• Is there an Android remote app compatible with LibreOffice Impress under Ubuntu?

  I have an upcoming presentation I want to make in LibreOffice Impress on my Ubuntu 12.10 laptop. I was wondering if I could get ahold of an Android app which would act like a remote control, allowing me to switch between slides from my phone over WiFi without having to stay near the laptop (I've been told I need to move around more during my presentations). A quick look on the Google Play store seemed to turn up a handful of PowerPoint remote apps for Windows or maybe Mac. I also took a look at Can an Android phone control Ubuntu like a remote?, but that seems more for controlling an Ubuntu media center. Is there anything which will work with LibreOffice Impress on Ubuntu? My phone is a Samsung Galaxy Precedent on Straight Talk, running Android 2.2.2 (latest available version from the carrier). It's not rooted, and there's not much memory on it either, so the smaller and simpler the app the better. Also, it has to be free because I currently don't have a means to pay for an app I may/may not like.

  This is my first time trying to compile and install anything on a linux machine. I got the latest version of https://github.com/processone/exmpp via git and read the instructions which state: 2. Build and install Exmpp uses the Autotools. Therefore the process is quite common: $ ./configure $ make $ sudo make install after type ./configure I get the error Cannot find install-sh, install.sh, or shtool in ac-aux Google was of little to no help. Not sure at all what I'm supposed to do. Any help would be much appreciated

• VirtualBox Ubuntu Server with DNS

  I just want to have a local server inside my VirtualBox that offers dns functionality like www.example.local = 127.0.0.1 . Host: Ubuntu 11.10, Guest: Ubuntu 10.10 On my server I can already ping www.example.local - so I configured my virtual host correctly. Question is, how can I address www.example.local from outside my VirtualBox? I searched Google and askubuntu and found dnsmasq. I installed dnsmasq on my server and followed all steps on help.ubuntu. On my host system I've set 192.168.178.91 to the list of dns servers (192.168.178.91 is the IP address of my local server which uses a bridged network adapter). Thing is, I still cannot ping (or connect to) my example.local virtual host. It gives me an unknown host response. How can I set up my DNS server correctly?

  I already know Java, C# and C++. Now I want to start with web development and I saw that some really big sites are built with Python/C++. I like the coding style of Python, it looks really clean, but some other things like no errors before runtime is really strange. However, I don't know what I should learn now. I started with Python but then I saw that Google App Engine also supports Java and the PlayFramework looks amazing too. Now I am really confused. Should I go with Python or Java? I found the IDE for Python "PyCharm" really amazing for web development. Does Java have something similar, eclipse maybe? I know that this question isn't constructive, but it will help me with my decision. What are pro and cons of both languages?

  I'm trying to compile a program which uses Google's V8 library (which is 32 bit). Therefore any library I use within my program also has to be 32 bit. Where can I download the 32 bit version of libraries on Ubuntu 64 bit? More specifically, I'm looking for the libnotify 32 bit version. • Powershell STA watin

  Wow, two posts on the same day. I was working on a quick DLL project to do some web scripting using the awsome power of Watin.  In the past I use to create a vbscript as the test handler to call the DLL but lately I got a Powershell bug to call .NET DLLs. When I tried to debug the Watin call I received: The CurrentThread needs to have it's ApartmentState set to ApartmentState.STA to be able to automate Internet Explorer. I couldn't find a quick google answer to powershell apartmentstate .  Apparently you can set the powershell apartment state by the command line -STA.  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd315276.aspx I've found that the powershell documentation and examples is lacking compared to the Microsoft support I've come to expect.  Why is the Powershell v2.0 in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\windowspowershell\v1.0 ?

• Improve the Quality of ePub eBooks with Sigil

  Would you like to correct errors in your ePub formatted eBooks, or even split them into chapters and create a Table of Contents?  Here’s how you can with the free program Sigil. eBooks are increasingly popular with the rise of eBook readers and reading apps on mobile devices.  We recently showed you how to convert a PDF eBook to ePub format, but as you may have noticed, sometimes the converted file had some glitches or odd formatting.  Additionally, many of the many free ePub books available online from sources like the Project Guttenberg do not include a table of contents.  Sigil is a free application for Windows, OS X, and Linux that lets you edit ePub files, so let’s look at how you can use it to improve your eBooks. Note: Sigil took several moments to open files in our tests, and froze momentarily when we maximized the window.  Sigil is currently pre-release software in active development, so we would expect the bugs to be worked out in future versions.  As usual, only install if you’re comfortable testing pre-release software. Getting Started Download Sigil (link below), making sure to select the correct version for your computer.  Run the installer, and select your preferred setup language when prompted. After a moment the installer will appear; setup as normal. Launch Sigil when it’s finished installing.  It opens with a default blank ePub file, so you could actually start writing an eBook from scratch right here. Edit Your ePub eBooks Now you’re ready to edit your ePub books.  Click Open and browse to the file you want to edit. Now you can double-click any of the HTML or XHTML files on the left sidebar and edit them just like you would in Word. Or you can choose to view it in Code View and edit the actual HTML directly. The sidebar also gives you access to the other parts of the ePub file, such as Images and CSS styles. If your ePub file has a Table of Contents, you can edit it with Sigil as well.  Click Tools in the menu bar, and then select TOC Editor.  Strangely there is no way to create a new table of contents, but you can remove entries from existing one.   Convert TXT Files to ePub Many free eBooks online, especially older, out of copyright titles, are available in plain text format.  One problem with these files is that they usually use hard returns at the end of lines, so they don’t reflow to fill your screen efficiently. Sigil can easily convert these files to the more useful ePub format.  Open the text file in Sigil, and it will automatically reflow the text and convert it ePub.  As you can see in the screenshot below, the text in the eBook does not have hard line-breaks at the end of each line, and will be much more readable on mobile devices. Note that Sigil may take several moments opening the book, and may even become unresponsive while analyzing it.   Now you can edit your eBook, split it into chapters, or just save it as is.  Either way, make sure to select Save as to save your book as ePub format. Conclusion As mentioned before, Sigil seems to run slow at times, especially when editing large eBooks.  But it’s still a nice solution to edit and extend your ePub eBooks, and even convert plain text eBooks to the nicer ePub format.  Now you can make your eBooks work just like you want, and read them on your favorite device!   Pardon me if this is a repeat question,but I've been searching google for vain since the past few days, I'm a flash actionscript game developer who is a bit backward with mathematics, though I find physics both interesting and cool. Similiar game : Untangled flash game I have made an untangled game almost to full completion of logic. But, when two lines intersect , I need those intersected or 'tangled' lines to show a different color; red. It would be really kind of you people if you could suggest an algorithm with / without math for detecting line segment collisions. • Personal search – the future of search

  [Four months ago I wrote a meandering blog post on another blogging site entitled Personal search – the future of search. The points I made therein are becoming more relevant to what I'm reading about and hoping to get involved in in the future so I'm re-posting here to a wider audience to hopefully get some more feedback and guage reaction to it. This has been prompted by the book Pull by David Siegel that is forming my current holiday reading (recommended to me by a commenter on my previous post Interesting things – Twitter annotations and your phone as a web server) and in particular by Siegel's notion of us all in the future having a personal online data vault.] My one-time colleague Paul Dawson recently wrote an article called The Future of Search and in it he proposed some interesting ideas. Some choice quotes: The growth of Chinese search giant Baidu is an indicator that fully localised and tailored content and offerings have great traction with local audiences This trend is already driving an increase in the use of specialist searches … Look at how Farecast is now integrated into Bing for example, or how Flightstats is now integrated into Google. Search does not necessarily have to begin with a keyword, but could start instead with a click or a touch. Take a look at Retrievr. Start drawing a picture in the box and see what happens. This is certainly search without the need for typing in keywords search technology has advanced greatly in recent years. The recent launch of Microsoft Live Labs’ Pivot has given us a taste of what we can expect to see in the future This really got me thinking about where search might go in the future and as my mind wandered I realised that as the amount of data that we collect about ourselves increases so too will the need and the desire to search it. The amount of electronic data that exists about each and every person is increasing and in the near future I fully expect that we are going to be able to store personal data such as: A history of our location (in fact Google Latitude already offers this facility) Recordings of all our phone conversations Health information history (weight, blood pressure etc…) Energy usage Spending history What films we watch, what radio stations we listen to Voting history Of course, most of this stuff is already stored somewhere but crucially we don’t have easy access to it. My utilities supplier knows how much electricity I’m using but if I want to know for myself I have to go and dig through my statements (assuming I have kept them). Similarly my doctor probably has ready access to all of my health records, my bank knows exactly what I have spent my money on, my cable supplier knows what I watch on TV and my mobile phone supplier probably knows exactly where I am and where I’ve been for the past few years. Strange then that none of this electronic information is available to me in a way that I can really make use of it; after all, its MY information. Its MY data. I created it. That is set to change. As technologies mature and customers become more technically cognizant they will demand more access to the data that companies hold about them. The companies themselves will realise the benefit that they derive from giving users what they want and will embrace ways of providing it. As a result the amount of data that we store about ourselves is going to increase exponentially and the desire to search and derive value from that data is going to grow with it; we are about to enter the era of the “personal datastore” and we will want, and need, to search through it in order to make sense of it all. Its interesting then that today when we think of search we think of search engines and yet in these personal datastores we’re referring to data that search engines can’t touch because WE own it and we (hopefully) choose to keep it private. Someone, I know not who, is going to lead in this space by making it easy for us to search our data and retrieve information that we have either forgotten or maybe didn’t even know in the first place. We will learn new things about ourselves and about our habits; we will share these findings with whomever we choose; we will compare what we discover with others; we will collaborate for mutual benefit and, most of all, we will educate ourselves as to how to live our lives better. Search will be the means to that end, it will enable us to make sense of the wealth of information that we will collect day in day out. I am following final year of my Bsc(Hons) in computing and I have completed a foreign diploma, majoring software engineering - Java technologies. • How to sync tasks between Ubuntu and Android?

  I was using first Tasque and then GTG on Ubuntu and Astrid on Android with Remember The Milk as the backend. Recently, Astrid has dropped support for Remember The Milk, and both Tasque and GTG's support for syncing with RTM has always left something to be desired. So I'm looking for a new solution, and I'm open to leaving RTM especially if it is for something that isn't proprietary. What have you found to keep your tasks lists in-sync between Ubuntu and Android? In particular, I'm looking for a desktop based program on the Ubuntu side rather than something in the browser. Astrid has treated me well, but I wouldn't mind trying something else. Currently, it can sync with Astrid.com, Google Tasks, and Producteev. Anyone know of a desktop app that supports any of those?
