  • Is a control's OnInit called even when attaching it during parent's OnPreRender?

    My original understanding was that the asp.net page lifecycle is run once for all pages and controls under normal circumstances. When I attached a control during a container's OnPreRender, I encountered a situation where the control's OnInit was not called. OK, I considered that a bug in my code and fixed as such, by attaching the control earlier. But just today, I encountered a situation where OnInit for a control seems to be called after the normal OnInit has been done for everyone else. See stack below. It seems that during the page's PreRender, the control's OnInit is called as it is being dynamically added. So I just want to confirm exactly what ASP.NET's behavior is? Does it actually keep track of the stage of each control's lifecycle, and upon adding a new control, it will run from the very beginning?   • SQL Server devs–what source control system do you use, if any? (answer and maybe win free stuff)

    Recently I noticed a tweet from notable SQL Server author and community dude-at-large Steve Jones in which he asked how many SQL Server developers were putting their SQL Server source code (i.e. DDL) under source control (I’m paraphrasing because I can’t remember the exact tweet and Twitter’s search functionality is useless). The question surprised me slightly as I thought a more pertinent question would be “how many SQL Server developers are not using source control?” because I have been doing just that for many years now and I simply assumed that use of source control is a given in this day and age. Then I started thinking about it. “Perhaps I’m wrong” I pondered, “perhaps the SQL Server folks that do use source control in their day-to-day jobs are in the minority”. So, dear reader, I’m interested to know a little bit more about your use of source control. Are you putting your SQL Server code into a source control system? If so, what source control server software (e.g. TFS, Git, SVN, Mercurial, SourceSafe, Perforce) are you using? What source control client software are you using (e.g. TFS Team Explorer, Tortoise, Red Gate SQL Source Control, Red Gate SQL Connect, Git Bash, etc…)? Why did you make those particular software choices? Any interesting anecdotes to share in regard to your use of source control and SQL Server? To encourage you to contribute I have five pairs of licenses for Red Gate SQL Source Control and Red Gate SQL Connect to give away to what I consider to be the five best replies (“best” is totally subjective of course but this is my blog so my decision is final ), if you want to be considered don’t forget to leave contact details; email address, Twitter handle or similar will do. To start you off and to perhaps get the brain cells whirring, here are my answers to the questions above: Are you putting your SQL Server code into a source control system? As I think I’ve already said…yes. Always. If so, what source control server software (e.g. TFS, Git, SVN, Mercurial, SourceSafe, Perforce) are you using? I move around a lot between many clients so it changes on a fairly regular basis; my current client uses Team Foundation Server (aka TFS) and as part of a separate project is trialing the use of Team Foundation Service. I have used SVN extensively in the past which I am a fan of (I generally prefer it to TFS) and am trying to get my head around Git by using it for ObjectStorageHelper. What source control client software are you using (e.g. TFS Team Explorer, Tortoise, Red Gate SQL Source Control, Red Gate SQL Connect, Git Bash, etc…)? On my current project, Team Explorer. In the past I have used Tortoise to connect to SVN. Why did you make those particular software choices? I generally use whatever the client uses and given that I work with SQL Server I find that the majority of my clients use TFS, I guess simply because they are Microsoft development shops. Any interesting anecdotes to share in regard to your use of source control and SQL Server? Not an anecdote as such but I am going to share some frustrations about TFS. In many ways TFS is a great product because it integrates many separate functions (source control, work item tracking, build agents) into one whole and I’m firmly of the opinion that that is a good thing if for no reason other than being able to associate your check-ins with a work-item. However, like many people there are aspects to TFS source control that annoy me day-in, day-out. Chief among them has to be the fact that it uses a file’s read-only property to determine if a file should be checked-out or not and, if it determines that it should, it will happily do that check-out on your behalf without you even asking it to. I didn’t realise how ridiculous this was until I first used SVN about three years ago – with SVN you make any changes you wish and then use your source control client to determine which files have changed and thus be checked-in; the notion of “check-out” doesn’t even exist. That sounds like a small thing but you don’t realise how liberating it is until you actually start working that way. Hoping to hear some more anecdotes and opinions in the comments.   • VPN - Remote Desktop Connection

    I've set up a VPN connection to my work network on my home PC - running Windows 7 It connects fine. Once connected, I can ping machines that are on my work network using my home pc, however, if I try to RDP to them, it doesn't connect... It seems to initially connect, It asks me for the logon user / password, and when I set them, and click OK, it gets stuck on a screen saying: "Securing Remote Connection" Eventually it pops up saying "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem persists, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator" I know this computer is configured to allow remote connections etc... (and I've tried it with several different machines on the remote network) Any ideas what i've set wrong?

    We recently purchased EMCO Remote Installer to deploy MSI packages we're creating. We are still (unfortunately) in an NT4 domain, and when I try to deploy a package using domain's administrator credentials I'm getting "access denied". Under the "requirements for remote computers" section on the EMCO website (http://www.emco.is/products/remote-installer/requirements.php), it says that it requires remote machines to have: * Started services: Computer Browser, Remote Registry * File and Printer sharing enabled * Windows Installer 3.1 * TCP ports opened: 135, 139, 445 * UDP ports opened: 137, 138 Is there any way of scripting these changes? If so, could someone get me started? I have about 200 machines I need to get this working with. Thanks for all your help!!

    I tried to start Routing and Remote Access Service but I've got an error says the dependency service or group failed to start then I tried to start Remote Access Connection Manager (one of RRAS's dependencies) and the error way same. then I tried to start The Secure Socket Tuning Protocol Service but there was an error says that the the service started then stopped! the errors form event log is here: The Remote Access Connection Manager service depends on the Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service service which failed to start because of the following error: The operation completed successfully. The Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service service entered the stopped state. The Routing and Remote Access service depends on the Remote Access Connection Manager service which failed to start because of the following error: The dependency service or group failed to start. sort by date Does anyone know how can I resolve the problem?

  • Unable to connect to a remote SQL Server Instance over a VPN

    I'm running SQL Server 2005 on two different servers running Win XP. The two servers are in different physical locations and are connected via a dedecated point to point data link in a virtual private network(VPN). Im only able to connect to the remote instance of SQL Server by specifying the IP address on the server name property. If I provide the actual server name say 'ServerA', then I get an error message. Everything works fine except configuring replication at the subscriber level, which requires the actual name of the instance, not an IP address or alias. I have already configured both instances on allow remote connections and im running the SQL Server Browser. How do I connect to the remote instance by providing the instance name? Alternatively how I configure subscription to a remote publisher without supplying the remote instance name?

  • Can not RDP to Win 2003 box or initiate remote restart

    I've got a Windows 2003 server that's at my remote data center. This morning I tried to connect to it via RDP, but the connection fails with the following error: This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator. I have also trying issuing a remote shutdown/restart command using the "shutdown -i" command from my local system. No error is reported, however the system does not reboot. This server runs SQL Server 2005 and it is still fully operational and responsive to queries. I can also remotely connect to the services control panel of the remote system. Is there anything that I can try to regain control of the system, short of having an operator in the data center do a hard reboot on the server for me?

  • Mount remote drive by port forwarding

    I have a windows 7 computer at home and a remote windows XP machine with an external USB drive attached to it. I would like to be able to copy files to and from home/the remote USB drive. The problem is that the only way of contacting the work computer is by first sshing into a different remote linux machine as there is a firewall that prevents direct internet connection. I can see two possible solutions but I don't know how to do them. Set up winscp using ssh port forwarding via the linux box so that I can copy to and from the two windows machines. I assume that I would need to run an ssh server on the XP machine as well to do this? Mounting the remote USB drive on the remote windows machine from the home XP machine via ssh port forwarding again via the linux box. Does anyone know how to do either solution?

  • EHome IR receiver and Ubuntu 13 - any one have this working?

    I have a "generic" USB IR receiver I purchased off of Ebay to make my life a little easier with XBMC on my Ubuntu box. I am currently running 13.10 and have never tried nor have any knowledge of IR in Ubuntu. I know of lirc, and I know a lot of it is now included in the kernel. My understanding is that lirc in basic terms maps pulses from an remote control to functions - like keyboard or mouse clicks.   • Should I put my output files in source control?

    I've been asked to put every single file in my project under source control, including the database file (not the schema, the complete file). This seems wrong to me, but I can't explain it. Every resource I find about source control tells me not to put generated output files in a source control system. And I understand, it's not "source" files. However, I've been presented with the following reasoning: Who cares? We have plenty of bandwidth. I don't mind having to resolve a conflict each time I get the latest revision, it's just one click It's so much more convenient than having to think about good ignore files Also, if I have to add an external DLL file in the bin folder now, I can't forget to put it in source control, as the bin folder is not being ignored now. The simple solution for the last bullet-point is to add the file in a libraries folder and reference it from the project. Please explain if and why putting generated output files under source control is wrong.

    I am attempting to build and redeploy to a remote tomcat 7 server using the cargo-maven plugin. I have been able to successfully deploy to the remote server, but all other actions fail. And more beneficial, how would you go about promoting change in the business to a new source control system? A few years ago I developed using a source control system called Synergy. There were two Synergy experts in the company that constantly had to help the developers do check-ins/outs and merges were especially difficult. What would be your steps of migrating to a better source control. Would you host everything internally or pay for services such as github?

  • User receives group membership error to terminal server even though has rights

By default, members of the Remote Desktop Users group have this right. If you are not a member of the Remote Desktop Users group or another group that has this right, or if the Remote Desktop User group does not have this right, you must be granted this right manually. Only as of today a particular user began receiving this message for a second terminal server they use; otherwise, they have never had any problems authenticating into this server. We have no restrictions on simultaneous and multiple logins. On each terminal server, we have a group and security group like "_Users" locally in the Builtin\Remote Desktop Users group. For this particular user, on this particular terminal server we have locally given him Administrator, Remote Desktop Users, and Users membership; in AD we have given him DOMAIN\Administrator, Builtin\Remote Desktop Users, DOMAIN\_Users. It still gives us that error message. We gave him membership to another terminal server (random) by simply making him member of another DOMAIN\_Users group -- successfully able to login to that random terminal server. So, from scratch we created an AD account 'dummy' (username) with only Domain Users membership. Tried to login to this particular server, no success. So I added 'dummy' to DOMAIN\_Users group, and then was successfully able to login. Other users from this user's department are able to login to this particular server just fine as well. We checked the Security logs on this particular server, and while it is logging everything, the only thing it appears to not log are these failed login attempts from this particular user who receives this error message. We have tried rebooting the server, and the user is still receiving that error message.

  • How to use my computer to control a lamp?

    I've been researching computer automation systems, but everything I've found has been overkill for what I'm interested in. Can anyone help me control a lamp that is on my desk, plugged in the wall beneath the desk, with my computer (also on the desk, usually). What got me thinking is that I have the lamp plugged into a Belkin extension cord/surge protector that came with a wireless switch that toggles the power going to 6 of the eight sockets. Can I somehow hook my computer into this? I'm not too afraid to get into some wiring type thing, but do have a somewhat limited budget. It'd also be cool to get a dimmer in the loop too. thanks aha. after more research, i have realized what i'm looking for is instructions for a DIY version of this that won't look so ugly, and that i can build a UI for rather than shortcuts.
