  • Why do people develop emotional attachments for programming languages?

    - by Andrew Heath
Aside from people who actually developed the languages, I really don't get how someone can develop passion/attachment/perhaps even obsession for a programming language... yet not a day goes by that I don't see a programmer exhibiting this behavior on the internet. I understand how people can feel this way regarding spoken languages - but there's a whole boatload of culture, history, etc that come attached with them. By comparison, the "Python Culture" (as an example) is so small as to be wholly insignificant. Does everyone have a language they love? Am I the odd one out? The dirty polygamist? Are these people rational or silly?

  • Multi language CMS?

    - by Adam
Is there any CMS such as expression engine or wordpress that allows a user to click a button and convert all the text to another language (it would have to be human generated otherwise it has too many mistakes probably). I'd like to know if there are any good solutions out there that work for real world use, in like business company websites.

  • Microsoft C++ Language Reference

    - by eSKay
Whenever any question is asked, and a reference text is needed, I never see MSDN C++ Language Reference being referred. I was browsing through it and I personally feel that it is extremely well written. Is there some specific reason it is not used as often as a standard? Is it because it contains some VC++ specific features?

  • implementing type inference

    - by deepblue
well I see some interesting discussions here about static vs. dynamic typing I generally prefer static typing, due to compile type checking, better documented code, etc. However I do agree that they do clutter up the code if done the way Java does it, for example. so Im about to start building a language of my own and type inference is one of the things that I want to implement, in a functional style language... I do understand that it is a big subject, and Im not trying to create something that has not been done before, just basic inferencing... any pointers on what to read up that will help me with this? preferably something more pragmatic/practical as oppose to more theoretical category theory/type theory texts. If there's a implementation discussion text out here, with data structures/algorithms, that would just be lovely much appreciated

  • What programming language is good for a beginner and for a hobby? [closed]

    - by Lawrence
Possible Duplicates: What is the easiest language to start with? What programming language should I choose for an independent study language? Well as the title says what language is good for a beginner and for a hobby? I'll probably be making some games or desktop apps with a gui most likely. I'll be working in Windows and Linux. Oh and could you also give some links to tutorials for the language?

What's the best way to store language data? Keep it as variables in some kind of lang.php file... $l_ipsum = 'smth'; $l_rand = 'string'; Or select them from a database? I'm in search of your advice.

  • Picking the right language

    - by simion
I am a student at University so my experience is limited, hence the question. If someone says to you, here is a task to code, what are you looking at in order to choose the language or paradigm in which you will do it in? Hope the question makes sense?

  • I want to learn a new language!

    - by Alex
Hi, I'm a college student majoring in computer science. I know java and will be learning C++ the next couple years at school. I want to add another language to my repertoire and have gotten conflicting advice: Ruby, Python, Perl, JavaScript, PHP, AJAX, among others. I was wondering what everyone's opinions were on the relative value of each of these languages in the job market, the ease of learning of each of the languages, and just personal preferences when it comes to the languages mentioned above. Thanks!

  • Language to choose for developing website.

    - by Ravi
What is the best language for developing a website. I know its kind of an odd question. I recently saw a lot of articles for developing a website and they all chose PHP. I mostly work in Java technologies, so was wondering is Java limited to web application and not for websites.

  • iPhone internationalization: falling back to a default language

    - by MihaiD
Consider the following situation: We have two Localizable.string files, one in en.lproj and one in it.lproj When the user switches to English or Italian, the proper localized string is loaded using NSLocalizedString(@"keyword", nil) If one of the files is missing the keyword, the string is not retrieved Is there any way to make this macro load the string from a specific language if it's keyword is not found in the current locale's Localizable.string?

  • What are the things Java got right?

    - by hamletdarcy
What are the things that Java (the language and platform) got categorically right? In other words, what things are more recent programming languages preserving and carrying forward? Some easy answer are: garbage collection, a VM, lack of pointers, classloaders, reflection(?) What about language based answers? Please don't list the things Java did wrong, just right. (note by Mark Harrison) This is an interesting and useful question, especially for those of us who don't use java regularly. I'm voting for reopening. Please don't close as argumentative, as it doesn't seem to be causing any arguments.

  • What is the benefits and drawbacks of using header files?

    - by vodkhang
I had some experience on programming languages like Java, C#, Scala as well as some lower level programming language like C, C++, Objective - C. My observation is that low level languages separate out header files and implementation files while other higher level programming language never separate it out. They use some identifiers like public, private, protected to do the jobs of header files. I saw one benefit of using header file (in some book like Code Complete), they talk about that using header files, people can never look at our implementation file and it helps with encapsulation. A drawback is that it creates too many files for me. Sometimes, it looks like verbose. It is just my thought and I don't know if there are any other benefits and drawbacks that people ever see and work with header file This question may not relate directly to programming but I think that if I can understand better about programming to interface, design software.
