• How should I unbind and delete OpenAL buffers?

  I'm using OpenAL to play sounds. I'm trying to implement a fire-and-forget play function that takes a buffer ID and assigns it to a source from a pool I have previously allocated, and plays it. However, there is a problem with object lifetimes. In OpenGL, delete functions either automatically unbind things (e.g. textures), or automatically deletes the thing when it eventually is unbound (e.g. shaders) and so it's usually easy to manage deletion. However alDeleteBuffers instead simply fails with AL_INVALID_OPERATION if the buffer is still bound to a source. Is there an idiomatic way to "delete" OpenAL buffers that allows them to finish playing, and then automatically unbinds and really them? Do I need to tie buffer management more deeply into the source pool (e.g. deleting a buffer requires checking all the allocated sources also)? Similarly, is there an idiomatic way to unbind (but not delete) buffers when they are finished playing? It would be nice if, when I was looking for a free source, I only needed to see if a buffer was attached at all and not bother checking the source state. (I'm using C++, although approaches for C are also fine. Approaches assuming a GCd language and using finalizers are probably not applicable.)

• Restore audio settings - cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

  The internal speaker of my laptop never functionned under Ubuntu. I tried to follow indication on the web and now the jack audio does not work either. The graphic interface for audio management now displays a 'dummy output' instead of the three possible outputs I used to have (one of them was working for the jack output). In a terminal alsamixer raises an error: cannot open mixer: No such file or directory I did try to remove and reinstall alsa-utils but it did not change anything. This happened after a failed atempt to install alsa-driver-linuxant_1.0.23.1_all.deb from here. My sound card seems to be not recognised anymore. After reboot I have no more the sound icon in menu bar the upper right corner. I think I have removed my sound card driver. Indeed, the command sudo lshw -class multimedia indicated audi device as unclaimed. Any idea how I could revert to a better situation (that is jack support and alsa working)? • Is paper indispensable in a programmer's everyday work?

  As a programmer who work in a company whose vision is to make paperless office possible, is there any way I can work effectively while using less paper? I can list at least several kinds of papers I use quite often: Paper notebook, on which I do most of the pre-coding design work and ideas Books Temporary printouts of source code, though not so often (in color, with a 6 point font at 600 DPI) Sticky note, to remind myself of things that should be taken care of within a few days On the other hand, I also use a wiki and an office text editor. Once a while I would use a diagramming software to make a few flowcharts. Deeper questions: Is there a relationship between paper use and productivity? How can programmers help save the trees? Is paperless software development fundamentally different from paperless office? Related questions: Do you ever write code with pen and paper, and should we do it more often? What physical tools do you find useful to work as a programmer? What things are essential on a programmer's desk? Stuff every programmer needs while working Additional info, if it helps: Everyone has dual monitors. We have decent project management and issue tracking software (both web-based). Please be constructive. In particular, please give your answer to your peer programmers who wish to be flexible and are willing to change working style in order to become more productive as well as meeting certain their own personal values. • Execute a SSIS package in Sync or Async mode from SQL Server 2012

  Today I had to schedule a package stored in the shiny new SSIS Catalog store that can be enabled with SQL Server 2012. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh479588(v=SQL.110).aspx) Once your packages are stored here, they will be executed using the new stored procedures created for this purpose. This is the script that will get executed if you try to execute your packages right from management studio or through a SQL Server Agent job, will be similar to the following: Declare @execution_id bigint EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[create_execution] @package_name='my_package.dtsx', @execution_id=@execution_id OUTPUT, @folder_name=N'BI', @project_name=N'DWH', @use32bitruntime=False, @reference_id=Null Select @execution_id DECLARE @var0 smallint = 1 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'LOGGING_LEVEL', @parameter_value=@var0 DECLARE @var1 bit = 0 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'DUMP_ON_ERROR', @parameter_value=@var1 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[start_execution] @execution_id GO The problem here is that the procedure will simply start the execution of the package and will return as soon as the package as been started…thus giving you the opportunity to execute packages asynchrously from your T-SQL code. This is just *great*, but what happens if I what to execute a package and WAIT for it to finish (and thus having a synchronous execution of it)? You have to be sure that you add the “SYNCHRONIZED” parameter to the package execution. Before the start_execution procedure: exec [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'SYNCHRONIZED', @parameter_value=1 And that’s it . PS From the RC0, the SYNCHRONIZED parameter is automatically added each time you schedule a package execution through the SQL Server Agent. If you’re using an external scheduler, just keep this post in mind .

• Partial upgrade on 12.04, how to stop nagging after locking to a working NVIDIA & xorg

  How to stop the upgrade manager from offering updates and upgrades that potentially would harm my working 2D and 3D graphics? Finally, I got 12.04 working as it should: with nvidia-173 drivers by downgrading xorg and locking the version: On my 32-bit system on Athlon64, with (Albatron) NVIDIA GeForce FX5700XT, locked (/pinned) to xorg 1:7.6-7ubuntu7, xserver-xorg-core 2:11.1-0obuntu10.07, nvidia-173 173.14.35-0ubuntu0.2? An annoying thing left is that every time the updates are checked, I get warning of partial updates, and ambiguous options of "partial update" and "close". Ambiguous in that sense that if I click close, I will get option to update a few packages, which has been OK, while "partial update" would like to update my kernel to 3.2, alter xorg, remove nvidia-173 etc., and update mesa etc. This is not what I call appropriate, after locking XORG and NVIDIA drivers to working ones. One may say according to package management logic it may be correct, but to me as an user it makes little sense. Last Ubuntu that worked without big mess for me was 10.10, hence I will not put 12.10 to my "production" system, until I can be sure it will not trash the system again. P.S. Is there a recommended way to keep NVIDIA GeForce FX working with 3D on Ubuntu... in future?

• Two different domains as one user session

  I have two websites that are run as the same service. Each domain offers articles from a different market. At the top of each page the two domains are shown as menu options. If a user clicks one they can switch to the other domain. See here: http://www.cgtag.com Each domain has a different Google Analytics account, and when a user switches domains Google is counting this as a new session. It's listing the other domain as the "referral" for that new session. When the user switches back to the first domain Google is counting this as a returning visitor. This is messing up my reports. Showing returning visitors values that are higher than reality. It's also increasing hits on landing pages when the user switches, and listing the other domain as a referral site. I've found tips on how to list two domains as one website, but that results in merging the data. I want to keep the two domains separate so that I can track each ones performance, but I don't want to count domain changes as new sessions. Maybe something like treating the two domains as subdomains.

• Windows Azure Virtual Machines - Make Sure You Follow the Documentation

  To create a Windows Azure Infrastructure-as-a-Service Virtual Machine you have several options. You can simply select an image from a “Gallery” which includes Windows or Linux operating systems, or even a Windows Server with pre-installed software like SQL Server. One of the advantages to Windows Azure Virtual Machines is that it is stored in a standard Hyper-V format – with the base hard-disk as a VHD. That means you can move a Virtual Machine from on-premises to Windows Azure, and then move it back again. You can even use a simple series of PowerShell scripts to do the move, or automate it with other methods. And this then leads to another very interesting option for deploying systems: you can create a server VHD, configure it with the software you want, and then run the “SYSPREP” process on it. SYSPREP is a Windows utility that essentially strips the identity from a system, and when you re-start that system it asks a few details on what you want to call it and so on. By doing this, you can essentially create your own gallery of systems, either for testing, development servers, demo systems and more. Whenever you deploy a system to Windows Azure Virtual Machines, you must meet certain password complexity requirements. However, when you build the machine locally and SYSPREP it, you might not choose a strong password for the account you use to Remote Desktop to the machine. In that case, you might not be able to reach the system after you deploy it. Once again, the key here is reading through the instructions before you start. Is it black magic? No not really! Office 365 uses the remote powershell functionality of Windows Powershell 2.0. It builds upon the Windows remote management service (you will find it in the services console of Vista+ or Windows2008+ by default, or installed as an addon on XP). It uses that to connect to a web service, and download the available commandlets – based on the logged in user. WHOAA!! So, what can be managed using PowerShell in Office 365? You can manage domains Security Groups Enhanced Authorizations Identity Federation Partner support – where you designate a partner to manage your Office365 And Exchange. • Code Measuring and Metrics Tools?

  I'm in the process of setting up a build server for personal projects. This server will handle all the normal CI stuff, including running large suites of tests (unit, integration, automated UI). While I'm working out the kinks for including code coverage output with MSTest, it occurs to me that there may be lots of tools out there which give me additional metrics other than just code coverage. FxCop comes to mind as an example. Though I'm sure there are others. Anything that can generate useful reportable data and metrics would be good. Whether it's class dependency charts (looking for Law of Demeter violations, for example), analyses of the uses of classes/functions (looking for a function that isn't used in the system other than just the tests, for example), and so on. I'm not sure the right way to formulate the question, since polling questions or "What's your favorite code analysis tool" aren't very good. But I'm essentially just looking for recommendations on what metrics to gather and the tools that can gather them. The eventual vision for something like this is to have the CI server run a bunch of automated tests and analysis tools and track performance metrics over time. Imagine a dashboard full of graphs plotting these metrics over time. The lines should all relatively be at an equilibrium, and if one starts to stray toward the negative then it's an early indication of problems with the code. In the age old struggle to quantify code quality with management, this sounds like a potentially helpful means of doing just that.

• iFrame content pageviews not matching parent page pageviews

  I have a page with content hosted in an iFrame, both using the same GA account ID. When I look at the pages report, the parent page has about 9000 unique views, but the iFrame content only has 3700. Anyone have an idea what could cause that kind of discrepancy? My only guess is that it would be caused by people moving on before the iFrame content has a chance to load, but the average time on page for the host page is 56 seconds, so that doesn't seem possible. This is the page in question: http://cookware.lecreuset.com/cookware/content_le-creuset-lid_10151_-1_20002 The flipbook is hosted in the iFrame on a separate domain. I have each page of the flipbook triggering a virtual pageview to try to evaluate engagement with the book - when the flipbook loads, it fires a pageview for the page it is on, so that is the page I'm using for the 3700 number. I also looked at the source of the iFrame in the pages report, and that number just about matches the virtual pageviews so that piece is consistent. Any ideas on this are much appreciated. Thanks!

• Using an Apt Repository for Paid Software Updates

  I'm trying to determine a way to distribute software updates for a hosted/on-site web application that may have weekly and/or monthly updates. I don't want the customers who use the on-site product to have to worry about updating it manually I just want it to download and install automatically ala Google Chrome. I'm planning on providing an OVF file with Ubuntu and the software installed and configured. My first thought on how to distributed software is to create six Apt repositories/channels (not sure which would be better at this point) that will be accessed through SSH using keys so if a customer doesn't renew their subscription we can disable their account: Beta - Used internally on test data to check the package for major defects. Internal - Used internally on live data to check the package for defects (dog fooding stage). External 1 - Deployed to 1% of our user base (randomly selected) to check for defects. External 9 - Deployed to 9% of our user base (randomly selected) to check for defects. External 90 - Deployed to the remaining 90% of users. Hosted - Deployed to the hosted environment. It will take a sign off at each stage to move into the next repository in case problems are reported. My questions to the community are: Has anyone tried something like this before? Can anyone see a downside to this type of a procedure? Is there a better way?
