• Centos 6.5 -- backported upgrades/php.ini directives included in php 5.3.3

  PHP 5.3.3 is the latest version of PHP available with the official CentOS 6.5 repos. As most of you know, calling it version '5.3.3' is slightly deceptive because critical bug fixes are actually back ported into version 5.3.3, so in effect 'version 5.3.3' does get upgraded now and then. My question is: aside from manually toggling directives in php.ini, how can you tell which new directives, that were implemented in, and officially supported by, later versions of PHP, are also available in CentOS 6.5's backported PHP 5.3.3? For example, max_input_vars (http://php.net/manual/en/info.configuration.php#ini.max-input-vars) has been available since PHP 5.3.9. IS there an easy way to tell whether CentOS included this in a backported upgrade to 5.3.3? Thanks!

• Screenshot shows black area with dual monitors on Ubuntu

  When using the built-in window screenshot function on Ubuntu (alt-printscreen) with dual monitors, a black rectangle covers about the top third of the captured window (or that area is not captured). When capturing the entire screen (printscreen), the left monitor shows the same size rectangle, but it doesn't cover the window, but pushes it down. It's as if the capture is using the smaller monitor's dimensions, and is not aware of the larger monitor. • Ubuntu: Take actions when system temperature gets too high

  One of the CPU fans on my Compaq Presario laptop running Ubuntu 9.10 seems to have bit the dust. The fan is deep within the case and I intend to replace the laptop in the next 6 months so it's not worth replacing it. I have the laptop on a cooling pad and most of the time the system is fine, CPU temps around 90°-110°F. Occasionally, however, I'm seeing random lockups which I believe is due to the system overheating. How can I configure the system to: Lower the CPU speed when the temperature reaches a certain level? (I.E. 110°F) Shutdown the system when the tempature reaches a critical level? (And what would that be? 130°?)

• Winxp system context menus blank after last security update

  Because of a CERT advisory of several out-of-band security updates released by MS I did a Critical Updates pass on my WinXP Pro SP3 machine. I now have the situation where it seems that all of my WinXP-generated menus come up with all items black. If I wave the cursor over the menu, the items will update as they become active (go blue) and then update correctly (to black-text-on-white-background) as they go non-active. Separators (which never get a hover event) stay black. App-level context menus seem to work fine (Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.) with the exception of Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer, which both exhibit this behavior on both their context menus and on their menu bar drop down menus. I'm assuming that's true because they are all using the same library code. Thoughts? Fixes? Help!

• ML 350 additional SATA RAID controller (mirror only)

  I have a Proliant ML350 G8 with two SAS raid arrays currently set up - thereby maxing the default P420i raid controller. I need to set up a large video dump space in addition to this existing set-up (for non backed up, non-critical, temporary storage). I had planned to just add a 2TB SATA disk and plug it into the motherboard. However I it occurred to me the motherboard might have built-in mirror RAID support? Therefore I could use two SATA disks and have some semblance of redundancy. Is this possible? Or would I need to get a cheap raid card? Any recommendations?

• Running .net application over a network

  Hello, I need some advice please. I need to enable a .Net application to run over a network share, the problem is that this will be on clients network shares and so the path will not be identical. I've had a quick look at ClickOnce and the publish options in VS2008 but it wants a specific network share location - and I'm assuming this location gets stored somewhere when it does its thing. At the moment the job is being done with a old VB6 application and so gets around all these security issues, but that application is poorly written and almost impossible to maintain so it really needs to go. Is it possible for the domain controller to be set up to allow this specific .Net application to execute? Any other options would be welcomed as I want to get this little application is very business critical. I aught to say that the client networks are schools, and thus are often quite locked down as are the client machines, so manually adding exceptions to each client machine is a big no no. Marlon

• Mozilla Thunderbird 3.0.10: Messages are being sent back to me

  When I send an email and I get a response, more often than not, in the To: is my email address. However, my email address also ends up in the From: column.The reply-from address is nowhere to be found;so I don't have any address with which I can send my reply, as both of them have just my email address. What am I doing wrong here? Is there some set-up in my Tools Options which is incorrect? The set-up in Options is pretty difficult to understand and it doesn't offer any to or reply-from choices. This is critical because I just cannot answer my emails because there is no one I can send a reply to.

• Natively boot Virtualbox Image

  I am faced with a Windows hardware/software problem left over from another person. It's on me to resolve. It's a mission critical setup. The situation is: I've got a physical server machine with: -Disk C:\ (one disk) containing a basic install of Windows Server 2008 R2, formerly Win Vista Pro, now gone. -Disk D:\ (software Raid) containing a VirtualBox disk image of a configured Windows Server 2008 R2 running SQL Server R2 among others. What shall I do now? Migrate all the stuff from the configured VM to the basic but natively installed C:\ Windows Server 2008 R2 (with the possibility of breaking stuff)? Or, Setting up the machine to "natively boot" the VM with the help of bcdedit.exe (something I've read about, what I've never done, what I don't know of if it works, if it hits performance, or if it is stable for production) For me, being old skool, I am in the process of de-virtualising everything (option 1). But I'd be happy if someone suggests I am ok to go down the "natively boot" route.

We have also set passive mode and "resume transfer" functionality seems currently broken with this secure file transport server...so we need to download the file in one go. What FTPS clients might meet our needs?

• Best way to 'harden' embedded ext4 file server against unexpected loss of power?

  Hi all, First, a little background: my company makes an audio streaming device that is a headless, rack-mounted Linux box with a couple of SSDs attached. Each SSD is formatted with ext4. The users can connect to the system using Samba/CIFS to upload new audio files or access existing ones. There is also custom software for streaming out audio over the network. This is all fine. The only problem is that the users are audio people, not computer people, and see the system as a 'black box', not as a computer. Which means that at the end of the day, they aren't going to ssh in to the box and enter "/sbin/shutdown -h"; they are just going to cut power to the rack and leave, and expect things to still work properly the next day. Since ext4 has journalling, journal checksumming, etc, this mostly works. The only time it doesn't work is when someone uploads a new file via Samba and then cuts power to the system before the uploaded data has been fully flushed to the disk. In that case, they come in the next day and find that their new file has been truncated or is missing entirely, and are unhappy. My question is, what is the best way to avoid this problem? Is there a way to get smbd to call "sync" at the end of every upload? (Performance on uploads isn't so important, since they only happen occasionally). Or is there a way to tell ext4 to automatically flush within a few seconds of any change to a file? (Again, performance can be sacrificed for safety here) Should I set a particular write-ordering mode, activate barriers, etc?

• Can I put /tmp and /var/log in a ramdisk on OS X?

  For non-critical Linux systems, I often move things /tmp and /var/log to tmpfs to save on some disk writing. I've been doing this for a year or so and if I ever need the logs across reboots, I just comment out a line in /etc/fstab and then start debugging. In any case, I would like to do the same thing on OS X. I've seen posts on creating a ramdisk for OS X, but I'm looking for a more permanent solution. I always want /tmp and /var/log mounted in a ramdisk, with the ability to turn that off with a bit of cmdline editing in vi if I have to.

• Viability of Apache (MPM Worker), FastCGI PHP 4/5.2/5.3, and MySQL 5

  My server will be hosting numerous PHP web applications ranging from Joomla, Drupal, and some legacy (read: PHP4) and other custom-built code inherited from clients. This will be a development machine used by a dozen or so web developers and issues like fluctuating loads or particularly high load expectations are not important. Now, my question: are there any concerns I should know about when using Apache w/ MPM Worker, PHP 4/PHP 5.2/PHP 5.3 (all via FastCGI), and MySQL 5 (with a query cache of 64MB)? I have not tested the various applications extensively and I have only recently learned how to install PHP and utilize it via FastCGI (rather than mod_php, which in this case seemed impossible (considering the multiple versions of PHP and the desire to use MPM Worker over MPM Prefork)). I have come to understand that there could be concerns regarding XCache and APC, namely non-thread-safety issues where data becomes corrupted and the capability to use MPM Worker becomes null and void. Is this a valid concern? I have been using my personal testing server (running Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04 in VirtualBox) which has 2GB of RAM available to it. • Best way to Duplicate a Laptop's Hard Drive One-to-One

  I have a Lenovo X61 Tablet computer, with a plain SATA drive inside. I have windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting on the computer. I want to back up both of these OS's, and their special partitions (Windows 7 has one, and of course the Linux Swap). I want a one-to-one backup, all of my mission critical data is already backed up, but I would like to get a snapshot, and store it on a larger file server at home for quick recovery. What is the best approach to do this?

• Virtual box lost files

  I have been running Virtual Box on a Macbook Pro for a year or more, with an old version of Windows XP running on the virtual machine. Recently my Mac battery dies completely and I had left VB / Windows running. When I re-started the Mac, VB would not load. I reinstalled a recent download of VB from a DMG file I had stored. Now VB starts but when I try to start the virtual machine I get the following message, Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows XP. Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_WRITE_NON_SYS_GROUP). Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} I have been backing up the MAC using Time Machine and have backups going back months. I really need to access the windows files as they have my Accounts and other business critical stuff. Any ideas please, or does anyone know where I can get some support for this combination of hardware / software, apologies I am a novice in this area. Thanks in advance.

• 8007064c(2011) and 80280007(2009) persistant after all known repairs

  I'm on Windows 7 Home x64, and have ran into a major issue with Live Messenger(which I use daily). I have full offline installers for both 2011 and the last Wave 3 2009(14.0.8117.0416) Suites. Both give the following errors: Live Essentials 2011 Offline installer(official): An unknown error occured. Error:0x8007064c Source WLXSuite WL 2009 offline installer(official): You already have a more recent version of Windows Live. Error: OnCatalogResult:0x80280007 Next steps: If you want to install this older version, first uninstall any later versions that are on your computer. Get help with this error The 2011 installer also says it is updating messenger, I don't select anything else. Then last 2009 installer says their is a newer version that needs uninstalled even after the following procedures. MS Help pages provided all basically lead to using uninstall from control panel. Which I've uninstalled all Live components including watcom safety scanner and portable SQL from. I've followed online instructions for manually deleting folders from Program Files(x86), Appdata, and some others under \User\All Users and the one for the one account on the machine. I've used CCcleaner 3.01, ASC 3.7.3 and Beta 4 with deep scan along with deleting folders, and checked their uninstallers for Live components too, and none were there. wlmuninstaller.exe tool reports nothing, but after a failed install it finds something, but failes to clean it under all user admin privilege. The same errors still occur after all of that. Google searching I see people on forums suggesting reinstalling the OS cause MS doesn't even know how to fix this, but I'm hoping someone here can help. NOTE: I don't have System Restore or any other state freeze utilities going, and I don't have any real time AV going(I sometime scan with defender, anti rootkits, and online scanners). Is there any foss software, that could provide next features? 1. unlimited (at least 5) subtask levels 2. easy way to complete tasks (like in todoist) 3. easy to edit tasks 4. php based (as i want to host it on my server) 5. due dates (including recurring) 6. labels, colors, etc will be good, but not critical PS: i already checked several similar questions, including Which GTD tool/webservice do you recommend?   hi. sorry to have to ask such a basic question!! i've got fedora 13, trying to figure out how to change the "I Beam" pointer. earlier, i had a "thin" "I Beam" pointer in my gedit/term windows. now, I have a "thicker/shadow" kind of "I Beam" pointer when i move the mouse over the gedit/term windows. obviously, i've made some change, but i can't figure out what I changed, or where this attribute is set. i've checked google/irc, as well as looked through the "system-preferences-appearance" with no luck.. i saw the customize part of the gui, and could resize the "arrow" but nothing for the "I-Beam". this isn't critical, but it is anoying!! any thoughts/pointers would be helpful. thanks

  I want to set up a virtual hosting server on Linux/Apache2.2 that allows multiple users to set up multiple website domains as would be appropriate for commercial shared hosting. I have seen examples (from my then perspective as a shared hosting customer) that allow users to store their web files in their user home directory with directories to correspond to the virtual host domain, e.g.: /home/user1/www/example1.com /home/user2/www/example2.com instead of using /var/www Questions: How would you configure this in your Apache configuration files? (Don't worry about DNS) Is this the best way to manage multiple virtual hosts? Are there others? What safety or security issues do you think I should be aware of in doing this? Many thanks, folks. When that file changes, they want to be able to push out the changes to all servers that use it with a minimal effort. Approaches that have been considered: Centralized file server (drawback: if the file server or the network connection to the file server goes down, the servers have no access to the critical file) Subversion client on each server (drawback: using a source control tool in production, added complexity) Store an individual copy of the file on each server (drawback: changing the file contents involves making changes on many different servers) Update Can I use DFS to do this?
