  I'm looking to do some homebrew development for either the Wii, Xbox360 or PS3. I'll be developing from a Linux system. The programming language doesn't matter. Wii - devkitPPC and libogc look fairly easy and complete Xbox360 - Mono.XNA looks interesting but not very feature complete PS3 - psl1ght seems interesting but I haven't been able to find out much How homebrew friendly are each of these consoles? Is someone able to give a comparison of each of these scenes?

• Good Scoop: The PeopleSoft/IBM Backstory

  Sometimes you're searching for something online and you find an unrelated, bonus nugget. Last week I stumbled across an interesting blog post from Chris Heller of a PeopleSoft consulting shop in San Ramon, CA called Grey Sparling. I don't know these guys. But Chris, who apparently used to work on the PeopleTools team, wrote a great article on a pre-acquisition, would-be deal between IBM and PeopleSoft that would have standardized PeopleSoft on IBM technology. The behind-the-scenes perspective is interesting. His commentary on the challenges that the company and PeopleSoft customers would have encountered if the deal had gone through was also interesting: ·         "No common ownership. It's hard enough to get large groups of people to work together when they work for the same company, but with two separate companies it is much, much harder. Even within Oracle, progress on Fusion applications was slow until Thomas Kurian took over Fusion applications in addition to Fusion middleware." ·         "No customer buy-in. PeopleSoft customers weren't asking for a conversion to WebSphere, so the fact that doing that could have helped PeopleSoft stay independent wouldn't have meant much to them, especially since the cost of moving to whatever a "PeopleSoft built on WebSphere" would have been significant." ·         "No executive buy-in. This is related to the previous point, but it's worth calling out separately. If Oracle had walked away and the deal with IBM had gone through, and PeopleSoft customers got put through the wringer as part of WebSphere move, all of the PeopleSoft project teams would be put in the awkward position of explaining to their management why these additional costs and headaches were happening. Essentially they would need to "sell" the partnership internally to their own management team. That's not a fun conversation to have." I'm not surprised that something like this was in the works. But I did find the inside scoop and Heller's perspective on the challenges particularly interesting. • User Group Meeting Summary - April 2010

  Thanks to everyone who could make it to what turned out to be an excellent SBUG event.  First some thanks to:  Speakers: Anthony Ross and Elton Stoneman Host: The various people at Hitachi who helped to organise and arrange the venue.   Session 1 - Getting up and running with Windows Mobile and the Windows Azure Service Bus In this session Anthony discussed some considerations for using Windows Mobile and the Windows Azure Service Bus from a real-world project which Hitachi have been working on with EasyJet.  Anthony also walked through a simplified demo of the concepts which applied on the project.   In addition to the slides and demo it was also very interesting to discuss with the guys involved on this project to hear about their real experiences developing with the Azure Service Bus and some of the limitations they have had to work around in Windows Mobiles ability to interact with the service bus.   On the back of this session we will look to do some further activities around this topic and the guys offered to share their wish list of features for both Windows Mobile and Windows Azure which we will look to share for user group discussion.   Another interesting point was the cost aspects of using the ISB which were very low.   Session 2 - The Enterprise Cache In the second session Elton used a few slides which are based around one of his customer scenario's where they are looking into the concept of an Enterprise Cache within the organisation.  Elton discusses this concept and also a codeplex project he is putting together which allows you to take advantage of a cache with various providers such as Memcached, AppFabric Caching and Ncache.   Following the presentation it was interesting to hear peoples thoughts on various aspects such as the enterprise cache versus an out of process application cache.  Also there was interesting discussion around how people would like to search the cache in the future.   We will again look to put together some follow-up activity on this   Meeting Summary Following the meeting all slide decks are saved in the skydrive location where we keep content from all meetings: http://cid-40015ea59a1307c8.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/.Public/SBUG/SBUG%20Meetings/2010%20April   Remember that the details of all previous events are on the following page. http://uksoabpm.org/Events.aspx   Competition We had three copies of the Windows Identity Foundation Patterns and Practices book that were raffles on the night, it would be great to hear any feedback on the book from those who won it.   Recording The user group meeting was recorded and we will look to make this available online sometime soon.   UG Business The following things were discussed as general UG topics:   We will change the name of the user group to the UK Connected Systems User Group to we are more inline with other user groups who cover similar topics and we believe this will help us to attract more members.  The content or focus of the user group is not expected to change.   The next meeting is 26th May and can be registered at the following link: http://sbugmay2010.eventbrite.com/

  During the PowerPivot Workshop in London we received many interesting questions and Alberto had the inspiration to write this nice post about Slowly Changing Dimensions handling in PowerPivot. It is interesting the consideration about SCD Type I attributes in a SCD Type II dimension – you can probably generate them in a more dynamic way in PowerPivot (thanks to Vertipaq and DAX) instead of relying on a relational table containing all the data you need, which usually requires a more complex ETL process....(read more)

  Alberto Ferrari wrote an interesting post about a “different approach” in creating a ranking measure with PowerPivot . • serious 404 problem, suggestions for hunting them all down

  I have a bit of a situation coming up. Due to a complete website structure redesign that is basically inevitable, I expect to have the following: Our sitemap of about 12,000 url's have about 90-95% of them change Out of those 12,000, I expect around 5000-6000 internal links to go dead in the process. No external links to this site yet, as it is still in development. Is there a tool out there that can do the following: I can feed the sitemap.xml after the restructuring have it parse each pages links for 404 errors on that page only report the pages/errors, preferably with just the url it is on, the url of the error, and the anchor text I have found a few tools, but all of them seem to be limited to 100 pages. Any advice for an intermediate webmaster to help this situation? 301 redirects are not viable in this situation.

• Why do my Google sitelinks show gibberish for a PDF link?

  I have a website which Google lists nicely along with site links. One of the site links - to a PDF file - shows un-human gibberish e.g 67,8;45:: 56 83 @7<1. (7/0;,*;: /59( (7/0;,;<7, <7)(60:4 (9<7 /+ +2, VU I thought it might be due to the PDF's title property so I changed it. But there hasn't been an improvement to the site link. Other PDF site links are fine and display the title property as desired. Does anyone know how I might rectify this problem or what might be the cause? My uninformed guess is it's some transliteration problem between code and display text which, I suppose, means I ought to recondition the PDF file in some way. Not sure how.

  Actually i am running website on wordpress where i have installed Transposh plugin on my site 'example'. Unfortunately, despite having English as the default language and therefore available at example.com/xxx, Google is indexing example.com/en/xxx so i m getting problem with duplicate content now i want to remove this plugin and links from google so that my content will be refine without getting duplicate content pages. Do you have any solution to do this safely. I think myself to remove this plugin from website, though it will create 404 errors from google links but i can add redirect code in htaccess till google would remove that "example.com/en/xxx " not found links. If you know any other healthy way to handle this please help me!

• Cloud storage that works with rsnapshot?

  I’ve started using rsnapshot as my backup system for my home PC. I really like the idea of hard links and how they are handled. But I can’t find the best workflow. Currently I keep my snapshots on the same partition and will copy the newest snapshot to a pen-drive at the end of the week. Cloud storage is what I’m looking for. Dropbox doesn’t fit my needs, because there is no way to make Dropbox respect hard links — all snapshots are treated as full snapshots. Renting a server is pretty expensive, so my question is, are there better alternatives for backup in the cloud? I would like to benefit from hard links and send only incremental backups, just like I do with my local host.
