  Two excellent results of SOLID development ideology are - Legibility - Extensibility over the life of a project (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid_(object-oriented_design) Although SOLID is a set of language-agnostic design ideas, some languages inherently support these ideas better than others. Out-of-the-box or after various customizations, in your opinion which language is best-suited to be both easily readable and easy to extend functionality in? Some definitions to pre-empt biases and flamewars: Legibility: amount of thinking done to understand the code proportional to the amount of code: (amount_think-energy / amount_code) is fairly constant and as low as possible in the optimal case. Extensibility: Addition of X amount of functionality requires a change in code or code additions in proportion to X (amount_added_functionality / amount_added_code) is fairly constant and as high as possible in the optimal case.   Could someone please explain the difference in how the 2 snippets of code are handled below? They definitely compile to different assembly code, but I'm trying to understand how the code might act differently. I understand that string literals are thrown into read only memory and are effectively static, but how does that differ from the explicit static below? struct Obj1 { void Foo() { const char* str( "hello" ); } }; and struct Obj2 { void Bar() { static const char* str( "hello" ); } };

  Often I find some really cool javascript one liners that you can copy and paste into your browser address bar in order to get some fancy effects or even useful ones. This, for example, will let you edit anything on the page. javascript:document.body.contentEditable='true'; document.designMode='on'; void 0 What is your favorite? EDIT: I know that technically all these snippets are just javascript scripts that gets evaluated by the browser as if they were defined in the page. I also know that many browsers have got extensions to let you run javascript code (also letting you store scripts somewhere, providing a good editor etc etc). However that's not so practical; I'm not a javascript developer, haven't got firebug installed, and I can't install it anywhere I go. My idea idea is that of collecting the best "mini-scripts" that whoever can just copy and paste in his browser without the need of installing extensions and stuff.

• WYSIWYG-editor with "add custom html feature" and secure (validated) html output?

  I've been looking into some of the WYSIWYG editors (TinyMCE, FCKEditor, etc.) and they all seem to offer a lot of options. However, one vital feature that seems to lack is a simple "add custom html" option which would allow the user to input any of these embed-snippets you find all around the web these days, for example a youtube video. This is different than a "edit html/source" feature as that requires actual knowledge of html and there is the risk of the user writing invalid code. Another issue that I couldn't find much about is the output html. How would I make sure that this output causes no security invulnerabilities? Even when the user has the ability to add his own html? So, basically, is there an open source WYSIWYG editor which covers these 2 features?

  My impression of Python from the short time I've been developing with it is that it's incredible powerful and flexible, but I can't help but feel like "with great power comes great responsibility." So while I've read numerous blog posts about simple and elegant Python snippets that solve a problems, I wonder if there are design patterns or abuses of Python language features that, once built into an application or library, cause the code to be incredibly brittle and near impossible to refactor. So the question is basically what are the most frustrating, but somewhat common, Python "hacks" or language feature abuses that someone can introduce that will cause nightmares for future maintainers of that code?

  RegEx is powerful - it is tru but I have a little - query for you I want to parse out the FUNCTIONS from some old code in JS...however - I am RegEx handicapped (mentally deficient in grasping the subtleties).. the issue that makes me NOT EVEN TRY - is two fold - 1) myVar = function(x){ yadda yadda } AND function myVar(x) { yadda yadda } are found throuout - COLD I write a parser for each? sure - but that seems inefficient... 2) MANY things may reside INSIDE the {} including OTHER sets of {} or other Functions(){} block of text... HELP - does anyone have, or know of some code parsing snippets or examples that will parse out the info I want to collect? Thanks

• Server-side access to Client Browser's Latitude/Longitude using Django.

  Hello, So i am writing a little app that compares a user's position against a database on web-based server written using Django and performs some functions with it. Accessing the browser's geolocation data (in supported browsers ) is fairly trivial using JavaScript. But what is the best way to allow the Django server to access the longitude and latitude variables? Is it best to wrap them up as a JSON object and send to the server via POST? Or is there some easier (Geo)Django-based way to access the Navigator.geolocation browser object. Please forgive a newbie a question like this, but my Google-Fuing only seems to find ways to insert variables into JavaScript via template tag, whereas I need it to work the other way! Any advice or code snippets greatly appreciated. Feel free to talk to me like I am an idiot.

  I have found Design patterns certification at the Brainbehch. I have heard from people who passed it, that there are many Language-specific patterns questions, mostly from Java and C++. I think that this certification can: force me to improve my skills on Object oriented design and design patterns; improve and structure my knowledge of the domain; give real estimate of my knowledge, which is useful issue itself The only confusion I have about this certification, is that I have to learn C++/Java language specific design patterns, while I mostly do PHP development and don't want to switch to C++/Java. I'm familiar with Java & C++ syntax, read lots of books about different subjects with code snippets in this programming languages. I think, that if I pass well all concepts except language specific patterns at certification, it won't be very good, because this concepts will gain quite low results. What would you recommend in this particular circumstance?

  I am building an ASP.NET application. Within each ASPX page, we are outputting inline snippets of HTML that are pulled from static text files. Similar to the example shown here: http://www.dotnetcurry.com/ShowArticle.aspx?ID=331 As in the article, we store the contents of the files in HttpRuntime.Cache with a CacheDependency pointing to the included file. For each cached file, the operating system needs to monitor a file for changes. Is this going to be a potential scalability problem? Does Windows 2008 have a maximum number of file change monitors?

One uses the default value off Hash and the other snippet creates an empty array for the key before it'll be accessed. • Scoping two models on approved

  I have three models (Book,Snippet,User) and I'd like to create a scope for where(:approved = true) I'm doing this so I can use the merit gem to define ranking based on count of approved. I'm thinking that writing this as a scope might be to complex but I don't know as I've just started leaning scopes. I've currently got this in my Book & Snippet Model: scope :approved, -> { where(approved: true) } I've playing around with this in my user model but I don't think it's correct: scope :approved, joins(:books && :snippets) Could anyone help start me off or give me some suggestions on what to read?

• Regexp in iOS to find comments

  I am trying to find and process 'java-style' comments within a string in objective-C. I have a few regex snippets which almost work but I am stuck on one hurdle: different options seem to make the different styles work. For example, I am using this to match: NSArray* matches = [[NSRegularExpression regularExpressionWithPattern:expression options:NSRegularExpressionAnchorsMatchLines error:nil] matchesInString:string options:0 range:searchRange]; The options here allow me successfully find and process single line comments (//) but not multiline (/* */), if I change the option to NSRegularExpressionDotMatchesLineSeparators then I can make multiline work fine but I can't find the 'end' of a single line comment. I suppose really I need dot-matches-line-separators but I need a better way of finding the end of a single line comment? The regexp I have so far are: @"/\\*.*?\\*/" @"//.*$" it's clear to see if dot matches a line separator then the second one (single line) never 'finishes' but how do I fix this? I found some suggestions for single line that were more like: @"(\/\/[^"\n\r]*(?:"[^"\n\r]*"[^"\n\r]*)*[\r\n])" But that doesn't' seem to work at all! Thanks in advance for any pointers.

• PHP/CSS issue, one account has a fine style, the other is weird

  Hello there, I am currently having the above issue, where on a CMS called phpVMS a CSS displaying front page works fine on the first account, but does not on any other user accounts. This only applies to the frontpage, and all of the tags seem to be closed. The top half of the picture is how it should display and how it displays for user GSM1001. The bottom half is for users GSM1002 upwards. I am really puzzled and I'd appreciate any suggestions. I am happy to post snippets of the code here or on jsFiddle if you require to see it. • How do I use a custom select statement in Hibernate using the HibernateDaoSupport class

  I am trying to write a custom select statement in Hibernate using the getHibernateTemplate() method. I am having problems with the resulting mapping. Example Code: List<User> users = getHibernateTemplate().find("Select user, sysdate as latestPost from User as user"); for (User user : users) { assertNotNull(users.name); } The goal of the above line is to eventually have a join where I get the max(date) of posts made by the user. The problem I am having is that the resulting users list is not a list of User objects and I get a class cast exception. Hopefully that is enough code. It is a greatly simplified version of my problem and a combination of snippets from various parts of my application.

• Send Ctrl+Up to a window

  I'm trying to send messages to a window that says Ctrl and Up-arrow has been pressed. I've got the basics down, I can send presses of the space key that registeres fine. • What tools do people use to make programming tutorial videos?

  Hi folks, I'm wanting to make some yee-run-o-the-mill tutorial video's about some programming concepts and stuff i've been doing. Nothing special ... lots of peeps been doing it. What tools are people using to record and edit these videos? What resolutions / fonts / sizes do people generally use/set? The only tool I've had experience with is Camtasia - and i didn't mind it. But i've seen vid's (or live demo's) where people zoom in to code sections.. how do they do that? For final editing, do most people just do some simple power point presentation with some video snippets mashed in. cheers!

• File/module structure in Python

  So I'm just getting started with Python, and currently working my way through diveintopython.org. The code examples are nice, but the vast majority of them are little four-line snippets, and I want to see a little more of the big picture. As I understand it--and correct me if I'm wrong--each '.py' file becomes a "module", and a group of modules in a directory becomes a "package" (at least, it does if I create a __init__.py file in that directory). What is it if I don't have a __init__.py file? So what does each "module" file look like? Do I generally define only one class in the file? Does anything else go in that file besides the class definition and maybe a handful of import commands?
