure is now the result of the dynamic query which currently is "breaking" the calling code. Thanks in advance

I am saying this because when I talked with my teacher, he said that major sites use many languages combined. And he said that a site shouldn't be designed only in PHP.   • What do you call the concept of dynamic data definition?

    Maybe this is simpler and more straightforward then what I'm thinking but I can't seem to find this concept on google anywhere. The concept is this: You have a table in a database and the table has a specified number of columns. However, it has been asked of me by previous clients that there also be a set of dynamic user defined columns that can be added on the fly. What is this concept called and is it considered a design pattern?
