• How to wrap console utils in webserver

  I have a big dataset (100Mbs/day) and a bunch of console a TCL/TK tools to view it - I want to turn it into a web app that I can build, and others can maintain. In long: my group runs simulations yielding 100s of Mbs of data daily, in multiple (mostly but not only) text forms. We have a bunch of scripts and tools, mostly old school 1990's style stuff requiring a 5-button mouse, as well as lots of ad-hoc scripts that engineers build out of frustration every month or so. These produces UIs, graphs, spreadsheets (various sizes), logs, event histories etc. I want to replace (or at least supplement) the xwindows / console style UI with a web-based one, so I need the following properties: pleasant to program can wrap existing command-line tools in separate views (I don't need to scrape GUIs or anything) as I port logic from the existing scripts I can create a modularised and pleasant codebase to replace it I can attach a web-ui to navigate between views - each view is likely to contain keys which might make sense to view in another I am new to building systems that have logic on the back-end and front-end of a web-server. from that point of view, they do this: backend wraps old-school executables, constructs calls into them and them takes the output and wraps it up, niceifies it and delivers it to the web client. For instance the tool might generate a number of indexed images (per invocation) which I might deliver all at once or on-demand. May (probably) need to to heavy stats on some sources. frontend provides navigation connecting multiple views, performs requests from one view for data from another (or self to self), etc. Probably will have some views with a lot of interactivity. Can people please point me towards viable solutions for this? I know it's a bit of an open question so as answers come in I hope to refine the spec until we have a good match. I guess I expect to see answers like "RoR!" "beans!" "Scala!" but please give an indication of why those are a good fit; I know nothing! I got bumped off SO for asking an open-ended question, so sorry if its OT here too (let me know). I take the policy that I use the best/closest matched language for a project but most of my team are extremely low level (ie pipeline stages and CDyn) so I don't have the peer group to know where to start.

  I'm dealing with a modeling system (financial) that has dozens of variables. Some of the variables are independent, and function as inputs to the system; most of them are calculated from other variables (independent and calculated) in the system. What I'm looking for is a clean, elegant way to: define the function of each dependent variable in the system trigger a re-calculation, whenever a variable changes, of the variables that depend on it A naive way to do this would be to write a single class that implements INotifyPropertyChanged, and uses a massive case statement that lists out all the variable names x1, x2, ... xn on which others depend, and, whenever a variable xi changes, triggers a recalculation of each of that variable's dependencies. I feel that this naive approach is flawed, and that there must be a cleaner way. I started down the path of defining a CalculationManager<TModel> class, which would be used (in a simple example) something like as follows: public class Model : INotifyPropertyChanged { private CalculationManager<Model> _calculationManager = new CalculationManager<Model>(); // each setter triggers a "PropertyChanged" event public double? I still feel that I'm missing something major here, and that this isn't the right approach: the (mis)use of INotifyPropertyChanged seems to me like a code smell the withInputs parameter is defined as params Expression<Func<TModel, T>>[] args, which means that the argument list of usingCalculation is not checked at compile time the argument list (weight, height) is redundantly defined in both usingCalculation and withInputs I am sure that this kind of system of dependent variables must be common in computational mathematics, physics, finance, and other fields. Does someone know of an established set of ideas that deal with what I'm grasping at here? Would this be a suitable application for a functional language like F#? Edit More context: The model currently exists in an Excel spreadsheet, and is being migrated to a C# application. It is run on-demand, and the variables can be modified by the user from the application's UI. Its purpose is to retrieve variables that the business is interested in, given current inputs from the markets, and model parameters set by the business.

• Best way to remote restart Ubuntu from Windows machine

  Background: I'm looking to put a series of Ubuntu machines into retail locations, they're being used as dumb kiosks to show a series of slides onto large LCD panel TV screens. Once installed, they won't have a keyboard or mouse connected but will have a fixed IP on the local network. Everything is configured to auto-start, no automatic updates, no power saving etc - I think we're pretty-much good to go apart from one thing. I need the retail staff to be able to restart the boxes if a problem arises. We have VNC running (now that we've turned off desktop enhancements!) so that we can remotely get into the machines if we need to, but that's not something we would allow the retail staff to do. The machines are going to be physically 'out of the way' (probably in the ceiling space) so the power button is not easily accessible!. I'd like to have some means of allowing the retail staff to restart the Ubuntu machine, from the desktop of one of their Windows terminals. I don't really want to give them some kind of raw terminal access (the command line will frighten them!) and I don't want them to use VNC (as stated above). Ideally there would be an icon on the Windows desktop, they double-click it, reply to a simple 'are you sure?' prompt, and then the Ubuntu box is told to restart. The Windows side of that won't be a problem, we can write something using Delphi, Python & Qt4, whatever - it's the Ubuntu side of it I'm stuck with. Out of sight/view, could I have a Windows program open a terminal across the network and tell Ubuntu to restart? Is this what SSH could be used for (I have never set that kind of thing up). The Windows programming side isn't really an issue, it's just that I'm a total Ubuntu noob and don't know where to start from the platform point of view. The other thing we considered is also having the machine automatically restart itself at a set time each day (obviously out of store hours!). To me, that seems a bit unnecessary (though forcing a restart once a week/month might be worthwhile). Any thoughts or suggestions? Being able to restart the box on demand across the network is my prime requirement.

  Hello all, Does anyone here have a practical advice on professional relocation from Russia to Europe? The reasons behind making such a decision are far beyond the subject, perhaps, so I'll stick to the practical part. Having done some of the "common stuff" for finding a job, I am now facing two serious problems: I am a "dual-class" person, with university degree in marketing, and multiple years of self-studied computer competence (hence my writing here). Have professional experience in both areas. I don't currently hold a European work permit. From what I can see, this results in normal HR person throwing out my CV as either being "overqualified" or "too much trouble with making the permit". I do have the skills and character to start my own business, but it requires start-up capital that I don't have, over the last years I had to pay high bills for medical treatment of my family member, who had deceased. Now, I'm almost out of debts. As you can probably guess, English is not a problem, and I'm open to new languages, but first steps of entering the market, or the society, is the problematic part. I live close to Norway, and am trying to get some professional contacts there, but it hasn't got me any practical perspective so far. Any advice is greatly appreciated. EDIT: I am currently making my living off web site development, and occasional consulting services both in IT and marketing. For purely geographic reasons I'm dealing with clients that reside in the same city where I live, pop. 350 000. Being quite local, market requirements for web sites are simple and stable — clients need to control navigation, write articles in a word-like editor, upload illustrations and place ad banners, all with no additional programming. As many web developers do, I'm using my own content management system that fits these expectations. I have also started developing a newer version of this system that has better support for international environments, but I'm too distant from the real market demand in Europe to speak of the right track here. Technically it's based on php/mysql and uses xslt for templating. It allows for quick website deployment, and has architectural neatness, lack of which made me abandon similar opensource solutions (Joomla and the like). Deploying time from rasterized design proofs is normally under 6-8 working hours, don't know how that compares to the world practice. EDIT 2: Can anyone share what Norwegian (Scandinavian) web solutions market currently demands?

  I've been reading some papers from the early 90s about a US Department of Defense software reuse initiative called the Defense Software Reuse System (DSRS). The most recent mention of it I could find was in a paper from 2000 - A Survey of Software Reuse Repositories Defense Software Repository System (DSRS) The DSRS is an automated repository for storing and retrieving Reusable Software Assets (RSAs) [14]. The DSRS software now manages inventories of reusable assets at seven software reuse support centers (SRSCs). The DSRS serves as a central collection point for quality RSAs, and facilitates software reuse by offering developers the opportunity to match their requirements with existing software products. DSRS accounts are available for Government employees and contractor personnel currently supporting Government projects... ...The DoD software community is trying to change its software engineering model from its current software cycle to a process-driven, domain-specific, architecture-based, repository-assisted way of constructing software [15]. In this changing environment, the DSRS has the highest potential to become the DoD standard reuse repository because it is the only existing deployed, operational repository with multiple interoperable locations across DoD. Seven DSRS locations support nearly 1,000 users and list nearly 9,000 reusable assets. The DISA DSRS alone lists 3,880 reusable assets and has 400 user accounts... The far-term strategy of the DSRS is to support a virtual repository. These interconnected repositories will provide the ability to locate and share reusable components across domains and among the services. An effective and evolving DSRS is a central requirement to the success of the DoD software reuse initiative.   If you have been living under a rock for the past year, you wouldn't have heard about cloud computing. Cloud computing is a loose term that describes anything that is hosted in data centers and accessed via the internet. It is normally associated with developers who draw clouds in diagrams indicating where services or how systems communicate with each other. Cloud computing also incorporates such well-known trends as Web 2.0 and Software as a Service (SaaS) and more recently Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS). Its aim is to change the way we compute, moving from traditional desktop and on-premises servers to services and resources that are hosted in the cloud.  Benefits of Cloud Computing  There are clearly benefits in building applications using cloud computing, some of which are listed here:  Zero up- front investment:  Delivering a large-scale system costs a fortune in both time and money. Often IT departments are split into hardware/network and software services. The hardware team provisions servers and so forth under the requirements of the software team. Often the hardware team has a different budget that requires approval. Although hardware and software management are two separate disciplines, sometimes what happens is developers are given the task to estimate CPU cycles, disk space, and so forth, which ends up in underutilized servers.  Usage-based costing:  You pay for what you use, no more, no less, because you never actually own the server. This is similar to car leasing, where in the long run you get a new car every three years and maintenance is never a worry.  Potential for shrinking the processing time:  If processes are split over multiple machines, parallel processing is performed, which decreases processing time.  More office space:  Walk into most offices, and guaranteed you will find a medium- sized room dedicated to servers.  Efficient resource utilization:  The resource utilization is handed by a centralized cloud administrator who is in charge of deciding exactly the right amount of resources for a system. This takes the task away from local administrators, who have to regularly monitor these servers.  Just-in-time infrastructure:  If your system is a success and needs to scale to meet demand, this can cause further time delays or a slow- performing service. Cloud computing solves this because you can add more resources at any time.  Lower environmental impact:  If servers are centralized, potentially an environment initiative is more likely to succeed. As an example, if servers are placed in sunny or windy parts of the world, then why not use these resources to power those servers?  Lower costs:  Unfortunately, this is one point that administrators will not like. If you have people administrating your e-mail server and network along with support staff doing other cloud-based tasks, this workforce can be reduced. This saves costs, though it also reduces jobs.

  One of the New User Interface Platforms in SharePoint 2010 is ‘The Dialog Platform’ A dialog is essentially a <div> which gets visible on demand and renders the HTML using a background overlay creating a modal dialog like user experience. We can show an existing div from within the page or a different page using a URL inside the dialogs. When we pass the URL to the dialog it looks for the Querystring parameter “IsDlg=1”. If this parameters exists than it would dynamically load the "/_layouts/styles/dlgframe.css” file. • Help with DB Structure, vOD site

  I have a video on demand style site that hosts series of videos under different modules. However with the way I have designed the database it is proving to be very slow. I have asked this question before and someone suggested indexing, but i cannot seem to get my head around it. But I would like someone to help with the structure of the database here to see if it can be improved. The core table is Videos: ID bigint(20) (primary key, auto-increment) pID text airdate text title text subject mediumtext url mediumtext mID int(11) vID int(11) sID int(11) pID is a unique 5 digit string to each video that is a shorthand identifier. Airdate is the TS, (stored in text format, right there maybe I should change that to TIMESTAMP AUTO UPDATE), title is self explanatory, subject is self explanatory, url is the hard link on the site to the video, mID is joined to another table for the module title, vID is joined to another table for the language of the video, (english, russian, etc) and sID is the summary for the module, a paragraph stored in an external database. The slowest part of the website is the logging part of it. I store the data in another table called 'Hits': id mediumint(10) (primary key, auto-increment) progID text ts int(10) Again, here (this was all made a while ago) but my Timestamp (ts) is an INT instead of ON UPDATE CURRENT TIMESTAMP, which I guess it should be. However This table is now 47,492 rows long and the script that I wrote to process it is very very slow, so slow in fact that it times out. A row is added to this table each time a user clicks 'Play' on the website and then so the progID is the same as the pID, and it logs the php time() timestamp in ts. Basically I load the entire database of 'Hits' into an array and count the hits in each day using the TS column. I am guessing (i'm quite slow at all this, but I had no idea this would happen when I built the thing) that this is possibly the worst way to go about this. So my questions are as follows: Is there a better way of structuring the 'Videos' table, is so, what do you suggest? Is there a better way of structuring 'hits', if so, please help/tell me! Or is it the fact that my tables are fine and the PHP coding is crappy?

• Managing scalability and availability with two servers running Apache Httpd, Apache Mina and MySQL

  Hello, I am not a developer and I don't much experience with scalable server architectures. But I am in need of a highly available and scalable system for one of my projects. There is going to be two servers I am going to use for the time being. Both with 4 core CPUs and 8 GB RAM with RAID structures running CentOS 5.4. I will also have feature called "Failover IP" which enables to direct an IP address to another server within short time. The applications which will be run on the servers: There is going to be a Java application based on Apache Mina server for handling TCP requests from some hundreds of network devices where the devices are going to send request as much as one request per minute. Handling those requests, includes parsing the requests and inserting a few rows to the Database. Parsing requests before inserting data to the DB does take neglectable time. There is going to be MySQL server, as I stated above. Also there is going to be a PHP web application running on Apache Httpd Server which uses the same DB with the Java application. What I wish to have is to make use of those two servers at the most. I was imagining to have the servers identical, sharing the work load. MySQL could be a cluster maybe? And if some application fails or the whole machine goes down, the other will continue serving the requests seamlessly. Reminding that a "Failover IP" feature will be available for me to take advantage of. Also, It should be kept in mind that number of servers could increase in time, to meet the demand. What can you suggest? Which kind of tools I can make use of? Which kind of monitoring software (paid/unpaid) I have? Thanks in advance.

Use of user interfaces that have been developed to manage this data: BizTalk Cross Referencing Tool XRef XML Creation Tool However, there are the following issues with the above options: The 'BizTalk Cross Referencing Tool' requires a separate database to manage.  The 'XRef XML Creation' tool has no means of persisting the data settings. The 'BizTalk Cross Referencing tool' generates integers in the common id field. I prefer to use a string (e.g. acme.country.uk). This is more readable. (see naming conventions below). Both UI tools continue to use BTSXRefImport.exe.  This utility replaces all xref data. This can be a problem in continuous integration environments that support multiple clients or BizTalk target instances.  If you upload the data for one client it would destroy the data for another client.  Yet in TFS where builds run concurrently, this would break unit tests. Alternative Approach In response to these issues, I instead use simple SQL scripts to directly populate the BizTalkMgmtDb xref tables combined with a data namepacing strategy to isolate client data. Naming Conventions All data keys use namespace prefixing.  The pattern will be <companyName>.<data Type>.  The naming conventions will be to use lower casing for all items.  The data must follow this pattern to isolate it from other company cross-reference data.  The table below shows some sample data. (Note: this data uses the 'ID' cross-reference tables.  the same principles apply for the 'value' cross-referencing tables). Table.Field Description Sample Data xref_AppType.appType Application Types acme.erp acme.portal acme.assetmanagement xref_AppInstance.appInstance Application Instances (each will have a corresponding application type). acme.dynamics.ax acme.dynamics.crm acme.sharepoint acme.maximo xref_IDXRef.idXRef Holds the cross reference data types. acme.taxcode acme.country xref_IDXRefData.CommonID Holds each cross reference type value used by the canonical schemas. acme.vatcode.exmpt acme.vatcode.std acme.country.usa acme.country.uk xref_IDXRefData.AppID This holds the value for each application instance and each xref type. • Why am I getting a warning that windows is logging on with a temporary profile to run a task scheduler task?

  I am having a strange problem with the Windows Server 2008 Task Scheduler. I have to run a small command-line application every few minutes. This application just executes a quick web service call on the localhost and adds an entry to a log file; so it should not need anything special in terms of permissions. First, I created a new user account "my_scheduler" just for the task. This account is a member of the Users group (not sure what other settings I should turn on/off) and set it's password to not expire. I then create a task to run the application every few minutes. I set it to "Run whether user is logged on or not" and turned on "Do not store password. The task will only have access to local resources" (I did this since it's not hitting anything on the network. I did not turn on "Run with highest privileges" since it does not seem to need them. I set the schedule to "After triggered, repeat every 30 minutes for a duration of 1 day" and "Allow task to be run on demand" (no other settings enabled). However, I notice that in the Event Log, I see a bunch of these warnings whenever the task is run: "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off." Even though I get the warning, the task is executing (I see the log entries appearing). Another (possibly related) issue is that I also see that it's starting multiple copies of the task (within a few seconds of each other) even though it should only start one. This is also a big problem. Any idea how I can fix this? Thanks in advance, Dan

• SQL Server – SafePeak “Logon Trigger” Feature for Managing Data Access

  Lately I received an interesting question about the abilities of SafePeak for SQL Server acceleration software: Q: “I would like to use SafePeak to make my CRM application faster. It is an application we bought from some vendor, after a while it became slow and we can’t reprogram it. SafePeak automated caching sounds like an easy and good solution for us. But, in my application there are many servers and different other applications services that address its main database, and some even change data, and I feel that there is a chance that some servers that during the connection process we may miss some. Is there a way to ensure that SafePeak will be aware of all connections to the SQL Server, so its cache will remain intact?” Interesting question, as I remember that SafePeak (http://www.safepeak.com/Product/SafePeak-Overview) likes that all traffic to the database will go thru it. I decided to check out the features of SafePeak latest version (2.1) and seek for an answer there. A: Indeed I found SafePeak has a feature they call “Logon Trigger” and is designed for that purpose. It is located in the user interface, under: Settings -> SQL instances management  ->  [your instance]  ->  [Logon Trigger] tab. From here you activate / deactivate it and control a white-list of enabled server IPs and Login names that SafePeak will ignore them. Click to Enlarge After activation of the “logon trigger” Safepeak server is notified by the SQL Server itself on each new opened connection. Safepeak monitors those connections and decides if there is something to do with them or not. On a typical installation SafePeak likes all application and users connections to go via SafePeak – this way it knows about data and schema updates immediately (real time). With activation of the safepeak “logon trigger”  a special CLR trigger is deployed on the SQL server and notifies Safepeak on any connection that has not arrived via SafePeak. In such cases Safepeak can act to clear and lock the cache or to ignore it. This feature enables to make sure SafePeak will be aware of all connections so SafePeak cache will maintain exactly correct all times. So even if a user, like a DBA will connect to the SQL Server not via SafePeak, SafePeak will know about it and take actions. The notification does not impact the work of that connection, the user or application still continue to do whatever they planned to do. Note: I found that activation of logon trigger in SafePeak requires that SafePeak SQL login will have the next permissions: 1) CONTROL SERVER; 2) VIEW SERVER STATE; 3) And the SQL Server instance is CLR enabled; Seeing SafePeak in action, I can say SafePeak brings fantastic resource for those who seek to get performance for SQL Server critical apps. SafePeak promises to accelerate SQL Server applications in just several hours of installation, automatic learning and some optimization configuration (no code changes!!!). • How to configure Hyper-V failover cluster to live migrate when dynamic memory runs out?

  Appologies in advance that this is not a direct programming question, but I have a feeling that the solution involves custom powershell scripts (maybe), so this is as good a place to ask as any. I maintain a website that has a large Hyper-V cluster for SQL Servers. We are using Windows 2008 R2 SP1, and the new "dynamic memory" feature. I've already ready reviewed the Best Practices Guide, and implemented it's suggested configuration. Everything works well, except that when SQL demand increases memory pressure to expand to more memory than is available on the physical machine, the memory status goes into the "Warning" state and stays there. I assume the hypervisor is using a swapfile on the host to fulfill the memory requirement, thus slowing the virtual machine down. When this happens, there are plenty of other nodes in the cluster that have available resources. I can live-migrate the virtual server over there and everything works, and the warnings go away. Now how can I automate this? I see no menu options in either Hyper-V or the Failover Cluster Manager for performing a migration or shutdown when dynamic memory goes into the warning state. Any ideas about how to script this, or monitor it and invoke the action directly, would be helpful. If the solution involves coding, powershell would be ideal, but I could envison this as a .Net Service that monitors for this state and kicks off the migration request. I just don't know what objects are involved in doing the monitoring or kicking off the live migration. Thanks in advance.

• How can a Linux Administrator improve their shell scripting and automation skills?

  In my organization, I work with a group of NOC staff, budding junior engineers and a handful of senior engineers; all with a focus on Linux. One interesting step in the way the company grows talent is that there's a path from the NOC to the senior engineering ranks. Viewing the talent pool as a relative newcomer, I see that there's a split in the skill sets that tends to grow over time... There are engineers who know one or several particular technologies well and are constantly immersed... e.g. MySQL, firewalls, SAN storage, load balancers... There are others who are generalists and can navigate multiple technologies. All learn enough Linux (commands, processes) to do what they need and use on a daily basis. A differentiating factor between some of the staff is how well they embrace scripting, automation and configuration management methodologies. For instance, we have two engineers who do the bulk of Amazon AWS CloudFormation work, and another who handles most of the Puppet infrastructure. Perhaps a quarter of the engineers are adept at BASH shell scripting. Looking at this in the context of the incredibly high demand for DevOps skills in the job market, I'm curious how other organizations foster the development of these skills and grow their internal talent. Scripting doesn't seem like a particularly-teachable concept. How does a sysadmin improve their shell scripting? Is there still a place for engineers who do not/cannot keep up in the DevOps paradigm? Are we simply to assume that some people will be left behind as these technologies evolve? Is that okay?

• Launch synergy client on boot in Mac OS X

  I have a mac as a secondary machine at work. Currently I use synergy on my main machine to share its keyboard and mouse with the mac. I created a launch agent for my user to launch synergy when I log in, and that's working. However, this means I still have to pull out the mac's keyboard and mouse in order to log in. I tried making a user daemon so that it would launch on boot, but I get the following errors in the console: LaunchSynergy[52] Tue Jul 14 12:41:44 testmacpro.local synergyc[52] <Warning>: 3891612: (CGSLookupServerRootPort) Untrusted apps are not allowed to connect to or launch Window Server before login. Is there a way to get this to work? Looks like the Mac's security doesn't want to allow anything to take control of the window while at the login screen. I can understand that, but I'd like a way to override it, as it would make my life a lot easier.

• PHP output buffer settings ignored by server

  I have been trying to flush the output of certain scripts to the browser on demand, but they do not work on our production server. For instance, I tried running the "Phoca Changing Collation tool" (find it on Google) and I don't see any output until the script finishes executing. I've tried immediately flushing the buffer on other scripts that work fine on any server but this one using the following code: echo "something"; ob_flush(); flush(); Setting "ob_implicit_flush(1);" doesn't help either. The server is Apache 2.2.21 with PHP 5.2.17 running on Linux. You can see our php.ini file here if that will help: http://www.smallfiles.org/download/1123/php.ini.html This isn't the only problem we are having with the server ignoring in-script directives. The server also ignores timeout coding such as: ini_set('max_execution_time', 900*60); AND set_time_limit(86400); Script always times out at the php.ini default. Doesn't seem to matter if script is executed in IE or Firefox. Tried "ini_set('zlib.output_compression_level', 'Off');" and checked that it is "Off" in the php.ini file. The code "apache_setenv('no-gzip', 1);" causes a fatal error so tried uploading a .htaccess file with the "mod_gzip_on No" directive. Neither helps. Tried running Apache as fcgi and suphp, but same results. Server is NOT in safe mode. Pullin ma hair out!

• Windows 7 UAC (user access control) is being disabled on every reboot

  To put it simply, I noticed UAC was disabled so I enabled it. I was prompted to reboot the computer for the changes to take effect. Upon my reboot I checked the settings again as I hadn't disabled UAC in the first place. It was again set to off (never notify). For the heck of it I repeated the process a couple of more times. Same result each time. I have Microsoft Security Essentials running a full scan nightly so I should be protected from viruses. I also did an on demand scan with the online tool at www.antivirus.com. Nothing was found. Other than the fact that UAC is being disabled on each reboot I have no other reason to suspect a virus. So my question is does anyone have insight into if this is a possible problem with a virus or other malware changing my UAC settings on each boot or is it possibly a problem with Windows and UAC itself? If it is malware are there suggestions for other products outside of the ones I have used to detect and remove it.

• What folders to encrypt with EFS on Windows 7 laptop?

  Since I've been using my laptop more as a laptop recently (carrying it around) I am now evaluating my strategy to protect confidential information in case it is stolen. Keep in mind that my laptop is 6 years old (Lenovo T61 with 8 GB or RAM, 2GHz dual core CPU). It runs Windows 7 fine but it is no speedy demon. It doesn't support AES instruction set. I've been using TrueCrypt volume mounted on demand for really important stuff like financial statements forever. Nothing else is encrypted. I just finished my evaluation of EFS, Bitlocker and took a closer look at TrueCrypt again. I've come to conclusion that boot partition encryption via Bitlocker or TrueCrypt is not worth the hassle. I may decide in the future to use Bitlocker or TrueCrypt to encrypt one of the data volumes but at this point I intend to use EFS to encrypt parts of my hard drive that contain data that I wouldn't want exposed. The purpose of this post is to get your feedback about what folders should be encrypted from the general point of view (of course everyone will have something specific in addition) Here is what I thought of so far (will update if I think of something else): 1) AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook - Outlook files 2) AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles and AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles- Thunderbird profiles, not sure yet where exactly data is stored. 3) AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\djdsakdjh.default\bookmarkbackups - Firefox bookmark backup. Is there a separate location for "main" Firefox bookmark file? I haven't figured it out yet. 4) Bookmarks for Chrome (don't know where it's bookmarks are) and Internet Explorer ($Username\Favorites) - I don't really use them but why not to secure that as well. 5) Downloads\, My Documents\ and My Pictures\ folders I don't think I need to encrypt, say, latest service pack for Visual Studio. So I will probably create subfolder called "Secure" in all of these folders and set it to "Encrypted". Anything sensitive I will save in this folder. Any other suggestions? Again, this is from the point of view of your "regular office user".

I saw few: i) HP ProBook 4321s ii) HP ProBook 6440b iii)Dell Latitude E6410 i found these laptops are still very new..is it? not much comments about them. can anyone help? i doubt how their graphic cards perform compare to each other? ProBook 4321s- Radeon HD4350 ProBook 6440b- Radeon HD4550 Latitude E6410- NVS 3100M most of the time i'll running 3D CAD software, C++ programing...i saw my friend's laptop with radeon HD4350. it's perfectly fulfilling my demand. but i wonder how the other two are? Another thing i doubt is the screen resolution..my current laptop is 1280x800, and i found it comfortable to use. But these two HP only offer 1366x768..will it make any large different? Lastly, is there anyway to estimate how their power consumption is from the spec sheet? well, i would prefer one with longer battery usage time. my current laptop is suck...only last 1 hour even when it's still new..i'm not going to get another like this anymore. • Cron won't use msmtp to send emails in case of failed cronjob

  I'm trying to configure a machine so that it will send me an email if one of the cronjobs output something in case of an error. I'm using Debian Wheezy. Cron is working normally (without the email functionality). msmtp is installed and configured. Have already symlinked /usr/{bin|sbin}/sendmail to /usr/bin/msmtp. I can send email by using: echo "test" | mail -s "subject" [email protected] or by executing: echo "test" | /usr/sbin/sendmail Without the symlink (/usr/sbin/sendmail) cron will tell me that: (CRON) info (No MTA installed, discarding output) With the symlinks I get: (root) MAIL (mailed 1 byte of output; but got status 0x004e, #012) Can you suggest how to config the cron/msmtp pair? Thanks! EDIT: Note: I've written "msmtpd" by mistake. Its not a daemon but rather an SMTP client named just "msmtp" (without the "d" ending). It is executed on demand and it is not running in the background all the time. • Edit-text-files-over-SSH using a local text editor

  I am working in various Linux and UNIX environments. I'd like to elegantly solve the problem of editing remote configuration files over SSH. Instead of using terminal editors (nano), I'd like to open the file in a local text editor on my desktop (Sublime Text 2). CyberDuck, WinSCP and various other SFTP apps can do this. Using editors over X11 forwarding has also proven to be problematic. Also using archaic text editors like Vim or Emacs do not serve my needs well. They could do this, but I prefer using other text editing software. Using ssh mounts (FUSE) are also problematic unless they can happen on the demand and triggered by the remote site. So what I hope to achieve Have a somekind of easily deployable shell script etc. which I can copy to remote server (let's call it mooedit) I run mooedit command on the remote server of which I have connected over SSH connection mooedit sends some kind of signal (over SSH( to my local desktop On my local desktop this signal is captured and it determines 'a ha! moo wants to edit a file on server X in folder Y' File is SFTP transfered to the local desktop (/tmp) File is opened in a nice GUI text editor on the local desktop When Save is pressed, the local desktop notices changes in the file and SFTP sends the resulting file back to the server The question is: What signaling mechanisms SSH provides for this? Any other methods to trigger a local text editor for remote SSH file?

• Authenticating your windows domain users in the cloud

  Moving to the cloud can represent a big challenge for many organizations when it comes to reusing existing infrastructure. For applications that drive existing business processes in the organization, reusing IT assets like active directory represent good part of that challenge. For example, a new web mobile application that sales representatives can use for interacting with an existing CRM system in the organization. In the case of Windows Azure, the Access Control Service (ACS) already provides some integration with ADFS through WS-Federation. That means any organization can create a new trust relationship between the STS running in the ACS and the STS running in ADFS. As the following image illustrates, the ADFS running in the organization should be somehow exposed out of network boundaries to talk to the ACS. This is usually accomplish through an ADFS proxy running in a DMZ. This is the official story for authenticating existing domain users with the ACS.  Getting an ADFS up and running in the organization, which talks to a proxy and also trust the ACS could represent a painful experience. It basically requires  advance knowledge of ADSF and exhaustive testing to get everything right.  However, if you want to get an infrastructure ready for authenticating your domain users in the cloud in a matter of minutes, you will probably want to take a look at the sample I wrote for talking to an existing Active Directory using a regular WCF service through the Service Bus Relay Binding. You can use the WCF ability for self hosting the authentication service within a any program running in the domain (a Windows service typically). The service will not require opening any port as it is opening an outbound connection to the cloud through the Relay Service. In addition, the service will be protected from being invoked by any unauthorized party with the ACS, which will act as a firewall between any client and the service. In that way, we can get a very safe solution up and running almost immediately. To make the solution even more convenient, I implemented an STS in the cloud that internally invokes the service running on premises for authenticating the users. Any existing web application in the cloud can just establish a trust relationship with this STS, and authenticate the users via WS-Federation passive profile with regular http calls, which makes this very attractive for web mobile for example. The UserAuthenticator implementation is just a wrapper around the LogonUser Win Api. • Software way to cool down an old MacBook Pro

  Hi all, First a little background: I've got lots of computers, including Linux PCs and two MacBook Pro (and a MacMini). My concern is with my 'old' MacBookPro (Core Duo). It really does overheat. Warranty is long void. Years ago (I'd say 2.5 years ago or so) one day it overheated so bad that the battery inflated due to the heat. I got a new battery for free but it's still getting incredibly hot (much other than any other computer I've got: my newer Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro doesn't get nearly as hot as the old one. It s really a pain because I use my old MBP when I m in front of TV, having it on my lap, and it can really become unbearable. I don't want to open that old MBP. On Linux I can force a new CPU 'governor' that decides how the CPU is allowed to operate: it can be 'on demand', 'always max speed', 'always speed x', etc. Does the same exist under MacOS X? Is there a way, say if a 1.86 Ghz Core Duo can run at 1.6 Ghz, to ask MacOS X: "never run this CPU above 1.6 Ghz" ?

• Wake OSX 10.8 over WiFi (WoWL - Wake on WiFi Lan)

  I have a stack of Apple Mac minis running SSH servers for remote login. The problem is that I can't seem to get them to wake up. From what I gathered, as of Mac OSX 10.7 you required to have a boot time option set - darkwake=0 10.7 and darkwake=no 10.8. So I tried this and then I came to the realization that this will probably work for a wired connection but I'm using WiFi. My wired connections are used for another local subnet without Internet access, so I have to get it to wake on WiFi. I realize that I can just set the stack of Mac minis to just not sleep, but I'm looking for a sleep enabled option. These services don't require initial response speed as once the connection is made they will be active and once they are no longer active they will hopefully go back to sleep. I have a FreeBSD box running avahi-daemon in order to try and wake the Macs with the Bonjour Service but it doesn't seem to work. I tried registering the service as Gordon suggested in the below post, but that just makes it so that there isn't a timeout when discovering services and resolving them. It still doesn't allow ssh connections to port 22 when it's asleep. For reference, I want what seems like what Gordon Davisson explained on this question: Wake on Demand for Apache server in OS X 10.8
