  • What languages should I learn before I go to college? [closed]

    I've been working with PHP, MySQL, and some html for the past 3-4 years now just as a hobby. I'm only 19 and college is going to come soon, I want to go for Web and Software development and/or Network Security and Administration, I know the networking is a whole different ballpark, but as for programming, which languages do you suggest I get under my belt before college? I was thinking the C languages (C++, C#), Java, .NET; Should I learn any more Server Side Scripting languages? Python, Perl, Ruby? I used to be somewhat familiar with writing Java, but haven't written in Java in a good while, what would you suggest? Thanks!

    Possible Duplicates: Why did Facebook, Wordpress, vBulletin use PHP/MySQL? Why did Facebook use C++ beside PHP? While Facebook chose PHP and Twitter chose Ruby on Rails, I stopped and asked myself a question! why did they chose PHP and Ruby on Rails? Why not ASP.NET or Java? Is it because of bieng open source? or what?. I just want to know the right reason so I can examine their vision and decide which technology should I use if I want to build something unique.

  • Relationship between databases [closed]

    Hi I am getting ready to create my first web aplication.I have some knowledge of databases but I have never used databases with relationship created beetween them and also I am not sure how to acces the data in the relationship.My experience is limited to basic CRUD applications and working on simple tables with no realtionship using PHP and MySql. For example I will be creating a login system and for each user I would like to create a profile page that store different data(name , address , profile image etc.).Some of the info will be the same in both tables so there is no point in creating the same table twice. What I would like is if anyone can tell of some tutorials so I can better understand the concept?

  • How do I login to Sphider?

    Has anyone else here used Sphider? I am able to install everything (exactly as instructed here)and change the password, but unable to login at the login screen. Whenever I login, it just refreshes the page, whether the credentials are correct or not. I have looked at the forum and others have the same problem too, but no one has provided a solution. So if any of you have tried Sphider and had the same problem your input would be much appreciated.   • Using IIS Application Request Routing (ARR) for ASP.NET MVC

    I use a simple ASP.NET MVC web (the template you use when you create a new site) and the web works as expected in my live environment. I now try to use IIS Application Request Routing version 2. I have a rule that send all reuqests to a different server that match a rule. The settings are a bit like this: http://blogs.iis.net/wonyoo/archive/2008/07/09/application-request-routing-arr-as-a-reverse-proxy.aspx My rule is just a bit different it is /shop(.*). Only requests that contain shop are send to a different server. I have to use rewrite, not redirect (The same as in the Picture) This works as long as the web the original requests go to is no ASP.NET MVC web. I tried to use a plain htm file in the webfolder and it worked. If put a compiled ASP.NET application into the webfolder it worked. But as soon as I put an ASP.NET MVC web into the folder, request arr served by this application. My understanding is that the ARR should kick in before the web application gets the chance to handle the request. Did anybody use ARR sucessfully as a reverse proxy for a ASP.NET MVC web? EDIT Here is the resulting web config when the rewrite roule is entered. The first CSC command line does not have an /resource options, the second has two /resource options on the command line. This web service must dlls of .NET Framework 3.5 (I have error about System.Linq using when I try to browse the web site) The only place I found where it is possible to change .NET Framework version is application pools management, but The only two options I have are: no management code and .NET Framework 2. In add/remove programs I have .NET Framework 3.5 installed and event does to it repair and iisreset, but I still have only to options in application pools management. Any ideas? Thank you for ahead.

  • Eventlet or gevent or Stackless + Twisted, Pylons, Django and SQL Alchemy

    We're using Twisted extensively for apps requiring a great deal of asynchronous io. There are some cases where stuff is cpu bound instead and for that we spawn a pool of processes to do the work and have a system for managing these across multiple servers as well - all done in Twisted. Works great. The problem is that it's hard to bring new team members up to speed. Writing asynchronous code in Twisted requires a near vertical learning curve. It's as if humans just don't think that way naturally. We're considering a mixed approach perhaps. Maybe do the xmlrpc server part and process management in Twisted still but the other stuff in code that at least looks synchronous while not being as such. Then again I like explicit over implicit so hmmm. Anyway onto greenlets - how well does that stuff work? So there's Stackless and as you can see from my Gallentean avatar I'm well aware of the tremendous success in it's use for CCP's flagship EVE Online game first hand. What about Eventlet or gevent? Well for now only Eventlet works with Twisted. However gevent claims to be faster since it's not a pure python implementation it instead uses libevent. It also has fewer idiosyncrasies and defects supposedly. The documentation there is minimal in comparison to Eventlet and it's maintained by 1 guy as far as I can tell. This makes me leery but all great projects start this way so... Then there's PyPy - I haven't even finished reading about that one yet - just saw it in this thread: Drawbacks of Stackless. So confusing - I'm wondering what the heck to do - sounds like Eventlet is probably the best bet but is it really stable enough? Anyone out there have any experience with it? Should we go with Stackless instead as it's been around and is proven technology - just like Twisted is as well - and they do work together nicely. But still I hate having to have a separate version of Python to do this. what to do.... This somewhat obnoxious blog entry hit the nail on the head for me though: Asynchronous IO for Grownups We're stuck using MySQL as well - I never knew how great PostgreSQL was until having had to work on a production OLTP system in MySQL instead - but that's another story. But if that monkey patch thing really works then wow. Just wow.

This is part of a Content Management System and the users do not know how to resize photos, so I need to resize the image to a set size after it is uploaded. How can this be done with PHP?   • Chrome Extension - Cross-Origin XMLHttpRequest - Returning HTML/JSON

    Hi everyone, I hope you can help me :) I've created a Chrome extension (my first one) and I'm having some difficulty auto-populating a <select> with <option> that are being returned. the default_popup page is index.htm. I have two <select> (listboxes? can't remember the name) boxes. When a user first clicks the extension, it performs a XMLHttpRequest to a php script and get's a list of names from a MySQL database. It returns (onLoad) the list in the form of: <option>blah</option> When a user selects an option from the first listbox/select, it performs another XMLHttpRequest and auto-populates the second listbox/select. Then when a user selects an option from the second listbox it will eventually populate a few details further down the page. I've been testing by just running the index.htm file and seeing if just the code works correctly, which it does. However when trying to view it from the extension, it doesn't work. The onLoad doesn't fill in the first listbox, and selecting an option (one that I typed in the box for testing purposes) from the first listbox doesn't populate the second listbox. I thought maybe it was a permissions error, so I tried adding the domain to the manifest.json file; but I appear to be getting an error in the manifest.json file after doing so. Do I need to be returning the <option> elements encoded as JSON? If so, I'm completely cluesless as how to do that.

  • Using MongoDB with Ruby On Rails and the Mongomapper plugin

    Hello, i am currently trying to learn Ruby On Rails as i am a long-time PHP developer so i am building my own community like page. I have came pritty far and have made the user models and suchs using MySQL. But then i heard of MongoDB and looked in to it a little bit more and i find it kinda nice. So i have set it up and i am using mongomapper for the connection between rails and MongoDB. And i am now using it for the News page on the site. I also have a profile page for every User which includes their own guestbook so other users can come to their profile and write a little message to them. My thought now is to change the User models from using MySQL to start using MongoDB. I can start by showing how the models for each User is set up. The user model: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :guestbook, :class_name => "User::Guestbook" The Guestbook model model: class User::Guestbook < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user has_many :posts, :class_name => "User::Guestbook::Posts", :foreign_key => "user_id" And then the Guestbook posts model: class User::Guestbook::Posts < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :guestbook, :class_name => "User::Guestbook" I have divided it like this for my own convenience but now when i am going to try to migrate to MongoDB i dont know how to make the tables. I would like to have one table for each user and in that table a "column" for all the guestbook entries since MongoDB can have a EmbeddedDocument. I would like to do this so i just have one Table for each user and not like now when i have three tables just to be able to have a guestbook. So my thought is to have it like this: The user model: class User include MongoMapper::Document one :guestbook, :class_name => "User::Guestbook" The Guestbook model model: class User::Guestbook include MongoMapper::EmbeddedDocument belongs_to :user many :posts, :class_name => "User::Guestbook::Posts", :foreign_key => "user_id" And then the Guestbook posts model: class User::Guestbook::Posts include MongoMapper::EmbeddedDocument belongs_to :guestbook, :class_name => "User::Guestbook" But then i can think of one problem.. That when i just want to fetch the user information like a nickname and a birthdate then it will have to fetch all the users guestbook posts. And if each user has like a thousand posts in the guestbook it will get really much to fetch for the system. Or am i wrong? Do you think i should do it any other way?
