Prototype hide/show

Hi, I am a Javascript/jQuery/Prototype newcomer and I have a page that has a Prototype function to get info from a database and put it into some input fields. This was made before I came to work on this site and now I've been asked to add a hide/show div function. I tried it in jQuery and there were clashes with the two frameworks, (as found in my previous question). My question now is, how would I go about building a show/hide function in Prototype? I think it will be easier to do it this way than to re-build the info grabber. The page I want to add this to is here. (the green "ny kunde" button should show the div directly below it newCustomer. I've got a bunch of websites that use a few Prototype/Scriptaculous plugins such as lightbox and modalbox, hence include references to these two libraries on various pages. I now need to implement a slideshow on every page, and to follow suit, I need a Prototype cycle or slideshow plugin. The requirements are fairly simple: images should fade-in/out every N seconds four controls: prev, pause, play, next i'd prefer to add images to the slideshow via JavaScript; not by adding too many tags Can any one suggest an existing plugin that can be customized easily and is not bloated like most of the other plugins. Lightbox: how to parse the lightbox dynamically loaded html content (AJAX)

hi, I'm using a (modal) lightbox on a page of my website to display my nodes. I'm using some plugins such as an external jquery-plugin for tooltips and the drupal plugin jQuery Media (to load flash video player for some video file-fields). These plugins are loaded when the main page load and they parse the html content of the page. When I dynamically load the lightbox (and I use AJAX to update its content) the html inside the lightbox is not parse... so no tooltips, no videos. how can I solve this ? Should I trigger the plugins again from Lightbox callback function ? Or should I use something else instead of the lightbox ? Thanks

Returning a JSON view in combination with a boolean

What i would like to accomplish is that a partiel view contains a form. This form is posted using JQuery $.post. After a successfull post javascript picks up the result and uses JQuery's html() method to fill a container with the result. However now I don't want to return the Partial View, but a JSON object containing that partial view and some other object (Success - bool in this case). I tried it with the following code: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Edit(int id, Item item) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { try { // ... return Json(new { Success = true, PartialView = PartialView("Edit", item) }); } catch(Exception ex) { // ... } } return Json(new { Success = false, PartialView = PartialView("Edit", item) }); } However I don't get the HTML in this JSON object and can't use html() to show the result. I tried using this method to render the partial as Html and send that. However this fails on the RenderControl(tw) method with a: The method or operation is not implemented.

MVC2 Client-Side Validation for injected Ajax response

Hi, I have the following scenario for an MVC 2 website. The user checks a radio. I make a jQuery GET to retrieve some html (partial view + view model). The view-model is annotated with validation attributes. I need client-side validation for the new html's inputs. I tried placing the following line in the partial view: <% Html.EnableClientValidation(); % I was naive. Also for the obtained html I use jQuery's .html to populate my placeholder, which also would execute the javascript. Not that there is any. Is is possible to update the page's validation logic and metadata after the ajax call ? Any ideas (beside remote client side validation) ? Thanks in advance.

How do you handle very old browsers on your site?

Hi. We have a non-profit web site that got about 5 million hits in May. Of those, about 5,700 were from IE 5.x or lower; about 4,000 were from folks with Netscape 4.x or lower. We know that the current site's layout works for newer browsers and we're testing it on IE6 as well (along with Chrome, Opera, Safari, and Firefox). How do you handle the folks with the older browsers? Because of jQuery libraries and such, the pages might not function correctly on those old browsers. Is there an easy way to show a text-only version on browsers that can't handle the CSS and jQuery goodies? How do large sites handle this sort of thing? I've used the @embed to hide the stylesheet from Netscape 4.x, but not sure beyond that.

Photo uploading via email

I'd like to be able to upload photos via email, which I've seen (and used) on eat.ly and meetups.jquery.com but I haven't been able to work out how to do this, does anyone have a solution? Essentially I believe the process should be something like this: 1) user adds picture to email on mobile device then send to a specific email address, say '[email protected]' 2) email server, cron job or something else looks at the senders address and tells it to add the attachement to that account 3) photo shows up on users profile page I run Apache servers, with MySQL, PHP, and a JQuery framework. I have email servers running Courier, and I missing anything?

Hi I have a javascript variable containing escaped HTML. If I use jQuery to and do this: $(document.body).append(valueToInsert) It all works fine. Bad thing is, that I cannot use jQuery as this code will be added to sites I'm not in control of using some "already-implemented" script includes. Does someone have a trick? If jQuery can do it, it must be possible? I had another issue in Opera. Executing <script> elements inserted with .innerHTML

I've got a script that inserts some content into an element using innerHTML. The content could for example be: <script type="text/javascript">alert('test');</script> <strong>test</strong> Problem is that the code inside the <script> tag doesn't get executed. I googled it a bit but there were no apparent solutions. If I inserted the content using jQuery $(element).append(content);the script parts got eval'd before being injected into the DOM. Has anyone got a snippet of code that executes all the <script> elements? The jQuery code was a bit complex so I couldn't really figure out how it was done.

ASP.NET MVC: Posting JSON to Controller

I've got this in my controller: [HttpPost] public void UpdateLanguagePreference(string languageTag) { if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(languageTag)) { throw new ArgumentNullException("languageTag"); } ... } And have this jQuery code POSTing to the controller: jQuery.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: '/Config/UpdateLanguagePreference', contentType: 'application/json; charset=utf-8', data: '{ "languageTag": "' + selectedLanguage + '" }' }); When I try to the code, however, I get the error: Server Error in '/' Application. Value cannot be null. Parameter name: languageTag What's the problem? Isn't this how to POST JSON to an MVC Controller? I can examine the POST using Fiddler and see that the request is correct. For some reason, UpdateLanguagePreference() is getting a null or empty string.

Problem With View Helpers

I wrote few custom view helpers but I have a little trouble using them. '/css/reset.css'); $this->view->addHelperPath('My/View/Helper', 'My_View_Helper'); } Then the view helpers don't work. Why is that? It's too troublesome to add the path in every controller action. Tabbed javascript widget for a Rails app

A user registers on our Rails app and they're given javascript to embed a widget in their website. The widget has a tabbed interface, like the JQuery tabs http://stilbuero.de/jquery/tabs_3/. iFrames have been tested, but the widget form factor and cross-domain policy negates the use of iframes. The widget is very dynamic and will often update the DOM with new content - and because of cross-domain policy, it looks as though JSONP is necessary. I understand that 'widget.js.erb' needs to create the widget layout, reference a stylesheet, render the tabs, etc - but once a tab is clicked, how does the widget request the content from the Rails app and render it in the DOM?

Symfony : ajax call cause server to queue next queries

Hello, I've a problem with my application when an ajax call on the server takes too much time : it queue all the others queries from the user until it's done server side (I realized that canceling the call client side has no effect and the user still have to wait). Here is my test case : <script type="text/javascript" src="jquery-1.4.1.min.js"></script> <a href="another-page.php">Go to another page on the same server</a> <script type="text/javascript"> url = 'http://localserver/some-very-long-complex-query'; $.get(url); </script> So when the get is fired and then after I click on the link, the server finish serving the first call before bringing me to the other page. My problem is that I want to avoid this behavior. I'm on a LAMP server and I'm looking in a way to inform the server that the user aborted the query with function like connection_aborted(), do you think that's the way to go ? Also, I know that the longest part of this PHP script is a MySQL query, so even if I know that connection_aborted() can detect that the user cancel the call, I still need to check this during the MySQL query... I'm not really sure that PHP can handle this kind of "event". So if you have any better idea, I can't wait to hear it. Thank you. Update : After further investigation, I found that the problem happen only with the Symfony framework (that I omitted to precise, my bad). It seems that an Ajax call lock any other future call. It maybe related to the controller or the routing system, I'm looking into it. Also for those interested by the problem here is my new test case : -new project with Symfony 1.4.3, default configuration, I just created an app and a default module. -jquery 1.4 for the ajax query. Create and Call an ASP.NET Asynchronous Web Service and call it from JavaScript

Environment: ASP.NET web applicaition jQuery, ASP.NET AJAX Currently using ASP.NET Web Services The title says it all. One, how do i create an ASP.NET web service that is asynchronous? I've seen many articles, that show example with IAsyncResult and BeginMyWebServiceMethod and EndMyWebServiceMethod, some using ThreadPool etc. I would just like to know what is the simplest way to make an asynchronous web service method call (ideally without having to implement other classes, if possible). To me it should be as simple as adding an attribute to the method (but I think that is wishful thinking), e.g. public SomeWebService : WebService { [Asynchronous] public static bool SomeCheck() { // code } } I'm open to using WCF if that makes it easier (we converted to ASP.NET 3.5 around Christmas time). Once I have the asynchronous web service created, what is the best way to call it from client-side script? Via jQuery's $ajax or ASP.NET's auto generated class for a web service that is script method?

jCarousel not working properly within tabbed menu

Hi everybody, I'm riding three different jCarousel ul, one in each target of a tabbed menu designeb by Yetii. The problem issue is that the one in the first target works well, whereas the remaining two show just a slice of the first picture and slide soon onto a back frame. The jCarousel is initialized by a class as the behaviour required is the same for all targets: jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery('.jcarousel-skin-tango').jcarousel({ wrap: 'circular', //size:8, scroll:1, animation:.10, auto:5, }); }); The ul have different id. I'm no newbie to programming, but I'm making the move to a career in web development, and I've noticed that so many job postings have different combinations of skill requirements: (PHP, C#, XML, XHTML/CSS, ASP, .NET, jQuery, YUI, Joomla, Ruby, Perl, Python, Java, Javascript... the list goes on.) As of now, I've started learning XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, and mySQL, but with so many combinations, I want to plan ahead to have a marketable combination of skills as early on as possible. Am I on the right path? What is vital for a marketable web programmer's arsenal? Thanks for your thoughts.

How can I try a new language or framework without installing it?

With so many languages and frameworks that exist, and with new ones appearing all the time, I don't have the time to download, install, and configure each one to evaluate it. In the past I've run across webapps that allow one to write or paste code into a window, and see the results in realtime in the browser, usually in a tutorial setting. What are your favorite sandbox sites for a given technology? Edit: @fretj provided the link to the excellent Google Code Playground (+1 upvote), but I thought that it was just for experimenting with Google's own apps (Search, Maps, Earth, Language, etc). But it turns out that it contains a few hidden gems: In addition to their apps, you can try out the many Javascript libraries that they host including jQuery, jQuery UI, MooTools, Dojo, and Prototype Scriptaculous. They're all hidden under the Libraries category in the "Pick an API" box. I overlooked the category because I thought it was for an app called Google Libraries. There's also a Javascript category for Javascript itself.

Precise explanation of JavaScript <-> DOM circular reference issue

One of the touted advantages of jQuery.data versus raw expando properties (arbitrary attributes you can assign to DOM nodes) is that jQuery.data is "safe from circular references and therefore free from memory leaks". An article from Google titled "Optimizing JavaScript code" goes into more detail: The most common memory leaks for web applications involve circular references between the JavaScript script engine and the browsers' C++ objects' implementing the DOM (e.g. between the JavaScript script engine and Internet Explorer's COM infrastructure, or between the JavaScript engine and Firefox XPCOM infrastructure). It lists two examples of circular reference patterns: DOM element → event handler → closure scope → DOM DOM element → via expando → intermediary object → DOM element However, if a reference cycle between a DOM node and a JavaScript object produces a memory leak, doesn't this mean that any non-trivial event handler (e.g. onclick) will produce such a leak? I don't see how it's even possible for an event handler to avoid a reference cycle, because the way I see it: The DOM element references the event handler. The event handler references the DOM (either directly or indirectly). In any case, it's almost impossible to avoid referencing window in any interesting event handler, short of writing a setInterval loop that reads actions from a global queue. Can someone provide a precise explanation of the JavaScript ↔ DOM circular reference problem? Things I'd like clarified: What browsers are effected? A comment in the jQuery source specifically mentions IE6-7, but the Google article suggests Firefox is also affected. Are expando properties and event handlers somehow different concerning memory leaks? Or are both of these code snippets susceptible to the same kind of memory leak? // Create an expando that references to its own element. var elem = document.getElementById('foo'); elem.myself = elem; // Create an event handler that references its own element. var elem = document.getElementById('foo'); elem.onclick = function() { elem.style.display = 'none'; }; If a page leaks memory due to a circular reference, does the leak persist until the entire browser application is closed, or is the memory freed when the window/tab is closed?
