  I am tired of Java web, and started to learn Ruby on Rails because of that, but I just found this Framework and it looks promessing... But I am not in the mood to study more Java, so I would like to know if this one is worth my time ( that would mean, less configuration and action mapping and so on) Is it better then Struts 2(WebWorks) ??? because those are way better then Struts 1 but still not a RoR. Spring MVC ? I would like a Hands On Opnion, not a specs compare. Thanks !

• SOAP - What's the point?

  I mean, really, what is the point of SOAP? Web services have been around for a while, and for a while it seemed that the terms 'SOAP' and 'Web service' were largely interchangeable. However SOAP always seemed unwieldy and massively overcomplicated to me. Then REST came along, and suddenly web services made sense. As Joel Spolsky says, give a programmer a REST URL, and they can start playing with the service right away, figuring it out. SOAP is obfuscated behind WSDLs and massively verbose XML, and despite being web based, you can't do anything as simple as access a SOAP service with a web browser. So the essence of my question is: Are there any good reasons to ever choose SOAP over REST? Are you working with SOAP now? Would it be better if the interface was REST? Am I wrong?

For this I read that I have to modify the web.config from Central Administration and web.config from my site with the membership and roleManager tags configured properly. But if I use this: <membership> <providers> <add name="MyProvider" type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider, System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" .../> </providers> </membership> System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider requires a database generated with ASP.NET SQL Server Setup Wizard (aspnet_regsql.exe), and this is my problem! When researching further (particularly on SO), general advice is that setting <compilation debug="true"> in web.config has a much bigger impact. Has anyone done any testing to get some actual numbers about this? • URL of the website calling Restlet API

  I have a Restlet API and the methods exposed on it are called by a PHP web app. This web app is accessible by several domain names and depending on the domain certain aspects of the app are changed (look and feel, content etc). Is there a way for Restlet to determine the URL of the calling web app? I have used getReference() but all I can get is the (internal) IP address of the calling web server (not the domain name). My only other alternative is to pass the URL of the web app with every request to the API but it would be cleaner if Restlet already knew. Thanks

• Call REST service while impersonating a user that is already authorized to the glasfish server

  There are two web-applications deployed on a glassfish server. Both web applications provide a REST web service. the access to both web-services is secured via glassfish security constraints (at the moment BASIC Auth and file-realm). Let's say a user is accessing the service of web application A. After he is authorized, service A wants to call service B via REST client. Is there a way for a service to impersonate a user that is already authorized to the glasfish server? Maybe something like forwarding the security context or editing the headers? • SSPI Errors for SQL Server Authentication?!

  We have several old ASP and PHP web applications which use SQL Server Authentication. Periodically, all the applications lose the ability to connect to our SQL Server 2000 database server, getting access denied. Corresponding to roughly the same times, we are getting 1115 Cannot generate SSPI Context SQLSTATE HY000 errors on the SQLServer 2000 server. And here's the weird part - rebooting the web server fixes the problem. Rebooting the database server has no effect. This makes no sense to me - I didn't think SSPI was in any way involved with SQL Server Authentication. Any ideas? Edit: Some additional details: The web server is in the DMZ. The hosts file on the web server has an entry for the database server (and the ip address is correct), so the web server (theoretically at least) shouldn't even be going to DNS to connect to the database server. It does not appear to be a firewall issue.

I have a problem in my asp.net 3.5 application (C#) when I try to render in my pages characters like 'è' which are shown in a very strange manner (if i'm lucky i get a ? mark in my web page). in fact Expression Web, when i open my web site, substitutes the è char with �... How can I tell asp.net that I want to use a particular charset so that i can write in the html source letters like è without using hexadecimal codes?????? I tried in the web.config this: inside the system.web namespace of the file but nothing works.... Can anyone tell me how to do? THANKS in advance

• SharePoint 2010 GAC deployment doesn't update

  The following issue just crept up on me. The steps mentioned below had worked just fine until about 2 days ago. When I deploy a update to a solution (of web parts) to a SharePoint 2010 server I don't see the update. The solution does get installed, but from what I can tell the installed web parts are over a month old (nothing new is installed). I do the following steps through PowerShell: retract the solution from the web app remove the solution add the solution install the solution to the web app I have tried restarting the Web App, restarting IIS and also restarting the server. Nothing seems to work. I notice that after I remove the solution it does get removed from the GAC. After I add/install it the solution does reappears in the GAC. Am I missing something? Am I overlooking a step that I should be doing? Something to try?

• Is it a good practice to perform direct database access in the code-behind of an ASP.NET page?

  Hi, I am an experienced developer but I am new to web application development. Now I am in charge of developing a new web application and I could really use some input from experienced web developers out there. I'd like to understand exactly what experienced web developers do in the code-behind pages. At first I thought it was best to have a rule that all the database access and business logic should be performed in classes external to the code-behind pages. My thought was that only logic necessary for the web form would be performed in the code-behind. I still think that all the business logic should be performed in other classes but I'm beginning to think it would be alright if the code-behind had access to the database to query it directly rather than having to call other classes to receive a dataset or collection back. Any input would be appreciated.

  I want to run windows 8 as a guest os with virtualbox on some thinkpad (haven't bought one yet) running Ubuntu 12.04. Apart from virtualizing windows 8 (mostly just for use with the office suite app) my needs are very modest, I don't need much more than emacs and a browser. What I'd like to know is what kind of specs will be necessary to run windows 8 well as a vm, using the office apps. It would be a shame to waste money on overpowered hardware.   Im using Windows Server 2008, IIS7, .NET 4 and when I use the FileUpload control to save a file to a directory I get : Access to the path 'C:\xxx\Websites\CMS\Admin\test' is denied. I have given the test folder full control permissions for NETWORK SERVICE but it makes no difference. I have given full control to the Everyone user but makes no difference. It might have something to do with the fact that up in the CMS folder there is a MVC web application and in the CMS\Admin folder there is a web forms web application. It is the web forms web application that is trying to upload the file and getting the permissions error. Can anyone offer a suggestion.

  I am setting up a spring mvc web application + hibernate jpa + maven from scratch using Eclipse Indigo. I am stuck in this error when doing a Maven build.   I'm using the Logging Application Block in my ASP.NET application and want to convert the application to a Sharepoint WebPart.   I am developing a C# VS 2008 / SQL Server 2008 website. I have a Gridview. I included the Default.aspx and aspx.cs files below.   I am developing a C# VS 2008 and SQL Server 2008 website. However, I get the below error now when I first run this: The DataSourceID of 'GridView1' must be the ID of a control of type IDataSource. A control with ID 'AdventureWorks3.mdf' could not be found What is causing this error? Here is my default.aspx file.
