  • ubuntu 12.04 sound not working in applications

    I run Ubuntu on a DELL Vostro 3500 laptop. Everything was working perfectly since this morning, after an update... I can't play any multimedia sound anymore, that includes youtube and others, mp3 in Rythmbox, sound of video in VLC. I can see my device in the setting window and I can play tests sound, but nothing else. Any idea? EDIT: I'm switching very often from to HDMI output, which is deconnected right now. I've tried running VLC, and in the audio menu, you can choose the output so now I can listen to music via VLC but not with other programs. Looks like ubuntu is not totally switching the audio device after unplugging the HDMI cable. Is there any command line which can do so?

  • Returning status code where one of many errors could have occured

    I'm developing a PHP login component which includes functions to manipulate the User object, such as $User->changePassword(string $old, string $new) What I need some advice with is how to return a status, as the function can either succeed (no further information needs to be given) or fail (and the calling code needs to know why, for example incorrect password, database problem etc.) I've come up with the following ideas: Unix-style: return 0 on success, another code on failure. This doesn't seem particularly common in PHP and the language's type-coercion messes with this (a function returning FALSE on success?) This seems to be the best I can think of. Throw an exception on error. PHP's exception support is limited, and this will make life harder for anybody trying to use the functions. Return an array, containing a boolean for "success" or not, and a string or an int for "failure status" if applicable. None of these seem particularly appealing, does anyone have any advice or better ideas?

    I got a hosting account at HOSTGATOR. it was a shared account and i had three websites present over there. now, i have upgraded my account to VPS at HOSTGATOR and i want to transfer only ONE website over the new VPS. say, mydom.net. this website includes wordpress installation and other custom pages and setup can somebody please guide me How can I transfer the web to my new account? with speed, accuracy, and such that my website remains in working condition.. what will I do about wordpress? simply copy it will work?(I dont thnk so), if not how can I move it? I need guideline. and I am asking the question with a hope that many others will also learn the things just as i am learning,, and one quick thing, answering it like creating a manual can help people a lot...that's my thinking.. thanks to all

I recently tried A Small Orange, whose GUI was not compelling, and I quickly learned to loathe c panel. I looked into using GoDaddy, but reviews of their service have been very negative. I was satisfied with iPower's control panel, so something similar would be appropriate.   • How do I make the 'Shut Down the Computer' window be monochrome ?

    When I hit the power button of my computer, a window titled 'Shut Down the Computer' appears. It gives a few options, including shutting down or restarting. This window is different following the context I hit the power button : when logged in and seeing my desktop, it includes colourful icons (red for shutting down, for example). when I am not logged in yet, the icons are monochrome and a little bit more stylized. I clearly prefer the last type of icons : how do I set them as default whatever the context of use of the 'Shut Down the Computer' window ?

  • Good source for interview-style coding problems for entry/intermediate developers?

As a result, I lack experience from many things, such as the basic homework/test questions many CS graduates take for granted. I recently had a tech screen interview where I fumbled and struggled to finish a (relatively) common question, I believe due to this inexperience. My question to all of you is this: do you know a good source for a bunch of these problems that includes answers, for an entry/intermediate developer who is trying to gain coding problem solving experience?     Possible Duplicate: Is there a maximum size that web pages should be kept under? What is the ideal file size for a web page? Specifically when it comes to image sizes, what's the total file size for a webpage which includes several images. I tend to compress images down as much as possible before it starts to visually lose quality. We run several CMS website's and the clients tend to ask this question a lot! I'd love to hear another view on it.

    Hypothetical situation, I have 3 node modules all native, A, B, and C.  A is a utilities module which exposes several functions to javascript through the node interface, in addition it declares/defines a rich set of native structures and functions B is a module which is dependent on data structures and source in A, it exposes some functions to javascript, in addition it declares/defines native structures and functions C is a module which is dependent on data structures and source in A & B, it exploses some functions to javascript, in addition it declares/defines native structures and functions So far when setting up these modules I have a preinstall script to install other dependent includes, but in order to access all of another modules source what is the best way to link to it's share library object (*.node) ?     JavaFX 2.2.4 and JDK 7u10 were released on Tuesday. In addition to the release documentation, the following new information is provided: A new document, Using the Image Ops API, describes how to read and write raw pixel data to and from JavaFX images. The Handling JavaFX Events document has been updated with more information on touch events. The Working with Touch Events chapter and Touch Events sample provide information about handling individual touch points to provide sophisticated responses to touch actions. The Implementing Best Practices document has been updated to include information about running tasks on background threads. The Troubleshooting section of Deploying JavaFX Applications now includes a section about disabling the automatic proxy configuration in your application code.   • NetBeans 7.0.1 now in RC

    What would a GlassFish release be without a NetBeans version to go with it? The NetBeans team has released the NetBeans IDE 7.0.1 RC 1 which will bring full compatibility with JDK 7 as well as GlassFish 3.1.1 support (this particular RC ships with the soft code freeze build of GlassFish 3.1.1). This 7.0.1 RC 1release also includes numerous bugfixes and performance improvements across all areas and is available from the usual download page and the final version of NetBeans IDE 7.0.1 is expected in late July (once JDK 7 has shipped would be an educated guess). Note that if you're an existing NetBeans 7.0 user you'll be offered with updates to your existing install via the Update Center once 7.0.1 final ships.

  • Add closure after concatenating files or keep one for each separate file?

    At the moment every javasrcipt file in our project includes closure wrapper. Before deploying all files are concatenated and minimized. And i'm asking myself, do we really need all that closures OR one closure added after concatenation will do the job. I can see only one reason not to do that - the variable we are sharing between files will get in the global namespace. But there is no conflict so is don't see any problem. The real question is what other cons may be? Or more generally what approach is better - one closure or many?

  • Compiling program that uses libpcap on Mac OSX using iPhone 3.1.1 SDK for use on iPhone

    Hey SOV users, I have a question that I'm hoping some iPhone Developers may be able to help with. I had a look at statically compiling a binary on my Mac and moving it over to the iPhone for execution. I have managed to get this bit of it working by installing the iPhone 3.1.3 SDK on my Mac and setting the architecture to the iPhone in the gcc line as follows; /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/bin/gcc -I ~/Downloads/libpcap-1.1.1/pcap-compiled/ -arch armv6 -isysroot /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS2.1.sdk -o test test.c I have managed to successfully compile a "Hello World" C program and executed it on the iPhone with success. e.g. include int main() { printf("Hello, World!\n"); return(0); } This worked a charm. I am also using 'ldid' to sign the application (but only if necessary). Anyways, I have been trying to get a program to compile which uses libpcap (http://www.tcpdump.org/) but with little success. I have downloaded and installed libpcap-1.1.1 on my mac and set the configure --prefix to /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS2.1.sdk/usr/local and build the application. I then saw that the includes actually reside in Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS2.1.sdk/usr/includes and so moved the Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS2.1.sdk/usr/local/include files (which contained only the pcap stuff) to the correct location. I then attempted to compile the test program using; /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/bin/gcc -I /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/include/ -arch armv6 -isysroot /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS2.1.sdk -o pcap pcap.c -lpcap This worked a lot better than other tests but produces an error; i.e. ld: library not found for -lcrt1.o collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Do you have any ideas as to how I can do this successfully? I've tried a load of different things but none seem to be successful. Basically, I just want to install (or add) some headers to the existing iPhoneOS SDK for use in compiling programs. Any ideas?   • How to truncate milliseconds off of a .NET DateTime

    I'm trying to compare a time stamp from an incoming request to a database stored value. SQL Server of course keeps some precision of milliseconds on the time, and when read into a .NET DateTime, it includes those milliseconds. The incoming request to the system, however, does not offer that precision, so I need to simply drop the milliseconds. I feel like I'm missing something obvious, but I haven't found an elegant way to do it (C#).
