• Postfix on Snow Leopard unable to send MIME emails, including header contents in message body

  I configured postfix on snow leopard by adding the following line to /etc/hostconfig: MAILSERVER=-YES- I then configured postfix to relay through my ISP's SMTP server. I added the following two lines in their respective places within /etc/postfix/main.cf: myhostname = 1and1.com relayhost = shawmail.vc.shawcable.net I then have a simple PHP mail function wrapper as follows: send_email("[email protected]", "[email protected]", "Test Email", "<p>This is a simple HTML email</p>"); echo "Done"; function send_email($from,$to,$subject,$message){ $header="From: <".$from."> "; $header.= 'MIME-Version: 1.0' . • Taking the fear out of a Cloud initiative through the use of security tools

  Typical employees, constituents, and business owners  interact with online services at a level where their knowledge of back-end systems is low, and most of the times, there is no interest in knowing the systems' architecture.  Most application administrators, while partially responsible for these systems' upkeep, have very low interactions with them, at least at an operational, platform level.  Of greatest interest to these groups is the consistent, reliable, and manageable operation of the interfaces with which they communicate.  Introducing the "Cloud" topic in any evolving architecture automatically raises the concerns for data and identity security simply because of the perception that when owning the silicon, enterprises are not able to manage its content.  But is this really true?   In the majority of traditional architectures, data and applications that access it are physically distant from the organization that owns it.  It may reside in a shared data center, or a geographically convenient location that spans large organizations' connectivity capabilities.  In the end, very often, the model of a "traditional" architecture is fairly close to the "new" Cloud architecture.  Most notable difference is that by nature, a Cloud setup uses security as a core function, and not as a necessary add-on. Therefore, following best practices, one can say that data can be safer in the Cloud than in traditional, stove-piped environments where data access is segmented and difficult to audit. The caveat is, of course, what "best practices" consist of, and here is where Oracle's security tools are perfectly suited for the task.  Since Oracle's model is to support very large organizations, it is fundamentally concerned about distributed applications, databases etc and their security, and the related Identity Management Products, or DB Security options reflect that concept.  In the end, consumers of applications and their data are to be served more safely in a controlled Cloud environment, while realizing the many cost savings associated with it. Having very fast resources to serve them (such as the Exa* platform) makes the concept even more attractive.  Finally, if a Cloud strategy does not seem feasible, consider the pros and cons of a traditional vs. a Cloud architecture.  Using the exact same criteria and business goals/traditions, and with Oracle's technology, you might be hard pressed to justify maintaining the technical status quo on security alone. • SQLAuthority News – Resolution for New Year 2011

  Today is the first day of the year so I want to write something very light. Last Year: 2010 Last Year was a blast; really traveled a lot. My family and I went on vacation. There I enjoyed being father, rolling on the floor and playing with my daughter. Here is the list of the countries I visited throughout 2010: Singapore (twice) Malaysia (twice) Sri Lanka (thrice) Nepal (once) United States of America (twice) United Arab Emirates (UAE) (once) My daughter who just completed 1 year on September 1, 2010 has so far visited three countries: Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, where I have done lots of community activities. The list containing all my activities can be found at Pinal Dave’s Community Events. I have written nearly 380 blog posts last year. It would be difficult for me to pick a few. However, I keep a running list of all of my articles over here: All Articles on SQLAuthority.com. I have so far received more than 10,000 email questions during the year and consequently I have done my best to answer most of them. I strongly believe if one would Search SQLAuthority.com blog, they would have found the answer quickly. The best part of 2010 for me was working on SQL Server Health Check and SQL Server Performance Tuning. This Year: 2011 This year, I came up with two simple goals: 1. Personal Goal: Reduce Weight 2. • My first Windows Phone 7 App: Getting SharePoint Content

  Earlier this week at the Mix10 conference, Microsoft announced the developer story of the Windows Phone 7 Series. As expected, it’s all about Silverlight! For all the details I highly recommend to watch the recorded keynotes (day 1, day 2). Tonight I could resist trying to build my very first Windows Phone 7 application; the traditional Hello World thingy. Because the developer tools (Visual Studio 2010 and the free Visual Studio 2010 Express) have pretty nice templates, that wasn’t much of a challenge. So I tried to build something real: an application that can display SharePoint 2010 content, for example items from an announcements list. I head to work my way around some limitations because both SharePoint 2010 and the developer tools are still in beta and CTP, but finally I got it working! Because of the many workarounds, the code is not yet ready for publication, but I’ve created a small screencast so you can see the result.   I suppose this could be asked on Server Fault as well, but it is specific to the client so I thought I'd start here. I have keys for a OpenVPN server already in place. I have used these keys to connect already, but using a Windows XP machine. Well, obviously I cannot use UserAgent because I minimized the server signature, but I could use IP address. We want to highlight the "Installation Information" section which includes the following late-breaking information: Business Rules Migration to Calculation Manager Oracle Hyperion Calculation Manager has replaced Oracle Hyperion Business Rules as the mechanism for designing and managing business rules, therefore, Business Rules is no longer released with EPM System Release 11.1.2.2. If you are applying 11.1.2.2 as a maintenance release, or upgrading to Release 11.1.2.2, and have been using Business Rules in an earlier release, you must migrate to Calculation Manager rules in Release 11.1.2.2. • Apache server completely freezes until it gets restarted

  My server does this every few days. What sucks is that it always seems to do this right after I go to bed, so when I wake up, I'm greeted with the fact that my server has been down for the past 6 or 7 hours. When I first noticed this, I added a cronjob that tries to restart the server every 15 minutes, but I guess that didn't fix it. Once I noticed the server was down, I can this command: /etc/init.d/apache2 restart * Restarting web server apache2 apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName ... waiting ...........................................................apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName httpd (pid 17597) already running ...which is odd, because a restart should restart the server, even if it's already running, correct? I eventually had to "stop" then "start" to get it working again. I then looked through the logs, and found something very weird. It seems that around the time the server crashed, the logs have entries that are wildly out of order. It looks a little like this: xx.xxx.xxx.x - - [21/Apr/2010:06:32:05 -0400] "GET / blah" xx.xxx.xxx.x - - [21/Apr/2010:06:51:25 -0400] "GET / blah" x.xx.xxx.xxx - - [21/Apr/2010:06:38:23 -0400] "GET / blah" xxx.xx.xx.xx - - [21/Apr/2010:06:31:56 -0400] "GET / blah" xxx.xx.xx.xx - - [21/Apr/2010:06:51:49 -0400] "GET / blah" xx.xx.xxx.xx - - [21/Apr/2010:06:33:20 -0400] "GET / blah" I don't think the problem is memory, because this: tells me that right before the crash, memory usage is fine. I'm running apache with the worker mpm, here are the settings for that: <IfModule mpm_worker_module> StartServers 1 MaxClients 100 MinSpareThreads 5 MaxSpareThreads 10 ThreadsPerChild 10 MaxRequestsPerChild 3000 </IfModule> This apache server is running a bunch of stuff, but most of the traffic comes from a django project I'm hosting, that uses mod_wsgi. There also is a simple machines forum that is running off of mod_fcgid. Those setting are below: <IfModule mod_fcgid.c> MaxRequestsPerProcess 500 MaxProcessCount 3 AddHandler fcgid-script .php .fcgi AddHandler cgi-script .cgi .pl FCGIWrapper "/usr/bin/php-cgi" .php </IfModule> Anyone know of anything else I can check? I've just about tweaked every single setting I can think of, yet these freezes still happen.

This blogpost contains detailed instructions on installing the demo site. The demo site is based on the site http://opensourcefood.com. The demo site requires internet access because it still links to pages and resources of the real site. Execute the following steps to install the demo site: Copy the OpenSourceFoodDemo.zip file to your SharePoint Server 2010 Make sure that the zip file in “unblocked”, otherwise files are assumed from other computer (right-click on zip file, press “Unblock” button if available) Unzip the OpenSourceFoodDemo.zip to a folder of your choice (c:\OpenSourceFoodDemo) Open the SharePoint  Start->Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products->SharePoint 2010 Management Shell Change directory to the unzip folder (cd c:\OpenSourceFoodDemo) Start install script: .\InstallDemoSite.ps1 Answer the questions, default values in most cases ok. • Need advice for approach for a web-based app that loads excel worksheet but exposes only the charts

  I'm looking for suggestions on the Visual Studio approach to take for a web application that is in the conceptual stage. My environment has a lot of tools: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64bit Visual Studio 2010 Professional Edition Sharepoint 2010 Server Enterprise Edition SQL Server 2008 R2 Office 2010 Professional I know I will need this app to retrieve data from a database (or a web service - not sure exactly at this point). The data needs to be placed in an Excel workbook dynamically. The app will need to have a nice user interface (standard web controls - perhaps with some Javascript effects). The Excel ribbon and worksheet grid will need to be hidden. Some web control(s) will cause the Excel chart(s) to be rendered. I am thinking this sounds like Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) so as to leverage .Net and hide Excel. Can you offer suggestions regarding: One ASP.Net Web App Project One Class Library Project for Excel or perhaps which one of the several different Excel 2010 project types (addin, template, document) Would Excel Services for Sharepoint be useful (or required) ? I am feeling a little overwhelmed with so many choices at this early stage of conceptualizing the app. Can you suggest some ideas for this sort of thing? Also, I am a bit more experienced with C# but I've read VB.Net is better for work with the Excel object model. What are general advises with regard to tool choice and overall approach tradeoffs?

I noted that domain accounts did NOT include a domain and they are in german (as on the SBS 2003 that is the domain server). So I get a "Domänenbenutzer" in wbinfo -u's output not a "CUSTOMER+Domain User" or something similar. (Who may access it). As mentioned, accessing the share from smbclient results in this NT_STATUS_MEDIA_WRITE_PROTECTED . Accessing it from windows shows ACLs that look correct (The user may write) - but it does not work, I can only read files not write. • What would happen if I did a "Boot to VHD" to a VHD that was configured to run under Hyper-V?

  Microsoft has a Hyper-V based VM I'm interested in running, however, I don't have access to a Windows Server 2008 machine to try it on, only a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine (Windows 7 does not support Hyper-V). This is the VM in question: This download contains three Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V Virtual Machine set for evaluating and demonstrating Office 2010, SharePoint 2010 and Project Server 2010. 2010 Information Worker Demonstration and Evaluation Virtual Machine (SP1) http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=27417 I came across a somewhat relevant article from Scott Hanselman: Less Virtual, More Machine - Windows 7 and the magic of Boot to VHD: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/LessVirtualMoreMachineWindows7AndTheMagicOfBootToVHD.aspx I realize other options are to convert this VM to a VMWare compatible VM or some of the options to run it under VirtualBox. But instead of those routes, I'm wondering: What would happen if I tried to go the "Boot to VHD" route using this Hyper-V VHD? Is it possible that during the boot process, Windows would simply notice that hardware had changed and adjust accordingly, installing the appropriate drivers and continuing on without a hitch?

• Move Data into the Grid for Scalable, Predictable Response Times

  CloudTran is pleased to introduce the availability of the CloudTran Transaction and Persistence Manager for creating scalable, reliable data services on the Oracle Coherence In-Memory Data Grid (IMDG). Use of IMDG architectures has been key to handling today’s web-scale loads because it eliminates database latency by storing important and frequently access data in memory instead of on disk. The CloudTran product lets developers easily use an IMDG for full ACID-compliant transactions without having to be concerned about the location or spread of data. The system has its own implementation of fast, scalable distributed transactions that does NOT depend on XA protocols but still guarantees all ACID properties. Plus, CloudTran asynchronously replicates data going into the IMDG to back-end datastores and back-up data centers, again ensuring ACID properties. CloudTran can be accessed through Java Persistence API (JPA via TopLink Grid) and now, through a new Low-Level API, or LLAPI. This is ideal for use in SOA applications that need data reliability, high availability, performance, and scalability. Still in limited beta release, the LLAPI gives developers the ability to use standard put/remove logic available in Coherence and then wrap logic with simple Spring annotations or XML+AspectJ to start transactions. An important feature of LLAPI is the ability to join transactions. This is a common outcome for SOA applications that need to reduce network traffic by aggregating data into single cache entries and then doing SOA service processing in the node holding the data. This results in the need to orchestrate transaction processing across multiple service calls. CloudTran has the capability to handle these “multi-client” transactions at speed with no loss in ACID properties. Developing software around an IMDG like Oracle Coherence is an important choice for today’s web-scale applications and services. But this introduces new architectural considerations to maintain scalability in light of increased network loads and data movement. Without using CloudTran, developers are faced with an incredibly difficult task to ensure data reliability, availability, performance, and scalability when working with an IMDG. Working with highly distributed data that is entirely volatile while stored in memory presents numerous edge cases where failures can result in data loss. The CloudTran product takes care of all of this, leaving developers with the confidence and peace of mind that all data is processed correctly.   I've set a samba server that seems to work, all shares are seemingly exported as readonly, however. The machine is called "lx". I noted that domain accounts did NOT include a domain and they are in german (as on the SBS 2003 that is the domain server). So I get a "Domänenbenutzer" in wbinfo -u's output not a "CUSTOMER+Domain User" or something similar.   I have a 500GB external drive. It had two partitions, each around 250GB. I removed the first partition. I'd like to move the 2nd to the left, so it consumes 100% of the drive.
