• How to attract modders to your game?

  I am developing a game, but as I am working on it alone, the amount of content I can create is very limited. Because of that I want my game to be modded, for this purpose I am planning to create a complete modding API which would be exposed for lua scripting. I would also create tutorials to get people started. And the "Original" game would also be a "mod"(similar to Warcraft III maps) . My question is: What can a developer do to encourage modding of its game? PS: my game is a sandbox-ish multiplayer survival(most things are procedural).

• Any legal issue in developing app similar to others?

  There is a game I want to develop for mobile devices e.g. cellphone/tablet. I have been looking for this game and couldn't find it so I decide to just do it on my own. But I'm worried that there will be legal issues. I'm sorry but I do not know what is the process in doing this. I noticed for example the game Bejeweled Blitz. If I develop something similar, do I have to contact the developer and ask for permission if I develop a game with similar rules but use shapes rather than jewels? The original game exists only on Windows for free. If I develop the game, exactly similar rules but different display, am I allowed to sell it? Thanks...

Firefox have not facility to stand alone installation but here is a trick to enjoy their nightly and stable version both. make a folder anywhere in your system. make two folder the name depend on your choice. in first install the Firefox Nightly and second install the current stable version 3.6.12 now the application already add to your start menu otherwise add them manually. now you can use both version nightly and stable. if you deug your web application in IDE such as visual studio or other then they force to open the default browser set in your system they open the version who you use last time. if you use last time nightly then they open your web-application in nightly otherwise in current stable version.

  I am a java developer (web app and standalone applications) who knows JavaScript, HTML, CSS and has mostly worked on Web applications. I have no knowledge of C/C++ or any other lower level languages. I feel like I should strengthen my CS basics by learning a fundamental language. Should it be C or C++? I am also inclined to learn Objective-C. Does it need basics of C or C++? Or should I go for new languages like Python, Google's Go etc. I know this is a cliche question asked very frequently, but I can use some help here.

• How to ensure that a member variable is initialized before calling a class method

  There's a class with a parametrized constructor that initializes a member variable. All public methods of the class then use this member variable to do something. I want to ensure that the caller always creates an object using the parametrized constructor (there is also a setter for this member variable) and then call that object's methods. In essence, it should be impossible for the caller to call any method without setting a value to the member variable (either by using the parametrized constructor or the setter). Currently, a caller can simply make an object using the default constructor and then call that object's method - I want to avoid checking whether or not the member variable is set in each and every one of the 20-odd methods of the class (and throw an exception if it is not). Though a runtime solution is acceptable (better than the one I mentioned above); a compile-time solution is preferable so that any developer will not be allowed to make that mistake and then waste hours debuggging it!

• Why do you have to manually type variable names while debugging?

  I've seen this in a lot of IDEs (even in the most popular and heavily used ones, like Visual Studio): if you want to watch a variable's value, you have to manually type its name in the Watches section of the debugger. Why can't there just be a list of all of them with checkboxes next to them ? The developer can then just check the box next to the one he wants to watch and that's it. Variables with identical names can probably be numbered in some way (for example a, b, x(1), x(2), c, etc. I've seen some exceptions to this (NetBeans or BlueJ), but there are exceptions to everything, right ? Maybe it's a stupid question, maybe not, but I've always wondered why this is so.

• IIS and content caching

  I'm a web developer and administer of a Windows 2008R2 Could Instance with IIS 7. I recently made an update to our website, but when I revisited the website, the website was being viewed with old stylings. I did a refresh (shift + reload button in Firefox) and of course the website displayed as it should. I didn't worry about it, until my client had the same issue in Safari. So, my question, in general, is, how do I prevent this from happening again, and yet still afford some caching of our site? I noticed we did not have content expiration set up on our webserver sites, so I've set that up, but did I really need to? I've also looked at Etags, and, honestly, it's hard for me to know whether or not I should use them or not. One comment I read somewhere there isn't really any issue with Etags scenarios in IIS (even in webfarms)... but, I dunno. Anybody have any suggestions, links, info? Thanks.

  We have a large team of developers and testers. The ratio is one tester for every one developer. We have full bug tracking and reporting systems in place. We have test plans in place. Every change to the product, the testing team is involved in the design of the feature and are included in the development process as much as possible. We build in small iterative blocks, using scrum methodology and every scrum they are included in, including the grooming sessions etc. But every release of the product, they miss even the most simple and obvious defects. How can we improve this?

  I am studying the gameloop used in Replica Island to understand a bit about Android game development. The main loop has the below logic... GameThread.java (note the variable names in sample code dont match exact source code) while (!finished) { if (objectManager != null) { renderer.waitDrawingComplete(); //Do more gameloop stuff after drawing is complete... } } I was curious to see what waitDrawingComplete actually does, but found its just an empty syncrhonized method! I guess it does nothing, am I missing something here? • Using a GPL licensed library in a commercial app

  I develop an android application and in my app I use a libary (jar) that I download from the internet. This jar is open-source under the "GNU General Public License v2". I tried to read the text of the license but had difficulty understanding it. My question is: can I use this libary without changing nothing in the jar in a commercial application? I will be making profit from selling my app which uses this GPL-ed .jar file. If possible, I would like to avoid converting my application to open-source.

  I recently bought Samsung Galaxy Note II on android 4.1. It was my idea to try to turn it into a pc and I bought a micro-keyboard for the same purpose. I had hoped there would be an app for OpenOffice, but there isn't. Now i see that ubuntu may be installed on smart phones. I already have ubuntu - including OpenOffice - on my laptop. My question is: is it possible to install ubuntu to galaxy note II, and if so, does it include office programs and other ubuntu programs? • Can Agile/Scrum be used by 1 or 2 developers?

  Everything I've been reading and researching up to this point describes how Agile/Scrum works great with teams of about 4 to 6 members, maybe even more. In my current shop, we have about 8 developers or so, but given the nature of the volume of projects and the number of departments we support, we never have more than 1 or 2 folks assigned to a given project. Can I still use Agile/Scrum with a team of 1 or 2 developers? I'm working on making the pitch to my manager to start working with this methodology, but I need to be able to explain how to scale things back for a small developer crew, or convince them to make sure we get more members on a given project.

So aside from C# I want to learn a new language. Time is precious and I want to give my focus to a language which have a future. My language list is: Scala (Powerful usage in Twitter) Go (Getting popular and channels are pretty awesome) Erlang (Stable server side programs. This option brings in a complimentary color in various shades along with the main color that you select on the color wheel. You also have the option of specifying various adjustments to the schema. You can make it pastel, more contrast, less contrast, gray tones, etc. You can also view a preview page as a light page or a dark page to see how the colors might be applied.  Once you have everything the way you want it, you can switch over to the final tab and get the color list. Now none of us have an excuse for questionable color combinations.
