• Is there any Mac Pro hardware parts that can ONLY be purchased thru Apple?

  I'd like to know if I need to be concerned about any hardware parts that I should include in a brand new Mac Pro purchase, instead of trying to hunt it down on 3rd party vendors (or whitelist vendors / hardware suppliers). The main components I'm interested for "upgradeability" are: Processors (If starting with Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core "Westmere"); RAM (If starting with the least possible, which seems to be 6 x 1GB); Video Cards (If starting with one ATI Radeon HD 5770, can a 2nd one be purchased elsewhere?) Hard-Drives (Since these are mounted in specialized trays [if I'm not mistaking], are they also sold elsewhere? And can they be bought as SSDs?) Power Supply (Do I need to be concerned about this at all, or does it auto-adjust depending on the new component upgrades?) I just want to be sure by choosing a Mac Pro with lower component specifications that I can in fact purchase upgrade parts cheaper elsewhere. Thanks!

• Delete temporary files from batch script in xp

  I'm looking for a good batch script that would quickly find & clean all the known safe temporary folders/files from Windows (as many variants as possible) machines (e.g. the windows temp folder, all users IE temp folders, etc.). I'm fond of UI tools like CCleaner (over Cleanmgr.exe), but when I'm trying to clean several computers quickly and/or with minimal involvement, it would be nice to have a script. Plus with a script, I could chain several scripts together. Maybe one to then fire up various antivirus and/or malware detectors. Anyone have a good one or can point to a good resource?

• CPU fan turns on and off repeatedly without booting

  My PC has suddenly stopped starting up. On checking with case open, the CPU fan starts running when the power is turned on, but it stops after about 2-3 seconds, restarts again after about 2-3 seconds and the loop is repeated. There is no beep and nothing appears on the screen. On searching the internet, I found there could be several reasons for this. I tried removing hard-disk, CD drive, tightening connections etc but of no avial. I also tried using a new power supply but the response is the same. Where could be the problem and how can it be solved? Thanks in advance.

• Asterisk failing at startup after upgrading to asterisk18

  I was using asterisk16 and asterisk16-skypeforasterisk, which was working fine. I have recently upgraded to asterisk18 and asterisk18-skypeforasterisk, after that I am receiving the following error message. Asterisk ended with exit status 1 Asterisk died with code 1. Asterisk could not start! Use 'tail /var/log/asterisk/full' to find out why. When I checked the log I got the following messages. codec_g729a.c: == Found total of 11 G.729 licenses translate.c: empty buf size, you need to supply one Now, if I remove the /var/lib/asterisk/licenses folder it works fine. • Asus EEE PC 1005HA (XP Home) refuses to connect to Virgin Mobile MiFi

  My client has an Asus EEE PC model 1005HA, and we're attempting to connect it to the WiFi network created by a VirginMobile MiFi unit. They also have a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard that has absolutely no issue connecting to the MiFi. The specific symptom is that the netbook fails to lease an IP address from the MiFi unit. I supply the 12-digit numerical password (WPA) to the netbook, it throws a 'waiting for network' dialog with an indeterminate progress indicator, and then times out. Update: We've determined that this behavior has stopped when the EEE PC and the MiFi unit were taken out of the client's home, and to a different home that didn't have an existing wifi network. Similarly, when taken to a third location that didn't have wifi, the EEE PC and MiFi got along swimmingly. My current theory is that the existing wifi networks and the wifi leg of the MiFi unit are on the same channel and competing with one another. Perhaps the MacBook Pro has the capability to overcome this interference, while the EEE PC doesn't.

• How to customize Windows 7 HAL library during installation (BSOD STOP: 0x000000A5)?

  While trying to install Windows 7 x86 Ultimate on Samsung M40 laptop (Pentium M 1.7 Dothan, 2 GB RAM/ 100 GB HDD) i receive BSOD STOP: 0x000000A5: The bios in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your system vendor for an updated bios. The bios on the system is updated to latest version. If ACPI is the real source of the issue it means that I possibly could use another HAL library. In Windows XP it is possible to install system with generic HAL library pressing F7 when installer asks to supply drivers, but on Windows 7 I can't find such option. Ironically, Vista installs and works nice, even if they said that Windows 7 is less demanding for hardware. Windows 7 Advisor also tells nothing suspicious. Can anybody tell me how to customize Windows 7 installer to use generic HAL library (if it is possible, of course) or point me to another solution?

• Should I use UPS with my laptop to extend the battery life?

  I recently bought a new Vaio laptop which has a 4400 mAh battery. I will use it at home most of the time, and I have an unused uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Should I remove the battery and connect my laptop to UPS? If I do that, how much does it effect the battery's life? I know that batteries stand longer when kept in half-charged in a cool place, but their lifespan decreases in time due to age effect as well. So is it worth to keep the battery out of my laptop, use a UPS instead and mount it when necessary? or should I continue to work with battery mounted?

• Secure copying (file transfer) between two Linux servers in the same datacenter (Linode)

  I have two Linodes in the same data center. I want to copy files from one to the other each night or on demand (for about the next month, until this project is finished). So I'm thinking about using rsync. My question is how do I set up the two Linode servers to communicate via private IP addresses securely? Both servers are SSH hardened, they use denyhosts and have a fairly restrictive iptables setup. I know I need to first assign private IP addresses to each server, then configure static networking according to this guide. What is next? What SSH or iptables settings are needed to allow these two servers to communicate? What further info do I need to supply in this question? I'm looking for a basic step-by-step guide for how to do this.

• What could be the maximum number of hosts on a 100BaseTX ethernet network ?

  Hello, I'm having two ip networks (192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x) bridged on a server, but all hosts (fixed IPs) are on the same physical 100BaseTX ethernet (with a daisy chain of 48ports switchs). Often, I loose link between the server and hosts of the second network. Usually if I reboot the host, the connection work again, and if I force connection to be active, the connection keep alive until I ping after a while without active connection. I'm wondering how many hosts can be connected on the same network without troubles, and eventually how many switches can be daisy chained ? I suppose maximum length between hosts to be 100meters to the hub or 200meters between extremity of the network.   When I set up a tunnel using dynamic forwarding (ssh -D), which side is running the SOCKS proxy? That is, is the proxy running on the local end (client) or the remote end (server)? Here's the situation: I want to set up several tunnels chained together using -L. Should the -D tunnel be the last one in the chain or the first one? Edit: I found the answer to the second paragraph on Super User (the -D tunnel should be at the remotest end). But I'd still like to know where the proxy code is running.

  In our office, there are frequent eletric shortages that harm my desktop computer, so I wanted to install a UPS. However, my office-mates pointed me to papers talking about hazardous radiation from the UPS. The UPS manufacturers themselves recommend to put the UPS several meters away from humans, which is not possible because our office is small (the power is about 0.5 meters from us). As an alternative to UPS, my office-mates recommended that I switch to a laptop, which has a battery so it's immune to shortages. I have several questions: Is it true that the radiation from a laptop battery is lower than the radiation from a UPS? They do just the same thing - supply power using a battery! If the answer to 1 is yes - is there an alternative way to attach a battery, similar to a laptop battery, to a desktop computer? If the answer to 1 is no - how can I prove this to my office-mates, so that they let me use UPS?

  The goal is to have access to internet thru SSH tunneling to SOCKS proxy. Me - ssh-on-my-vps - SOCKS proxy - internet Thing is I want to be able to quickly change the SOCKS proxy in this chain. If I use port forwarding on ssh, I assume I have to re-establish SSH tunnel with new SOCKS proxy address in parameters whenever I want to change proxy. Is that right? If it is, then I probably should always point SSH tunnel to localhost listening proxy server which will send requests to specified SOCKS proxy. So what local proxy I should choose that allows to easily change the destination SOCKS proxy via maybe reading from local file where I would put the SOCKS proxy address or via specifying new SOCKS address in its web-admin page?

  Background I have a set of embedded hardware deployed in the field. These remote machines connect back to my servers at AWS running Ubuntu and I use the iptables mangle chain to lower the MTU to 500 so these devices are happy. For reference, this is the iptables rule I am using: -A POSTROUTING -p tcp --sport 12345 --tcp-flags SYN,RST SYN -o eth0 -j TCPMSS --set-mss 500 Current Problem I'm trying to spin up some servers on the Joyent Cloud using SmartOS, but I can't find any information on selectively changing the MTU like I can on Linux (e.g. all info I've found is on changing it globally, which is not what I want). How would I do it so that all connections on TCP port 12345 get the MTU I want?

• How to turn off power metering in HP ILO2?

  I have an issue with all of my RHEL 5.3 servers, where HP iLo2 power meter checks the power draw of the power supply on the server. However this gets passed to the /var/log/messages in our host, and eventually fills up the logs. Anyone have any idea how to completely disable power meter option in iLo? I checked google and iLo2 documentation provided from HP, but found nothing that tells you how to disable it / turn it off. Maybe some CLI command? Im not sure.   I'm trying to limit the bandwidth between my eth0 output (nginx proxy) to my loopback inteface (apache) by filtering on destination port. Incoming Packet -> Eth0 -> 0.0.0.0:80 Nginx -> tc qdisc class/iptable mangle 2525port -> 127.0.0.1:2525 Apache I don't know if it's even possible I'm just experimenting. • Laptop goes black after a minute or so

  I have a laptop that is behaving strangely. When I turn it on, it does everything what it is supposed to do, but after a minute or so I hear a Click and all goes black. It's like it turns off the power. It doesn't matter what the laptop is doing. It also happens when it's just waiting in the Bios setup menu. Has someone experienced this before? Can it be the power supply? Can it be a cooling problem? Any ideas? By the way, it's a Compaq Presario Laptop, maybe 3 years old already.

In an earlier call I was advised that since Intel announces the processor now it may start dispatching from the 6th. Is that true? Is HP obligated not to dispatch it before the 6th? (normally/legally or as a 'deal between gentlemen'). Does anyone know if HP dispatches normally dv7s now? Did they intentionally not dispatch them to retailers before the CES?

• Install wireless router with cable modem - need authentication server?

  I've bought a wireless router which I'm installing with a Telstra BigPond cable modem for a friend. As part of the setup I've got to a screen requesting username / password / authentication server for the cable modem They have contacted Telstra who supply the username / password and say that is all they need. They dont know anything about an authentication server. • changing filesystem format from jfx to ext4 without losing data

  I have a fresh Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04) running on a laptop. where I defined the filesystems as: mount point / on ext4 (46 Gb) mount point /home on jfs (63 GB) swap as 3 Gb I left the machine over night to do some task, without AC power supply. next day in the morning I found it on standby, task completed, but filesystem was not reachable. it gave me I/O error it seems that there is a problem with jfs and standby. anyways, to avoid any hassle, I want to move this mount point from jfs format to ext4. can I do this without losing data and without the need to place the data in a temporary location until transformation is done? sorry to mention that, but I recall back in the windows days, we would change a FAT16 to FAT32 or a FAT32 to NTFS without having to lose the data. I hope this is available on Linux.

  I'll qualify this specifically (by order of preference): must have the highest diagonal measurement, widescreen or "normal" aspect ratio doesn't matter here, just the diagonal. must have the highest resolution available, which means 72 inches of 1280x1024 won't cut it. must not have a TV tuner built into it, I'm not looking for a TV set, this is a monitor! must be available at a retail outlet that caters to the general public, i.e. Best Buy, Sears, Costco (all of these examples are in the U.S., although you can suggest something from whatever chain is in your area/nation/geography). Non-retail or non-physical venues like eBay, or businesses that only cater to other businesses, do not qualify under this requirement. I should be able to walk into this place and purchase it, not just whip up an order online. If you are unsure about this requirement, just ask yourself: can I physically see it before I open my wallet and purchase it?

• How to copy password from Mono-executed KeePass2 to xterm on Linux?

  I use KeePass2 to access username/password information in a Dropbox file. This allows convenient access from multiple devices. I can't seem to copy a password to the clipboard on my Linux 2.6.27.41-170.2.117.fc10.x86_64 system, however, in order to supply the password to a prompt in an xterm(1). I've tried both Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V and highlighting and mouse button 2 clicking. The KeePass2 program on the Linux system is executed by Mono. How can I copy the password to the xterm(1)? [Aside: I think we need a "KeePass" tag.] ADDENDUM: My mouse buttons were misconfigured: button 2 wasn't set to "copy". Sorry for the false alarm.

• Error in New-MailboxExportRequest - "Couldn't find the Enterprise Organizational Container" even though permissions seem right

  When disabling users I typically will be asked to retain a copy of their mailbox. I accomplish this by literally creating their mailbox in Outlook and then exporting to PST. Is there some way around having to do this just to save a mailbox? Edit: I've tried New-MailboxExportRequest but I keep getting the following after providing an alias: Supply values for the following parameters: FilePath: \\localhost\EXPORT_PST\myuser.pst Mailbox: myuser Couldn't find the Enterprise Organization container. <--- the error I've also tried supplying [email protected] as the mailbox as well. Edit 2: I had already seen the post at http://www.mikepfeiffer.net/2010/10/error-couldnt-find-the-enterprise-organization-container-when-creating-a-new-mailbox-export-request/ so I set the permissions as follows below: NTFS permissions Sharing permissions I am still getting that error. Final Solution In Exchange SP2, it does not warn you that you have not set role assignments, it just fails. So be sure to create a management role for "Mailbox Import Export" and add your user to the group, then restart PowerShell for this to take effect.

• No display but video card fans spins

  Since I moved my computer there's no display when I plug my screen in the video card but works fine in the mother board. I tried reseting the cmos, but I still have the same problem. The fans are spining and there's a light from the card. I tried the DVI ports and the HDMI Here's my build. I have it for 2 months and everything was working fine. Do you think it's the video card? • Transfered SSL Certificate to Rackspace Cloud Server - Occasional Errors

  Okay, I recently tranfered my Comodo SSL certificate from my previous Bluehost account to my new rackspace cloud server. (LAMP stack) Basically I just copy pasted the server cert and key and checked to make sure it was properly installed which it was. Now I am running into some issues, occasionally I will hear from people that they are getting an 'Untrusted Connection Error' while others are not getting this error at all. Recently someone sent me a screen shot of their error and it said: This Certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided. The browser they noticed this on was safari so I cleared all my history data in safari and opened the site but I am not seeing that error. Does anyone have any idea how to fix something like this?
