• Unity does not display properly [closed]

  Ubuntu Unity on the Ubuntu netbook edition installs without a problem but when I log in though, where the panels are, there is just blank area with a shadow effect style thing on it. I can open apps but the Window buttons and the global menu are not visable. Does this mean that I cannot use Unity. I'm running it through Wubi on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. My total ammount of graphics memory is 831MB My dedicated memory is 128MB. The odd thing is is that Windows Aero displays without a problem so why is there a problem with Unity Hope this helps Ben

• Problems with Intel graphics and external display

  I have Asus Zenbook ux31 with Intel HD 3000 GPU and Ubuntu 12.10 64 bits. I usually use external monitor and when update GPU controller it removes previous configuration. So after updates Ubuntu only detect external monitor and when I enter to Ubuntu with laptop's monitor Unity doesn't start and I only see black screen. If I re-install Ubuntu all works fine until next GPU update :(( Another think that after some GPU update Ubuntu doesn't detect fine monitor and I have to restart 1-2 times Ubuntu to Unity starts fine ¬¬ Someone have some problem and know some solution? I hope some day Intel GPU will work fine with Ubuntu!

• How to display time in the top panel?

  I thought I already had the time up there in the top bar, and it may have been so in previous Ubuntu versions (don't remember, my Ubuntu laptop is just one of three computers I use). Only that I just noticed - me being someone who never wears a watch, has the cellphone turned off 95% of the time and relying on the computer to tell the time - that there is no time being displayed anywhere, and I had expected it in the top bar on the Unity desktop. I searched around but found no obvious solution, but I'm sure someone immediately knows how I can get my time (back?) into the top bar?

• Icons don't display for some application launchers

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop for some time now. Since the first day only I have been facing the problem with icon images of some application not appearing up. It causes a lot of inconvenience in locating/identifying an application to be launched. I have updated my Ubuntu with the latest build today only but still the problem persists. I have googled around and tried everything relevant available out there but with no success. Please note that reinstalling Ubuntu is NOT an option right now.

  for the longest time after about 5 minutes my screen would blank out. Now the screen will go blank after 5 minutes but then 2 seconds after that it will light up white and keep the laptop backlighting on. I didnt change any settings to my knowledge it just happened randomly after powering it on one day and has occurred since then. I wish to resort back to blanking the screen out completely since i leave this computer on all the time and its hard to sleep with a huge white light all the time. "xset dpms force off" just yeilds me ---- xset: unable to open display ""

• Laptop HDMI out to monitor DVI in

  I have a laptop that i'm trying to fix, and it has HDMI out. I have a cable i bought for my HTPC which does DVI out to HDMI in, which worked fine. Was hoping to be able to use this same cable for HDMI out to DVI in, is it possible? UPDATE: Point of clarification, The laptop's display doesn't work (it was dropped) and I'm trying to figure out what's working and what isn't. in addition to HDMI out, it has VGA out, but that seems to have a short in it, and doesn't display properly (sometimes it works, sometimes, it shows stuff in 256 colors in 800x640). I can tell the LCD screen works (comes on) so i think it's whatever is carrying the data to it that doesn't work. I know more often than know, the display is what breaks... The cable i'm using is a standard HDMI to DVI cable, there are no audio connections or anything. Thanks!

  At my desktop PC, I have 3 displays hooked up on my Palit GeForce GTX 480 to extend my desktop: DVI: Samsung SyncMaster T220 (22" 16:10, 1680x1050, as my main) DVI: Samsung SyncMaster 940BF (19" 4:3, 1280x1024) HDMI: Sony Bravia KDL-32D3000 (32" 16:9, 1360x768) As expected, the GFX card can only utilize 2 of the displays at any given time, so I have to manually switch using Windows' "Display Properties" dialog, each time I want to switch between them. I've tried UltraMon, DisplayFusion and PowerStrip (so please don't refer me to a question where those are given as solutions) but they are unable to switch monitors. Instead they can only change display resolutions and settings on the existing active monitors, with specially weird results when I've saved the monitor states and then tried to switch monitors using the saved states! Any idea on how to bypass the awful "Display Properties" dialog and it's "confirm your change" timer?

• Use xrandr to set the absolute position of the screen?

  I am running XFCE on Fedora 15. I use xrandr to set the secondary display (HDMI-0) to be to the right of the primary (DVI-0), however it is always at the top-right. Is it possible to set the absolute position of the display (e.g. DVI-0 at 0,0 and HDMI-0 at 1920,56), or even set the display to be at the bottom-right? I cannot modify the Xorg.conf, which would be the easy way, as that would mean generating an Xorg.conf file (there is none right now), and I do not know of any automated tool to do that (other than the fglrx driver). The reason why I need this is because I want to extend the XFCE panel accross both monitors, but with there being a 56-pixel-wide dead zone at the bottom I cannot do this.

• Output to TV only works if monitor is plugged in

  I am trying to use my TV as the sole output for a computer. The computer has a graphics card with 2 outputs - one RGB and one DVI. I have the RGB output going to the TV, and when the DVI output is connected to a monitor, display works fine on both the monitor and the TV. If I turn off the monitor, or even turn off power to the monitor, the TV continues to display the desktop. If I unplug the DVI cable from the monitor (remember that the monitor doesn't have any power at this point), the TV stops presenting the desktop and displays a "Not Accepted" message. When starting up the computer, the TV displays fine, but stops working at the "press ctrl-alt-delete" screen unless the monitor is connected. How can I make the TV show the display without the monitor? The TV is an LG RT-42PZ45V. The graphics card is an ATI Radeon series HD4350 512MB GDDR2. The computer is running Windows Server 2008 r2.

  I am setting up a test environment, made up of various Linux boxes, and I have the need to launch an instance of Firefox on a remote machine via ssh. The remote machine has Ubuntu Desktop (11) and Firefox installed. The source machine is a Continuous Integration server and it creates an ssh session to the remote machine from a non-GUI environment. It then runs a script, which tries to launch Firefox on the remote machine. However, since the ssh session is a from a non-GUI environment, there is no display. Is it possible to have a headless X-windows display? i.e. a virtual display in the remote environment for Firefox to run in? What options do I have?

  This question already has an answer here: Can I sleep one of the displays on a dual-monitor setup (running Windows 7)? 4 answers I want to be able to 'put the display to sleep' on one of my two monitors when it isn't needed, so it doesn't distract me or use unnecessary power. Ideally, the display would be asleep, but the OS would remain in dual-monitor mode, so I could still have a variety of windows open in the sleeping monitor's display space, which would mean I wouldn't have to keep switching between single- and dual-monitor modes. Its the same as "Can I sleep one of the displays on a dual-monitor setup (running Windows 7)?" I just wasn't sure I could comment on such an old thread. None of the answers there provided a perfect solution and I was wondering if there is now a solution available.

• Installation after boot shows no display

  I just booted 12.04 for installation from USB-stick. But there is a problem with the display. After boot I see a rectangle on the lower left corner of the screen, after a while I see "Ubuntu 12.04 ..." loading from USB-Stick, the Ubuntu-Desktop starts fine, clicking on Ubuntu-Install seems to work ... till identification, then Installation-window closed and ... nothing more happens. So I want to try Installation direct from the Menu at the beginning - before Ubuntu-12.04-loading. Butt I cannot see any menus at that time. I think there is an graphic-problem? How can I get the installation by menus, how would the Installation via Desktop going to work? Bye Matthias

• Ubuntu/Nvidia lists DVI dual cable as single

  I have an NVidia Quadro FX 880M graphics card, from which I am trying to drive 2 monitors: my internal laptop montior (15.6", 1920x1080, Nvidia driver says it's running via DisplayPort) and an external 27" monitor (Dell U2711, 2560x1440 native resolution, via DVI). I've hooked the dual DVI cable to the dual DVI port on my dock (Dell PR03X) and installed the proprietary NVidia driver, but I cannot seem to get the full 2560x1440 out of the larger 27" external monitor. Looking at the NVidia driver settings, the monitor's connection is reported as a single DVI cable, rather than a dual one, which would explain the reduced resolution. Does anyone have any experience with an issue like this? What can I do to make full use of my new monitor? (Possibly) Relevant Information: There is no DVI port on the laptop itself, but one is provided via the dock. The laptop and dock both provide a DisplayPort jack, but I have been unable to get this working on either w/ the monitor. I did have the nouveau driver installed when I installed the nvidia proprietary driver, but have since removed it (no change in the monitor situation when I removed it).   I was using Ubuntu 13.04 till a few days ago. I had installed Nemo and I guess cinnamon got installed too (I was still using Unity nonetheless). One of the good things about that was the lock screen somehow changed to mimick cinnamon's (with the background as a darkened version of desktop background and date/time displayed), something like this: I have no idea how this happened, but it looked great. It does not seem to work on Ubuntu 13.10. Anyone has any ideas to get a similar lock screen? I just need to display the date/time on one side with the bg as a darkened version of my desktop wallpaper

• Multiple cable adapter setup not working - VGA to smartphone. All cables tested and work

  Issue Pictured overhead projector setup does not work. #1 - #2 - #3 - Phone. All cables are tested and work! The issue is the HDMI connection between cable #2 and #3. With all other cables, the screen will automatically be displayed onto the projector screen. No extra work needed. With the pictured setup, the smartphone screen is not displayed onto the projector screen. What is the issue with the HDMI connection?? Background We recently had to do presentations at work (school), but the administration only provided VGA means of hooking up to it. Mostly likely reason probably dealt with cost. Anyways, there are several teachers that have brand new Samsung Series 9 ultrabooks (or similar). You know, the ones without VGA support. So I bought an adapter for those ultrabooks. Cable #5 in the picture below. However, both my coworker and I have been wanting to just display our phone screens on the projector. This I knew would require some extra work. • Can't replace MDM Display Manager with LightDM!

  Well, I installed MDM, and found it's buggy with my VGA hardware due to the following screen after rebooting: This screen repeats, even if I choose Yes or No As I have access to the console (by pressing ALT+F2) I tried, sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm which gave me the following screen, Even if I choose LightDM nothing happens at the next reboot. • Strange display language in gnome shell

  I logged in gnome-shell, and found that the display language is set to some strange asian language (I think) without my prompt. I tried to change the locale settings but found that the default language is English (how?) despite of that strange language. • Nvidia GTS 360M in Asus laptop shuts off when gaming on external display

  I have had this problem on my Asus G51j Intel I5, Nvidia GTS360M graphics card. Just updated the drivers to latest off Nvidias site. Most games I play, If I hook it up through an external monitor(this happens whether it's HDMI or VGA). The laptop hard shuts down after about 20 minutes, give or take. This tends to happen on more graphically intense games like Call of dutys, bioshock. I'm running Windows 7, latest nvidia drivers. Games work fine on my laptops screen, and Movies, general computing work fine on the external displays. The laptop always sits on a cooling pad and the latest time was in front of my AC unit, I ran heatfan or whatever the heat tracking software was, and my temperatures were normal through a shut down. This has been happening for the life of the laptop. I dont play very many games, and even fewer on an external monitor, so this issue doesnt come up much Is it possible I have a faulty graphics card? Is there anything else I can try?

• Laptop will not boot

  This is a dell studio 1558 laptop. Now, something is wrong with the charger that it won't charge the laptop, but the laptop can turn on and operate properly as long as it is attached. It has been like this for a while, but it's not the problem. My problem is that as of yesterday, It takes several minutes to get past the "dell" startup logo (where is says "f2 setup" and "f12 boot options"). After it gets past, it beeps as normal to tell me about the charger and gives me the f2/f12 options and f1 to continue as normal. I can press f12 to get into boot options and load into my live USB BackTrack 5 ISO, but after "startx" it just stays at a black screen. I can also access BIOS setup, but see nothing that would help the problem. When I boot to the HDD, it gives me this Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 083) Realktek PCIe GBE Family Controller Series V.2.29 (06/30/09) PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM Operating System not found Also, pressing f8 gives me the same results as booting as normal. It is running Windows 7 Ultimate, dual-core Intel i3 @ 2.27ghz and 4gb RAM. I think there is an issue with the HDD, as the "Operating System not found" would lead me to believe. Is this a fixable problem?

• graphics performance better on battery?

  Anyone have any idea why my laptop would perform (considerably) better while on battery than while plugged in? It's a Dell Latitude E6420 with Windows 8 Pro. I tried mirroring all the settings in the selected power plan from "On battery" to "Plugged In" and that didn't help. I then just restored the defaults for all power plans (balanced and high performance). I'm still seeing the same results. The best example where it is most noticeable (don't laugh) is Sim City Social in Chrome. I'm probably seeing a performance increase of 5x on battery versus plugged in. This is easily reproducible too. I'm very confused. Could it be caused by dust? The laptop isn't that old and there is no visible dust. I'm not going to take it apart to check the insides as it's a corporate laptop. Could it be overheating? OS X, just like your phone, and any modern device, tries to figure out the brightness of the room you’re in, and adjust the brightness of the screen. If you are over in Windows, it’s called “Adaptive” brightness, while your phone will just call it “Auto”. While this technology is great in theory, I don’t really need max brightness all the time, and I like to control it manually to make sure I’m getting the best battery life. Open up System Preferences, head to Displays. Then uncheck the Automatically adjust brightness setting.

  I have ubuntu 11.10 , and I installed kde and I choosed kdm mistakly, as mentioned here I did this procedure Pretty simple. Open the file /etc/X11/default-display-manager with your editor of choice. Make sure you invoke that editor as root, otherwise it won't work. In that file there's a single line: /usr/bin/kdm Change that to /usr/bin/gdm and save the file. Reboot and you're in Gnome. now ,after booting, the log in manager gdm or kdm didn't appear . how can I fix this?
