  • Windows 2000 uninstall on a dual-boot 2000/XP system

    - by Viktor
While several questions have already been answered about removing an OS from a dual-booting machine, most refer to Windows 7 vs. Linux/Vista/XP. I have W2K installed on my older HDD (Drive C). Later on I bought a new HDD and installed XP's under W2K environment. Each time I turned my PC on, I had the choice of W2K or XP OS, which I still have. I eventually stopped using the w2k OS and as the older HDD where this OS is installed is getting old, I plan to remove it completely. The problem is that the active master boot record is on this very HDD. So when I remove the HDD, I get no OS loader, no matter what boot drive I choose in BIOS. Apparently I have to set the boot record on the newer HDD with XP's. Some advise to use the bootable XP CD and try to set the active MBR from there.. I don't have the CD anymore. Regardless, I suspect there is much less to solving this problem than running the recovery console, like a simple boot.ini file edit. But I might be wrong.

  • Fedora 12 - login panel: disable automatic login

    - by ThreaderSlash
Hello Everybody I have just replaced my FC11 by the FC12. To put skype up and running I used autoten and choose to not have the automatic login enable. After running it the skype was working nicely. However the next time I restarted the machine, on the login panel appeared ""automatic login"" option. I went to /etc/gdm/custom.conf and added the command AutomaticLoginEnable=false Restart the system and although automatic login isn't active anymore, the ""automatic login"" option still appears as if it were an option to be picked from the login panel. I googled around but didn't find how to get rid of it. Any suggestions? All comments are highly appreciated.

  • Change default mouse cursor on OSX Mavericks

    - by Ziarno
Is there any way to change the default mouse cursor on OSX Mavericks? More precisely, I'd like to make it look like in windows, and even more precisely I want to move the 'point' where the mouse cursor actually 'clicks' - on windows it's on the very end of the arrow, even outside of it, and on mac it's a little inside the arrow. I've done some research, and all the websites either tell me to get Mighty Mouse, which doesn't work on my system, and other's tell me how to change the size of my cursor.

  • How to read MAC address with sed vs python

Earlier, I could read MAC address with awk tools in Windows or Windows PE 4.0, but now it don't support Windows PE 4.0 64-bit. • Using Roboform with PuTTY

    - by Jake
I recently discovered and fell in love with Roboform. In less than a week it's become indispensable. So far I've only seen Roboform's ability to fill out fields in web browsers and Windows GUI apps. I'm an app developer and sometimes I need to use Telnet/SSH. My SSH client of choice is PuTTY, but I can't find any way to integrate Roboform with PuTTY. Is this possible? If not, is there another [free] SSH client that will work with Roboform?

  • Mac Mini Wake on Lan

    - by ILMV
My Mac Mini has a setting in the Energy Saver category called Wake for Ethernet network access. Now the way I read this option is that any network access to the Mac whilst it is asleep will wake it up, but it doesn't. I have read that I have to send it the magic packet to wake it up, but what I really want to do is be able to simply attempt to access the Mini over the network and it wake up on demand without sending a magic packet. Can this be done? If it helps I am using a Netgear router.

  • Unlimited and multi-computer online storage solutions with automatic backup

    - by JRL
As the title says, what are the existing online storage solutions that provide: unlimited storage automatic backup and allow for an unlimited number of computers (use not tied to a single computer)? There are several existing questions on this site related to online storage solutions, but none that is specifically targeted to what I want, so I thought I'd ask the question. This wikipedia article lists some of them, are there others? How do they compare in terms of price, feature set and ease of use? Update: Kinda disappointed no one has any answers to this so far. JungleDisk looks promising, anyone have experience with it? Update 2: To answer the comments, what I'm looking for definitely DOES exist. These solutions all seem to fit the bill: BackMii CrashPlan DataPreserve Humyo JungleDisk KeepVault SpiderOak And some of them are quite cheap (CrashPlan is $100 a year). For unlimited space and computers, I'd say that's pretty good. Does anyone have experience with CrashPlan or any other of the above solutions?

  • Is there a good Lotus Notes open-source alternative?

    - by Ben S
At my work we use Lotus Notes 6.5 for our email, meeting scheduling and instant messaging. I can't stand the horrible UI, buggy meeting scheduling and overall '90s feel when using it and would love to replace it with open-source alternatives. So far I've been able to setup Thunderbird for email, and I should also be able to configure pidgin to do IM, but I can't find any replacement for the meeting scheduling. I need to be able to receive meeting requests and respond to them. I've looked around trying to get the Thunderbird plugin Lightning to manage the scheduling, but everything I've read so far requires me to export .ics files from Lotus Notes or otherwise keep Lotus Notes around for day-to-day activities. I've also looked into using Evolution as the client, but I found even less information for it than I did for Thunderbird. How can I easily send, receive and respond to Lotus Notes meetings using an open-source alternative? Alternatively, if there exists a full drop-in replacement to Lotus Notes I would also consider it. Note: My desktop at work is a Windows XP machine, though I wouldn't be opposed to a solution requiring cygwin at this point. Edit: I have no power over the server. I only want a compatible client.

  • Looking for definitive answer to accessing a network drive/NAS/SMB drive via Windows 7 HOME and Windows 7 Professional. Is it possible and how?

    - by Rob
I want to be able to access my Lacie 2Big network drive in Windows 7 Explorer. I have a machine with Windows 7 Home and one with Windows 7 Professional. Neither Windows 7, home or pro, can access the drive. The Windows 7 Home machine displays the drive in its Explorer, with the capacity, but on clicking the icon, I get another window, blank with the busy pointer which does not eventually stop. The drive is working perfectly. How do I know this? Because I can access it with no problems on my Apple Mac, Windows XP home and Ubuntu machines on the same network as the Windows 7 machines. Except for the Windows XP home machine that required Lacie ethernet agent program, the Mac and the Ubuntu machines needed no setup, the drive appeared like any other drive. So my 2 questions: Is it possible to access a network share drive, e.g. a NAS like Lacie 2big in Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional. If so how? I read on Microsoft's own forums and elsewhere that network sharing drives, e.g. via SambaSMB is NOT possible on Windows 7 Home. Is this true? http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprovirt/thread/e08c3500-a722-4b44-b644-64f94f63c8e5/ This question is a more comprehensive re-write of my earlier question: Windows 7 / TCP/IP network share guide - looking for to resolve failure to mount lacie network drive but works on XP,Linux,Mac. ...where I haven't received a solving answer, and I have tried to find a solution myself. Lacie themselves haven't offered a definitive solving answer either, but I suspect it's not just their drives but SMB/network share/NAS in general... This is utterly pathetic that Windows 7 home cannot access something as simple as a network drive, especially given that Windows XP home can. My research so far: Apparently it is possible on Windows 7 Professional, via the Local Security Policy, only on Windows 7 Professional, not Windows 7 Home: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/7357-local-security-policy-editor-open.html http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/accessing-local-security-policy-in-windows-7-home/0c8300d0-1d23-4de0-9b37-935c01a7d17a http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprosecurity/thread/14fc5037-3386-4973-b5d8-2167272ff5ad/ http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/75-63-windows-samba-issue Another solution offered is editing the registry, doesn't look promising to me, fiddly and not guaranteed, hard to produce a complete solution I think, given that everyone's registry can vary. Registry key edit solutons: https://www.lacie.com/uk/mystuff/ticket/ticket.htm?tid=101278940 http://networksecurity.farzadbanifatemi.com/security-policy/how-to-access-local-security-policy-windows-7-home-premium Related: Does Windows 7 Home Premium support backing up to a network share Network Copy to Windows 7 File Share Fails and Kills Network Connection

  • Mac OS X Terminal: mouse support?

    - by avetis.kazarian
Is there a native option (ie. without installing extra soft/package/plugins) to enable mouse support in the Terminal app? Actually, I'm using a lot vim with the option set mouse=a (activating mouse features). But it seems that Terminal don't support all xterm's features. It appears (after some googling) that Terminal had once the mouse support, but I wonder where did it go. N.B: I really want mouse support in Terminal, not only for vim, so please, don't suggest MacVim :]

  • Excel 2003 charts not looking right in 2007

    - by AppsByAaron
I'm not exactly sure this goes here but I don't know where else to look for help. I have some Excel files containing charts made with Excel 2003. When I open the file in Excel 2007 and save it (non 2007) is messes up the charts. However, when in Excel 2007 and I Save as a .xlsx type the charts don't mess up. Is there any help for me to be able to not have the charts mess up when simply saving the 2003 file with Excel 2007? Hope that's confusing. Thanks.

  • OneNote and GroupWise

I love the integration between the Microsoft OneNote 2010 beta and Outlook, where you can press a button to send an email to a note page, and the email will be nicely formatted when it gets there, with attachments preserved, etc. Does anyone know of any similar integration for Novell GroupWise?

  • Why isn't the scripts in my autoload folder being executed in Vim?

My bundle folder looks like this: .../bundle/ +-- vim-pathogen ¦   +-- autoload ¦   +-- pathogen.vim +-- vim-smoothscroll +-- autoload +-- smooth_scroll.vim And my vimrc file includes this: let s:root = fnamemodify(resolve(expand(":p")), ":h") " Initiate pathogen. exec "source " . s:root . "/vimfiles/bundle/vim-pathogen/autoload/pathogen.vim" exec pathogen#infect() My vimrc file is a symlink located in ~ but pointing to a folder inside my Dropbox folder.   • Audio recording and playback in Silverlight

    - by Ramesh
I have a Silverlight 4 application that records user's voice through the mic. Now, as soon as the recording is completed, I need to play the recorded voice back to the user before posting it to the server. Is it at all possible to play it back to the user without getting into format conversions etc? Any ideas are welcome. Thanks!

  • Configure different set of keyboard shortcuts for copy/paste in Photoshop

    - by Diodeus
Being left-handed, I use the mouse in my left hand. In most applications I use Ctrl + Insert or Shift + Insert to copy and paste (with my right hand). For some bone-headed reason, this is not supported in Photoshop, so I have to use right-click Copy sub-menus, which is a lot slower. Is there a way to configure Photoshop to use Ctrl + Insert to copy and Shift + Insert to paste?

  • Install Additional Printer Drivers (x86) on Vista (x64) - Can't find suitable (x86) ntprint.inf

    - by jmohr
I have a printer connected to my computer that I'd like to share on my home network - shouldn't be a problem. The computer the printer is connected to is running Vista Ultimate x64. The computers I'm trying to share with are x86 Windows XP Professional and x86 Vista, so I need to install additional (x86) drivers. I checked the box to add x86 printer drivers and then it asked for the location of the drivers. I browsed to the location and clicked OK. It then prompted "Please provide path to Windows media (x86 processor). When I click "Browse..." it wants the location of a file named ntprint.inf It looks like it's asking for a Windows (x86) installation disk. I put one in but I can't seem to find this file on the 32-bit Vista install disk Where is the proper place to find this file?

  • Apps crashing with EXC_BAD_ACCESS when changing to a custom keyboard layout

    - by Adam Lindberg
    I have a custom layout installed (svdvorak_mac6.keylayout). After a reboot another keyboard layout was selected, so I selected my usual one instead. This lead to a lot of apps suddenly starting to crash (Chrome, Skype, Adium etc). I can change to any other built in layout for OS X, but as soon as I choose one custom installed one (either form ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts/ or from /Library/Keyboard Layouts/) the apps crash. The only thing I can remember that I did before the reboot was to install Google's video chat plugin for the browser. Here's the crash report from Adium: Process: Adium [372] Path: /Applications/Adium.app/Contents/MacOS/Adium Identifier: com.adiumX.adiumX Version: 1.4.1 (1.4.1) Code Type: X86 (Native) Parent Process: launchd [182] Date/Time: 2010-12-22 22:39:47.833 +0100 OS Version: Mac OS X 10.6.5 (10H574) Report Version: 6 Interval Since Last Report: 257401 sec Crashes Since Last Report: 39 Per-App Interval Since Last Report: 1178959 sec Per-App Crashes Since Last Report: 8 Anonymous UUID: 7CBACDEB-FBAF-4CD5-9C15-7AEA8AC4B5EF Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000 Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread Thread 0 Crashed: Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread 0 com.apple.HIToolbox 0x99722b6d islGetInputSourceProperty + 1107 1 com.apple.HIToolbox 0x9972262c TSMGetInputSourceProperty + 526 2 com.apple.HIToolbox 0x9972787a _ISSendWindowServerKeyboardLayoutUpdate + 412 3 com.apple.HIToolbox 0x9972622b _TSMSetInputSourceSelected + 1429 4 com.apple.HIToolbox 0x99980209 TSMMessagePortCallBack + 574 5 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x9226840c __CFMessagePortPerform + 540 6 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x921d34db __CFRunLoopRun + 6523 7 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x921d1464 CFRunLoopRunSpecific + 452 8 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x921d1291 CFRunLoopRunInMode + 97 9 com.apple.HIToolbox 0x99717f58 RunCurrentEventLoopInMode + 392 10 com.apple.HIToolbox 0x99717d0f ReceiveNextEventCommon + 354 11 com.apple.HIToolbox 0x99717b94 BlockUntilNextEventMatchingListInMode + 81 12 com.apple.AppKit 0x9189478d _DPSNextEvent + 847 13 com.apple.AppKit 0x91893fce -[NSApplication nextEventMatchingMask:untilDate:inMode:dequeue:] + 156 14 com.apple.AppKit 0x91856247 -[NSApplication run] + 821 15 com.apple.AppKit 0x9184e2d9 NSApplicationMain + 574 16 com.adiumX.adiumX 0x0000322e 0x1000 + 8750 Thread 1: Dispatch queue: com.apple.libdispatch-manager 0 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968f5982 kevent + 10 1 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968f609c _dispatch_mgr_invoke + 215 2 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968f5559 _dispatch_queue_invoke + 163 3 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968f52fe _dispatch_worker_thread2 + 240 4 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968f4d81 _pthread_wqthread + 390 5 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968f4bc6 start_wqthread + 30 Thread 2: 0 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968f4a12 __workq_kernreturn + 10 1 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968f4fa8 _pthread_wqthread + 941 2 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968f4bc6 start_wqthread + 30 Thread 3: com.apple.CFSocket.private 0 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968ee0c6 select$DARWIN_EXTSN + 10 1 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x92211c83 __CFSocketManager + 1091 2 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968fc85d _pthread_start + 345 3 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968fc6e2 thread_start + 34 Thread 4: 0 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968f4a12 __workq_kernreturn + 10 1 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968f4fa8 _pthread_wqthread + 941 2 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968f4bc6 start_wqthread + 30 Thread 5: 0 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968cf15a semaphore_timedwait_signal_trap + 10 1 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968fcce5 _pthread_cond_wait + 1066 2 libSystem.B.dylib 0x9692bac8 pthread_cond_timedwait_relative_np + 47 3 ...apple.AddressBook.framework 0x9310043f -[ABRemoteImageLoader workLoop] + 283 4 com.apple.Foundation 0x97822bf0 -[NSThread main] + 45 5 com.apple.Foundation 0x97822ba0 __NSThread__main__ + 1499 6 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968fc85d _pthread_start + 345 7 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968fc6e2 thread_start + 34 Thread 6: 0 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968cf0fa mach_msg_trap + 10 1 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968cf867 mach_msg + 68 2 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x921d237f __CFRunLoopRun + 2079 3 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x921d1464 CFRunLoopRunSpecific + 452 4 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x921d1291 CFRunLoopRunInMode + 97 5 com.apple.Foundation 0x9785b7d0 +[NSURLConnection(NSURLConnectionReallyInternal) _resourceLoadLoop:] + 329 6 com.apple.Foundation 0x97822bf0 -[NSThread main] + 45 7 com.apple.Foundation 0x97822ba0 __NSThread__main__ + 1499 8 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968fc85d _pthread_start + 345 9 libSystem.B.dylib 0x968fc6e2 thread_start + 34 Thread 0 crashed with X86 Thread State (32-bit): eax: 0x00000670 ebx: 0x9972272e ecx: 0x00000000 edx: 0x00000002 edi: 0xa0c3b214 esi: 0x00000004 ebp: 0xbfffe6c8 esp: 0xbfffe660 ss: 0x0000001f efl: 0x00010202 eip: 0x99722b6d cs: 0x00000017 ds: 0x0000001f es: 0x0000001f fs: 0x00000000 gs: 0x00000037 cr2: 0x00000000 Binary Images: 0x1000 - 0x1a0ff7 +com.adiumX.adiumX 1.4.1 (1.4.1) <136586E8-F3F5-99ED-DB1F-48C0027686CB> /Applications/Adium.app/Contents/MacOS/Adium 0x1f9000 - 0x23efe7 +AIUtilities ??? • FFSERVER - streaming an ASF video as Webm output

    - by Emmanuel Brunet
I'm trying to stream an IP webcam ASF live stream to a ffserver to output a webm video format. The server starts successfully but the ffserver commands used to feed the ffserver fails and generates a core dump. Environment Debian 7.5 ffmpeg 2.2 Input stream $ ffprobe http://account:password@webcam/videostream.asf Input #0, asf, from 'http://admin:alpha1237@webcam/videostream.asf': Duration: N/A, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 32 kb/s Stream #0:0: Video: mjpeg (MJPG / 0x47504A4D), yuvj422p(pc), 640x480, 25 tbr, 1k tbn, 1k tbc Stream #0:1: Audio: adpcm_ima_wav ([17][0][0][0] / 0x0011), 8000 Hz, 1 channels, s16p, 32 kb/s ffserver configuration my ffserver configuration is : Port 8091 RTSPPort 554 BindAddress 192.168.1.62 MaxHTTPConnections 1000 MaxClients 100 MaxBandwidth 1000 CustomLog - <Feed webcam.ffm> File /tmp/webcam.ffm FileMaxSize 500M ACL allow localhost ACL allow 192.168.0.0 192.168.255.255 </Feed> <Stream webcam.webm> # Output stream URL definition Feed webcam.ffm # Feed from which to receive video Format webm # Audio settings AudioCodec vorbis AudioBitRate 64 # Audio bitrate # Video settings VideoCodec libvpx VideoSize 640x480 # Video resolution VideoFrameRate 25 # Video FPS AVOptionVideo flags +global_header # Parameters passed to encoder # (same as ffmpeg command-line parameters) AVOptionVideo cpu-used 0 AVOptionVideo qmin 10 AVOptionVideo qmax 42 AVOptionVideo quality good AVOptionAudio flags +global_header PreRoll 15 StartSendOnKey # VideoBitRate 32 # Video bitrate </Stream> <Stream status.html> Format status # Only allow local people to get the status ACL allow localhost ACL allow 192.168.0.0 192.168.255.255 </Stream> ffmpeg feed I run the following command that fails $ ffmpeg -i http://account:password@webcam/videostream.asf http://192.168.1.62:8091/webcam.ffm http://192.168.1.62:8091/webcam.ffm Input #0, asf, from 'http://account:password@webcam/videostream.asf': Duration: N/A, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 32 kb/s Stream #0:0: Video: mjpeg (MJPG / 0x47504A4D), yuvj422p(pc), 640x480, 25 tbr, 1k tbn, 1k tbc Stream #0:1: Audio: adpcm_ima_wav ([17][0][0][0] / 0x0011), 8000 Hz, mono, s16p, 32 kb/s [swscaler @ 0x36a80c0] deprecated pixel format used, make sure you did set range correctly Segmentation fault I tryed $ ffmpeg -i http://account:password@webcam/videostream.asf -pix_fmt yuv420p http://192.168.1.62:8091/webcam.ffm But it raises the same error. Thanks for your help Edit For an easy testing (I thought), I tried to publish the whole ASF stream as is, meaning connecting the ASF webcam output stream to the ffserver that outputs ASF format too. And thus with mirrored encoding so I changed the ffserver configuration to ... <Stream webcam.asf> Feed webcam.ffm Format asf VideoFrameRate 25 VideoSize 640X480 VideoBitRate 256 VideoBufferSize 1000 VideoGopSize 30 AudioBitRate 32 StartSendOnKey </Stream> ... And the output is now : Input #0, asf, from 'http://admin:alpha1237@webcam/videostream.asf': Duration: N/A, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 32 kb/s Stream #0:0: Video: mjpeg (MJPG / 0x47504A4D), yuvj422p(pc), 640x480, 1k tbr, 1k tbn, 1k tbc Stream #0:1: Audio: adpcm_ima_wav ([17][0][0][0] / 0x0011), 8000 Hz, mono, s16p, 32 kb/s [swscaler @ 0x3d620c0] deprecated pixel format used, make sure you did set range correctly Output #0, ffm, to 'http://192.168.1.62:8091/webcam.ffm': Metadata: creation_time : now encoder : Lavf55.40.100 Stream #0:0: Audio: wmav2, 22050 Hz, mono, fltp, 32 kb/s Metadata: encoder : Lavc55.64.100 wmav2 Stream #0:1: Video: msmpeg4v3 (msmpeg4), yuv420p, 640x480, q=2-31, 256 kb/s, 1k fps, 1000k tbn, 1k tbc Metadata: Stream mapping: Stream #0:1 -> #0:0 (adpcm_ima_wav -> wmav2) Stream #0:0 -> #0:1 (mjpeg -> msmpeg4) Press [q] to stop, [?] for help Segmentation fault I can't even forward the stream.
