• Redirect application's graphical output in Windows Vista/7 (with DWM)

  I want to create a desktop manager that takes informations of all running applications including states and screenshots to display and manipulate them in my virtual space (probably in 3D). It can be considered as another layer of abstraction on top of Windows itself. Because many native Windows Vista/7 features like Flip 3D and Live Thumbnails are able to show each window's activities in real-time e.g. video keeps playing in taskbar's thumbnail, I think DWM allows an application to redirect its output to somewhere else or some special processes are able to collect other applications' graphical outputs (maybe of child processes only). Has Microsoft released a set of public APIs to do so? If not, is it technically possible? And is it easier if I limit my scope to just .NET applications with WPF?

• Are there cross-platform tools to write XSS attacks directly to the database?

  I've recently found this blog entry on a tool that writes XSS attacks directly to the database. It looks like a terribly good way to scan an application for weaknesses in my applications. I've tried to run it on Mono, since my development platform is Linux. Unfortunately it crashes with a System.ArgumentNullException deep inside Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary and I seem to be unable to find sufficient information about the software (it seems to be a single-shot project, with no homepage and no further development). Is anyone aware of a similar tool? Preferably it should be: cross-platform (Java, Python, .NET/Mono, even cross-platform C is ok) open source (I really like being able to audit my security tools) able to talk to a wide range of DB products (the big ones are most important: MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, ...)

• CF - Mobile Managed Gestures

  Im looking for a nice demo/sample using Windows Mobile Managed Gestures. I have a main view that contains a single panel. Every item in the panel is another panel containing pictureBox and a label. I would like to implement scrooling (finger flicking) to avoid using thin scroolers. Are the Windows Mobile Managed Gestures the right solution to get this working, if so can some one provide me with a begginers demo? I downloaded the source code from http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/gestureswm/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=3438 but i would need a simple example using this source. Also a question ... does this work only on 6.5? Even if i got this working is there a way to support this in 6.0 ? thanx!

• Why is this if statement failing?

  I'm working on an existing class that is two steps derived from System.Windows.Forms.Combo box. The class overrides the Text property thus: public override string Text { get { return this.AccessibilityObject.Value; } set { if (base.Text != value) { base.Text = value; } } } The reason given for that "get" is this MS bug: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814346 However, I'm more interested in the fact that the "if" doesn't work. There are times where "base.Text != value" is true and yet pressing F10 steps straight to the closing } of the "set" and the Text property is not changed. I've seen this both by just checking values in the debugger, and putting a conditional breakpoint on that only breaks when the "if" statement's predicate is true. How on earth can "if" go wrong? The class between this and ComboBox doesn't touch the Text property. The bug above shouldn't really be affecting anything - it says it's fixed in VS2005. Is the debugger showing different values than the program itself sees?

• In native C++, how does one use a SqlCe .sdf database?

  Is there a simple way, without .NET? I've found some libraries but none for SqlCe 3.5. There is http://sqlcehelper.codeplex.com/ but it's far from done, since a major feature like using a password is not yet implemented. I've looked at the source and it uses OLEdb to handle the database. The offical Microsoft Northwind example (that is shipped with SQL Compact 3.1, but not with 3.5) also doesn't work, I've tried setting it up with no success. Actually I don't have a sample working code. Was anyone able to set it up paired with a passworded .sdf? What are the alternatives? Thanks.

• Checking COM Port Availability in C#

  Hello. My C# application populates a comboBox with the COM ports found on the system. I would like the mark the COM ports that are in use as such. I know that I can use try / catch blocks to attempt to open every COM port, but I was wondering if there is a more graceful way to do this. Perhaps using a WMI query? I am using Microsoft Visual C# 2008 Express Edition (.NET 2.0). Any thoughts or suggestions you may have would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Is it possible to use DLR in a .NET 3.5 website project?

  I'm trying to evaluate an expression stored in a database i.e. "if (Q1 ==2) {result = 3.1;} elseif (Q1 ==3){result=4.1;} else result = 5.9;" Rather than parsing it myself I'm trying to use the DLR. I'm using version .92 from the Codeplex repository and my solution is a .NET 3.5 website; and I'm having conflicts between the System.Core and Microsoft.Scripting.ExtenstionAttribute .dll's. Error = { Description: "'ExtensionAttribute' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Runtime.CompilerServices'.", File: "InternalXmlHelper.vb" } At this time I cannot upgrade to .NET 4.0 and make significant use of the .net 3.5 features (so downgrading is not an option).   From Excel, I need to open an Access database and run one of the database's macros. I'm using Excel and Access 2007. Each time I run this, I get the following error: Runtime error '2485': Microsoft Access Office can't find the object 'RunQueries.' I have also tried: appAccess.DoCmd.RunMacro "RunQueries" and I get the same errors message. Any idea how to do this? By the way, I could go into a long explanation about why I need to do this, but let me just say that I've already argued against it, and I have to do it this way (meaning, I have to use Excel as a frontend to open several Access dbs and run their macros).

• Lock Question - When is an Update (U) lock issued?

  We are trying to resolve a deadlock problem. The transaction that is getting rolled back is attempting to issue an Update (U) lock on a resource that another transaction has an Exclusive (X) lock on. According to Books Online (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175519.aspx), an Update lock is supposed to prevent deadlocks, not cause them. So, my question is, why/when is an Update lock applied to a resource? We're a little confused about this because the resource that is attempting to have the Update lock applied to will not be updated by the process that is having the transaction rolled back. • Best language to use when exporting an excel file

  I want to write a macro program that takes in data from a text file and then arranges it in a specific manner in an excel file. I don't know which language has the best features for dealing with Excel. I prefer java, and I see someone made an api called JExcelApi, but I'm not sure about it's capabilities. I would like to be able to generate a graph automatically in excel based on the data in a certain column. Is this possible in any language? I would guess that Microsoft's VB or C# would have an advanced feature such as this, but I'm not sure. Thanks.

• Where is App.config?

  I'm trying to set up logging with Microsoft's Enterprise Library (log4net seems to be a dead project). I'm using VB .NET 2008 and VS 2008. I've searched all over the MSDN documentation, CodePlex docs (including the Hands-On labs that installed and then vanished), and online tutorials to no avail. They all refer to a mysterious "configuration file" or "App.config" that I can't find and can't seem to add. I even tried adding a new text file and renaming it "App.config" but that only made VS 2008 spit out a red wavy line on a blank file. Any suggestions for finding the elusive app.config would be greatly appreciated. (and, if that makes the EntLib configuration tool show up, I'll be absolutely delighted) Edit: I've been tricked! The tree in VS 2008 isn't a true superset-subset relationship, which is why I got so frustrated. To wit, the top of the tree: And a 'sub-section' of the tree.

• Play Shoutcast MP3 radio stream with Python?

  I have managed to create an online radio station using Shoutcast and Sam Broadcaster. Now, I am wanting to build my own player for that radio station. I am not sure where to begin, I have googled, but no luck. I am using Python 2.6 on Microsoft Windows. I have managed to capture the stream and save it as an MP# on the hard disk, just not sure what to do with it next. I tried playback of the file, but it always pulls up errors.   We're in the early design/prep phases of transferring/updating a rather large "legacy" 3 tier client-server app to a new version. We’re looking at doing WPF over Winforms as it appears to be the direction Microsoft is pushing development of the future and we’d like the maximize the life cycle/span of the apps. That said during the rewrite we’d like to make as many changes to our data access/presentation model to improve performance as much as possible up front as many. I’ve been doing some research along that vein but the vast majority of the resources I've found that discuss WPF focus only simple data tracking apps or focus on the very basics UI design/controls. The few items that even discuss data presentation are fairly elementary in depth. Are there any books/articles/recommended reading/other resources recommended for development related to large enterprise level business apps? Any “gotchas” that should/could be avoided? • SQL Access INSERT INTO Autonumber Field

  I'm trying to make a visual basic application which is connected to a Microsoft Access Database using OLEDB. Inside my database I have a user table with the following layout ID - Autonumber Username - Text Password - Text Email - Text To insert data into the table I use the following query INSERT INTO Users (Username, Password, Email) VALUES ('004606', 'Password', '[email protected]') However I seem to get an error with this statement and according to VB it's a syntax error. But then I tried to use the following query INSERT INTO Users (Username) Values ('004606') This query seemed to work absolutely fine... So the problem is I can insert into just one field but not all 3 (excluding the ID field because it's an autonumber). Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

In my scenario the all the data would be provided to me, so I'm not supposed to crawl for it. In n nutshell, am looking for a tool which does - Data Analysis, Web based Reporting, provides some kind of a dashboard and mining features. I have worked on the Microsoft Analysis Services and BOXI and off late I have been looking at Pentaho, which seems to be a good option. Please share your experiences on any such tool which you know of. cheers

• What are the reasons to use SQL Server instead of MySQL with a complex .Net project?

  We currently have a 10 year old nasty, spaghetti-code-style SQL Server database that we are soon looking to pretty much re-write from scratch as part of a re-write to a large web application. (The existing application will serve as the functional requirements for the next incarnation of the app) The new version will be developed in .Net, so a large portion of the application stack will be based on Microsoft technologies (Visual Studio will be used IIS will be the application server). One of the developers on the project has raised the possibility of switching to MySQL instead of SQL Server in order to save on cost for both the licence of the DB server, as well as the tools to design and manipulate the DB (such as the wonderfully free MySQL Workbench). What are the various pros and cons of using SQL Server vs. MySQL as the database for a complex .Net project? Price is one factor we have identified, both in terms of the DB server licence as well as tools to manipulate the DB, but what other factors come into play?
