  • Compiz with Intel video card not working after upgrade to 11.04

    After upgrade to ubuntu 11.04 from 10.10 My compiz stop working I have no cube effects and preview files and other compiz stuff. I have intel x4500 (00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) ) glxinfo name of display: :0 display: :0 screen: 0 direct rendering: Yes server glx vendor string: Brian Paul server glx version string: 1.4 Mesa 7.11-devel I have removed compiz, gnome (witch --purge) and install again, nothing works :( Im using default ubuntu desktop (no unity) any idea how can I fix this?:

    How can I auto-unlock the Keyring Manager in 12.10? This answer for 11.10 doesn't seem to apply because the Keyring Manager looks different in 12.10 so I can't follow the instructions. I have set up my machine to automatically log in to my account. I don't mind the lesser security of having the keyring automatically unlocked. (This is still a home desktop computer of a simple user, not a missile launch system.)

    I want to know if it is possible to use DesktopCouch without UbuntuOne, but with a local CouchDB Server. I found a pairing Tool, but this crashes, when I try to pair two computer. I can find the local Desktop Couches with the Avahi Zeroconf Browser and it should be possible to find them with Python and start a replication To make a long story short: I want to sync DesktopCouch Databases in my local network without Ubuntu One. Is that possible?

Such as LinkedIn, ceevee.com, github resume generator, etc. I use some of the things I've mentioned but I don't really like the out-dated style of resume created by ceevee.com, but I'm also not much of a designer. Anyone have any "nice" (as in design, ease of use) templates/apps/services you use?

    Here's an interesting tidbit: I have noticed an even more pronounced trend toward centralized or virtual workstations lately. Both my wife and I can sit at home, as we are now, at the dining room table and work on our laptops (exciting life, I know!) but both of us are not actually working locally on these machines. We are both remoting into machines at our respective workplaces. And we all go rhapsodic!  It boils down to the age old dilemma, "if the cops are so busy protecting us then who will protect them" (even the folks back at Hollywood keep us reminded)! Who is going to ensure that these internet based services do not go down(either intentionally or by some malicious third party) leading to a multinational colossal disaster .At the risk of sounding pessimistic,  IT IS NOT AN ISSUE OF TRUST, this is but a mere case of Murphy's Law!  What then? Should the "cloud" be trusted to this extent at this time?  This is an era where challenges are rapidly solved with lightning promptness to "beat the competition", my hope is that our solutions are not just creating problems that we may not be able to solve!  Keeping my ear on the Ground.

  • At $20/month Windows Azure host my website with 99.97% uptime

    Couple of years ago a reliable and decent performing Windows hosting was not affordable to many enthusiastic developers who want to try a startup idea or build a hobby site. I tried to start an ASP.NET website few years ago to provide services like – Mobile Tracing, Vehicle Tracing. But due to high cost of Windows hosting I developed those services using PHP (not an easy task for .NET developer) and hosted on them Linux servers.  But with recent evolution of Windows Azure, hosting ASP.NET websites on highly reliable servers is affordable. Response times during peak are around 3 seconds and on nomarl loads it is around 1.5 seconds. They are taken up by Microsoft team and I just focus on building my website. Wish there is a low cost Linux version of Windows Azure so that I can stop worrying about server maintenance of this blog!! If you are looking for a Windows hosting, look no further than Windows Azure. If you find $20/month is a bit expensive to start with you may explore Azure Website (sort of shared hosted environment) which is free to start with and as your traffic grows you can move to paid hosting.

    does anyone have experience with both dot42 and Xamarin to develop C# apps for Android? Could you please say why one should prefer one over the other? I like the free Visual Studio integration that is offered by dot42 (while Xamarin requires a subscription for this, and the business one which is quite expensive). I would also like to know if Visual Studio integration actually means that one could use all libraries available for desktop apps. Thank you.

  • Set Ctrl+Alt+T to open a maximized terminal

    I use the Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut to open a terminal, but I cannot see how I can get it maximized. When I start it manually, I can simply do a gnome-terminal --maximize, but that does not apply for the shortcut. Even a changing of the .desktop files did not change anything. Any way to let the shortcut open a maximized terminal window? I use regular Gnome 2 on Ubuntu 11.04 with no compositing effects.

    On my desktop Ubuntu 10.4 I use ffmpeg to convert videos to a format my dvd-player understands. On my laptop running 10.10 I can't get the same command to work, what package(s) are missing? ffmpeg -i infile.flv \ -threads 2 -vcodec mpeg4 -vtag divx -acodec libmp3lame -sameq \ outfile.avi #...snip Unknown encoder 'libmp3lame' Using apt-cache search libmp3lame I'm told there exist libmp3lame0 and libmp3lame-dev, both of which I've installed. Using acodec libmp3lame0 doesn't work either.
