• Outputing value of TrueClass / FalseClass to integer or string/

  Hello. I'm trying to figure out if there is an easy way to do the following short of adding to_i method to TrueClass/FalseClass. Here is a dilemma: I have a boolean field in my rails app - that is obviously stored as Tinyint in mysql. However - I need to generate xml based of the data in mysql and send it to customer - there SOAP service requires the field in question to have 0 or 1 as the value of this field. So at the time of the xml generation I need to convert my False to 0 and my True to 1 ( which is how they are stored in the DB). Since True & False lack to_i method I could write some if statement that generate either 1 or 0 depending on true/false state. However I have about 10 of these indicators and creating and if/else for each is not very DRY. So what you recommend I do? Or I could add a to_i method to the True / False class. But I'm not sure where should I scope it in my rails app? Just inside this particular model or somewhere else?

• What's a good way to remove all of the subviews of a UIScrollView?

  I have a scroll view and I need to reload the contents often while my app is running. Right now, I'm using the following line of code to remove the subviews before adding them back again: [scrollView.subviews makeObjectsPerformSelector:@selector(removeFromSuperview)]; Should I be using the following instead? scrollView.subviews = nil; For some reason, the (first) above line of code seems to crash the app every 16 times it is run. Am I leaking memory somewhere? The following method takes an array of views, the scroller (which is a constant) and the direction. • secure rest API for running user "apps" in an iframe

  I want to let users create "apps" (like Facebook apps) for my website, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to make it secure. I have a REST api i want to run the user apps in an iframe on my own site (not a safe markup language like FBML) I was first looking at oAuth but this seems overkill for my solution. The "apps" don't need to be run on external sites or in desktop apps or anything. The user would stay on my site at all times but see the user submitted "app" through the iframe. So when I call the app the first time through the iframe, I can pass it some variables so it knows which logged in user is using it on my site. It can then use this user session in it's own API calls to customize the display. If the call is passed in the clear, I don't want someone to be able to intercept the session and impersonate the user. Does anyone know a good way to do this or good write up on it? Thanks!

• How to know if a graphics card provides hardware rendering for wpf

  I have to run a wpf-app in an environment that has all the same dell-pc's with an intel gma 3000 graphics chip (onbard, Q963/Q965). The app renders only with software rendering (Stated so by the RenderCapability.Tier-property (it says the rendering tier is 0!) and I also see this with Perforator). On all of this machines, DirectX 9c is installed and DXDiag states on many but not on all of this machines, that Direct-3d and Direct-Draw-acceleration is activated. I checked also the registry if the setup of these machines disabled wpf-hw rendering but that's also not the case. On one machine I also updated the video-driver and dx with no success. I found a lot of ressources that say, that directX must be installed and active, so that wpf does not use its own software renderer but uses the DirectX HW-Rendering. But on the above machines, DX9c is installed but there is no hw rendering. May it be that wpf uses dx-graphicscards but does the communication with the graphics card direct and not over dx? How can I find out if a specific graphics-chip has to support hardware rendering for wpf or not. The statement that the graphics card must support dx 9c seems not to be the only condition. The second question is, if wpf renders through dx, is this done through direct-3d or is direct-draw used. Is there any good documentation on this topic?

It generates a huge amount of logs in the catalina.out folder, most of these are generated while using the application, but are not generated by the application. • UITabBarControllerDelegate compare value of viewController

  I have a tabBar with 4 tabs on it, and I want to perform some action when a specific tab is selected, so I have uncommented the UITabBarControllerDelegate in the xxAppDelegate.m I also wanted to see the value that was being sent logged in the console - in order to test my "if" statement. However this is where I got stumped. // Optional UITabBarControllerDelegate method - (void)tabBarController:(UITabBarController *)tabBarController didSelectViewController:(UIViewController *)viewController { NSLog(@"%@", viewController); } The console dutifully logged any selected controller that had been selected, but in this particular format: <MyViewController: 0x3b12950> Now, I wasn't expecting the square brackets or the colon or the Hex. So my question is how do I format my IF statement? • My simple program runs on Android emulator, but not on my Nexus One

  To clarify, I have no trouble getting the Nexus One connected in developer's mode. I can actually get Eclipse to "run" my program on my Nexus One. However, my Nexus One simply gets stuck in a reboot loop. I've also created an .apk file and put it onto my Nexus One, installing it with apkInstaller. However, it crashed while installing. I see my app on my phone, but I'm kind of afraid to run it. I am not doing anything fancy in my program; all it does is generate text by shuffling a couple arrays of strings together. It uses a bunch of text views, two buttons, and a spinner. I have only edited the main source file, the strings XML file, and the layout XML file, nothing else. It's a 2.1-update1 program and it runs fine on the emulator. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I'm using Windows 7 (32 bit) and my Nexus One is running Cyanogen 5.0.7.1. I'm pretty sure it's my code that's causing the problem. Now I'm just wondering if there are any common mistakes that would lead my app to run on the emulator but not on my device.   Whenever two concurrent HTTP requests go to my Rails app, the second always returns the following error: A copy of ApplicationController has been removed from the module tree but is still active! From there it gives an unhelpful stack trace to the effect of "we went through the standard server stuff, ran your first before_filter on ApplicationController (and I checked; it's just whichever filter runs first)", then offers the following: /home/matchu/rails/torch/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:414:in `load_missing_constant' /home/matchu/rails/torch/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:96:in `const_missing' which I'm assuming is a generic response and doesn't really say much. Google seems to tell me that people developing Rails Engines will encounter this, but I don't do that. All I've done is upgrade my Rails app from 2.2 (2.1?) to 2.3. What are some possible causes for this error, and how can I go about tracking down what's really going on? I know this question is vague, so would any other information be helpful? More importantly: I tried doing a test run in a "production" environment just now, and the error doesn't seem to persist. Does this only affect development, then, and need I not worry too much?

Is this even possible ? The reason why I am using Silverlight is that I want to preview the image before uploading it to server and it is very simple in Silverlight. I failed to do that in JavaScript and that is why Silverlight might be more useful here.

• iPhone and Core Data: how to retain user-entered data between updates?

  Consider an iPhone application that is a catalogue of animals. The application should allow the user to add custom information for each animal -- let's say a rating (on a scale of 1 to 5), as well as some notes they can enter in about the animal. However, the user won't be able to modify the animal data itself. Assume that when the application gets updated, it should be easy for the (static) catalogue part to change, but we'd like the (dynamic) custom user information part to be retained between updates, so the user doesn't lose any of their custom information. We'd probably want to use Core Data to build this app. Let's also say that we have a previous process already in place to read in animal data to pre-populate the backing (SQLite) store that Core Data uses. We can embed this database file into the application bundle itself, since it doesn't get modified. When a user downloads an update to the application, the new version will include the latest (static) animal catalogue database, so we don't ever have to worry about it being out of date. But, now the tricky part: how do we store the (dynamic) user custom data in a sound manner? My first thought is that the (dynamic) database should be stored in the Documents directory for the app, so application updates don't clobber the existing data. Am I correct? My second thought is that since the (dynamic) user custom data database is not in the same store as the (static) animal catalogue, we can't naively make a relationship between the Rating and the Notes entities (in one database) and the Animal entity (in the other database). In this case, I would imagine one solution would be to have an "animalName" string property in the Rating/Notes entity, and match it up at runtime. Is this the best way to do it, or is there a way to "sync" two different databases in Core Data?

• Omniauth/Devise/Facebook: Auth route is not recognized

  I've been working on this problem for 7 hours now, and I still have no idea. Maybe one of you can help me. I'm simply trying to integrate the OAuth feature of Devise 1.2rc, which uses Omniauth, into my Rails application. I've been using this tutorial by Devise: https://github.com/plataformatec/devise/wiki/OmniAuth%3A-Overview I have done everything they tell you to... Yes, I have added the following line to my devise.rb: config.omniauth :facebook, "APP ID", "APP SECRET" I have added :omniauthable to my user model, as well as the class function as described in the tutorial I have implemented the omniauth_callbacks controller, as well as the callback function, and I have specified the omniauth_callbacks controller in my routes.rb When I run "rake middleware" it does list the Omniauth middleware: use OmniAuth::Strategies::Facebook I have installed Devise directly from the Git repo, master branch, so it's up-to-date I have installed Omniauth 1.2.0.beta5, which is the latest version. In my Gemfile it says: gem 'oa-oauth', '0.2.0.beta5', :require = 'omniauth/oauth' I have restarted the server, obviously However, when I try to request this URL: http://localhost:3000/auth/facebook it simply says ActionController::RoutingError (No route matches "/auth/facebook"): /user/auth/facebook doesn't work either. Since I unfortunately don't have the time to take apart the entire Omniauth and Devise gems and understand every line of code in them, maybe one of you could tell me what the problem might be.

• Single Form with Multiple Dynamic Buttons

  I've spent hours/days trying to figure this out and now I'm completely perplexed so I thought I'd give stackoverflow a try. I'm (a newb) working in Java/JSP using Eclipse hosting on Google App Engine trying to develop an app for a volunteer organization I'm a member of. Rather than embarrass myself by showing my current code I'd love just a nudge in the right direction. I have a form (which doubles as a report basically) showing "people" grouped under the "task" they are currently working on. I would like to select multiple people from multiple tasks and reassign them to another task e.g. Bill and Jane are Gardening, Jeff is Painting. I want to select Jane and Jeff (all people have an associated checkbox in the form) and re-assign them to Sweeping (which is a task on the form but has no people assigned to it yet). Ideally, the re-assignment to Sweeping would be via a Sweeping button (each task would have a dynamically-created task button) that would pass the "Sweeping" value to a servlet along with an array or list of people whose checkbox has been checked. The servlet would handle the request (creating an Assignment "object/entity" with timeStamp, personId, taskId) and then re-direct back to the form/report which would then repaint with the current tasks/people generated from the Assignments class in the datastore. All the tasks are user-defined and retrieved from the database when building the form. Ditto the people. I've been trying to keep the jsp for presentation and the servlets for the processing but I'm no purist and would just like to get unstuck. Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

• Android Hashtable Serialization

  Hi All, I am having a weird issue with serialization of a Hashtable. I have made a Server, Client app. Where server(PC/MAC) is serializing a Hashtable and sending it to Client(Android) through UDP. The data is sent/read correctly but I get a bunch of these messages below on LogCat. 04-12 11:19:43.059: DEBUG/dalvikvm(407): GetFieldID: unable to find field Ljava/util/Hashtable;.loadFactor:F Occasionally, I would see these 04-12 11:21:19.150: DEBUG/dalvikvm(407): GC freed 10814 objects / 447184 bytes in 97ms The app would run for 2-3 mins and then crash. Interestingly enough I do not see the Loadfactor errors on SDK 1.5. But I do see the GC Free xxxx objects, quiet often. After debugging I have found that the issue is with de-serialization and the error/warning are coming from following code Code: ByteArrayInputStream bis = new ByteArrayInputStream(bytes); ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(bis); object = ois.readObject(); at Code: object = ois.readObject(); on the client. My server is serializing code is the following. Code: ByteArrayOutputStream bos = new ByteArrayOutputStream(); ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(bos); oos.writeObject(obj); Any idea what is going on? Thanks for the Help!

• Why don't file type filters work properly with nsIFilePicker on Mac OSX?

The first filter (video in this case) is in effect, but the dropdown to select the other type never shows. Is there something extra that is needed to get this working on OSX? I have tried the latest firefox (3.6) and an older one (3.0.13) and both don't show the file type dropdown on OSX.

• Learning Hibernate: too many connections

  I'm trying to learn Hibernate and I wrote the simplest Person Entity and I was trying to insert 2000 of them. I know I'm using deprecated methods, I will try to figure out what are the new ones later. And since there is only one open at each time, it should work. I tried to add session.close() after the commit, but I got Exception in thread "main" org.hibernate.SessionException: Session was already closed So how to solve the problem?

Currently I have only one section with 100 records. When I installed my app onto my IPhone, I observed that this UITableView is consuming 20 MB of IPhone memory. If I changed the table view style to "UITableViewStylePlain", then it is consuming only 4MB of memory. I'm trying to figure it out, where is the exact problem, but not. • Web Start Application built on NetBeans Platform doesn't create desktop shortcut & start menu item

  I've created a NetBeans Platform application that is launched using Java Web Start. I built the WAR file using the 'Build JNLP Application'-command in Netbeans. I've added a desktop shortcut and menu item to the JNLP file, but for some reason, these are not created when the application is launched. However, when I go to: Control Panel - Java - Temporary Internet Files - View - Select my application Click 'Install shortcuts to the selected application' the desktop and menu shortcuts are created correctly. Also, in the Java Console, the Shortcut Creation option is set to the following (the default, I presume): Prompt user if hinted Below is a snippet of my JNLP file: <jnlp spec="6.0+" codebase="$$codebase"> <information> <title>${app.title}</title> <vendor>SomeVendor (Pty) Ltd</vendor> <description>Some description</description> <icon href="${app.icon}"/> <shortcut online="true"> <desktop/> <menu submenu="MyApp"/> </shortcut> </information> ... • Two PickerViews in save View issue?

  I'm trying to have 2 pickerviews in the same view. It works except for two things. If one pickerview has more rows than the other the app crashes when picking an item from the pickerview with more items. Also I created an NSLog for the pickerviews and the console shows that I'm picking two items at once when in fact i'm only dealing with one pickerview. I know it sounds a bit confusing but I'm including all the code. • ASP.NET MVC intermittent slow response

  Problem In our production environment, system occasionally delays the page response of an ASP.NET MVC application up to 30 seconds or so, even though same page renders in 2-3 seconds most of the times. This happens randomly with any arbitrary page, and GET or POST type requests. For example, log files indicates, system took 15 seconds to complete a request for jquery script file or for other small css file it took 10 secs. Similar Problems: Random Slow Downs Production Environment: Windows Server 2008 - Standard (32-bit) - App Pool running in integrated mode. ASP.NET MVC 1.0 We have tried followings/observations: Moved the application to a stand alone web server, but, it didn't help. We didn't ever notice same issue on the server for any 'ASP.NET' application. App Pool settings are fine. No abrupt recycles/shutdowns. No cpu spikes or memory problems. No delays due to SQL queries or so. It seems as something causing delay along HTTP Pipeline or worker processor seeing the request late. Looking for other suggestions. -- Thanks

  I'm in the progress of building an web-app that syncs with an iOS client. I'm currently tackling trying to figure out how to go about about syncing. I've come up with following two directions: I've got a fairly simple server web-app with a list of items. They are ordered by date modified and as such syncing the order does not matter. One direction I'm considering is to let the client deal with syncing. I've already got an API that lets the client get the data, as well as do certain actions on it, such as update, add or remove single items. I was considering: 1) on each sync asking the server for all items modified since the last successful sync and updating the local records based on what's returned by the server, and 2) building a persistent queue of create / remove / update requests on the client, and keeping them until confirmation by the server. The risk with this approach is that I'm basically asking each side to send changes to the other side, hoping it works smoothly, but risking a diversion at some point. This would probably be more bandwidth-efficient, though. The other direction I was considering was a more traditional model. I would have a "sync" process in which the client would send its whole list to the server (or a subset since last modified sync), the server would update the data on the server (by fixing conflicts by keeping the last modified item, and keeping deleted items with a deleted = 1 field), and the server would return an updated list of items (since last successful sync) which the client would then replace its data with. Thoughts?

• ildasm and dynamic exe files

  Hi There, I am trying to create an application can modify properties in IL to create a slightly different executable. E.g Client A runs app and a label on the WinForm label Reads "Client A:". Client B runs the app and Label Says "Client B". Easy I know using config files or resource files but thats not an option for this project. The Main program needs to be able to generate .exe file dynamically based on some form fields entered by user. My solution was to create a standalone executable that contained all the elements which I needed to make dynamic. I then used ildasm to generate the IL and thought that I could use this IL and substitute tags for the elements i wanted to make dynamic. I could then replace those tags at runtime after user filled the form using regex etc. The problem is, the if i re save the IL file generated by ILDASM as an exe and try to run it. I just launches console and does nothing. Am I going about this the wrong way? I didnt want to delve into Reflection as the dynamic .exe is a really simple one and I thought reverse engineering IL with ildasm would be the quickest way. You thoughts and pointers are much appreciated. Tony

• Crash on iOS when system purges memory and closes a UIViewController

  My application is crashing when one of the views is purged from memory because of low-memory condition. At least this is what I understand from the crashlog. It happens on numerous screens but only when opening a Facebook dialog (using the Facebook SDK). So I don't believe this is caused by the application. I guess that when the phone is not restarted for some time there are applications running in the background and when using Facebook SDK the memory becomes a problem and the system tries to recover the memory from random applications, including my application. My question is, how can I prevent this crash from happening? How should I handle unloadViewForced on a view controller to make the app more robust in low-memory conditions? And lastly, am I right that this crashlog suggests the crash occurred because the system tried to free memory and my application didn't handle it properly? Any help greatly appreciated.
