• What is hogging my connection?

  At times it seems like dozens, if not hundreds of root-owned HTTP connections spring up. This is not much of a problem on LAN or WLAN as each of them seems to transfer very little, but if I use GPRS link, my ping times go into minutes (seriously, 80000ms is not infrequent!) and all connections grind to a halt waiting till these end. This usually lasts some 15 minutes and ends about when I start troubleshooting it for real. • Ubuntu Preseed set Norwegian Keyboard?

  It's been a couple of days now that I am trying to make a fully automated unattended installation. I managed to make it work with Ubuntu/Cobbler and a preseed file, but I cannot set the correct keyboard layout which is Norwegian in this case. I am doing the tests on a virtual machine and when I am going with a normal manual installation (no preseed) everything is working fine. When I am using the preseed file, I always end up with an "English (US)" keyboard no matter the many different options I have tried. I can change it manually with the "dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration" command, but that's not the case. It should be handled automatically using the preseed file. I am using DEBCONF_DEBUG=5 when the grub is loading, and as I see in "/var/log/installer/syslog" file after the installation has finished, the preseeding commands are accepted. Can anyone help on this?   It has happened several times now where I end up installing TFS "over the shoulder" of the system admin guy whose job it will be to "own" the server when I am gone. TFS is challenging enough to stand up when doing it myself on a completely open platform, but at these locations, networks are locked down, machines are locked down, and the unexpected always seems to pop up. I personally have the tolerance for these things as a software developer, but as we are installing I have to listen to all of 'colorful' remarks being made about: "why is it like this" or "this is a piece of crap". Generally the issues center around SharePoint integration. TFS on it's own is straightforward, but the last flavor in everyone's mouth is the SharePoint piece. As a product I like SharePoint, but installation is a nightmare. In this particular case, we are going to use WSS since the customer would like this separate from their corp SharePoint 2010 installations since there dev team is really small (1 developer) and it is being used as a VSS replacement, more than a full blown ALM tool. The server where it is being installed as a Cisco Security Agent on it that seems to block 'suspicious' activity, and as far as I can tell is preventing WSS from installing properly. The most confounding thing we can find no meaningful log entries to help diagnose the issue. it didn't help matters that when we tried to contact Microsoft for support, because we mentioned TFS in the list of things that we were trying to install, that after waiting 2 hours that we got a TFS support person NOT the SharePoint person that we really needed, so after another 2 hours the SharePoint support that we did get managed to corrupt the registry sufficiently with his 'tools' that we ended up starting over from scratch the next day anyway after going home at midnight. My point to this is: The System Administrator who is going to own this, now thinks it is a piece of crap because SharePoint wouldn't install properly. Perception is everything.  Everyone today is conditioned that software installs and works in a very simple matter. When looking at the different options to install TFS with the different "modes" there is inconsistency in the information being presented which leads to choices that causes headaches and this bad perception before the product is even installed. I am highlighting this because I love TFS as a product, but I HATE installing it, and would like it to install as simply and elegantly as the product operates once it is installed.

• How to set up secure cookie on weblogic server

  WebLogic Server allows a user to securely access HTTPS resources in a session that was initiated using HTTP, without loss of session data. To enable this feature, add AuthCookieEnabled="true" to the WebServer element in config.xml: <WebServer Name="myserver" AuthCookieEnabled="true"/>Setting AuthCookieEnabled to true, which is the default setting, causes the WebLogic Server instance to send a new secure cookie, _WL_AUTHCOOKIE_JSESSIONID, to the browser when authenticating via an HTTPS connection. Once the secure cookie is set, the session is allowed to access other security-constrained HTTPS resources only if the cookie is sent from the browser.Thus, WebLogic Server uses two cookies: the JSESSIONID cookie and the _WL_AUTHCOOKIE_JSESSIONID cookie. By default, the JSESSIONID cookie is never secure, but the _WL_AUTHCOOKIE_JSESSIONID cookie is always secure. A secure cookie is only sent when an encrypted communication channel is in use. Assuming a standard HTTPS login (HTTPS is an encrypted HTTP connection), your browser gets both cookies.For subsequent HTTP access, you are considered authenticated if you have a valid JSESSIONID cookie, but for HTTPS access, you must have both cookies to be considered authenticated. Until today I had a manually installed Eclipse (one of the official bundles available on their site), I've tried to replace it by the repository version and I get the same errors. What should I do to make Eclipse work again? Another person reports: Same happened to me after updating last night. Already tried reinstalling Eclipse and Java, starting Eclipse with -clean and starting new workspace and new .eclipse dir, but nothing helps.

• Why Does Ejabberd Start Fail?

  I am trying to install ejabberd 2.1.10-2 on my Ubuntu 12.04.1 server. This is a fresh install, and ejabberd is never successfully installed. The Install Every time, apt-get hangs on this: Setting up ejabberd (2.1.10-2ubuntu1) ... Generating SSL certificate /etc/ejabberd/ejabberd.pem... Creating config file /etc/ejabberd/ejabberd.cfg with new version Starting jabber server: ejabberd............................................................ failed. The dots just go forever until it times out or I 'killall' beam, beam.smp, epmd, and ejabberd processes. I've turned off all firewall restrictions. Here's the output of epmd -names while the install is hung: epmd: up and running on port 4369 with data: name ejabberdctl at port 42108 name ejabberd at port 39621 And after it fails: epmd: up and running on port 4369 with data: name ejabberd at port 39621 At the same time (during and after), the output of both netstat -atnp | grep 5222 and netstat -atnp | grep 5280 is empty. The Crash File A crash dump file is create at /var/log/ejabber/erl_crash.dump. The slogan (i.e. reason for the crash) is: Slogan: Kernel pid terminated (application_controller) ({application_start_failure,kernel,{shutdown,{kernel,start,[normal,[]]}}}) It's alive? Whenever I try to relaunch ejabberd with service ejabberd start, the same thing happens - even if I've killed all processes before doing so. For example: trying to register a user: root@ns1:~# ejabberdctl register myusername mydomain.com mypassword Failed RPC connection to the node ejabberd@ns1: nodedown I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. • Configuring Multi-Tap on Synaptics Touchpad

  I am having a hard time configuring my notebook's touchpad. The touchpad already works. It successfully responds to one-finger tap, two-finger tap and two-finger vertical scrolling. What I want to accomplish: change two-finger tap action from right-mouse click to middle-mouse click add three-finger tap functionality to yield right-mouse click action (i have checked that the three-finger tap is supported by my laptop's touchpad since it works on Windows) I read on a forum to use this as a guide. I have successfully accomplished point 1 with synclient TapButton2=2. However, I have to do it everytime I log in. I have tried to put that command on /etc/rc.local but the computer always boots and logins with the default configuration. Regarding point 2, I have tried synclient TapButton3=3 but it doesn't do anything when I three-finger tap the touchpad. • debootstrap or virt-install Ubuntu Server Maverick fails

  Oki so running any kind of variation of debootsrap i get the following error I: Extracting zlib1g... W: Failure trying to run: chroot /lxc/iso/dodo mount -t proc proc /proc debootstrap.log : mount: permission denied if i manualy chroot into the directory then i get promted with: id: cannot find name for group ID 0 I have no name!@...# i tryed addgroup but it's not installed , apt-get/aptitude : command not found , so i can't do anything with it . I've tryed ubuntu-vm-builder but since it's calling debootstrap i get the same error . Played with it for a few days and then i stoped and gaved virt-install a try , everithing works till i get to the console to finish the install witch shows only : Escape character is ^] and nothing more , no matter what i type . So basicly what i'm trying to do is build a usable chroot system so i can use it with lxc or libvirt . What are my options to get containers/virtualisation up and running ? I've read somewhere that i can use openvz templates with lxc or libvirt ? but how ? Let me know if you need aditional info ( p.s. doing all this on a dedicated server so i can't access it by hand , only ssh , plus on my local pc running ubuntu desktop maverick everithing works ) . EDIT , looks like the base install was using an custom kernel ( bzImage-2.6.34.6-xxxx-grs-ipv6-65 ) for witch you i didn't found the headers , i did a update-grub after i installed a new kernel , edited menu.lst and no it's using 2.6.35-23-server and now debootstrap is working just fine same as ubuntu-vm-builder .

• Configuring Multi-Tap on Synpaptics Touchpad

  I am having a hard time configuring my notebook's touchpad. The touchpad already works. It succesfully responds to one-finger tap, two-finger tap and two-finger vertical scrolling. What I want to accomplish: change two-finger tap action from right-mouse click to middle-mouse click add three-finger tap functionality to yield right-mouse click action I read on a forum to use this as a guide. I have succesfully accomplished point 1 with synclient TapButton2=2. However, I have to do it everytime I log in. I have tried to put that command on /etc/rc.local but the computer always boots and logins with the default configuration. Regarding point 2, I have tried synclient TapButton3=3 but it doesn't do anything when I three-finger tap the touchpad.   Network is not working anymore - Ubuntu 12.04 Hello, I have a problem with my network connection. I have been using the same laptop with Ubuntu and the same connection for more than a year, and suddenly yesterday the connection stopped working (both wireless and wired). I've tested with another computer and the connection is fine (both wireless and wired). I've been reading similar posts but I haven't found a solution yet.   I have got two ubuntu 12.04 servers(xeon e3). Sometimes(several days) each server spontaneously reboots. HDDs and other hardware are ok. Which logfile can help find a reason of the problem? UPDATED. hardware: xeon e3 processor, intel server motherboard, 32gb ddr3 ecc, mdadm mirror hdd raid for system, mdadm ssd raid for database(postgres). Both servers have similar (not identical) components. Smart is OK. It seems that the problem is in the software. Python process and database are running on this servers.   Are you a Boxee user who thinks the default background is little boring? Today we’ll take a look at how to freshen up the look of Boxee by changing the background. Boxee Background When you log into Boxee, select the Settings button at the upper left corner of the Home page.   Select General on the Settings screen. When you select or hover your mouse over the Background Image button, you’ll see options to set a background image or set a background image folder. You’ll have the option of settings a single static image as your background, or choosing an images folder.   If you choose a folder, Boxee will rotate through the images in the folder. To set Background images folder, select that option. Browse for your image folder.. And then select OK.   Boxee will rotate through the images in the folder.   Images will change every ten seconds.   If you prefer a single static image, select Set background image   Choose a image and select OK. Now just enjoy you nice new backgrounds.   If you ever wish to revert back to the default Boxee background, simply select Reset Images on the Settings \ General screen. Adding your own backgrounds is a nice way to customize your Boxee experience. Ideally, you’ll want to choose high resolution images and images oriented as landscape rather than portrait. • MySQL and Hadoop Integration - Unlocking New Insight

  “Big Data” offers the potential for organizations to revolutionize their operations. With the volume of business data doubling every 1.2 years, analysts and business users are discovering very real benefits when integrating and analyzing data from multiple sources, enabling deeper insight into their customers, partners, and business processes. As the world’s most popular open source database, and the most deployed database in the web and cloud, MySQL is a key component of many big data platforms, with Hadoop vendors estimating 80% of deployments are integrated with MySQL. The new Guide to MySQL and Hadoop presents the tools enabling integration between the two data platforms, supporting the data lifecycle from acquisition and organisation to analysis and visualisation / decision, as shown in the figure below The Guide details each of these stages and the technologies supporting them: Acquire: Through new NoSQL APIs, MySQL is able to ingest high volume, high velocity data, without sacrificing ACID guarantees, thereby ensuring data quality. Real-time analytics can also be run against newly acquired data, enabling immediate business insight, before data is loaded into Hadoop. In addition, sensitive data can be pre-processed, for example healthcare or financial services records can be anonymized, before transfer to Hadoop. Organize: Data is transferred from MySQL tables to Hadoop using Apache Sqoop. With the MySQL Binlog (Binary Log) API, users can also invoke real-time change data capture processes to stream updates to HDFS. Analyze: Multi-structured data ingested from multiple sources is consolidated and processed within the Hadoop platform. Decide: The results of the analysis are loaded back to MySQL via Apache Sqoop where they inform real-time operational processes or provide source data for BI analytics tools. So how are companies taking advantage of this today? As an example, on-line retailers can use big data from their web properties to better understand site visitors’ activities, such as paths through the site, pages viewed, and comments posted. This knowledge can be combined with user profiles and purchasing history to gain a better understanding of customers, and the delivery of highly targeted offers. • What is a resonable workflow for designing webapps?

  It has been a while since I have done any substantial web development and I'd like to take advantage of the latest practices but I'm struggling to visualize the workflow to incorporate everything. Here's what I'm looking to use: CakePHP framework jsmin (JavaScript Minify) SASS (Synctactically Awesome StyleSheets) Git CakePHP: Pretty self explanatory, make modifications and update the source. jsmin: When you modify a script, do you manually run jsmin to output the new minified code, or would it be better to run a pre-commit hook that automatically generates jsmin outputs of javascript files that have changed. Assume that I have no knowledge of implementing commit hooks. SASS: I really like what SASS has to offer but I'm also aware that SASS code isn't supported by browsers by default so, at some point, the SASS code needs to be transformed to normal CSS. At what point in the workflow is this done. Git I'm terrified to admit it but, the last time I did any substantial web development, I didn't use SCM source control (IE, I did use source control but it consisted of a very detailed change log with backups). I have since had plenty of experience using Git (as well as mercurial and SVN) for desktop development but I'm wondering how to best implement it for web development). Is it common practice to implement a remote repository on the web host so I can push the changes directly to the production server, or is there some cross platform (windows/linux) tool that makes it easy to upload only changed files to the production server. Are there web hosting companies that make it eas to implement a remote repository, do I need SSH access, etc... I know how to accomplish this on my own testing server with a remote repository with a separate remote tracking branch already but I've never done it on a remote production web hosting server before so I'm not aware of the options yet. Extra: I was considering implementing a javascript framework where separate javascript files used on a page are compiled into a single file for each page on the production server to limit the number of file downloads needed per page. Does something like this already exist? Is there already an open source project out in the wild that implements something similar that I could use and contribute to? Considering how paranoid web devs are about performance (and the fact that the number of file requests on a website is a big hit to performance) I'm guessing that there is some wizard hacker on the net who has already addressed this issue.
