• Installer hangs on "waiting for other installations to finish" despite no other installations in progress

  I started an installation of the Xcode 4 developer's preview last night before going to bed. When I woke up, the installation had popped up a message saying to close Xcode first (doh!). I did so, but whatever script had displayed the message seemed to have hung because the (uncancellable) message wouldn't disappear, and the installer wouldn't progress. After force quitting the Installer app, the message above was still showing, so I restarted my MacBook Pro and then tried the installation again. This time it wouldn't even start, instead showing one of those candy-stripe activity bars and the message: Waiting for other installations to finish At this point, I'm stumped. There are no other installations in progress, so there must be some artifact left over from the interrupted install that's gumming up the works. But what?

• How to protect Ruby on Rails code on external server?

  I have to deploy a Ruby on Rails Applications on a client's server and I do not want them to be able to view or modify the source code. How would you protect the code technically? I thought about building a linux-based virtual machine with an encrypted filesystem where the application code resides. The client has no root access, or direct access to the system at all. All services start automatically and the application is ready to use. What would you suggest?

• How to version large binary files?

  I run Windows XP inside a virtual machine for some tasks. I attempted to use git to version the image for virtual box; however, it is about 6GB after all the service packs. I only have 6GB of ram and git bombs out saying it is out of memory. I would basically like to have snapshots of Windows so that I can simply blow away an image and start anew when I want to. I like to have something I can rollback to in the event that an upgrade doesn't work so I would prefer to use version control or snapshots if the filesystem supports it. Any ideas on what tools I can use to do that?

• How to reliably run a batch job every 5 seconds?

  I'm building an application where the sending of all notifications (email, SMS, fax) will be asynchronous. The application will write the notifications to the database, and a batch job will read these notifications and send them with the appropriate transport. I was first reading at ways to run cron faster than the minute, and realized this was a bad idea. The batch scripts are written in PHP, and I guess that writing a proper daemon would be quite an overhead (though I'm open to any suggestion, as PHP car run indefinitely as well). What I have in mind is a solution that would: Run the PHP script every 5 seconds Check that the previous run has finished, or abort (never 2 concurrent batches running) Kill the script if live for more than x minutes (a security in case it hangs) Start with the system (if a reboot occurs) Any idea how to do this?

• Upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 from 10.04 and have to transfer database from Postgresql 8.4 to 9.1

  I upgraded server with a Rails application to Ubuntu 12.04 from 10.04 and cannot connect to Postgresql database now... Here is the error message from Rails app: could not connect to server: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432" Also the pg_ctl start is not recognized as a command.. EDIT: Turns out my database in on Postgresl 8.4 and my sever is now running on 9.1. So all the database files / configs are on 8.4.. How can I transfer them? Just straight copy from old pg_hba.conf?

• Webpage / Other application does not fit fully on screen

  I have an ASUS Eee PC 1008 HA The problem is that I have to move the cursor up/down in order to see the start control / icons at the bottom of the screen and the cursor up in order to see the menu bar / etc at the top of the screen, ie the whole page does not fit on the screen anymore. It has nothing to do with the zoom % in the bottom right hand corner. This also is the case whatever application I am running, ie Internet explorer , word, excel or whatever. Does anybody have an idea what is the problem and how I can resolve this?

• AuthInfoRequired cups overwrites

  My problem is basically identical to the following: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=61826 Put simply, I have a machine in ubuntu trying to connect to another ubuntu machine via a network in order to use the printer attached. There is no problem printing until I restart the guest machine. Immediately it overwrites the printers.conf file (under /etc/cups/printers.conf). It always adds the same line: AuthInfoRequired username,password I stop cups and change it to *#*AuthInfoRequired username,password to comment out the command. Start cups. Works great 'til the next shutdown. Then it gets overwritten again. Googling indicates it may be GTK problem and not CUPS, but I have found no permanent solution to date. Any suggestions appreciated ....

• Program to dump ID3 tag structure

  Is there a program that would dump the complete structure of ID3v2 tags? Not just the frame names and values, but full information such as frame order, text encoding, description encoding (for TXXX frames), presence of unsynchronization, presence of multiple tags... Background: I'm rather curious why some files are incompatible with some programs. For example, some ID3v2.4 tags written by foobar2000 are not read by Winamp; editing with Mutagen fixes them but editing with foobar2000 breaks again. It's not the version or data encoding – most other v2.4 UTF-16 tags work fine... However, if I use foobar2000 to convert the tags to v2.3, then back to v2.4, they start working fine in Winamp – this last bit just does not make any sense. Edit: Linux or/and Windows.

• ESXi standalone host cannot power on any virtual machines

  I have a standalone VMWare ESXi host on ESXi 5.1. It currently has a handful of VMs powered on, and they are running fine. If I try to power on any other VM - any VM at all - I am receiving the following message: Power On virtual machine:A general system error occurred: The virtual machine could not start I have been through everything on KB2001005 and KB1006232 and their steps are either not applicable, or don't change anything. Nothing is generated in the virtual machine's log file. Where can I troubleshoot from here?

• How can I switch Linux running OS from disk to running from RAM without restarting?

  Is it possible to switch to running Linux from RAM or RAM disk after starting starting initially from disk? eg. You need to make an image of your hard disk, FTP it to a remote location, some time later you want the image back, so you start the system from disk as usual, restore the image you FTP'd from the remote location back into place. More like a CloneZilla backup and restore, without booting the server from CD or USB disk, but starting from the normal hard disk? Notes on environment I should have mentioned it earlier. It is a remotely hosted VM where I cannot boot into a recovery console mode or do a netinstall. It will always boot onto the same disk. Which means that if there is some serious corruption I can't repair it offline, which is why being able to ftp a previously saved backup into place is so important

• Force Windows 8 to search indexed files

  When using search files in Windows 8 (win+f) I don't get expected results. For example, I installed VLC, it's in Program Files (86) folder, and that folder is selected for indexing. Search for files (win+f) gives 0 results. If I pin to start that exe, then it's found - but I don't want to do this, that's not the point. Where does it search for files? Is there any way to specify search locations? It doesn't use Indexing Options settings, at least it seams so. Also, searching from explorer window is kinda slow - I tried entering VLC.EXE in search box (when in c:\ root), and it takes some time to give correct results. It works, but it looks like it doesn't use indexing, rather scan all files/folders, which is slow.

  How do I disable the Windows Key+U hotkey in Windows XP? Alternatively, how do I stop the utility manager from being active? The two are related. The utilty manager is currently providing a potential security hole and I need to remove it*. The system I'm developing uses a custom Gina to log in and start a custom shell. This removes most Windows Key hotkeys but the Win+U still pops up the manager app. Update: Things I've tried and don't work: NoWinKeys registry setting - this only affects explorer hotkeys; Renaming utilman.exe - program reappears next login; Third party software - not really an option, these machines are audited by the clients and additional, third party software would be unlikely to be accepted. Also, the proedure needs to be reasonably straightforward - this has to be done by field service engineers to existing machines (machines currently in Russia, Holland, France, Spain, Ireland and USA). * The hole is via the internet options in the help viewer the utility app links to.

• ShoreTel 230 phone calls from website

  Our company uses these fancy ShoreTel 230 phones. We make many phone calls from our custom built web based contact management system. It would be nice if our employees could click on a phone number from a webpage and have it automatically start dialing the number. (Similar to how iPhone handles this) Anyone every deploy something like this? I would imagine it would require some kind of background running ShoreTel process to accommodate this. 90% of our employees use PC (Windows 7) 10% use OS X Even a PC only solution would be great. Is this even possible and if so, where should one begin? Thanks!

• Job queueing in Toast Titanium 10?

  I have a bunch of .MP4 video files I'm burning to DVD-Video using Toast Titanium 10 on my MacBook Pro. Right now, I'm doing them one at a time. Because my computer is several years old, encoding video for a single DVD takes approximately six hours. I've discovered that it appears I can encode the video directly to a .toast format — however, I have yet to figure out if I can burn these directly to DVD. Also, I have quite a bit of video left to burn, and even that method would require me intervening manually to start a new encoding or burn job every six hours. Would it be possible to somehow queue up multiple DVD-Video encoding jobs at once, and have the computer work through them automatically? The actual writing to DVD disc doesn't take nearly as long, and if I had all my video encoded for me to begin with my job would be a lot quicker. Maybe this can be accomplished with a different piece of software?

• Google Chrome and kerberos authentication against Apache

  I've managed to get kerberos authentication to work now with Apache and Likewise Open but so far, Google Chrome doesn't seem to play fair. Unless I start it with chrome.exe --auth-server-whitelist="*company.com" it does only pop-up a login window but will not accept any credentials at all. As far as I know, the --auth-server-whitelist option should only be used when trying to get Single-Sign-On (SSO) to work, but if you are fine with a log-in window it should work directly out of the box, but so far it doesn't. • How to print out information about Task Scheduler in powershell script?

  I am trying to print out information from the Task Scheduler from the local computer in a powershell script so other users can print out this information as well and not have to access the Task Scheduler. I need the script to print out the name, status, triggers, next run time, last run time, last run result, author and created. I can print out the information about the name, next run time, and last run time, but the rest wont print out when i run the script.   I have a problem where any program is started under Windows Vista, the following error message is generated Bad Image C;\PROGRA~1\Google\GOOGLE~3\GOEC62~1.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. This happens for every program started, including those that start automatically at boot time. My Google-fu is failing to solve this for me. I have already tried an "sfc /scannow" which did find some problems, but it said that it could not correct them. What might cause this problem? How might it be resolved?

• Samba share doesn't have write permissions

  alright, I've got one that should be really simple. I want a wide open smb share for my Windows 7 machine. Everyone should be able to access it, regardless of domain or username or anything. My smb.conf has: security = share guest account = nobody Along with: [DC_Backup] path = /Windows_Backups/DC comment = Backup of Domain Controller force user = nobody guest ok = yes public = yes read only = no I can access it, but I cannot write to it. Windows keeps telling me I "need permission to perform this action" Where do I start?

• Starting services in batch file on windows 7

  I have a fairly simple batch file which does just one thing - "net start myservice". This batch file gets shortcut-ed in a program group by installer so that users can simply click on the icon and get things started (or stopped). All works well in XP for the users with admin rights. But things get hairy on Win7 as the batch need to be run "as administrator" explicitly and often users don't know this. So my question is how to make this friendly? Telling users to right click and run as admin on Win7 and simply click on XP is kind of weird twist. I need a smart automatic simple thingy. I could probably use "runas/user:administrator" in the batch itself, but this "administrator" account might not be available on some machines. I'm looking for a universal solution for installing things like this on any Windows box. Ideas? How would you do this?

• Upgrade no raid server to raid

  I have just learned that our PDC has a single drive with 2 partitions. I also know that this drive has bad blocks as recorded in the event log. What I would like to do is to convert this to a RAID solution with a nice balance between economy and performance. I will admit that I have only configured servers with RAID from scratch, and have no experience upgrading an existing system into a RAID system. In fact, I'm not sure it is even possible. Since this is the PDC for 350+ workstations downtime is important. I'd like to hear from other System Administators how they would tackle this and their recommendations for all devices. At this time it seems to me that I can replace the existing drive and then restore from backup or install a controller, drives, configure the RAID an basically start from scratch. • Nginx (for static files) and Apache (for dynamic content)?

  So, my entire application runs on apache just fine. However, I want to test how much the requests per second increases if I put all static files through nginx instead. I found this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/869001/how-to-serve-all-existing-static-files-directly-with-nginx-but-proxy-to-apache-t But I have a couple problems. I'm completely new to nginx, so I'm not sure where to put the configuration. (The file is at /etc/nginx/nginx.conf, but I don't know if I just add the code to the bottom or what?) Also, how can I have both servers running at the same time? Is it because they both listen on port 80? Right now I have to stop one to start the other, and that's as far as I've gotten. I set up a task and "Last Run Result" says "%1 is not a valid Win32 application" The event properties describe more failure: "Task Scheduler failed to launch action "D:\InetPub\tools\something\build.php" in instance "{88cc01f4-9554-4b8f-9836-34d806337d7f}" of task "\Something". Additional Data: Error Value: 2147942593." Task Category: Action failed to start Is it possible to run scripts using the task scheduler?   I have moved old version of webpage to some subdirectory: http://www.smth.com/old/. But all resources (images, css, etc.) in HTML are linked with slash symbol at the start. So browser still tries to load them from root path. For example old/test.html contains: <img src="/images/lma_logo.ico" /> <!-- not working !--> <img src="images/lma_logo.ico" /> <!-- working !--> How can I rewrite ulrs to load resources from the "old" dir if urls still starts with "/"?

• Run Active Directory Admin Center as another user

  I am trying to run Active Directory Admin Center (dsac.exe) on Windows 7 as another user by means of creating a shortcut, rather than having to Shift+Right click and specify the user. On Windows XP I could create a runas shortcut like this (forget for a moment that dsac.exe does not exist in Windows XP): runas /user:DOMAIN\user dsac.exe When I run this on Windows 7, the cmd style windows pops up and asks for the password for DOMAIN\user, but I get the following message: Attempting to start dsac.exe as user "DOMAIN\user" ... RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - dsac.exe 740: The requested operation requires elevation. How do I get Windows 7 to automatically run dsac.exe as a specified user? I'm happy to fill in a password prompt for the specified user, but would be even happier if there was a solution that cached the password, so I didn't have to enter it more than once a day.

• Ubuntu from console/command-line/shell

  Earlies linux distros though required lot of manual work they were quite good to use from commandline. If the X-server didn't start or you just want a shell to work they all supported. Network was configured by init; sound was up and ready; new devices inserted would be configured and their configureation was placed in fstab. Also there were small scripts I found on many distros which on X used windows while on console they switched to ncurses. But now this all needs GUI with a desktop manager (KDE, GNOME) for the new paradigms :'-( require GUI (NetworkManger, hal etc.). So if on just command line you have to be root, looks like they believe only geeky admins need that, and need to edit config files or type big commands. Any way so that this is easy in Ubnubtu through shell again.
