• How to force Empathy Internet Messaging to change default webcam?

  I just recently bought a new webcam. It is USB powered. For personal reasons, I wish to not use the built in webcam that came with my netbook. I want to use this new one. I love empathy, it is a great chat client. But, I can't seem to switch my default webcam in empathy from the built in webcam, to the one I just bought. So, is there a way to force empathy to use the USB powered webcam, rather than the built in webcam?

Due to the complexity of the single page, particularly the JavaScripts used, I've think creating a dedicated project for the client side of web development and another for service side will organize and simplify the development. solution | +-- web / client side (single html page, js, css) | - contains asp.net project, and nancy library | to host the modules in application ptoject folder | +-- application / service (nancy modules, bootstrap for other layer) | . . . and other layers (three teir, domain driven, etc) . • Understanding the maximum hit-rate supported by a web-server

  I would like to crawl a publicly available site (and one that's legal to crawl) for a personal project. From a brief trial of the crawler, I gathered that my program hits the server with a new HTTPRequest 8 times in a second. At this rate, as per my estimate, to obtain the full set of data I need about 60 full days of crawling. While the site is legal to crawl, I understand it can still be unethical to crawl at a rate that causes inconvenience to the regular traffic on the site. What I'd like to understand here is -- how high is 8 hits per second to the server I'm crawling? Could I possibly do 4 times that (by running 4 instances of my crawler in parallel) to bring the total effort down to just 15 days instead of 60? How do you find the maximum hit-rate a web-server supports? What would be the theoretical (and ethical) upper-limit for the crawl-rate so as to not adversely affect the server's routine traffic?

• Spreadsheet or writing an application?

  When would you keep simple to medium-complex personal calculations in a spread sheet (Excel etc) and when would you write a small program or script for it? For example when you want to calculate what size of mortgage you can afford to buy a house. I could create a spreadsheet and have a nice tabular representation. On the other hand, if i would write a small script in a nice language (in my case Haskell), i'd have the security of a nice type system, preventing typos etc. What are the pro/cons in your opinion?

I don't want to reinvent the wheel and use an existing template/open source project and add my service specific functionality. • Why can't I get a working session with vnc4server

  We have a couple of (identical) Ubuntu 11.10 machines, configured with gnome-classic, which we use as remote servers, and let our clients log into personal user accounts we create for them using vnc4server. We configured all the machines in the same way, following a short manual we compiled, describing how to download, install and prepare a few tools and our software. The connection usually works fine, but today I set up a fresh machine, and experienced problems. After installing vnc4server, I ran vncpasswd and copied the following startup file to ~/.vnc/xstartup: #!/bin/sh unset SESSION_MANAGER unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS gnome-session --session=gnome-classic & [ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup [ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources xsetroot -solid grey vncconfig -iconic & Then, I started vnc4server and used two viewers (the Ubuntu Remote Desktop Viewer and Windows RealVNC Client) in two other machines, but instead of getting my desktop, I see an empty window with a grey-ish background pattern like this: and the cursor is a bold X. • Do I have to deliver my utility and helper code to clients?

  Over the years I've created a bunch of Java utility and helper libraries which I just attach to new projects. Then, when I deliver code to my clients, I send all the code except for the libraries themselves (not JARs but source code files). A client complained that he could not compile the project as some libraries were missing. I tried explaining him about my own libraries, but he was not satisfied. How do you handle such situations? I am still apporting changes to these libraries often and I cannot compile JARs each time I start working on some new project. How to overcome this issue - not to share private libraries (personal intellectual property) and have happy clients?

• How can I autoclean my gnome main menu?

  I like to experiment with lots of different software in my Ubuntu install. Then, every time Ubuntu reaches a new release cycle, I simply do a clean install (instead of upgrading) to get rid of all the extra software (and their respective config files/folders). The only thing I always backup and carry to the next install (besides personal files) are the config files for gnome, so my desktop is always the way I like it. =) The problem with that, is that the different packages I test out never get properly uninstalled, so my gnome main menu is full of broken links referring to software I had in previous installations (which got carried over because I kept the gnome config files). Is there any automated way to go through my gnome main menu and remove any broken links? I know how to manually edit the menu, and I could go through it myself, but I'm looking for some script or package that will clean for me so I wouldn't have to do it manually every release cycle.

If you have Visual Studio Team edition, then if you are using MSTEST, then you have built-in code coverage, however even then you may need a standalone tool. • Dual monitor, with a low resolution projector

  I need to show a presentaion to a conference tomorrow. Today I tryed my Ubuntu 10.04 with the projector. My notebook has a resolution of 1440x960, the projector seems to have a really lower resolution. However, thanks to nvidia-settings I configured my video card (a nvidia 9800), it works with other display, but not with the projector. I found the projector, configured as Twin-view, resolution Auto and pressed on Apply, then "Save to x Configuration". On projector is visualized just a quarter of my notebook display. I tryed also to reduce my resolution and to change the resolution of projector, but I obtained no better results. How can I Solve it? On windows all goes well, but I need Ubuntu for personal reasons.   When you interrupt the work on some code (be it because you have to work on something else or go on vacation or simply because it is the end of the day), once you close that Visual Studio project, what is your preferred way to remember what you want to do next when you start working on that code again. Do you set a Visual Studio bookmark or do write down something like // TODO: continue here next time? Maybe you have a special tag like // NEXT:? Do you put a sticky note on your monitor?   Plenty of sentiment exists that measuring commits is inappropriate. Has any study been done that tries to draw in more sources than commits - such as: browsing patterns IDE work (pre-commit) idle time multitasking I can't think of an easy way to do these measures, but I wonder if any study has been done. On a personal note, I do believe that reflection on one's own 'metrics' could be valuable regardless of (or in the absence of) using these for performance eval. I.E. an un-biased way to reflect on your habits. But this is a discussion matter beyond Q&A.

• Struck with a serious issue when upgrading to ubuntu 13.10 from 13.04

  I installed ubuntu 13.04 alongside windows xp professional. When I tried to upgrade to 13.10 from 13.04, it took some time to download and then it started cleaning the files and then message was displayed that xp cleaned (this msg was seen by my younger brother and then he cut the power off) . Now the computer when starts displays this screen and I dont know how to proceed. To anyone giving solution I would like tell you that I prefer xp over linux(personal reasons). So is there any way to get out of this problem, neithet I can open xp nor linux?

• Value of links on negative review pages

  A general assumption with SEO is more links = higher rankings. What I would like to know is does Google know what those links are referring to. I.e. if somebody gives a product a good review on their personal blog and links the review to another companies website (who are selling the product), would Google take consideration for the review/description link. Essentially would Google know that this link refers to a product. So if somebody is looking to buy a product, Google would know to include this page because the previous link said it sells products rather than just having information on products. Then to take this further, does Google know if a link is positive or negative. For example, If somebody creates a post saying, do not visit example.com, example.com is bad because of blah blah blah. Would Google know that the link is getting bad feedback and therefore would it have a negative affect on rankings, or would Google go oh its just another link and give it better rankings?

• failure to restore backup from deja dup

  I had ubuntu 12.04.1 and I made a backup with deja dup of the home folder in an external hard disk. Today I installed ubuntu 14.4 and erased the ubuntu 12.04.1. Now I'm trying to restore my back up. First it ask where is the back up to restore, then it ask of what date to restore, and then it starts, after a wile ask for the password. I put the password and it says Restoring and stays in preparing with out any advancement. Don't show any error, just stays preparing. The window of details is in white. I had all my documents... it's very bad for me, all my personal data... lost? Thanks for any help, Layla.

• Wireless network unstable and often WPA2 protected networks just don't work

  I have an issue with my wireless network,so that the connection is working for only a few minutes, after which my browser no longer is able to load pages, even if the wireless is still active/connected. Furthermore, most of the time WPA2-personal protected networks don't work, (yesterday was the first time it worked - for a few minutes). By "don't work" I mean that it seems to successfully connect, but the browser can't load pages. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 32bit, and my wireless card is a RaLink rt3090. No changes have been done to any settings since Ubuntu was installed - networking began working on its own after the installation - but as described in first paragraph not very well.

• New website, plans to go large. How do you protect yourself?

  I'm planning to create a new site that (in hopes) will make it to a decent state of popularity and use. I have made sites before, but they weren't serious, with any intended purpose other than personal and friend use. I've never been able to find a solid post on good steps to protecting yourself, and your site/idea before you start. This site will always be free, and will not be bringing it any revenue by ads or whatnot, but I plan to in the future and would want to make I'm in the clear legally for one. Do you need to copyright anything? Or anything of the same concept as copyright? Do I make an LLC to operate it under? Apologies for this extremely poorly written question, basically I want to be both legal, and I want to make sure nobody can just rip my idea or name(s). (I'm sure this will be more concise as questions here are asked) Thanks
