• How to clear contents of cell in Excel?

  I've been sent an Excel spreadsheet with a weird first row. Some of the cells say "Column1", "Column2", etc., but I can't delete their contents. If I select the cell and hit backspace, it goes blank, but when I press return, it goes right back to saying "Column1". I found another answer here that suggested this could be caused by "Cell validation", but the validation window says "Any value", and also "show alert" (and I'm not seeing an alert), so I don't think that's it. The first row is white text on a blue background, if that means anything. The spreadsheet was sent to me in XLSX format, but I tried resaving as XLS and opening that, and it seems to make no difference. This is with the "ribbon" version of Excel (they got rid of the Help menu so I don't know how to see what version number it is!). Thanks!

• Restoring backup with Deja Dup from external HD

  So, here's the problem that I have with restoring. First, I backed up like everything. So I had place on the external HD for only one copy. I had to reinstall everything, but I didn't worry because I had a backup. But now, restoring doesn't work and it starts to be annoying. So, I right click "Restore missing files...". Then I have the popup window from Deja Dup asking where is the backup. So, I select the external HD and either put nothing in "folder" or just put ".". Thinking that it should be the base to look for backups. In both cases, after a while scanning, I get: The Volume "Filesystem root" has only 139.7mb disk space remaining. But my partition "/home" has 799.6Gb free. Also, I just want to restore some files, I don't need all of them. On my external HD, there's a file called: duplicity-full.20120514T220834Z.manifest. A text file. In it, I can see that everything is partitions in files of 52mb. So, small files are in one archive while very large files are split in multiple one. But I can see the exact list of file that I have. So, I'm guessing that my backup is intact. What am I doing wrong ? Is possible that it failes, even to list all the files, because I don't have enough space left on my ExtHD ? Why can't duplicity used another location to do that ?

• Have Windows Automatically Login Without Entering Your Password

  If you are like me and don't want to have to enter your password each time Windows loads, you can have Windows start up without prompting you to enter a user name or password.  The simple (and BAD) way to do this is to simply not have a password on your user account, but that’s a big security risk and will allow people to easily remote desktop into your computer. So, first set a password on your windows account if you don’t already have one.  Then select Run... from the start menu (or use Windows Key + R to open the Run window) and type control userpasswords2, which will open the user accounts application.   On the Users tab, clear the box for Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use to automatically log into Windows.  That's it.    You may also want to make sure your screen saver is not set to prompt you for a password when it exits either. Now your computer is secure without getting in your way.

  Using CMSDK in a production environment often requires a robust, reliable and failover enabled repository. When using Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) with your CMSDK repository you need to have a specific configuration in place to support such a setup.   I have a server with mirrored boot volume. It is software raid 1 in Windows Server 2008 R2. I do not have physical access to the server. I am looking for a way to check which disk is a boot drive. I need a way to check it from os. How can I do that ? EDIT: I know how to do that, but I dont think its proper way. From diskpart I can break mirror: select volume 0 break disk=0 And Windows will only allow me to do that on not current boot disk. I want to check which one is boot without breaking mirroring.

• X server not starting up after new kernel compilation

  I have compiled the Kernel on my 64-bit Debian XPS Studio 1340 Dell system. srikanth@debian:~ - 05:40:52 PM - $ uname -a Linux debian 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Mar 22 17:26:33 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux Kernel version that I have used and compiled from kernel.org is 2.6.35.13 I have nvidia installed on old kernel. I got the old config and I used the same config to compile the new kernel. Everything went well and I got two debian packages ( image and headers ) which I have installed on my system. When I select the new kernel on the boot menu and I go into it, the X server is not starting up possibly because I have to "rebuild" ( not sure how to do that ) according to this link: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/x-server-not-starting-after-kernel-compilation-605265/ Can you suggest how to do the rebuild on nvidia module so that I can start x ( without seeing any blank screen or error saying nvidia module is missing ) ? • Can't start firewall or automatic updates in Windows XP

  On a friends laptop following some viruses infestations there is a problem in starting the Windows firewall. The error is: Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified When attempting to turn on automatic updates in the security centre, the message is: We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Updates settings. To try changing these settings yourself, go to System in Control Panel. On the Automtic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then click OK. All the options under "Automatic Updates" are greyed out. I've tried the suggestions below and many others: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/sharedaccess.htm http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/892199 http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm I can't do a repair install because the installer doesn't detect existing versions. • Want shortcut to OpenVPN GUI connect in Windows 7 (without going through the system tray)

  I am running OpenVPN with OpenVPN GUI under Windows 7 x64. Currently, to connect I need to right-click the OpenVPN icon in the system tray and select "connect", which brings up the password prompt. What I want: some sort of a batch file or a shortcut that can be invoked to initiate OpenVPN connection. Motivation: I prefer running my system keyboard driven; I usually hide my taskbar and don't like needlessly fishing in the system tray. Currently, OpenVPN is the only program that forces me to interact with the taskbar. Surely there is an alternative approach, possibly invoking some command line trickery and/or autohotkey, but so far I haven't been able to find it.

  I've a ASP.Net Webapp running on IIS7.5. The Webserver is configured to accept Client Certifcates. Unfortunately Visitors with Safari Browser are unable to view the Page. • Boot from Second SATA Drive

  I have a Dell Precision 490 Workstation, and I just had my other question answered, Install Ubuntu to drive B without impacting drive A, and now I'm having a boot sequence issue. The external drive is great, boots up fine on my laptop, but how do I tell my desktop to boot from my second SATA drive and not the first SATAdrive. My drive configuration as follows SATA-0: Windows SATA-1: DVDR SATA-2: Ubuntu When I choose the boot menu, the option I have is "Internal Hard Drive". I assume it searches all drives, and loads the first bootable one it finds (which happens to be Windows), but I'd like to be able to select the drive from a list. Has anyone experienced this? Is possible without disabling the first hard drive in the BIOS?

  Continuing from Embedded Nashorn in JEditorPane, here is the same JEditorPane on steroids with Nashorn, in the context of some kind of CMS backend system: Above, you see heavy reusage of NetBeans IDE editor infrastructure. Parts of it are with thanks to Steven Yi, who has done some great research in this area. Code completion, right-click popup menu, line numbering, editor toolbar, find/replace features, block selection, comment/uncomment features, etc, etc, etc, all the rich editor features from NetBeans IDE are there, within a plain old JEditorPane. And everything is externally extensible, e.g., new actions can be registered by external modules into the right-click popup menu or the editor toolbar or the sidebar, etc. For example, here's code completion (Ctrl-Space): It even has the cool new feature where if you select a closing brace and the opening brace isn't in the visible area, a rectangular popup appears at the top of the editor, to show how the current piece of code begins: The only thing I am missing is code folding! I wish that would work too, still figuring it out. What's also cool is that this is a Maven project. • Windows Java-based apps not working

  After updating the Java JRE to 7u25, many Java-based applications not works as usual, the I upgrade Java to 7u45, and still the apps not working. Minecraft start screen not showing, have to press TAB key to select the Run button and press ENTER to run the game. Netbeans IDE it's running, but none it's showing on the screen. Eclipse and JDownloader are working fine. I cannot run the Java Control Panel, it's only shows the Java icon at the taskbar. • Trouble dual booting Ubuntu 14.04 & Windows 8

  My motherboard (MSI G45-Z87) has efi, I still can't figure out how to make stuff work with it. I had Ubuntu working with Windows 8 before 14.04 came out and I did a clean install of Ubuntu when it did to upgrade. Since then I hadn't been able to boot Windows but I don't use it anyway so it didn't effect me. I tried getting it working today so I could use some adobe software. The last time I had tried to do something with the boot it was giving me warnings that my boot files were to far in the drive. So I followed this guide to use gparted and boot-repair to add a boot partition. I was able to reboot Ubuntu after that. I then proceeded to install Windows 8.1 to a different drive. Now the computer will only boot straight into Windows and if I manually select Ubuntu, but not the drive Ubuntu is on, to boot it stops on a black screen during boot after showing the Ubuntu logo. I've run boot-repair in several different ways but have had no luck. Here is the boot summary info from the recommended settings for it. I could really use some help.

• Randomly Freezes - How Can I Diagnose the Problem?

  At random times, Ubuntu 10.04 freezes, and I have to do a hard shutdown. It was upgraded from 9.10 which didn't freeze. First, is this is common problem with a quick answer, and if not, what can I do to diagnose it? I've tried checking application/kernel logs, but nothing gives me a clue as to what caused the problem. My guess, is that since the OS froze, no logs could be updated. Ideas? SOLUTION: Solved it. My particular problem was my graphics card (integrated Radeon 9000 series). netconsole revealed I was getting the error: "reserve failed for wait". After trial-and-error, I manually configured my video card and disabled hardware acceleration. Completely fixed the issue. Here is what I did: Manually Created xorg.conf Ubuntu automatically configures xorg.conf and doesn't use a file. To edit this file, you have to tell Ubuntu to explicitly create one and then edit it. Here are the steps: Restart system Hold Shift as GRUB boots Select root terminal in GRUB login menu Execute: X -config xorg.conf.new Copy: cp xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf Disable Hardware Acceleration The following is specific to my Radeon card, but I'm sure other cards have a similar setup. Edit xorg.conf Find "Device" section for graphics card Uncomment "NoAccel" option and set to "True" Save + reboot Hope that helps.

• Squeezebox server on Mac OS 10.6

  I want to run Squeezebox server on my Mac running OS 10.6 Snow Leopard. The Firewall settings on 10.6 now let you speciy by Application things that are allowed to connect through the firewall. But Squeezebox server isn't an application, so I can't select it. If I turn the firewall off, it works fine. This is a reasonable step for a desktop (as it's always connecting to the 'net through the router's firewall) but on a laptop that connects via public WiFi it doesn't seem like a good idea. Help!

• What's the behaviour when opening a group of files at once?

  I selected a group of .odt files, right-clicked the first one and selected open. I would have thought they would open in alphabetical order, but as the second screenshot shows, they're not - the one with "2014-11-13" opens before "2013-10-23". And then when I select the whole group and press Enter, they open in order - and sometimes they don't. What's the behaviour when you right-click and open for a batch of files? Does it start with the one you selected and pick random files in the list to open next?

  I have a Windows 2008 server that has three IP bound to the NIC. I can select which IP Windows SMTP listens to, but I want to also set the IP address used when mail is sent. Where would I set which outbound IP to use when sending email? Without using real IPs, here is an example what I have setup. Three IPs associated with the server: 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2 10.0.0.3 I setup the binding on 10.0.0.2 for port 25 in the SMTP server settings, so that it is the only IP that will respond for inbound. When I look at the email header from an email sent from that server, it lists the server with an address of 10.0.0.3. I would like it to use 10.0.0.2 so that when reverse DNS is performed, it maps back correctly.

• Windows 8.1 - unfixable grub

  I have a Gigabyte laptop that came with secure boot and windows 8. After a bit of battling, I managed to get my dual boot with Ubuntu 13.10.. Anyway, I upgraded zindows to 8.1, now grub is gone. I restarted from a live CD and chrooted to my drive. I used boot-repair multiple times (with successful output) both in default and with some advanced options; also reinstalled grub manually... Each time it tries once to boot to grub but gives a message for a very short amount of time. I recorded it and it is a regular bios message "Rebbot and Select proper Boot device of Insert Boot media in selected boot device and press a key" I even tried something called EasyBCD under winblows, it shows the correct boot options, but same there, it is unable to make the linux partition fire up. Anyway, no way to boot my linux box. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? No need to redirect me to another post with grub reinstall or boot-repair, seen them all... I am thinking of trying this other boot loader, refind, to see if it works http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/index.html Also re-reading this bios message, I'm thinking my partition might not have a boot flag anymore... I'll try that too with parted. Although both grub and win 8 are supposed to fire up from the same boot partition (the EFI one) Please help! thx

• Conflicts with MS Office temporary files when using Offline Folders on Vista

  We are using Offline Folders feature of Windows Vista to make files on network shares available when out of office. Mostly it is working, but every time I do a sync I get a lot of such errors: D500E7B8.tmp - A file was deleted on this computer and changed on the server while this computer was offline. There are hundreds of them. I always select all of them and choose resolution "Delete from both locations". But what is causing this and how can I avoid it? I suspect the reason is that we are using Debian and Samba (3.4.7) on our file server. I've been looking for some Samba options that would cure this, but with no success. I learned that probably the cause is, that both Word and Excel are using specific pattern to change files - they never change the original file, but instead always write a new temporary file and rename it to original file, when you click Save.   Up to now I have been looking at F# for modular solutions, but have never considered writing an end to end application. Today I was wondering how one would even start to write an end to end application and realized that I didn’t even know where the entry point is for an F# application. After browsing MSDN a bit I got a basic example of a F# application with an entry point [<EntryPoint>] let main args = printfn "Arguments passed to function : %A" args // Return 0. This indicates success. 0 Pretty simple stuff… but what happens when you have a few modules in a program – so I created a F# project with two modules and a main module as illustrated in the image below… When I try to compile my program I get a build error… A function labeled with the 'EntryPointAttribute' attribute must be the last declaration in the last file in the compilation sequence, and can only be used when compiling to a .exe… What does this mean? After some more reading I discovered that the Program.fs needs to be the last file in the F# application – the order of the files in a F# solution are important. How do I move a source file up or down? I tried dragging the Program.fs file below ModuleB.fs but it wouldn’t allow me to. Then I thought to right click on a source file and got the following menu.   Wala… to move the source file to the bottom of the solution you can select the “Move Up” or “Move Down” option. Now that I got this right I decided to put some code in ModuleA & ModuleB and I have the start of a basic application structure.
