  I'm grabbing lines from a text file and sifting line by line using regular expressions. I'm trying to search for blank lines, meaning nothing or just whitespace. However, what exactly is empty space? I know that whitespace is \s but what is a line that is nothing at all? null (\0)? newline (\n)? I tried the test harness in the Java tutorial to try and test to see what an empty space is but no luck so far.

• Why isn't my favicon appearing in IE7/8?

It will not appear in IE 7/8 no matter what I do! I've tried everything I can think of, including: generating the ICO with a variety of different utilities, changing the syntax of the favicon link elements in the document head, using absolute, relative, and root-relative URLs in the favicon link elements, using a PNG instead of an ICO file, ensuring that I am uploading the file via FTP in binary mode, As a longtime web developer/programmer, I can't believe that this is tripping me up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I'm inside a cfloop over a query. I want to get an attribute, but I won't know what that attribute will be until runtime. Using #qryResult[MyAttr]# fails with the error "Complex object types cannot be converted to simple values." What is the syntax for doing this?   Hey Guys, I have the following html: HTML markup <ul id="test"> <li><a href="http://www.yahoo.com">yahoo</a></li> <li><a href="http://www.google.com">Google</a></li> </ul> And some JS code: JQuery/JavaScript Code $('ul#test').each(function() { var select=$(document.createElement('select')).insertBefore($(this).hide()); $('>li a', this).each(function() { option=$(document.createElement('option')).appendTo(select).val(this.href).html($(this).html()); }); }); This code produces a select dropdown menu, exactly what I want, but my question is how do I go to the url on select? So if I click yahoo, it brings me to yahoo.com? Thanks for your help!

• Javascript to add cdata section on the fly?

  I'm having trouble with special characters that exist in an xml node attribute. To combat this, I'm trying to render the attributes as child nodes and, where necessary, using cdata sections to get around the special characters. The problem is, I can't seem to get the cdata section appended to the node correctly. I'm iterating over the source xml node's attributes and creating new nodes. If the attribute.name = "description" I want to put the attribute.text() in a cdata section and append the new node. • ubuntu 12.04: Why my laptop is consuming more power than 11.10?

  I had 11.10 X86 on my Asus laptop (sandybridge, Nvidia 520M). I had 8 hours' battery life with Bumblebee and Jupiter. Average battery discharge rate was around 10w. Later I changed, not upgraded, to 12.04.1 AMD64. I installed Jupiter. But there is no "restricted drivers" available so I guess Bumblebee will not work. So I removed nvidia drivers. Now I only get 4 hours' battery life. Average battery discharge rate is around 19w. The removal of nvidia driver did not make any difference. What's the cause? Nvidia video card not disabled or 64b version of Ubuntu?

  As a gamer, one thing I have learned I need to be savvy about is knowing whether SomeBigGame is actually unstable or otherwise problematic as a piece of software (riddled with invasive DRM products, only runs well on a particular video driver version, crashes on non-English-language systems, etc.). I know that game news media can sometimes be relied upon to report on some problems, but I doubt they bother to cover smaller or indie titles. An example: I've started playing Transformice on Kongregate, and I'm considering installing the downloadable client (it is an online multiplayer game). The part of me that cares about data privacy and maintaining a clean-and-healthy PC wants to know whether there is a place I can check to find out more about a title-as-software than "it is not a literal virus." Put another way: where would you not want to see your game receive lots of attention?

• Ubuntu slows down even after cpu-intensive process is ended

  After a Skype video call, or the use of virtualbox, Ubuntu slows down to a crawl, even after the process is ended. Running htop reveals that processes that used little CPU before are now all using about 30% cpu (namely Compiz, Firefox, Python, and Skype, but I'm sure there are others), to the point where all my cores are at 99%. All I can do from here is restart. Any idea why this is happpening? I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit on 3.7 GiB of memory, Intel® Core™ i3 CPU M 330 @ 2.13GHz × 4, VESA: M92 graphics driver. Not sure why I'm running VESA, I installed fglrx, but I suppose that's a different question. Thanks in advance!

• Final Integration Testing for Q.A.

  A medium sized rails app that our company has been working on is getting close to the end of development and we are going to start doing Q.A. testing on it. We've have been writing unit, functional and integration tests all along and our test coverage is about 99% (even though that really doesn't mean anything). We feel like we have a pretty good test suite but I was wondering if we should be writing final integration tests for every little action we are going to do during our Q.A. process. If so, would using Shoulda or Cucumber be a good idea? We haven't used either of those testing tools yet, but they sound really great. Any ideas or thoughts would be really helpful. Thanks

• System update and now no wireless connection in Ubuntu 10.04

  I'm running an older version of Ubuntu (10.04), and updated yesterday through the update manager. The system informed me I needed to restart, so I did, then immediately shut down the system and went to work. When I rebooted later in the evening, I couldn't connect to my wireless router. I could find my connection and had the passcode and all that usual business, but could this be a kernel or driver issue caused by the update? If so, how can I fix it? I've attempted to go through the troubleshooter, but to no avail. Additionally, I put off upgrading to the next stage of Ubuntu for so long that I can no longer prompt the system to ask me if I'd like to. Any way to change this?

  Using http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer So I tried installing Ubuntu for the first time today, and it installed all well, but then it froze at the 'Preparing to run Ubuntu for the first time...' screen. I then proceeded to restart my computer and load Ubuntu from the OS selection screen. My screen completely froze and the picture didn't even come up fully as if my video driver was not installed correctly. Are there any fixes to this problem? Would greatly appreciate it. • Using generics in dotnet for functions with any number of arguments?

  I would like to have a function that can "wrap" any other function call. In this particular case, it would allow me to write some more generic transaction handling around some specific operations. I can write this for any particular number of arguments, e.g. for one argument: Public Shared Sub WrapFunc(Of T)(ByVal f As Action(Of T), ByVal arg As T) ' Test some stuff, start transaction f(arg) ' Test some stuff, end transaction End Sub ... but I was hoping to have this handle any number of arguments without having to have duplicate code for 0 args, 1 arg, 2 args, etc. Is there a way of doing this?

• Screen sometimes inverts after locking

  Sometimes, when I wake up my computer from a screen lock, one of my screens is inverted. It does not always happen (maybe one in ten times) and it is not always the same screen. Re-locking and unlocking the screen a couple of times fixes the colors again. I have a dual monitor setup on an ATI Radeon HD 3450, using two HP screens connected over DVI. I am using the radeon driver, and according to jockey there are no additional drivers available for my system. Any ideas as to why this happens?

  I'd like to use FactoryBeans and scopes together. Specifically, I'd like the object created and returned by a FactoryBean to be placed into a specified (perhaps custom) scope. The issue is that doing the following: <bean class="x.y.z.TestFactoryBean" scope="test" /> Results in the FactoryBean itself being scoped, and has somewhat unpredictable behaviour on the object created by the factory. I understand why this is; the factory itself is a first-class spring-managed bean, and has its own lifecycle. However, I can't find a way to specify that the object returned from the factory should itself be scoped. On the other hand, this does exactly what I want (as long as TestFactoryBean does NOT implement the FactoryBean interface): <bean class="x.y.z.TestFactoryBean" name="testFactory"> <bean class="x.y.z.TestBean" factory-bean="testFactory" factory-method="getObject" scope="test" /> So the real question is, how can I make Spring behave like it does for the 2nd example above, but using real FactoryBeans?

  My Google-fu has failed me. In Python, are these: n = 5 # Test one. if n == 5: print 'Yay!' # Test two. if n is 5: print 'Yay!' two tests for equality equivalent (ha!)? Does this hold true for objects where you would be comparing instances (a list say)? Okay, so this kind of answers my question: l = list() l.append(1) if l == [1]: print 'Yay!' # Holds true, but... if l is [1]: print 'Yay!' # Doesn't.
