  Hey there, a friend of mine gave me a printer/scanner because he could not print with it anymore. the point is this thing has been lying in the cellar for quite some time now and the cables are missing. that is the power cable for my power plug ( there are foreign ones included) and more importantly the connection to the computer. I have googled around for a bit and tried to get to a hotline,but my problem is : Where can i get those cables from? Can anyne help me get a clue where to find those, where to ask for something like this? cheers

• Why won't my computer turn off?

  I have recently replaced my old Corsair TX650M PSU with a new CoolerMaster Silent Pro Gold 800w PSU. With the old PSU when I turned off my computer from windows it would shut down and everything would turn off. The lights would turn off and the fans would stop turning. With my new power supply when I shut down windows It shows the usual shutting down dialog then my two monitors say "no signal" and turn off. The weird part however is that the lights stay on and the fans continue spinning forever until I manually hold the power button in for 4 seconds then finally everything shuts off. How can I emulate the previous behavior?

• Computer won't stay powered up

  I have just tried to turn my PC on this morning and it won't stay powered up. It will come on as normal for about 5 seconds, not quite long enough for the monitor to wake up. Then it will power off. After about 2 seconds it will start again, it will continue like this until I pull out the plug. Plugging it in again doesn't restart the cycle although pressing the power button does. I have tried to clear the cmos but beyond that I have no ideas. It was working perfectly when I put it in hibernate last night. NOTE: I am using a Dell Optiplex 755 UPDATE 1: I took out the motherboard battery and it almost came on then it displays the message Error loading Operating System UPDATE 2: After taking out the custom video card, it says "No hard drive present"

• No SATA drives after PSU Upgrade

  I know this sounds a lot like this but I just confirmed that my MBR is fine as well as the SSD drive in question. What happened: I upgraded my be-quiet 700w PSU to the 1000w dark power pro. When I tried booting the system and none of the drives (all SATA) were detected, resulting in the "Boot device failure" error. After that I unplugged all but the boot drive, triple checked that all cables were in fact nice and tight inside their sockets, replaced both e-SATA and power cables ; still with the same outcome. Finally I reconnected my old PSU and sure enough the PC booted without any hassle (except of course for the direful construction that is currently occupying my desk). Does anybody have any advice on how to proceed? Surely, it is possible the PSU is faulty but are there other explanations?   i have written following code, which should work with my logic, but it does not. I should check if given term is power of two. For example s(s(s(nul))) should return false, s(s(s(s(nul))) should return true. substractWhileY(X,0,rezult). substractWhileY(s(X),Y,rezult):- Y > 0, number is 1, substractWhileY(X,Y - number, rezult). degreeOftwo(X):- substractWhileY(X,2,rezult), pagalba(X, 2, rezult). calculateAnswer(X, currentCounter, currentValue):- currentCounter is currentCounter * 2, substractWhileY(currentValue, currentCounter , rezult), rezult\= null, calculateAnswer(X, currentCounter , rezult). My idea was to check if given therm is degree of any two and if it is not than it is not the degree of two. With numbers it should work like this. For example i give number 8. First time it checks if 8 - 2 = 0. second time if 8 - 4 = 0. third time if 8 - 8 = 0. so the 8 id power of two. Maybe other solution would work better, so thanks for any help.

• What could possibly cause my computer to power down at random times?

  I have recently bought a new Power Supply and a new graphics card. My PC ran smoothly for a few months now but since a couple of days I'm having a strange problem. I am trying to isolate the problem to a specific piece of hardware (because if it's either the Power Supply or the Graphics card they are still under warranty). The problem started when I was playing a game (diablo 3). My PC suddenly powered down. I was unable to turn it on again by pressing the power button. I unplugged the power cable for a few seconds and plugged it back in. This time the pc powered on but the indication light turned orange instead of white as it normally does. The fans were not spinning and I did not see anything on my screen. After trying a couple of times I gave up. Two days later I tried again and this time the PC did boot up as usual. Everything looked okay until I tested if the problem was resolved by starting Diablo again. After about two minutes it powered down again as it did the first time. If I don't run any games my PC does power down after about 3-5 hours. Another fact that might be relevant: One time the PC did not shut down immediatly, instead first my graphics "powered down" but the music I was playing kept on playing. After about 20 seconds the pc powered down completely as usual. What I also noticed is that when I boot instantly after a power down, the chance of another power down occuring is much higher. Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this kind of behaviour or has a certain tool to diagnose the specific hardware parts? • Configuration for a two machine ESXi cluster using VSA to present local storage to VMs

  I'm designing a little vSphere 5 cluster for one of our remote sites. We have some IBM x3650s that have 6x 300GB 10K RPM drives in them, along with dual quad core CPUs and 24GB RAM. Because we use HP P4500 G2s at our primary site, we have licenses available for HP P4000 VSAs. I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to use them. Below is a basic drawing of what I want to accomplish: I want to run a P4000 VSA on each server and run them in a Network RAID-10 (Lefthand speak for network mirroring, think of it as RAID 1 across nodes or as an active/active storage cluster). I will then present this storage to guests that will run on this mini-cluster. It will be managed by a vCenter Server on our main site. All connections will be GbE with two dedicated to storage. Management and Data will share a pair of connections, since I don't expect there to be high load. These servers are just there to provide directory services, dhcp, printing, etc. Does anyone see anything potentially wrong with this approach? Is this the best way to do this without adding additional dedicated storage heads? Are there any pitfalls in this design, besides the lack of dedicated Data/Mgmt interfaces?

• Debugging Samba/CUPS printer sharing with Windows

  I've got a HP Deskjet hooked up to a Slackware 12.2 box. I've got CUPS set up and can print a test page from the box just fine. I've also got Samba set up and have a couple file shares that work fine. I'm trying to share that HP Deskjet out via Samba, but I can't get it to show up in any Windows system. I see the server and its file shares in Windows networking, but when I open the Printers, no printer shows up. Running net view \\servername from the command line lists the file shares, but no printers. Here's the pertinent part of my smb.conf, if that helps: [global] workgroup = HOMENET security = share hosts allow = 192.168.1. 192.168.2. 127. load printers = yes printcap name = cups printing = cups log file = /var/log/samba.%m max log size = 50 [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba browseable = no public = yes writable = no printable = yes guest only = yes Can anyone give me some pointers as to where to start looking for potential causes? Update: Running testparm shows no errors. • Installing OEM Windows Server 2008 under KVM

  Issue I have an HP server that came with an OEM copy of Windows Server 2008. I have installed CentOS 5.4 on the hardware and am trying to install Windows Server 2008 as a KVM guest. When I attempt to install Windows Server 2008 it complains that I am trying to install on unsupported hardware. This issue is caused because the hardware SMBIOS information is not being passed to the KVM guest. Background Before I go any further I want to state that what I am trying to do is within the license. HP offers a supported solution for VMWare but does not have an official solution for KVM. After much research the platform I am going to use is CentOS and KVM so please do not suggest other platforms. I emailed the KVM developers mailing list and was told that this is possible and was given the advice that: "You can dump SLIC table of your host bios and provide it to guest bios using -acpitable parameter." I used dmidecode and got the parameters that need to be passed, but I do not know where to pass the parameters into. Update Looks like CentOS 5.4 uses virt-install instead of qemu. Qemu is in the package manager and I was able to install it after uninstalling qemu-img (they conflict and qemu contains the packages in qemu-img). So now I know how to pass the acpitable parameters, but I am having trouble mapping what came out of dmidecode into -acpitable.

• Sony PMB causing failure to load Windows 7 Pro 64-bit normally or even Safe Mode

  After installing Sony's Picture Motion Browser on my desktop with Windows 7 Pro x64, it always goes to Startup Repair due to Windows 7 failing to start. This always happens after I try to install it. I've installed with all unnecessary programs closed and all disk drives and unnecessary usb ports empty. I don't exactly know what is causing the problem. Any ideas? • Mac OS X duplex printing problem: one- vs. multi-paged documents

  I like to print on pre-printed stationery using the Preview.app and a duplex-capable HP Color Laserjet 4700 (PostScript) printer. The print dialog handles one and two-paged documents differently: the paper needs to be placed differently into the tray if the document contains one page versus when it contains two pages. This is not obvious when printing on plain paper but becomes obvious when front and reverse side of sheets are marked. Otherwise the first page would end up on the reverse side of the first sheet. I believe the problem is caused by the printer driver setting duplex printing to false (using the PostScript setpagedevice operator) when emitting a single-page document versus keeping it set to true when emitting multi-page documents. All this despite that duplex printing is always specified in the printer dialog. When printing a single-sided document, duplex=true and duplex=false seem to make a difference with respect which side of a sheet gets printed on. It would be also helpful if others could confirm the problem actually exists. I suspect this problem is not limited to specific printers. I'm on OS X 10.6 and I checked two different HP printers.

• How to diagnose storage system scaling problems?

  We are currently testing the maximum sequential read throughput of a storage system (48 disks total behind two HP P2000 arrays) connected to HP DL580 G7 running RHEL 5 with 128 GB of memory. Initial testing has been mainly done by running DD-commands like this: dd if=/dev/mapper/mpath1 of=/dev/null bs=1M count=3000 In parallel for each disk. However, we have been unable to scale the results from one array (maximum throughput of 1.3 GB/s) to two (almost the same throughput). Each array is connected to a dedicated host bust adapter, so they should not be the bottleneck. The disks are currently in JBOD configuration, so each disk can be addressed directly. I have two questions: Is running multiple DD commands in parallel really a good way to test maximum read throughput? We have noticed very high SWAPIN-% numbers in iotop, which I find hard to explain because the target is /dev/null How shoud we proceed in trying to find the reason for the scaling problem? Do you thing the server itself is the bottleneck here, or could there be some linux parameters that we have overlooked?

• Computer hangs at BIOS screen. Cannot enter setup.

  I have an HP Pavilion a6500f (it's a year out of warranty) and it's hanging on the blue HP BIOS screen. If I mash F10 while it's starting up, it will say "Entering Setup..." but I will see no results. It will hang there and not do anything. If I actually wait until I can see the screen and then hit F10, there's no response at all and the computer will sit at the BIOS menu. I've dusted and cleaned it out, reseated the memory, switched the RAM slots, and reset the CMOS battery using the reset jumper. I'm out of ideas. I'm pretty sure it's not a hard drive issue, since my problem is at the BIOS. After this post, I'll disconnect the hard drive and try to just boot without it. Anyone have any other ideas? Edit: Okay, so I tried disconnecting the hard drive and now I can get back into the BIOS. I reconnected it and I'm locked out again. So the problem is my hard drive.. I guess I should delete this post unless someone has any ideas as to what's wrong with the drive?

• why does my dl380 G3 crank the fan up so high (and how do i stop it?)

  I've got a HP DL380 and after I leave it on for a while it decides it needs to run the fans at a much higher speed than it did before. It's really loud and annoying. Is there any way to manually control the fan speed? Or otherwise get it to stop doing that? Thanks. edit: I guess i should have made it clear that this is a bit of a jury-rigged situation. I know the ideal solution is to put the thing in a server room with nice cool air. Unfortunately, that isn't happening. This is the sort of problem that calls for a jury rigged solution like manually setting the fan speed and accepting the fact that it's going to run hot shutting down a CPU (can i do that?) spinning down the disks when they're not in use (is that possible?) solution: Install HP's system health monitoring daemon, hpasmd. I installed it to try to figure out what was going on, and just running it fixed the problem.

  Hi, my app does something when the screen goes black, but I want it to only carry out that task if the screen was turned off "by itself", through a screen timeout - NOT when the user presses the power-button. I'm using this algorithm, at the moment, but something inside myself dies anytime I see it: 10**( int( math.log10(x) ) ) # python pow( 10, (int) log10(x) ) // C I could implement simple log10 and pow functions for my problems with one loop each, but still I'm wondering if there is some bit magic for decimal numbers.
