• IE9 RC fixed the “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” error when running an ASP.NET application in Visual Studio

  One of the obstacles ASP.NET developers faced in using the Internet Explorer 9 Beta was the dreaded “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” error when running an ASP.NET application in Visual Studio. In the bug information on Connect (issue 601047), Eric Lawrence said that the problem was due to “caused by failure to failover from IPv6 to IPv4 when the connection is local.” Robert MacLean gives some more information as what was going wrong: “The problem is Windows, especially since it assumes IPv6 is better than IPv4. Note […] that when you ping localhost you get an IPv6 address. So what appears to be happening is when IE9 tries to go to localhost it uses IPv6, and the ASP.NET Development Server is IPv4 only and so nothing loads and we get the error.” The Simple Fix - Install IE 9 RC Internet Explorer 9 RC fixes this bug, so if you had tried IE 9 Beta and stopped using it due to problems with ASP.NET development, install the RC. The Workaround in IE 9 Beta If you're stuck on IE 9 Beta for some reason, you can follow Robert's workaround, which involves a one character edit to your hosts file. I've been using it for months, and it works great. Open notepad (running as administrator) and edit the hosts file (found in %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc) Remove the # comment character before the line starting with 127.0.0.1 Save the file - if you have problems saving, it's probably because you weren't running as administrator When you're done, your hosts file will end with the following lines (assuming you were using a default hosts file setup beforehand): # localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.     127.0.0.1       localhost #    ::1             localhost Note: more information on editing your hosts file here. This causes Windows to default to IPv4 when resolving localhost, which will point to 127.0.0.1, which is right where Cassini - I mean the ASP.NET Web Development Server - is waiting for it.

• Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

  I have mailserver configure using dovecot+postfix+mysql and it was runnig fine in the server(Ubuntu Server). But during last week it stopped working correctly. It doesn't send email. When I try to telnet localhost smtp I'm connecting successfully but when I do mail from:<[email protected]> and hit Enter it hangs on, nothing happen. Having reviewed /var/log/mail.log file I've found out that probably(99%) the problem is on postfix when it is trying to connect to MySQL server. If you see the log file given below you can see that it says Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2). • jackd fails to start

  I'm trying to have a setup where JACK interfaces directly to ALSA and pulseaudio communicates to JACK. This setup worked OK (I had to manually start things a few times) but as I understood the Ubuntu daemon setup and perfected things jackd stopped working completely. I'm running 10.10. If I run something through ALSA I get sound no problem. However, when I run jack with realtime: /usr/bin/jackd -v -R -ch -Z -t2000 -d alsa -P I get the following error: jackd watchdog: timeout - killing jackd Conversely, if I run without realtime: /usr/bin/jackd -v -r -ch -Z -t2000 -d alsa -P I get: ALSA: poll time out, polled for 32032138 usecs DRIVER NT: could not run driver cycle Jack was working just fine before I made these changes; while I don't have an exact copy of my original configuration I recall running the bare minimum of options worked fine. I've seen some articles saying the problem is with ALSA capture. In fact, I tried enabling capture in alsamixer once and everything worked! On reboot that success was not repeated and I haven't been able to get jack working since. That shouldn't matter because specifying -P should obviate any capture issues. Short summary: I can't get jackd to work under any circumstances (unless I specify -d dummy). Sound works with other programs with ALSA, but when I run JACK the daemon opens the card but times out and dies. JACK worked fine before but I can't figure out what changed (or where to even look). I should mention I am running with CPU speed throttling on, but I'm using HPET to mitigate this (and I've run jack with no issue before). Thanks!

• xubuntu 12.04 totally refuses to boot after install with wubi on old computer. any tips or suggestions on things i can do to fix this problem?

  so, i downloaded xubuntu 12.04 32-bit (not alt version) from the xubuntu.org website and placed the .zip into a folder named XUBUNTU on my desktop. i then extracted the files to that folder and ran wubi. i selected xubuntu from the drop down and clicked install. i let it do its thing and then chose the option to reboot when prompted. this is when i went to my girlfriends house for the day and left my laptop (dell latitude 120L) to finish the install. i came back home (about 8 hours later) to find my computer on the windows 7 log in screen when i rebooted my computer once more. i booted xubuntu just fine and things seemed to work perfectly. i turned off the pc and went to bed. next morning i booted xubuntu again without problems. i rebooted and went to windows, then next time i tried booting xubuntu in the middle of the splash screen it went black and the cpu light stopped blinking. i force shut down the computer and tried booting again when the same thing happened (instead of going black the splash just froze). i went back to windows and uninstalled and reintalled the os and havent beej able to boot it since. i even tried booting lubuntu with the same problem. please help!

• Platform Builder: Removing the Version Information from the Desktop

  The question of how to remove the version information from the desktop has been around for a long time. It came up again today. The question is about the string displayed on the desktop that looks like one of these, depending on the OS verison: Windows Embedded CE v6.00 (Build xxxx on xxxx) Microsoft Windows CE v5.00 (Build xxxx on xxxx) Microsoft Windows CE .NET v4.20 (Build xxxx on xxxx) I have looked into this in the past, but never really had a definitive answer. I have an answer now. The short answer is that the version information is displayed if the code is built without SHIP_BUILD defined.  I have to be honest, I have given this answer in the newsgroups in the past, but I still had questions. My questions have come from different build machines giving different results.   I have noticed that some engineer’s workstations would have the version information displayed, while others did not. I always stopped short of spending time investigating further because our release build machines never resulted in the version information being displayed. But, we do not typically define SHIP_BUILD for our releases because our customers want or need the debug output. So today I dug further into the question. The answer is actually quite simple. Microsoft builds the retail shell libraries with SHIP_BUILD defined and releases the libraries with Platform Builder. Normally the source code does not need to be built during Sysgen, so the libraries that Microsoft delivered are linked to create the Explorer shell. So typically the Explorer shell displays the version information for debug builds, but does not for retail builds. The trouble comes when the source code is forced to be rebuilt for a retail build. This might happen if an engineer uses “Build and Sysgen” or builds the Public\Shell folder from the command line with the clean flag. I am not sure if Build and Sysgen will cause the problem or not – I have never used Build and Sysgen and I strongly advise against using it (see Platform Builder: Don’t use Build and Sysgen) Copyright © 2010 – Bruce Eitman All Rights Reserved

• unable to load nvidia(bumblebee) in ubuntu 14.04 (only nouveau loads)

  Bumblebee stopped working on my system after upgrading to stable version of Ubuntu 14.04. • Undeploying Apps Running JDev 11g WLS

  Guest post from Jeanne Waldman:I was running my application in JDeveloper when I noticed log messages in the console for a different application, let's call it OldApp. I stopped and started the my application server, the WLS server, re-ran my application, and still I'd see messages for OldApp. I shut down JDeveloper, restarted, and still when I ran my application, I'd see the OldApp's messages   Well, it turns out that at some point in time the OldApp was not properly undeployed. To really stop OldApp, I had to:   Go to http://127.0.0.1:7101/console.   This deployed the console app where you configure WLS. By default the login credentials are:   username: weblogic password: weblogic1 I clicked on Deployments and I saw that OldApp was still running. I selected the checkbox next to OldApp and clicked on the Stop -> Force Stop Now.  Now when I run my application, I do not see the OldApp log messages.

• sound stops working after a while in ubuntu 12.10

  i did a clean install on ubuntu 12.10. Everything seemed fine at first including sound but after a while it stopped working. To get is back i have to restart it, sometimes even more than once. • MySQL Workbench on Ubuntu 12.04 doesn't starts after latest (Jun12) updates

  MySQL workbench was working fine till today. I installed the regular updates and now its just doesnt starts. When started its just shows the 'opening screen' and nothing happens. I tried re-installing it from synaptic but no luck. I use it all the time and now suffering a lot. Any help will be appreciated. When run from terminal with: mysql-workbench --log-level=debug3 --verbose It gives a long log. • Unable to install updates on 14.04 LTS

  I have been getting update notifications for a few weeks now but whenever I attempt to install them I get this message; The upgrade needs a total of 74.6 M free space on disk '/boot'. Please free at least an additional 29.8 M of disk space on '/boot'. Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using 'sudo apt-get clean'. First of all I don't have permission to access /boot (don't know why as its a standalone machine and i'm the only user). Secondly, I emptied the trash; Thirdly, I launched Terminal and entered sudo apt-get clean I was a asked for a sudo password. I entered my system password. Re-entered sudo apt-get clean. The cursor stopped blinking - I assumed it was doing it's "thing". I let it go for about 10 minutes then exited Terminal. Tried to install the updates but just got the same message. Is there something i'm ignorant of? • How should code reviews be Carried Out?

  My previous question has to do with how to advance code reviews among the developers. Here I am interested in how a code review session should be carried out, so that both the reviewer and reviewed are feeling comfortable with it. I have done some code reviews before and the experience has been very unpleasant. My previous manager would come to us --on an ad hoc basis-- and tell us to explain our code to him. Since he wasn't very familiar with the code base, whenever he would ask me to explain my code, I'd find myself spending a huge amount of time explaining the most basic structure of my code. As a result, each review would last much too long, and the process would leave both of us exhausted. Once I was done explaining my work, he would continue by raising issues with it. Most of the issues he raised were cosmetic in nature ( e.g, don't use region for this code block, change the variable name from xxx to yyy even though the later makes even less sense, and so on). After trying this process for few rounds, we found the review session didn't derive much benefits for either of us, and we stopped. How would you go about making each code review a natural, enjoyable, thought stimulating, bug-fixing and mutual-learning experience? Also, how frequently you do your code reviews - as soon as the code is checked in? Do you allocate a fixed time every week to do this? What are the guidelines that you follow during your code reviews?

• Would You Pay for Smartphone OS Updates? [Poll]

  For most phone ecosystems, manufacturer/carrier provided updates are few and far between (or outright nonexistent). To get access to mobile OS updates, would you open your wallet? While iPhone users are used to regular (and free) OS updates, the rest of us our largely left out in the cold. Over at ExtremeTech, Ryan Whitwam argues that we should be willing to pay for smartphone OS updates. The core of his argument is updates cost money and there is no financial incentive for carriers like Sprint and Verizon to turn back to their supplies (say, Motorola or LG) and pay them to provide an update pack for a phone they stopped selling last quarter. He writes: It might be hard to swallow, but the manufacturer of your phone is out to make money for its shareholders. The truth of the matter is that you’re not even the customer; the carrier is. Carriers buy thousands of phones at a time, and unless the carrier wants an update, there won’t be one because there is no one else to pay for it. Imagine if, instead of burning money for little or no benefit, an OEM actually had a financial incentive to port ICS to its older devices. Instantly, the idea of updating phones goes from the customer service back-burner to the forefront of a company’s moneymaking strategy. If the system proves a success, carriers could get involved and have a taste of the update fees as compensation for deploying the update over the air. This is more viable now than ever before thanks to the huge number of Android phones in the market. Samsung, for example, has sold over 30 million Galaxy S II phones since last summer. It has just started rolling Android 4.0 updates out to some countries, but most users are still waiting. If it charged just $10 for access to the update, that would be $150 million if only half of all users wanted an official update. • Auto-mount in fstab no longer working until manually running 'sudo mount -a'

  I have 3 SMB shared drives I need to connect to for work purposes. I had Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick and had all my drives loaded into fstab to be auto-mounted. Everything worked fine for a while but just before I upgraded to 11.04 Natty, the fstab auto-mount stopped working. Unfortunately I don't know what changed I made to my machine or what update installed that made this occur. /etc/fstab {snip} //192.168.7.3/apache_proj/ /home/brett/Desktop/apache smbfs guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 //192.168.7.3/apache_54321/ /home/brett/Desktop/54321 smbfs guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 //freenas.local/shared/ /home/brett/Desktop/shared smbfs guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 //lamp/www/ /home/brett/Desktop/lamp smbfs username={snip},password={snip},rw,iocharset=utf8,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 When the machine boots, I run this command to get them to mount: $ sudo umount /home/brett/Desktop/54321 /home/brett/Desktop/shared /home/brett/Desktop/apache; sudo mount -a [sudo] password for brett: umount: /home/brett/Desktop/54321: not mounted umount: /home/brett/Desktop/shared: not mounted umount: /home/brett/Desktop/apache: not mounted Warning: mapping 'guest' to 'guest,sec=none' Warning: mapping 'guest' to 'guest,sec=none' Warning: mapping 'guest' to 'guest,sec=none' mount error: could not resolve address for lamp: No address associated with hostname (I run that umount as a just-in-case). I looked through dmesg and some error logs and couldn't see why fstab was failing on my mounts. I see that my 'lamp' directive is failing, but that's because the machine is currently down.

• Ubuntu Desktop Environments, No Internet Access

  Windows has been a pain, so I installed Ubuntu 13.10 on my parent's HP Pavilion first with Cinnamon. For the first few days, it worked wonderfully, and then stopped connecting to the internet. I tried using the windows partition and it worked fine. Posted a question about this - no answer yet. Since then, something happened while my parents were using it. The Windows partition was completely erased. I reinstalled Ubuntu and the Cinnamon desktop. Worked great for a day, then same connectivity issue. Since Ubuntu works fine on my netbook without Cinnamon, I thought perhaps this was a Cinnamon issue. Removed Cinnamon and installed LXDE. LXDE, much like Cinnamon, worked well. Then I rebooted and couldn't connect to the internet. I encountered the same issue when using KDE. I would personally like something with a bottom panel as my parents are familiar and comfortable with Windows and can barely use their cell - phones so I do not think Unity will work too well for them. Ubuntu with Unity seems to be the only way to access the internet. My parents mostly use the internet to check email/facebook/watch video. Anyone know how to fix this?

• How much Ruby should I learn before moving to Rails?

  Just a quick question.. I can never get a definitive answer when googling this, either. Some people say you can learn Rails without knowing any Ruby, but at some point you'll run into a brick wall and wish you knew Ruby and will have to go back to learn it..and some say to learn the "basics" of Ruby before learning Rails and it will make your life that much easier.. My current knowledge is low. I'm not a beginner, but I'm not pro, either. I went through the Learn Python The Hard Way online book in about a month, but I stopped once I got to the OOP side of Python (I know booleans, elif/if/else/statements, for loops, while loops, functions) I agree with learning the "basics" of Ruby before learning Rails, but what exactly are the "basics" of Ruby? Would I need to learn the whole OOP side of Ruby before I went on to Rails? Or would I just need to learn the Ruby syntax up to where I learned Python (booleans, elif/if/else/statements, for loops, while loops, functions) before I went on to Rails? Thanks!

• Out of space despite lots of free space remaining

  When upgrading Ubuntu from 11.10 to 12.04 I discovered an unexpected problem. The upgrade was stopped because there wasn't enough free space for the installation. I managed to free some space and do the upgrade but now a prompt appears after logging in saying I'm out of space. This prompt asks me if I want to examine the problem. The "Disk Usage Analyser" is opened. In the top it says: Total filesystem capacity: 47.0 GB (used: 13.5 GB available: 33.4 GB) Folder -- Usage -- Size / -- 100% -- 12.5 GB usr -- 44.8 % -- 5.6 GB home -- 30.3 % -- 3.8 GB lib -- 13.0 % -- 1.6 GB var -- 9.1 % -- 1.1 GB boot 2.5 % 309.5 GB and a lot of small contributors like: etc, opt, sbin, bin etc. I do not really understand this problem since the analyser in the top says that I have 33.4 GB left in this file system. What can I do to make Ubuntu use the remaining space? • What could be my path? Networking, programming, or something else?

  Well first and foremost, I would like to give my brief description: I was an aviation student but I didn't pursue that path because I lost my interest. Now I'm an I.T. student and currently stopped schooling because of confusion. I don't know which path I should choose: could it be programming or networking? Someone told me that on networking the money is easy, the job is easy. Others told me that programming is best suited for me because I'm very skilled and excellent at figures. I want to chose networking, but I can't find my passion for it, my mind tells me but my heart doesn't... and on programming, I don't know which language I should pick or if I like it or not. A good mentor, even if only online, would be a very big plus to me, but I don't think if there are many who could spent their time on teaching a nobody... but I'm very eager to learn. My real passion is gaming! I want to work in the gaming industry, I want to be a man behind those games! I've been a gamer freak since birth. But I don't know how to get in to that industry. I don't know what to do. I don't know which path would really suit me. Sorry if some of you find this a pointless question, but please bear with me, this could be the turn of my life.

• Lexmark X5650 doesn't print (scanning works)

  I want to use a Lexmark X5650 under Ubuntu. When I connect it via USB, Ubuntu recognizes the device, but can't find a driver. On the Lexmark support site, you can select "Unix/Linux" and then "Ubuntu 9.04", "9.10", "10.04" and "10.10". However, all versions lead to the same driver: lexmark-08z-series-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.tar.gz (Last updated: 2012-04-13). While installing this driver, the installer asks me to connect the device. As soon as I connect it via USB, Ubuntu now adds the printer automatically. So after the installation completed, I had 2 printers set up. But I can't print anything (I tried it with both printer configurations). Scanning works fine, though. So I guess the driver installation and the device connection are successful. When I try to print something, the print job is listed in the printing queue, but nothing happens. After some time, I get an error message which starts a debug wizard, but in the end it reads something like "Sorry, couldn't find the reason". I had several different error messages (unfortunately, I didn't record them), one was approximately like "printer cannot communicate with computer". Another said that my color ink was low (which is true, but black is full). Another said there was an input/output error. I tried it with Ubuntu 11.10. Because I read that some people had success with 10.04., I installed it in QEMU and installed the driver there, too. Same problem, though. I'd like to upgrade to 12.04, if it should work there for any reason, but I read that for some people this printer stopped working in 12.04 :/ So, it would be best if the printer would work in 12.04. If that's not possible, I'd be fine with starting a QEMU virtual machine with any GNU/Linux distribution that works with my printer.

• Remote reboot over ssh does not restart

  I would like to remotely reboot my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server via ssh. I do sudo reboot and I loose connection and the server connection does not reappear. It does not ping. When I go the the physical computer with a screen attached I see a black screen and hear that the server is still on. I do a hard power off (press power on button for a few seconds) and the server halts. After I press power on the server boots with no problem. As far as I remember the remote reboot has previously worked on that server. I wonder if sudo reboot & will help? I suppose I could also try sudo shutdown -r and see if that does any difference. I have listed an excerpt of /etc/log/syslog below. The last thing it records is the stopping of the logging. • Connect to localdb using Sql Server management studio

  I was trying to find my databse for local db under localhost etc but no luck. The following led me to just connect to it, kind of obvious really when you look at your connections string but.. its sunday morning or something.. From: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlexpress/archive/2011/07/12/introducing-localdb-a-better-sql-express.aspx High-Level Overview After the lengthy introduction it's time to take a look at LocalDB from the technical side. At a very high level, LocalDB has the following key properties: LocalDB uses the same sqlservr.exe as the regular SQL Express and other editions of SQL Server. The application is using the same client-side providers (ADO.NET, ODBC, PDO and others) to connect to it and operates on data using the same T-SQL language as provided by SQL Express. LocalDB is installed once on a machine (per major SQL Server version). Multiple applications can start multiple LocalDB processes, but they are all started from the same sqlservr.exe executable file from the same disk location. LocalDB doesn't create any database services; LocalDB processes are started and stopped automatically when needed. The application is just connecting to "Data Source=(localdb)\v11.0" and LocalDB process is started as a child process of the application. A few minutes after the last connection to this process is closed the process shuts down. LocalDB connections support AttachDbFileName property, which allows developers to specify a database file location. LocalDB will attach the specified database file and the connection will be made to it.
