• Adding JPanel onto another JPanel after button click

  I'm using Netbeans IDE to make a gui application. I have a JFrame with a JPanel inside it. After a button click I want to display a different JPanel inside the first. The other JPanel is in a different file. How would I go about doing this? If this is not practical I don't mind replacing the first JPanel with the second one. I've tried the following but it doesn't seem to work. • Address calling class [Java]

  Hello! [I am rather new to Java and Object Oriented programming] I have an abstract class Moveable with the method abstract void move() which is extended by the class Bullet and the abstract class Character, and Character is extended by the class Survivor and the class Zombie. In Survivor and Bullet the move() method doesnt require any parameters while in the class Zombie the move() method depends on the actual position of the survivor. The survivor and multiple zombies are created in the class Gui. I wanted to access the survivor in Zombie - what's the best way of doing this? In Gui i wrote a method getSurvivor() but i don't see how to access this method in Zombie? I am aware that as a workaround i could just pass a [Survivor survivor] as parameter in move() and ignore it in Bullet and Survivor, but that feels so ... bad practice. Thank you for your time! • USB enumeration failure in ColdFire MCF52259

  Anybody with programming experience on the ColdFire line, please help! I'm using the CMX USB-Lite stack with the ColdFire MCF52259. For some reason, USB enumeration fails at the very first step, as soon as I enable the DP pull-up resistor. This is what I'm doing :- INT_ENB, OTG_INT_EN, ERR_ENB are set to 0x0 INT_STAT, OTG_INT_STAT and ERR_STAT are set to 0xff (This should clear all interrupts) In the Interrupt Status Register, bits 0 (Mask All) and 53 are made 0, all others are 1. TOK_DNE, USB_RST and STALL interrupts are enabled in INT_ENB. BDT base address is set. MCF_USB_CTL holds 0x1 PROBLEM: After the host issues the first reset (at which point I enable Control endpoint 0), instead of the expected Get Descriptor request I'm getting an endless series of resets. At least, that's what it looks like, because the TOK_DNE interrupt never triggers. Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

• Why is my app running

  I have compiled my iPhone app with setting (Device, Release). I install it on the test machine and it runs with no problem. Here's the problem. The app is linked to a C++ library. The compilation on the simulator has no errors. However the device compilation produces 568 errors, mostly about different visibilities w.r.t AppDelegate.o. They all look like: QL::Error::~Error()has different visibility (default) in /QL/build/Release-iphoneos/libQLLibrary.a(abcd.o) and (hidden) in /Programming/ObjC/Second/build/Second.build/Release-iphoneos/FG.build/Objects-normal/armv6/AppDelegate.o Why is this, and how can I stop the errors anyway?

• How will a search engine read data from my Ajax-based webapp?

  OK, not entirely related to programming, so I'm sorry. But I'd like to know about this: So I've got a webapp. There's one column where a list of results are fetched from the database. When you click one, jQuery fetches the information associated with that result and puts it into the second column - all without a refresh and using Ajax. Is it possible for Google to still read it etc.? I understand it can follow links... but presumably not Javascript actions etc.? If this is the case, what do other Ajax-heavy websites do about search engine optimisation? Jack

• Extending DOMDocument and DOMNode: problem with return object

  I'm trying to extend the DOMDocument class so as to make XPath selections easier. I wrote this piece of code: class myDOMDocument extends DOMDocument { function selectNodes($xpath){ $oxpath = new DOMXPath($this); return $oxpath->query($xpath); } function selectSingleNode($xpath){ return $this->selectNodes($xpath)->item(0); } } These methods return a DOMNodeList and a DOMNode object, respectively. What I'd like to do now is to implement similar methods to the DOMNode objects. But obviously if I write a class (myDOMNode) that extends DOMNode, I won't be able to use these two extra methods on the nodes returned by myDOMDocument because they're DOMNode (and not myDOMNode) objects. I'm rather a beginner in object programming, I've tried various ideas but they all lead to a dead-end. Any hints? Thanks a lot in advance.

• e-shop implementation: Status for Orders?

  Hello Again my fellow programmers out there, I'm designing and programming from scratch a online shop. It has a Module to manage "Orders" that are recieved via the frontend. I'm needing to have a status to know whats happening with an order in s certain moment, let's say the statuses are: Pending Payment Confirmed - Awaiting shipment Shipped Cancelled My question is a simple one, but is very important to decide on the store design, and is: What would you do so store this status: Would you create a column for it in the Orders table or would you just "calculate" the status of each order depending if payments has been recieved or shipments has been made for every order? (except I suppose for a is_cancelled column) What would be the best approach to model this kind of problem? PD: I even wish in the future to have these statuses configurable buy other clientes using the same software..

• Can HTTP URIs have non-ASCII characters?

  I tried to find this in the relevant RFC, IETF RFC 3986, but couldn't figure it. Do URIs for HTTP allow Unicode, or non-ASCII of any kind? Can you please cite the section and the RFC that supports your answer. NB: For those who might think this is not programming related - it is. It's related to an ISAPI filter I'm building. Addendum I've read section 2.5 of RFC 3986. But RFC 2616, which I believe is the current HTTP protocol, predates 3986, and for that reason I'd suppose it cannot be compliant with 3986. Furthermore, even if or when the HTTP RFC is updated, there still will be the issue of rationalization - in other words, does an HTTP URI support ALL of the RFC3986 provisos, including whatever is appropriate to include non US-ASCII characters?

• When using a package or framework is there a standard way to use version control?

  i.e. Do you put the whole package under VCS or just the components you are programming? Packages by there nature will get upgraded and that code will need to be added into the VCS, plus there is a lot of code that is static. Specifically I am going to be working on Joomla, adding and building modules, customising modules and the look and feel. Initially this will be just me but will expand to possibly two more developers as the project ramps up. My reaction would be just to VCS the lot, it means that i know it is all there and deployment via CI is easier(?). The alternative is to exclude the bulk of the code that is not being altered which could be error prone and laborious. As there is not a specific answer for this and i am looking for either experience or best practice advice i have marked it community wiki.

• What are the real-world benefits of declarative-UI languages such as XAML and QML?

  I'm currently evaluating QtQuick (Qt User Interface Creation Kit) which will be released as part of Qt 4.7. QML is the JavaScript-based declarative language behind QtQuick. It seems to be a very powerful concept, but I'm wondering if anybody that's made extensive use of other, more mature declarative-UI languages like XAML in WPF or Silverlight can give any insight into the real-world benefits that can be gained from this style of programming. Various advantages are often cited: Speed of development Forces separation between presentation and logic Better integration between coders and designers UI changes don't require re-compilation Also, are there any downsides? • Write data to an xml file.

  My aim is to write an XML file with few tags whose values are the regional language. I'm using Python to do this and using IDLE(Pythong GUI) for programming. While I try to write the words in an xmls file it gives the following error. UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode characters in position 0-4: ordinal not in range(128) For now, I'm not using any xml writer library instead I'm opening a file "test.xml" and writing the data into it. This error is encountered by the line: f.write("\t\" + data + "\"). If I replace the above write statement with print statement then it prints the data properly on Python Shell. I'm reading the data from an excel file which is not in the UTF8,16, or 32 encoding formats. Its in some other format. cp1252 is reading the data properly. Any help in getting this data writtent oan xml would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bob

• It is possible to call a servlet from a Java class?

  I'm using IBM WebSphere as my servlet container. My application has several servlets and Java classes. My intent is to call one of those servlets directly from a Java class. Doing some research I figured out that is possible to use the RequestDispatcher interface to achieve this. But it is necessary to pass the objects ServletRequest and ServletResponse as arguments to the method forward(). There is some way to bypass this safely and "nicely"? By "nicely" I meant to say preserving good programming and design patterns.

• How could the year 2010 be mistaken as a leap year? [closed]

  According to news reports such as this one, older Playstation 3 game consoles incorrectly considered the year 2010 to be a leap year. The problem persisted through most of the Monday, March 1, which older PlayStations thought was Feb. 29, 2010, a date that doesn't exist. The standard leap year formula states that a leap year is any year that is divisible by 4, but not by 100, except if divisible by 400. The year 2010 doesn't fit any of those criteria. Any idea what programming error would have caused this?

• What is the recommended toolchain for formatting XML DocBook?

  I've seen Best tools for working with DocBook XML documents, but my question is slightly different. Which is the currently recommended formatting toolchain - as opposed to editing tool - for XML DocBook? In Eric Raymond's 'The Art of Unix Programming' from 2003 (an excellent book!), the suggestion is XML-FO (XML Formatting Objects), but I've since seen suggestions here that indicated that XML-FO is no longer under development (though I can no longer find that question on StackOverflow, so maybe it was erroneous). Assume I'm primarily interested in Unix/Linux (including MacOS X), but I wouldn't automatically ignore Windows-only solutions. Is Apache's FOP the best way to go? Are there any alternatives?

• Server Development Tool?

  Hi, For my programming tasks I use about 2-3 remote servers to deploy and run my code against different conditions. This cannot be emulated locally as the server configuration requires powerful hardware. Most of time I need to stop service, update binareis, start service, view logs in realtime, download logs. Currently I'm doing this manually and over time this becomes a real pain in the ass, especially because the environment is not ideal in terms of network badwidth, reliability etc. I just wonder if someone from server programmers have the similar problems and how do you bear with them. Any special tools/hints/secrets?

• Does my AMD-based machine use little endian or big endian?

  I'm going though a computers system course and I'm trying to establish, for sure, if my AMD based computer is a little endian machine? I believe it is because it would be Intel-compatible. Specifically, my processor is an AMD 64 Athlon x2. I understand that this can matter in C programming. I'm writing C programs and a method I'm using would be affected by this. I'm trying to figure out if I'd get the same results if I ran the program on an Intel based machine (assuming that is little endian machine). Finally, let me ask this: Would any and all machines capable of running Windows (XP, Vista, 2000, Server 2003, etc) and, say, Ubuntu Linux desktop be little endian? Thank You, Frank

• Hide script extension

  I have a html form that posts to a python script test.py. If someone tries to access the script directly, it redirects them to the form. I not using a web framework, just straight python cgi programming. My website is hosted on a shared hosting provider that allows me access to a .htaccess file. I wanted to know if there was a way to have the form post to the script and in the address bar show mydomain.com/test/ and not mydomain.com/test.py ? Thanks.

• USB interface barcode scanners

  Not exactly a programming question, but close. I'll try my luck anyway. The keyboard wedge barcode scanner inserts the translation device between the reader and the keyboard. Data sent through a wedge appears as if it was typed into the computer, while the keyboard itself remains fully functional. Because a computer using a keyboard wedge can't tell the difference between data that is entered by a scanning device, or data that is entered by keyboard typing, a wedge can be used to easily add barcode reading capability to an existing computer without modifying software applications. I'd like to know if all USB interface barcode scanners automatically translate digital signals from a barcode reader into keyboard strokes for a applications just like wedge or is USB different from wedge? • IntellIJ editor doesn't appear

  I updated my IntellIJ install to the latest version (11.1.4) and now the Editor window doesn't appear. Double-clicking on the file, jump-to-source, nothing happens. No error message, it just doesn't appear. If I double-click on an xml layout file the preview window works, but no Editor window. Have installed and reinstalled; went back to an earlier version and it doesn't work there either. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Update: Editor works if I create a new project.
