• Problem with domain getting turned to IP address for https

  I have a website that is using Windows Server 2003. The site is called https://mysite.com/ and at ip address 111.1.1.1. Now when I log into the site all my relative links that are generated using NavURL (<%# NavURL("Images/Menu/img.gif")%) are saying "http://111.1.1.1/Images/Menu/img.gif" instead of "https://mysite.com/Images/Menu/img.gif". This is causing an error because it needs to be secure. I'm sure there is a setting on the server somewhere to point to the name and not the ip, but I don't know where. Thanks for your help.

• Can't connect nonlocally after 12.10 upgrade

  I've just upgraded one of my systems from 12.04 to 12.10. Now I can't connect on that system beyond my local network. Connections within the local network seem to work fine, and I can make nonlocal connections from other machines (like the one I'm asking this question from). I suspect that some routing information has been messed up, but I don't know where to look for it. It's not a nameserver problem -- pinging outside sites by their IP addresses doesn't work either. I have another laptop next to this one, also running Kubuntu 12.10. On the one that can't connect, arp produces no output. On the other one, it produces 192.168.0.1 ether 00:23:69:fa:ce:ae C wlan0 On the working machine, the output of netstat starts with some tcp entries. On the nonworking one, those entries are absent. I asked this question on the Ubuntu forum but haven't gotten any answers there. One further complication: since the troublesome machine has no outside connection, it's extremely difficult to download anything to it. For what it's worth, "ping 8.8.8.8" produces "connect: Network is unreachable". Update: after a lot of fiddling, I have my external world back. I don't know what the key action was, but the first indication of progress was that "ping 8.8.8.8" worked. At that point I still didn't have a working nameserver, so external URLs didn't work. But I did this (based on an online post, of course): sudo dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf and answered Yes to all prompts. That did the trick!! Apparently my problem was unique, or close to it, since I couldn't find any online references to it: local net working, remote net not working, including explicit IP addresses. So I suppose that if no one else has this problem, no one cares about the solution!!

• State Changes in a Component Based Architecture [closed]

  I'm currently working on a game and using the naive component based architecture thingie (Entities are a bag of components, entity.Update() calls Update on each updateable component), while the addition of new features is really simple, it makes a few things really difficult: a) multithreading / currency b) networking c) unit testing. Multithreading / Concurrency is difficult because I basically have to do poor mans concurrency (running the entity updates in separate threads while locking only stuff that crashes (like lists) and ignoring the staleness of read state (some states are already updated, others aren't)) Networking: There are no explicit state changes that I could efficiently push over the net. Unit testing: All updates may or may not conflict, so automated testing is at least awkward. I was thinking about these issues a bit and would like your input on these changes / idea: Switch from the naive cba to a cba with sub systems that work on lists of components Make all state changes explicit Combine 1 and 2 :p Example world update: statePostProcessing.Wait() // ensure that post processing has finished Apply(postProcessedState) state = new StateBag() Concurrently( () => LifeCycleSubSystem.Update(state), // populates the state bag () => MovementSubSystem.Update(state), // populates the state bag .... }) statePostProcessing = Future(() => PostProcess(state)) statePostProcessing.Start() // Tick is finished, the post processing happens in the background So basically the changes are (consistently) based on the data for the last tick; the post processing can a) generate network packages and b) fix conflicts / remove useless changes (example: entity has been destroyed - ignore movement etc.). EDIT: To clarify the granularity of the state changes: If I save these post processed state bags and apply them to an empty world, I see exactly what has happened in the game these state bags originated from - "Free" replay capability. EDIT2: I guess I should have used the term Event instead of State Change and point out that I kind of want to use the Event Sourcing pattern

• Documents stored on separate internal drive, Ubuntu doesn't notice on startup

  My machine has Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS running side-by-side on a single hard drive with GRUB bootloader, each with 500 GB storage. I keep my personal documents on a separate 1TB hard drive so they remain isolated from any changes I make to the OS drive, but when Ubuntu starts it does not seem to notice my documents drive. While I've installed and worked with Ubuntu 12.04 Server x32 before, using it as a desktop OS is new to me. I use my documents drive for all of my personal data, including wallpapers and music, so it is imperative that Ubuntu recognize it on startup. Concerning the two specific examples: Ubuntu loads with the default blue-colored desktop instead of my desired picture of the spectacular Carina galaxy. When I right-click the desktop and select "Change Desktop Background", it wakes up from its amnesia and loads the proper background. As for my music, Rhythmbox defaults to an empty library upon reboot, forcing me to reload the settings manually each time. This gets quite tedious because I certainly can't work to my full potential without my music. The second thing I would like to address is making Ubuntu point the documents directories in ~ to their appropriate counterparts on the 1TB documents drive. I realize that this question is not new, but when I create the symbolical links, they established themselves inside the directories and did not convert the directories themselves into symbolical links. I also prefer not to move the files themselves from their current location on the 1TB drive. I believe this would also help the Rhythmbox library problem as well considering it's a default directory for the music player. • How to make other semantics behave like SV_Position?

  I'm having a lot of trouble with shadow mapping, and I believe I've found the problem. When passing vectors from the vertex shader to the pixel shader, does the hardware automatically change any of the values based on the semantic? I've compiled a barebones pair of shaders which should illustrate the problem. • Storing revisions of a document

  This is a follow up question to my original question. I'm thinking of going with generating diffs and storing those diffs in the database 'History' table. I'm using diff-match-patch library to generate what is called a 'patch'. On every save, I compare previous and new version and generate this patch. The patch could be used to generate a document at specific point in time. My dilemma is how to store this data. Should I: a Insert a new database record for every patch? b. Store these patches in javascript array and store that array in history table. So there is only one db History record for document with an array of all the patches. Concerns with: a. Too many db records generated. Will be slow and CPU intensive to query. b. Only one record. If record is somehow corrupted/deleted. Entire revision history is gone. I'm looking for suggestions, concerns with either approach.

• Installing a new ASP.NET 4.0 site on a Windows 2008 server.

  I have been specifically requested to blog about getting an ASP.NET 4.0 site working on a Windows 2008 server that has never run a 4.0 web site before. Make sure the 4.0 framework is installed on the server! Patch it will ALL the security patches have been applied. ((for a live server, make sure that you tested the patches on your development server first) You will find the HTTP Log status codes at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943891 - they are very important in understandign the IIS logs) After installing, turn on 4.0, by doing the following: Start the Internet Information Services (IIS Manager) Select the server node in the connections pane. (this is the node above Application Pools, FTP Sites and Server Farms) Double click the ISAPI and CGI Restrictions item in the centre pane You should see 1 or 2 ASP.NET v4.0.30319 entries, select Enable in the Actions pane for all of them. ASP.NET 4.0 should now run! Remeber after creating your new 4.0 ASP.NET site. select the Sites node and find out the Id of it. By default, the IIS logs are at C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles and if your site is say 21, then the logs will be created in the W3SVC21 sub-directory. The key point about using these logs is that in the event of an error when trying to start the site for the first time, the log will contain the status code and the sub-code. By having the full code and sub-code, set up issues can be resolved in minutes instead of hours.

• Best alternatives to recover lost directories in FAT32 external hard drive?

  I have an 320 GB ADATA CH91 external hard drive. I guess it has some problems with the connector of the USB jack. The point is that in certain occasions it fails in write operations generating data losses. Right now I lost a directory with several GB's of very useful information. Since then I have not attempted to write to the disk any more. What tool would you recommend to recover the lost data? The disk is FAT32 formatted (only one partition) and I use both Linux and Windows. What filesystem format would you recommend to avoid future data losses? I currently only use this external hard drive in Linux so there are several available choices (FAT, NTFS, ext3, ext4, reiser, etc.).

• Running a home mail server using dynamic dns

  Hi, Is it possible to run an email server on my home box using dynamic dns? The scenario is, I want to auto cc all incoming and outgoing emails from my one account to another, from some server side config instead of configuring email clients for rules. I have tried Google Apps Mail but it doesn't allow auto cc of outgoing emails. After having read tons of blogs, forum messages etc (hope I have been reading the correct info :) ) the only option to achieve what I am needing is to setup my own mail server, but the cost of getting a static IP doesn't fit my budget. Please can someone point me in the correct direction. Platform doesn't matter, I can setup a Windows or Linux server. Many Thanks

• Generic Windows 98 USB Drive drivers?

  I've got an old Win98 machine that I'd like to pull some data off of. (Tens of gigs of data, actually.) The machine still runs fine, but due to the age, it doesn't have a cd burner, and the pre-NT networking won't connect to SMB shares without a fair amount of wrenching on the registry that I don't really want to do. What I really want to do is plug in an external USB hard drive and copy the files. But - Win98 didn't ship with generic USB drive drivers, and external drives don't ship with them these days. Can anyone point me at a reputable generic driver I can install?

• I'm trying to setup Xvfb to run an GUI app on a remote server with no display

  I have a 3rd party java app that I need to run on a remote server. Unfortunately, the app is designed for the desktop and assumes a GUI is available. The thing is I would like to leave this app running on the remote server without having to tie up my desktop machine with a persistent VNC connection to the remote machine. I'm trying to setup Xvfb on the remote machine so emulate a graphical environment, connect to the remote machine via VNC to launch the app and configure parameters and then log off and let it run. Here's what I have so far: I have ubuntu 11.04 server apt-get install xvfb apt-get install fluxbox apt-get install x11vnc Xvfb :1 -screen 0 1024x768x16 & fluxbox & At this point I run into a problem because it gives a very undescriptive error: Cannot connect to server. How do I know if the server is running and that it's running properly?

• Parallels: How to see a Mac-hosted website from Windows?

  I'm traveling at the moment, and have moved one of the websites I'm working on to my MBP so I can work on it without a network connection. I've made an addition to the Mac's /etc/hosts file pointing the domain name to 127.0.0.1, and all's well. I now want to get into Parallels and check the site from Windows browsers. How do I get things so that the Windows browser will understand the domain name and access the site? The Windows image obviously doesn't recognize / can't find the Mac's /etc/hosts file, and references to 127.0.0.1 in the Windows hosts file just as obviously point to Windows, not the Mac. Any advice out there? Thanks!

• Can I make a business in teaching home users Ubuntu [on hold]

  I was thinking about a way to bring Ubuntu to the bigger public, since it has great advantages for people in the lower income class that only use a PC for basic usage. They pay for a windows licence without actually needing windows because 95% of what they do is in a browser and the other 5% is typing a word document or making a simpel Excel sheet. So for these people something like Ubuntu is ideal, they can prolong the life of their old PC or laptop with Ubuntu and thus saving extra money. And as we all know, saving money is not only interesting for the lowest of income but for most of us. But when I talk to people they don't want to use Ubuntu because they know Windows and they don't know this, they'll complain about having to adapt to windows 8 but adapting to Ubuntu seems a bridge too far. But what if someone in the neighborhood gave simple Ubuntu courses. Teaching people about Ubuntu, stuff like: What is an OS What is Ubuntu How do I obtain Ubuntu How do I install Ubuntu How do I set up my email in Ubuntu How do I make a text document in Ubuntu How do I update my facebook wall in Ubuntu ... Simple basic PC usage, but within Ubuntu. But as much as I would like to work for free all day, I can't do this for free for people outside of my social circle. So I was wondering if it is possible to make a business and make money with giving Ubuntu courses, or are their steps to be taken before this is possible. However... Do I need an Ubuntu or Canonical license? Do I need to get a certificate? Do I have to make some kind of deal or contract with Canonical? Just to be clear this is all just an idea in my head at this point, I'm just gathering information. I'm not a teacher at a school, just a programmer that is thinking about options in life. • How to set individual NTFS partitions permissions behaviour for each user account?

  I have two NTFS partitions (DOWNLOADS for downloaded files and VM for my VirtualBox .vdi file) for which i must have full permissions for my allday use account. They should be also automounting when i login to this account. But i've also set Guest account for guests. For Guest account, i want make VM partition fully disabled and invisible (and thus it mustn't automount) but DOWNLOADS partition should be shared with limited privileges with Guest account. Editing fstab i'm able to share DOWNLOADS partition with Guest on limited privileges but VM can be only set to limited and have disabled automounting - so guest can't mount it but it still can be seen in Nautilus, plus I must always mount it manually when i login to allday account. Is there some trick to make what i want?   Lets say I have 3 URLs and they all point to the same reverse proxy. I would like to have the requests being forwarded to the web servers behind the proxy based on the host header: webfront1.example.com > reverseproxy.example.com > backend1.example.com webfront2.example.com > reverseproxy.example.com > backend2.example.com webfront3.example.com > reverseproxy.example.com > backend3.example.com Based on what I have read, I can configure reverseproxy.example.com/webfront1 > backend1.example.com, reverseproxy.example.com/webfront2 > backend2.example.com, etc. I am wondering if proxy based on host header is even possible or if I used the wrong approach entirely.

• How to manage SOAP requests to a pool of VM each listening on a HTTP port with a priority value in these requests?

  I have a front SOAP web-server under Linux. It will have to communicate with Windows Servers VM listening each on a HTTP port, for a HTTP POST request. The chosen VM should return a report of the task to the SOAP client. In the SOAP requests, there's a special variable : the priority of the request (kind of SLA), and my question is coming right now : I think of using a ha software (nginx, HAProxy, HeartBeat...) that can manage priority in this point of view. Is it relevant or do you think I need to implement a queue by myself with some specific developments? Ex: I have a SOAP requests with low priority in the pipe : the weight priority for these VM should be decreased if I have high priority SOAP requests at the same time. Any clue will be really appreciated.

• Seeing DNS changes takes too long on my PC, can it be my router misconfiguration?

  I administer a few sites and need to update their DNS entries from time to time, e.g., adding an A-record point certain subdomain to a certain IP. When I check sites like http://www.opendns.com/support/cache/, I can clearly see the DNS change taking effect throughout the world - is it just my PC that can't see this change (ping newsubdomain.example.org says it cannot resolve host name) The network "map" is like this: My PC -> my router -> my ISP's router -> internet On my PC, the DNS is set automatically which means that if I run iconfig /all, my router will be returned as the DNS server (192.168.1.1). On my router, the DNS is set to be what my ISP provided me with. Is this correct? What can I do to see new hostnames resolved quicker?

  I am currently running SQL server 2008 (SQLserverold) which homes databases for systemn center Service Manager 2012 Datawarehouse. This server is very old and needs to be decommisioned. Prior to decomissioning the serve, the databases have to be migrated to another clustered SQL server with two nodes(SQLServer1 and SQLserver2). I am not a DB admin no experience in SQL, and I have been given the task of migrating the Databases on the old server to the new custered environmnet. • Using the same local folder for Dropbox and Skydrive

  Ever since I switched to windows phone I've sorely missed having an official dropbox app. Recently I've toyed with the idea of moving all my crucial files to SkyDrive instead. I have more storage on SkyDrive and the WP SkyDrive integration is very handy. I'm thinking about having both cloud sync services point to the same local folder for the first few weeks. That way if I want to go back its an easy task (and I can keep using dropbox's superior public folder) Has anyone else done this? Are there any potential issues (permissions, conflicts etc)

• Can't boot after compiling 3.1 kernel, can only get to terminal

  Long story short: I tried compiling kernel 3.1 on Ubuntu 11.10 at the same time I had an update waiting for a reboot. Computer would boot to a black screen and would hang there. Ended up installing 11.10 on top of old install with a Live CD. Now I had a purple screen on bootup but it would end up booting. Realized Grub was the problem and tried some stuff but nothing worked. I ended up trying to install propriety ATI video drivers and since that nothing has worked, no grub menu(purple screen) and when it boots into the kernel it ends up hanging, I can sometimes get a terminal up with alt-fx. I have tried removing the ati drivers with the ati script, purging my fglrx driver, reconfiguring my xconf.org and following any tutorial I can find about fixing a broken graphics driver, but to no avail. I've gotten to a point were it seems that the ati propriety drivers are correctly loaded but it still has no grub boot menu and won't boot into Ubuntu. I've chased down my logs and this line is from kern.log: unity-greeter[3269]: segfault at 0 ip b7245cbbsp bf9d3900 error 4 in libgio-2.0.so.0.3000.0[b71ad000+142000] That line leads me to believe I don'T have the correct libgio-2 librairy on my system but have no idea how to find out what package has the correct version... My xorg.conf has no errors and seems to imply the fglrxdrm module got loaded correctly. Would be a bit complicated pasting the whole file here but if it would help I'll post it. LAstly, running fglrxinfo give me: Error: Unable yo open display (null) Any help or link to another tutorial would be appreciated. Thanks.

  A friend is flying to the US from Europe and asked me a very thought-provoking question, which I am not remotely able to answer with substance so I am asking it here: How to absolutely maximise battery life on an Ubuntu (laptop) install? do not rush to mark this as duplicate, there is an important point here: does -GNOME- help or worsen battery life? Let me provide some context: The only task he needs to perform is: edit text files in Vim. He is unsure whether running GNOME will drain his battery life more or actually save him some battery life given the smarts of GNOME's power management features like "switch this peripheral to -power save- after X minutes..." (GNOME might just be a configuration front-end for settings that are governed by command-line utils for all I know?) He could perfectly well boot the system in text-only mode and use the automatic 6 virtual consoles for his needs, if that's a saving at all over running tmux (I think so because of all the smart buffering/history/etc the latter does by default?) Exactly how would you advise him to run his laptop during his flight? (provide some technical arguments) __ I think it will be a saving but I am also scared about "other things" detecting and enabling advanced chipset power management features only when some services are started.. and fear these "services" may be off in text-only mode?

• Black spray (?) on a laptop's heat sink assembly

  We have a HP Pavilion DV3 4000SB that was given an error on startup that the fan was having problems (System Fan 90b error message) So I decided to open the laptop up and clean the fan, as that seemed the easiest option. Upon opening it up, at first I froze and thought "No wonder! The whole thing's burnt!", but then I started thinking it looked more like someone used a spraycan on it. I looked up a video on youtube of someone disassembling his Pavilion and noticed there wasn't any of the black on his, so my question here is: Have any of you encountered this, or know what it is? Or if it's something that could point to a problem?
