• Windows Azure openSUSE: rcnetwork not starting

  I have a Linux VM in Azure, created from their default image. My problem is simply that the init script network doesn't look like to start, so dependent services (apache, postfix...) won't start. If I run yast runlevel and try to start postfix it asks me to start network first: if I accept, network is started without errors and then postfix is started. While network is configured to start on boot, it just doesn't appear to have started. Anyway, SSH connections work fine. Currently, I had to edit my init scripts and remove network from the Required-Start list, but that didn't work for posftix (even after running systemctl --system daemon-reload). How can I fix all this?

  Ok...so for some reason by Ubuntu 10.04 partition won't startup anymore. I'm not exactly sure what I did. I have the feeling that I accidentally removed some important packages.   Hi all, I'm currently evaluating the feasibility of using VirtualBox (or VMWare) to deploy the follow project to 10 sites Windows XP MSSQL 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services JBoss to run 1 in-house software that mostly query master data (customers/products) and feed to other software Why I want to do this ? Because the IT staffs in my 10 sites are not capable enough and the steps taken to setup those "in-house project" are also complicated What are the cons I can forsee ? • Technicolor TG582n with external DHCP server [on hold]

  We have a small home setup with a Technicolor TG582n on Plusnet ISP. We have a Samba4 DC with DNS forwarding enabled. The DC forwards to the Technicolor. However, the client machines have their DNS settings manually set. This is an annoyance when using laptops on other networks. We would like to have DHCP handled on the server machine, such that when a client connects to the Technicolor, it gets its IP and DNS information from the DHCP server, eliminating the need to manually set adapter DNS settings. However, I cannot find an option to disable DHCP on the Technicolor and am not completely clear on how one would point DHCP services to the server from the Technicolor if there were the option. So, how would one make the Technicolor use an external server for DHCP leases?

• CentOS 6: Can not start NFS

  I am unable to start the NFS service. When starting there is no error. But the services are stopt after it. No messages at all in /var/log/messages. Same happens to rpcbind serivce. Any idea what this could be? I also tried to disable iptables.   I'm looking for guidance in structuring an LDS directory and finding only best practices targeted at Domain Services. Does anyone here have references for the hierarchical structure we set up in the directory? I'm interested in small items, like whether to name the top node with "DC" tags or "O" tags, etc. E.g., should it be "DC=CompanyName,DC=local" when we're not actually using any specific domain? Shouldn't it be "O=CompanyName"? And I'm interested in whether this question is even worth considering.

  I set my company exchange mailbox in Windows 8.1 mail. (outsite). Everything works fine, but after i start the Windows 8.1 mail i get event with id 529 in the security log continously. • I installed DKIM and SPF. Do I need to install Domain Keys as well?

  I have linux apache mysql and php server. My website uses the php mail() function and the server's postfix server to email other people. I successfully installed SPF and DKIM on my server to reduce the likelihood of my website's email-outs from ending up in people's spam boxes. In my research, I stumbled on Domain Keys which seems to be a "historical" version of DKIM. Do the big web mail services like Google, Yahoo and Hotmail still use Domain Keys? If not, then maybe I don't need to install it?

• Kill xserver from command line (init 3/5 does not work)

  Hi, I'm running Linux Mint 10, although I've had this same issue with other variants of Linux. I've been told/found while researching that if the X server hangs or otherwise errors, one can drop to a root prompt, usually at another tty, and execute init 3 (to drop to single user mode) and then init 5 to return to the default, graphical session. Needless to say, I've tried this before in multiple configurations on multiple machines to no avail. The only feedback I receive form executing those two commands is a listing of VMWare services (from a kernel module) that are stopped and then restarted. Note: If I run startx (either before or after init 3), then I am told that the xserver is still running and that I should remove /tmp/.X0-lock. Having tried that, it removes that error message, but claims that the xserver cannot be attached as another instance is running. How do I kill the xserver completely? Can I killall some process name?

• Fedora Core 11 won't boot without a monitor

  I have a P4 system that I installed Fedora 11 on. It will not boot without a monitor attached. The monitor can be off (not even have power plugged in), but must be attached. Without a monitor the hard disk thrashes around a bit like it's starting up services, but does not get to the point where I can ssh into the box. I have set the default runlevel to 3 and removed the rhgb entry from grub. Any suggestions welcome. Edit: I have already set the run-level to 3. The machine boots up fine with the monitor plugged in to the point where I can SSH into it. as soon as i unplug the monitor and reboot, it will not boot to that point.

• How should I implement an email circuit test?

  I want a high-level test that ensures that both incoming and outgoing email services are operating normally. I've achieved this by writing a python script which does this: Send a message with a unique hash through my mail server to [email protected] The gmail account is configured to auto-reply back to the same address and then delete the message. My script polls IMAP until it finds an email with the correct hash sitting in its inbox, or times out. It reports the elapsed time to my monitoring software (Zabbix) My question: Is gmail the best third-party to use? Should I add a couple others as well such as hotmail and yahoo? Is there anyone more official that will auto-reply to these sorts of "mail pings"? Any other recommendations for this type of test?

• Non-embedded font with different name across operating systems when printing HTML to PDF

  I create a document using HTML markup. I want to use Palatino, which is called Palatino on Windows and Palatino Linotype on Mac, so I specify my CSS accordingly: font-family: Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;. I then print to a PDF using PrimoPDF under Windows. It all looks good when viewed in Windows. But I want this PDF to look the same on a Mac, and the resulting file size (94KB) would suggest that the font (size 460KB) is not getting embedded by Primo, perhaps because it is a native font. How will this look? Will the PDF file format resolve this, or will the format of my PDF be wang when viewed under OSX? Please note that I do not want to embed the font. I used a web-safe font to avoid this need, and it just so happens that the one I picked does not have the same name in OSX as in Windows.

  Hello my dear friends! We have a marvellous squid proxy with dansguardian for filetering and they both work just great. Is there any easy way to limit the total bandwidth usage? I'd like to set the max amount of squid users internet use to 1200 since our total band is 2000 and I need the rest to ensure other services such as voip to work without hiccups related to huge downloads on the "internet side" of our connection and similar issues. • Replacing sick NTP server source and re-synching (with internal time currently 2 minutes late)

  One of the external NTP servers (the primary one--currently) we're using as source seems to not be responding to NTP calls. Unfortunately, on our core router (Cisco 6509), the NTP functionality hasn't switched to the secondary NTP external server as it was expected. As a result, our core router which is pretty much our main internal NTP source is 2 minutes late. I'm planning to fix the external router issue by making the external NTP source be the one currently working. I'm wondering, how much will a 2 minute change affect my users and services? Specially since these days, we're heavily relying on certificate-based authentication. We're a Windows/Cisco shop.   Out of the blue, OpenSCAD decided to stop working for me on designs that previously rendered just fine. After playing around I found out that any time I use a precision greater than $fn=29 the program crashes with the message "openscad.exe has stopped working". I can use any precision 29 and below, but the second I adjust it to even 30 the program crashes. This is a major problem as before I was using a precision of 100, and without it the design's moving parts do not work on print. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program several times and haven't been able to fix the problem. I have watched the CPU during the calculations and it never reaches more than 35%. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this problem? I also have not changed computers or even the code. Thanks! I am using Windows 32 bit, Version 2013.06. The default version from the website.

  there is a bunch of servers connected to shared storage in a private LAN (10.x.x.x). this privateLAN is managed by a windows server (DHCP, DNS and directory services) these hosts need to be from outside of the datacenter Eg. Remote desktop. can the NIC2 on each of the hosts be connected to the other public LAN (compromising speed or security? what are improtant considerations: additional hardware? like switches? routing&DNS software? currently available hardware : Dell Powerconnect 6224 switch .... planning this for storage network. software: windows 2003 server for DHCP, DNS, A/D ? would it be more flexible to use Linux distributions like IPCOP, Untangle etc? all that I am looking for is good isolation between private and other networks, avoid DHCP, DNS, AD clashes.

• Is there a way to insert a formatted calculation into Excel 2010 without using an image?

  I am maintaining a list of database column names, notes, and their calculations in an Excel 2010 spreadsheet. The calculations are included so as to document how to derive the values for the various columns and not for calculations within the spreadsheet. I have been entering the calculations into the cells simply as unformatted text like so: 100 - ((FiscalYearRegionConsumption - BaselineRegionConsumption) / (GoalRegionConsumption - BaselineRegionConsumption)) * 100 However, for long and/or complex calculations this could become rather unreadable. To improve readability and comprehension I would like to "pretty" print the calculation in an Excel cell. This would result in formatting that would like like this: The only solution I have come up with is to: Write the calculation in another application such as Word Take a screenshot of said calculation Past the screenshot into Excel The primary concern with this approach is maintenance. Should the calculation change or need correction I have to update two different sources of information. Is there a better way included a formatted calculation into an Excel cell?

• mysql single database relocation

  I would like to know if it's possible to operate different databases on different filesystem locations. Background: we are a hosting service, which hosts mysql, web, and smtp to it's customer, but all our services (sql, smtp, http) are located in a different place. We are going to assign a single logical volume to a customer, which will accommodate the customer's mailing, weppages and (hopefully) sql database. Web pages and mailing are already covered, but I am not able to find a configuration setting which would enable me to specify the location of a database (the directory where mysql stores the DB). Let me please highlight, the target here is to relocate different databases to different locations in the filesystem, not moving them from a single place to an another (single) place. Also please do not bother answering with soft and hard symbolic links. ;) Thanks

• Schedule EC2 instances

  I want to be able to schedule some simple EC2 EBS backed instances (already configured) to start at 8am and stop at 4pm. This is only time I'll be using my integration server. Is there a simple services (paid or not) that I can use to handle this. All I found so far is to buy a cheap VPS at linode or somewhere and install ec2 tools and schedule via crontab, but what a PITA that is to. On the other end is something enterprisey like Rightscale but not my idea of simple.

  I recently discovered that Active Directory replication started failing about a month ago. If I attempt to Replicate Now from the failing domain controller, I receive The following error occurred during the attempt to synchronize the domain controllers: Access is denied. It is between two servers at a remote site. One is Windows 2003 and the other is Windows 2000; the Windows 2000 machines is experiencing the errors. The domain is older OUR_DOMAIN style. Attempts so far: I disabled Kerberos service on the Windows 2000 server and restarted RPC and RPC locater services have expected settings HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Rpc\ClientProtocols missing ncacn_nb_tcp on Windows 20003 server (added) Portqry reports okay Firewall disabled netdom resetpwd (and reboot) on Windows 2000 server.

• Port forwarding on D-Link DIR-615 super-slow, useless

  Hello I have replaced my old router with DIR-615 from D-Link, and now the port forwarding is so slow it makes the router practically useless. Accessing the router itself (admin UI) is without issues, no delay whatsoever. But when I try to access a service on another computer in the network the requests take minutes and minutes. (E.g. I can see source of my GWT-app main page, but loading additional CSS and JS files takes years.) If anyone could recommend any further diagnostics I should do to figure out what is happening it would be great. Few notes: happens with more services (web-app on Tomcat, viewing directory index via Apache) it does not make a difference whether the service is hosted on wired or wireless PC accessing the service on a localhost works fine turning off firewall on the target PC does not make difference either (makes sense) when I replace this router with the old one (both 192.168.1.1) everything works fine I see nothing suspicious in the router's log I believe I have the latest firmware (4.11) DIR-615 sucks, it already died once completely Regards Jarda Z.

• Reverse proxy using hop and RDP

  I am trying to connect from Vista to XP using RDP via reverse proxy using putty and an intermidiate host. There are myriad articles on the internet how to do it using vnc, ssh servers, winsshd, etc, but I can't find anything that helps me in this specific case. What I have: Windows XP host behind the firewall - 'destination' linux host running ssh on the internet - 'intermediate' windows host behind the firewall - 'source' All I want to do is open reverse tunnel from destination to intermidiate and use this tunnel for connecting back from the source. That should be simple to setup, however I just cannot make it. This is what I do: On 'destination', open putty session, create tunnel to 'intermediate' using following settings: source port 3389, destination is 'source:33389', direction is local On 'source', open putty session, create tunnel to 'intermediate'using following settings: source port 33389, destination is 'destination:33389', direction is local Finally, on source, open termnal services client and connect it to localhost:33389.Unfortunately it seems like packets do go somewhere but eventually client times out. Am I totally misunderstanding the concept? Please help!

• exported variable not persisted after script execution

  I'm facing a wierd issue. I've a vm with solaris 11, and trying to write some bash scripts. if, on the shell, I type : export TEST=aaa and subsequently run: set I correctly see a new environment variable named TEST whose value is aaa. If, however I do basically the same thing in a script. when the script terminates, I do not see the variable set. To make a concrete example, if in a file test.sh I have: #!/usr/bin/bash echo 1: $TEST #variable not defined yet, expect to print only 1: echo 2: $USER TEST=sss echo 3: $TEST export TEST echo 4: $TEST it prints: 1: 2: daniele 3: sss 4: sss and after its execution, TEST is not set in the shell. Am I missing something? I tried both to do export TEST=sss and the separate variable set/export with no difference.
