• Smartcards for storing gpg/ssh keys (Linux) - what do I need?

  Hi All, I'm interested in storing my SSH keys and gpg keys on a smartcard for added security. However, I'm a bit uncertain on a few points, which are as follows: How many keys can I get on a card? I assume both SSH and GPG can store keys on the card. Is there a limit to key size? I see a lot of cards saying they support 2048-bit keys, what about larger sizes? Hardware: can anyone recommend a card/reader combination that works well? I've done a fair amount of research and it seems PC/SC readers can be a bit iffy - is this your experience? Have I missed anything I should be asking? Are there any other hurdles? I'm aware fsf europe give away cards with membership - I'm not sure I want to join, but... are these cards any good?

• Forum software alternative to phpBB3

  I've been using phpBB3 for quite some time now. It seems to me this forum software hasn't evolved at all in all these years. Installing mods is a hassle, updating it to a newer version a real pain in the arse and moderating is not intuitive at all. Besides, I find there's just no way to stop spam on it. Lots of web software have made a great job controlling spam, but phpBB3 still doesn't, at least not without too much complex and tedious work. Since my last attempt to update to the latest version broke it, I'm finally fed up with it, and decide I'm not wasting a minute more in mantaining such a beast. I'm looking for a free software (free as in free beer and free as in free speech) alternative. So SMF is not an alternative at the moment. The most important feature I'm looking for is there must be a script to migrate all of the current phpBB users and posts into the new system. Out of all the alternatives out there, does any of them support these features? Which one do you recommend?

• How to use a list of values in Excel as filter in a query

  It often happens that a customer provides us with a list of items for which to extract certain information. Imagine, for example, that our clients wish to have the header information of the sales orders only for certain orders. Most likely he will give us a list of items in a column in Excel, or, less probably, a simple text file with the identification code:     As long as the given values ??are at best a dozen, it costs us nothing to copy and paste those values ??in our SSMS and place them in a WHERE clause, using the IN operator, making sure to include the quotes in the case of alphanumeric elements (the database sample is AdventureWorks2008R2): SELECT * FROM Sales.SalesOrderHeader AS SOH WHERE SOH.SalesOrderNumber IN ( 'SO43667' ,'SO43709' ,'SO43726' ,'SO43746' ,'SO43782' ,'SO43796') Clearly, the need to add commas and quotes becomes an hassle when dealing with hundreds of items (which of course has happened to us!). It’d be comfortable to do a simple copy and paste, leaving the items as they are pasted, and make sure the query works fine. We can have this commodity via a User Defined Function, that returns items in a table. Simply we’ll provide the function with an input string parameter containing the pasted items. • Use Case Actors - Primary versus Secondary

  The Unified Modeling Language (UML1) defines an Actor (from UseCases) as: An actor specifies a role played by a user or any other system that interacts with the subject. In Alistair Cockburn’s book “Writing Effective Use Cases” (2) Actors are further defined as follows: Primary Actor: The primary actor of a use case is the stakeholder that calls on the system to deliver one of its services. It has a goal with respect to the system – one that can be satisfied by its operation. The primary actor is often, but not always, the actor who triggers the use case. Supporting Actors: A supporting actor in a use case in an external actor that provides a service to the system under design. It might be a high-speed printer, a web service, or humans that have to do some research and get back to us. In a 2006 article (3) Cockburn refined the definitions slightly to read: Primary Actors: The Actor(s) using the system to achieve a goal. The Use Case documents the interactions between the system and the actors to achieve the goal of the primary actor. Secondary Actors: Actors that the system needs assistance from to achieve the primary actor’s goal. Finally, the Oracle Unified Method (OUM) concurs with the UML definition of Actors, along with Cockburn’s refinement, but OUM also includes the following: Secondary actors may or may not have goals that they expect to be satisfied by the use case, the primary actor always has a goal, and the use case exists to satisfy the primary actor. Now that we are on the same “page”, let’s consider two examples: A bank loan officer wants to review a loan application from a customer, and part of the process involves a real-time credit rating check. Use Case Name: Review Loan Application Primary Actor: Loan Officer Secondary Actors: Credit Rating System A Human Resources manager wants to change the job code of an employee, and as part of the process, automatically notify several other departments within the company of the change. Use Case Name: Maintain Job Code Primary Actor: Human Resources Manager Secondary Actors: None The first example is quite straight forward; we need to define the Secondary Actor because without the “Credit Rating System” we cannot successfully complete the Use Case. In other words, the goal of the Primary Actor is to successfully complete the Loan Application, but they need the explicit “help” of the Secondary Actor (Credit Rating System) to achieve this goal. The second example is where people sometimes get confused. Within OUM we would not include the “other departments” as Secondary Actors and therefore not include them on the Use Case diagram for the following reasons: The other departments are not required for the successful completion of the Use Case We are not expecting any response from the other departments (at least within the bounds of the Use Case under discussion) Having said that, within the detail of the Use Case Specification Main Success Scenario, we would include something like: “The system sends a notification to the related department heads (ref. Business Rule BR101)” Now let’s consider one final example. A Procurement Manager wants to place a “bid” for some goods using an On-Line Trading Community (B2B version of eBay) Use Case Name: Create Bid Primary Actor: Procurement Manager Secondary Actors: On-Line Trading Community You might wonder why the Trading Community is listed as a Secondary Actor, i.e. if all we are going to do is place a bid for a specific quantity of goods at a given price and send that off to the Trading Community, then why would the Trading Community need to “assist” in that Use Case? Well, once again, it comes back to the “User Experience” and how we want to optimize that when we think about our Use Case, and ultimately, when the developer comes to assembling some code. In this final example, the Procurement Manager cannot successfully complete the “Create Bid” Use Case until they receive an affirmative confirmation back from the Trading Community that the Bid has been accepted. Therefore, the Trading Community must become a Secondary Actor and be referenced both on the Use Case diagram and Use Case Specification. Any astute readers who are wondering about the “single sitting” rule will have to wait for a follow-up Blog entry to find out how that consideration can be factored in!!! Happy Use Case writing! • Drobo not mounting. Disk repair doesn't work either.

  Hi, While transferring data to my 2nd gen Drobo power went out. Now my Drobo is not mounting to my OS X 10.6.3 I have tried Disk Repair and this error message appears: Verify and Repair volume “disk1s2” Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume. Invalid key length Invalid record count Catalog file entry not found for extent The volume could not be verified completely. Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files. I tried DiskWarrior too but it doesn't work either. It gives me that I need more memory to continue and software shuts down. Any one know solution to this one?

• Copying Firefox profile

  My computer (well, Windows XP) failed. I got everything off the HD, including my Firefox profile, which I especially wanted because I had lots of open unsaved tabs in my current session (yes, I know that's bad practice!), but also to rescue bookmarks etc. I've now got Windows 7, and reinstalled Firefox. I've read the instructions on the Firefox website about creating new profiles, and I'm not sure they're very intuitive. It says that you can copy all the contents from an old profile into a new 'default' one, which I have done (http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-Firefox-profiles). However, when I open Firefox, the data from this profile isn't being used and Firefox doesn't seem to recognise the data that's there. What am I doing wrong?!

  I pay monthly for a website hosting service that provides me with PHP and FTP support. I can upload my files and create directories and such. Now, I am wondering... If I upload a folder full of images.. or music.. basically personal stuff to my website and name it 'junk1234' can other people find it? Or even search engines? If so, How would I restrict any but those who know the folder name from seeing files in it? Possibly httaccess files? I also have cpanel installed.

• Use Outlook 2007 to connect to mail using active sync protocol

  Has anyone tried connected outlook(I am running v2007 on Windows 7) to a mail service using the MS Exchange Active Sync protocol? I know it is intended for mobile devices, but to me it looks like it is becoming the latest 'de facto' mail protocol for email/calendar/contact sync'ing due to the iPhone's support for it. I just think it would be an elegant solution to get my lotus notes mail in outlook(my company uses lotus notes with traveler service installed that exposes mail over the active sync protocol so I can currently read my notes mail via iPhone). This solution would probably eliminate the need for all the hacks needed to connect outlook to 'X' mail (Gmail, notes, etc) So, maybe someone out there has tried this or knows how to do it before spend time on more researching this. Thanks!

• Have VIM jump to a ctag in an existing tab

  I have ctags configured with my vim installation. My habit is to usually have all of the relevant files I'm working on open in tabs in vim all at once. The "problem" is that if I use Ctrl+] to jump to a ctag in a file I'm editing, it will replace the buffer in that tab, even though I have another tab already open containing that symbol. It would be much better if it just switched to that tab and jumped to the symbol there instead. This way I would always have a 1-to-1 tab-to-file ratio. I noticed in the Changenotes for the taglist.vim plugin (which I also use) has an entry that says 1. Added support for jumping to a tag/file in a new or existing tab from the taglist window (works only with Vim7 and above). However, I couldn't find anything in the documentation for Taglist (or Ctags) about how to actually do this. Can any vim gurus fill me in? Thanks!

• How Can I Restrict VSFTPD to a Particular Local Group?

  I'd like to control VSFTPD access by adding users to a group such that only members of the defined group can access the FTP services. I am thinking I can do this by modifying /etc/pam.d/vsftpd, but am not sure how to get started. Or is this only for virtual users in VSFTPD? I am aware of user_list and this does not seem to support groups. This doesn't provide the function I am looking for which is described above. If I am mistaken though this would be great. • Can't Launch Firefox on OS X 10.6

  When I try to run Firefox 3.6 or 4 beta I get a message saying: Profile Missing Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible. I have tried running the profile manger from the command line using: /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -ProfileManager I get the same message in the popup, but I also get: Error: Access was denied while trying to open files in your profile directory. I have tried deleting firefox and reinstalling it. I have also tried deleting anything related to Firefox or Mozilla in the ~/Library/Application Support directories, but nothing seems to help. In addition I have run the disk utility to fix any permissions issues. If I create a new profile or run the command with sudo it works. It seem that that Firefox is trying to put the profile somewhere it doesn't have access to write, but I can't figure out how to change this location or change the permissions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• The Hot-Add Memory Hogs

  One of the more difficult tasks, when virtualizing a server, is to determine the amount of memory that Hypervisor should assign to the virtual machine. This requires accurate monitoring and, because of the consequences of setting the value too low, there is a great temptation to err on the side of over-provisioning. This results in fewer guest VMs and, in fact, with more accurate memory provisioning, many virtual environments could support 30% more VMs. In order to achieve a better consolidation (aka VM density) ratio, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 has introduced what Microsoft calls ‘Dynamic Memory’. This means that the start-up RAM VM memory assigned to guest virtual machines can be allowed to vary according to demand, changing dynamically while the VM is running, based on the workload of applications running inside. If demand outstrips supply, then memory can be rationed according to the ‘memory weight’ assigned to the guest VM. By this mechanism, memory becomes a shared resource that can be reallocated automatically as demand patterns vary. Unlike VMWare’s Memory Overcommit technology, the sum of all the memory allocations to each virtual machine will not exceed the total memory of the host computer. This is fine for applications that are self-regulating in their demands for memory, releasing memory back into the 'pool' when not under peak load. Other applications however, such as SQL Server Standard and Enterprise, are by nature, memory hogs under high workload; they can grab hot-add memory whilst running under load and then never release it. This requires more careful setting-up and the SQLOS team have provided some guidelines from for configuring SQL Server in virtual environments. Whereas VMWare’s Memory Overcommit is well-proven in a number of different configurations, Hyper-V’s ‘Dynamic Memory’ is new. So far, the indications are that it will improve the business case for virtualizing and it is probably a far more intuitive technology for the average IT professional to grasp. It is certainly worth testing to see whether it works for you.

• Is anyone else using OpenBSD as a router in the enterprise? What hardware are you running it on?

  We have an OpenBSD router at each of our locations, currently running on generic "homebrew" PC hardware in a 4U server case. Due to reliability concerns and space considerations we're looking at upgrading them to some proper server-grade hardware with support etc. These boxes serve as the routers, gateways, and firewalls at each site. At this point we're quite familiar with OpenBSD and Pf, so hesitant at moving away from the system to something else such as dedicated Cisco hardware. I'm currently thinking of moving the systems to some HP DL-series 1U machines (model yet to be determined). I'm curious to hear if other people use a setup like this in their business, or have migrated to or away from one.

• What is your best solution for task management?

  I have Outlook at work, Gmail at home and a BlackBerry (only syncs with work Outlook). I see that there are a number of online websites that support webbased task lists such as "remember the milk", etc. My biggest issue with Outlook is that I flag a number of emails as tasks and they show up as tasks in Outlook but NOT on my BlackBerry. I still haven't found a workaround to this. I see there is some BlackBerry sync tools but I am not sure if this will work with my corporate network. Any suggestions for getting this to work or another optimal task management solution that works at home, work and on the road?

  I'm experiencing some strange behavior: I have set the following policies: User Configuration\Administrative templates\Desktop\Active Desktop Enable active desktop [enabled] Active Desktop Wallpaper [set to local path -- quadruple checked; path is correct] Allow only bitmap wallpaper [disabled] gpupdate /force, log out, log back in, and the background is just black. • Any good PostgreSQL client for linux?

  stackoverflow points me "belongs-on-serverfault" on this, so crossposting. I am frustrated of not having a good Linux GUI administration and development tool for PostgreSQL. pgAdmin III is buggy and unusable piece of... hmm, software, compared to Windows-only PostgreSQL Maestro and EMS PostgreSQL manager. phpPgaAmin does not looks promising. EMS PostgreSQL manager can work under Wine, but such setup have a number of issues. Requirements are: Table data editing and browsing for large tables (1M+), able to jump by FK or some master-slave editing, GUI filtering and so on. ER diagrams with in-place schema editing Schema editing and browsing with all useful GUI support Schema changes log to put into DB versioning (migrations script). Tabbed interface to be able to work with a number of tables and SQL queries at once. And so on. Any ideas?

• Making folder available offline - Access denied (Windows XP)

  I have a drive on a server called "filestore" This has a folder called "users" in here, theres is a "users" folder. In there are folders such as - jsmith, jblogs, abrown - which correspond to usernames of our active directory. When a user logs on, the H: drive is mapped to their above mentioned folder - for example //filestore/users/jsmith I am trying to make one of these folders available offline in Windows XP. when i do so, i get an access is denied error. according to this - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275461 i need to make the root folder have read access to the users. This means, however, all the users will be able to get in all the folders (if they browse to //filestore/users/) How can I still achieve offline files for that particular users "h:" drive, and still have the other folders secured?

• Connect wired-only devices to a remote wireless access point?

  Hi everyone. In building A, I have a Netgear wireless access point using WPA2. Works great, no problems. In building B, I have some devices that only have wired Ethernet ports. They can't see my access point. What I need is a gizmo that connects over-the-air to my access point in building A, talks WPA2, and converts the packets to and from a wired Ethernet port. Netgear-access-point in building A      (WPA2 WiFi) Wireless bridge device          <-- Looking for this.      (Cat5 ethernet) My devices in building B. I've looked for devices on Amazon, but the descriptions are infuriatingly unclear. It says it supports WPA2, but does it support it as a client? Grrr... Any recommendations please?
