  this is might be really weird, but I have no idea what kinda wizardry of this. Basically, my Visual Studio stopped responding to my changes, it stopped building solution. I can comment code, which would completely ruin the logic of program, and Visual Studio will still run program that I guess it has in memory. It's really annoying, and I have no idea what it is. I keep restarting software, but it's still does the same. It's a licensed software. I was wondering If someone knew what was going on. Thanks!

  I want to provide a trial version of my software. This version should only be evaluated within a specific period of time. Let's say only during January 2011. As this software massively uses the system clock in processing, it would be quite annoying to set the clock to an earlier time to be able to use it over and over. So because of this, I wound't think of a more complicated protection mechanism. So I have thought about exiting after a test like: if (DateTime.Now.Year != 2011 && DateTime.Now.Month != 1) { MessageBox.Show("expired!"); Application.Exit(); } How easy will this be cracked :-) ? Is there a "safe" way to do this ?

• Get the selected file in an Explorer window

  I'd like to know how, if possible, to get the path of the selected file in an open Windows Explorer window. If not, would it at least be possible to get the folder path of an open Windows Explorer window? The end reason I'm doing this, is a software tool I'm writing requires a user to select a file. I figure if they're already moving the file around with Windows Explorer and then start my tool up, it'd be good not to have to make them navigate to the folder again in the file open dialog box. My software would then be able to identify if it's got the right file extension and if so, just ask the user if they want to import that file. Thanks.

• Change Message on Sony Reader to “Do not disconnect”

  When I connect a Sony Reader to an USB port “USB connected” is shown on the Reader. When the Sony “Reader Library” software is started this message changes to “Do not disconnect”. I want to implement this in a software tool to. There seems to be no file locked. Perhaps it is done via ebookUsb.dll. Does anybody know how this is done from any programming language? I like to see an example.

• Voices disappear when using headphones. [closed]

  How do I declare a variable in C? P.S. I have a pair of SteelSeries Siberia headphones. I've noticed that when watching some films the voices are completely silent, yet when I unplug the headset and listen through my speakers they are there and sound normal. I have no other software that could be interfering with it and it happens regardless of the software I use for playback (I've tried VLC, WMP and Quicktime). It is so strange, and it almost sounds deliberate - the rest of the audio is untouched but voices disappear. The films only have single audio tracks, and it doesn't happen with every film. Can anyone give me any hints as to what could possibly cause this? I am stumped!

• Modify an MP3 slightly to change the data appearence

  I'm thinking about encrypting MP3s in a database, so that when user is downloading them with his software desktop player, only the software can decrypt them. This part is not a problem. The problem is I don't want a user to upload an mp3 to the database, then check which changes have been made to the file so he can reverse-engineer the file or at least see which algorithm is used to encrypt the files. So, user uploads MP3-A, then it becomes MP3-B because it has been modified, and I encrypt it to MP3-C. And when decrypted, it sounds 99.99% like MP3-A. I know MP3 format is lossy, but I wonder if there's a way to convert audio with limited loss, or if I need to forget it right now.

But can I restrict the set of possible categories to only a subset of all categories? If, for example, categories looked like below, how can I restrict the user to only selecting a region subcategory (e.g. Europe, South America, etc). • Macbook OSX applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) works fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my Macbook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted.   Need to share few information regarding SSL certificates and there types, which SSL certificates are widely used etc. There are several SSL certificates available in the market today inorder to secure your domains, multiple subdomains, your applications and code too. Few of the details are mentioned below. CheapSSL certificates available today are Standard Rapidssl certificate, Thwate SSL 123 etc certificates which are basic level certificates. Most of these cheap SSL certificates are domain-validated only and don't provide the greatest trust for your customers. This means you shouldn't use cheap SSL certificates on e-commerce stores or other public-facing sites that require people to trust the site. EV certificates I found Geotrust Truebusinessid with EV certificate which is one of the cheapest certificate available in market today, you can also find Thwate, Versign EV version of certificates. Its designed to prevent phishing attacks better than normal SSL certificates. What makes an EV Certificate so special? An SSL Certificate Provider has to do some extensive validation to give you one including: Verifying that your organization is legally registered and active, Verifying the address and phone number of your organization, Verifying that your organization has exclusive right to use the domain specified in the EV Certificate, Verifying that the person ordering the certificate has been authorized by the organization, Verifying that your organization is not on any government blacklists. SSL WILDCARD CERTIFICATES, SSL Wildcard Certificates are big money-savers. An SSL Wildcard Certificate allows you to secure an unlimited number of first-level sub-domains on a single domain name. For example, if you need to secure the following websites: * www.yourdomain.com * secure.yourdomain.com * product.yourdomain.com * info.yourdomain.com * download.yourdomain.com * anything.yourdomain.com and all of these websites are hosted on the multiple server box, you can purchase and install one Wildcard certificate issued to *.yourdomain.com to secure all these sites. SAN CERTIFICATES, are interesting certificates and are helpfull if you want to secure multiple domains by generating single CSR and can install the same certificate on your additional sites without generating new CSRs for all the additional domains. CODE SIGNING CERTIFICATES, A code signing certificate is a file containing a digital signature that can be used to sign executables and scripts in order to verify your identity and ensure that your code has not been tampered with since it was signed. This helps your users to determine whether your software can be trusted. Scroll to the chart below to compare cheap code signing certificates. A code signing certificate allows you to sign code using a private and public key system similar to how an SSL certificate secures a website. When you request a code signing certificate, a public/private key pair is generated. The certificate authority will then issue a code signing certificate that contains the public key. A certificate for code signing needs to be signed by a trusted certificate authority so that the operating system knows that your identity has been validated. You could still use the code signing certificate to sign and distribute malicious software but you will be held legally accountable for it. You can sign many different types of code. • Play music on iPhone through computer

  Now that I've had my iPhone for a few months, I'm trying an experiment to see if I can't replace the laptop I carry around with my iPhone + internet connected computer. To this end, I've been trying to find a program that will let me play the music on my iPhone through the hardware and software on the host computer. If I recall correctly this was possible a few years ago with the iPod - Linux software like Rhythmbox and Banshee was able to read the music off an iPod and play it through the speakers. I even thought I recalled iTunes itself being capable of this at one time. Now, however, iTunes greys out/disables the music on my iPhone and I can't find any documented support for the iPhone in any other music program. Is this really no longer possible? Am I limited to using the headphone jack to get music to play? (note: I am using an iPhone 3G with the 3.0 software. I am attempting to play music on computers other than the one I sync with) Several replies mention that I should check "manually manage" to do this. I just tried this on a computer that I don't sync my iPhone to and it asked me to erase and sync, which is obviously something I don't want to do. update: OK, I checked the "Manually manage music and videos" box on a computer that I didn't sync to (now known as "Computer A"), and it told me that I needed to erase & sync to cause the changes to have effect, so I did. At this point I'm guessing that my iPhone thinks that it's syncing with that computer. I copied over a few songs using the autofill feature. At this point, Computer A sees the maybe 10 or so songs I've copied using autofill. I then plug my iPhone into my Macbook ("Computer B") which I've been syncing with. At this point, I'm pretty sure that it still thought that all my synced content was still on my iPhone. The "manually manage music and videos" checkbox isn't checked, so I check it and go through a similar process where iTunes erases the synced content and I copy over a playlist. At this point, there's no trace of the songs that I copied over from Computer A. So I plug my iPhone into Computer A - in the Music section are the handful of songs that I had copied over earlier, greyed out and unplayable. To make sure that this wasn't some sort of caching issue, I plugged my iPhone into my sister's Macbook ("Computer C") and it lists the same few, greyed out songs that I had copied over from Computer A. Plugging into Computer B doesn't reveal these songs at all, only the songs that it copied over (these are playable). A few things: This inconsistent behavior is driving me insane. Why would my iPhone report two versions of its contents to different computers? Is there a way to get a computer to completely forget about an iPhone and just resync everything to get everything into a consistent state? Even if I get the phone into a consistent state, I still can't play the files on my phone anywhere but the computer I sync with, which was my original goal. What am I doing wrong? maybe I should read the fine print before I mess with my iPhone So going over this thread with a fine-toothed comb again yields this lovely tidbit in the Apple docs: Note: Even when manually managing, some content may only be available from one library at time. This includes all content on iPhone and video content on iPods. OK, so manually managing is a dead end on the iPhone. Are there any other options? Any unofficial third-party programs or drivers that will work?

• MacBook OS X applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) work fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my MacBook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. From the look of it I'm not sure if it's a permissions error or something? I completely re-installed one of the applications (Appcelerator Titanium). Didn't seem to help. • SQL Server Issue: Could not allocate space for object ... primary filegroup is full

  Trying to figure out a problem at an office that has SQL Server 2005 installed on Windows SBS Server 2008. Here's the setup: It's an office, and the person who set this all up is nowhere to be found. I'm the best hope they have... One of the programs they use on a workstation gives them an error of "Could not allocate space for object 'Billing' in database "MyDatabase" because primary filegroup is full" when trying to save an entry in their software. I searched around for hours, looking for possible solutions. One was to check for available disk space, and another was to defrag. I checked the hard drives on the server, and there is plenty of space free. I also defragged, which may have helped the problem somewhat. It's hard to say, because it seems like with the nature of the error, if you try over and over you might get it to actually save. My next step was to try to see if autogrowth was enabled on the database. This would seem to be a likely / possible solution, but I can't access the database! If I run the SQL Management Studio, I can log in as my Windows user and view the list of databases. However, if I try to do anything (actually view the database, view the properties, add or edit users), I get errors that I don't have permission. For what it's worth, I also tried runing Management Studio as Administrator, in case that would help. No difference, though. Now, what I'm guessing is going on -- from my limited knowledge of SQL and from reading online -- is that though I'm logged in as a Windows administrator, that account does NOT have SQL access. I do see a list of SQL users, including SA, but I again don't have permission to add one or to change the password on an existing one. And nobody at the office has any idea what the SQL passwords could be. So... here's my thinking thus far: 1 - The "Could not allocate" error likely points to a database that needs to be allowed to autogrow. Especially since I verified there is plenty of free space and the HD has been defragmented. 2 - Enabling autogrow would be very easy to do if I had the proper access within SQL Management Stuido. I'm guessing that if I followed this guide, I would be able to then log in to the SQL server via Management Studio with the proper permissions, and would be able to enable autogrow (or simply view the status of the existing database), and hopefully solve the "Could not allocate space" problem! So I guess I have a few questions: 1 - Would you guys agree with my "diagnosis"? Think I'm barking up the right tree? 2 - Is there any risk at all in hurting / disabling / wrecking the current SQL database or setup with me going through the guide to regain SQL access? I understand that per the guide, I would have to temporarily shut down SQL, so obviously it wouldn't be accessible during that time. But it wouldn't be worth the risk if there's a chance I could mess anything up... Like I said, the workstations ARE currently accessing the database somehow, but nobody knows with what login info or anything. Basically, it's set up, it works (usually), but if they had to reload the software, nobody would know how. Any feedback would be appreciated!! The problem is such that it's not an emergency for them, but an annoyance. If I could fix it, it would be wonderful. • Where should I start with debugging my exchange server?

  I'm (foolishly?) attempting to install Exchange on top of Windows Server 2008 (64-bit) over Virtual Box running on Mac OSX Lion. Everything went smoothly until I got to the "Readiness Checks" tab. Readiness failed spectacularly on Hub Transport Role and Mailbox Role prereqs. Before I go too far down the rabbit hole in attempting to remedy this, I was hoping I could get some input on where to start in all of this. I already set up the following Active Directory roles, but it didn't seem to help: Active Directory Domain Services Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services I also enabled an Application Server role. Those three are the only roles I've set up-- I cannot locate within Server Manager the Organization Manager role or any of the other roles referenced in the list of borkedness below. Is this a typical experience in Exchange installation? Is there a tutorial created by somebody outside of Microsoft? • MS Securily Essentials efficiency / usage, suspicious processes

  I recently noticed that my (originally pretty fast) Windows 7 Pro laptop started getting slow and using a lot of CPU power for no apparent reason. A full scan by Microsoft Security Essentials revealed nothing. After some investigation, I found multiple instances of a strange process called urpev.exe and a couple of similar exe files sitting in subdirectories of Users//AppData/Roaming (this particular one was in a folder called Xyceowme). Description: "Mescrosift Visaal Studie 2010". Company name: "Mesrosift Corporatien". Is it a virus or something? :) Now, all of these exe files were scheduled to be started from the Task Scheduler by tasks with names like "Security Center Update - 1291373911" and similar. My user name was listed as the author of the tasks. I disabled the tasks, restarted the computer in safe mode and moved all of the exe files to quarantine for further investigation. All of this was done last night. I just scanned the files with Security Essentials again (not updated since yesterday) in the quarantine location and this time it found PWS:Win32/Zbot.gen!plock in urpev.exe (but not in the other exe files, which are most likely viruses, too). Category: Password Stealer Description: This program is dangerous and captures user passwords. Another strange process is browser.exe (not chrome.exe) by Google Inc., described as Google Chrome. I uninstalled Chrome but it's still there. It runs out of Users\\AppData\LocalLow\UIVoice\ToolMedium\browser.exe and if I move it in safe mode, it just reappears there, and multiple instances run. Needless to say, it I kill it, it just runs again. Couldn't see anything in Task Scheduler, but found a couple of references to it in the Registry Editor: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/LowRegistry/Audio/PolicyConfig/PropertyStore/ HKEY_USERS/S-1-5-21-1685709306-872053864-2599010960-1002/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/LowRegistry/Audio/PolicyConfig/PropertyStore/ Maybe it's a legit process, but seems kind of strange. For the time being, I suspended the process and killed all of the child processes when I booted up the laptop. I used Security Essentials to scan the system periodically, but obviously it's not effective at least against one virus. I had the "real-time protection" turned off. Would it help if it were turned on and how much of a nuisance would it be? I wonder if there is a better alternative to Security Essentials. Over the years I've used multiple antivirus products at home and especially at work and was not very happy with any of them. Apparently, asking for software recommendations or comparisons is taboo here, but I will mention that I installed Malware Bytes and it was able to find an quarantine a bunch of suspicious files, and at least some of which were truly infected, but when it scans the bogus security center update executables from Mesrosift Corporatien, it finds nothing wrong. Also, any thoughts on the browser.exe mystery? Neither MS Security Essentials nor Malware Bytes found anything wrong with that file. However, after I ran a Malware Bytes scan and quarantined everything it found suspicious and rebooted the laptop, the process did not run.

• Choice and setup of version control

  I am about to set up an new laptop and in the process transition to a new version control system as part of a general cleanup. Currently I use a centralized version control system (yes it is VSS, and yes I know all the pro's and con's of that system, but as a single user system it works well for me). I have very little requirements for a new system and I am free to choose among any of the current mainstream players, but cost constraints will push me towards oss. Some of my requirements are: Runs on a single machine (ie the laptop in question) under windows I am not sharing things with other developers or workers - this is more for my own historical benefits. I want to version source code, documentation and binary files I have a large hierarchy of projects that are unrelated (see below) I have files within the hierarchy that don't need to be controlled (but could be) Some projects use Visual Studio, so some integration there could be nice. There could be some sharing of files between jobs. I generally only need a small about of branching in code files The directory hierarchy that I have at the moment is somewhat like: Root | |--Customer #1 | | | |--Job #1 | | | | | |--Data files received from Customer for Job (not controlled) | | |--Documentation files (controlled) | | |--Project information files (not controlled - but could be) | | |--Software Project Files (controlled) | | |--Scratch dir for job (not controlled) | | | |--Job #2 | | (same structure as above) | |--Customer #2 | |.. | |--Cusmtomer #n |.. Currently I have about 22 customers with differing numbers of projects underneath them. At the moment I have a single VSS repository based at the root of the directory structure. If I kept with a centralized system (ie SVN) I believe that I should keep the same approach and continue with a single repository based from the root dir. Is this a valid approach? However if I move to a distributed tool then I am unsure of how I should handle the situation. My initial guess is that I should not have a repository based on the root of my entire directory structure - but that is a guess so I really don't know how valid it is. Should I pitch a distributed approach at the Root, Customer, Job or sub-Job directory level? Also what I am not clear on with distributed tools (and perhaps with SVN as well), is if I can branch parts of a repository. For example, I can see branching source code in software projects as being useful, but branching my documentation as not being useful. So if I pitch a repository at the Job level, can I just branch the Software Project Files? Or would all files in that Job be branched? Every time I look at distributed tools I get a nagging feeling that they are not suited to my style of setup. I am uncomfortable with idea of having to manually set up something like 50 to 80 separate repositories (if I pitch at the Job level, or 20+ if at the Customer level) within my directory hierarchy. This feeling also extends to having all those repositories scattered around as well - however I do have a backup strategy that I trust, so this latter feeling is pretty well unfounded. • SNTP, why do you mock me?!

  --- SOLVED SEE EDIT 5 --- My w2k3 pdc is configured as an authoritative time server. Other servers on the domain are able to sync with it if I manually specify it in the peer list. By if I try to sync from flags 'domhier', it wont resync; I get the error message The computer did not resync because no time data was available. I can only think that it is not querying the pdc. I also tried setting the registry as shown here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/193825). But no luck (I have not restarted the server, I am hoping I wont have to since it is the pdc) If you would like any further information on my config, please let me know. Edit 1: I have set the w32time service config AnnouceFlags to 0x05 as documented here www.krr.org/microsoft/authoritative_time_servers.php and a number of other places. The PDC syncs to an external time source (ntp). I can get the stripchart on the client from the pdc no problems. The loginserver for the host I am trying to configure is shown as the pdc. Edit 2: The packet capture has revealed something interesting. The client is contacting the correct server, and getting a valid response but I still get the same error message. Ok so I was reading about people with similar problems, some mentioned w32time server settings applied by GPO, but I tested this early on and there were no settings applied to this service by gpo. Others said that the reporting software may not be picking up some old gpo settings applied. So I searched the registry for all w32time instaces. I came across an interesting key that indicated there may be some other ntp software running on the server. Sure enough, I look through the installed software list and there the little F*&%ER is. • Hardware recommendations / parts list for a modern, quiet ZFS NAS box - 2011-Feb edition [closed]

  I want to build some really reliable storage for my data, and it seems that ZFS is the only filesystem at the moment that does live checksumming. That rules out DroboPro, so I'm looking to building a quiet ZFS NAS that would start with 4 2TB or larger hard drives. I'd like this system to be very reliable and relatively future-proof for 2-3 years, so I'm willing to invest some $$$ and buy higher end components. I did see questions here and on other forums about low-cost servers, but I'm not looking for those. I'd be super happy to go for an off-the-shelf solution, but I haven't found one that's quiet. I started doing the research (summarized on my wiki), but I realized that it just gets too complicated for what I know as a software dude, and I'm entering the analysis paralysis area. At this point, I'm basically looking for a parts list for a configuration that will work (and is modern), and I know there are folks around here who are way more competent than me. I've built computers and am comfortable assembling one and messing with *nix; I can follow guides; I just want to end the decision process for the hardware and software configuration. What I've researched so far (not that these are very modern components): Case: I think I've settled on the Antec Twelve Hundred case because it cools well, is quiet, and simply has 12 bays that allow elastic mounting. The SilverStone Raven is its counter-candidate, but I find its construction quite odd. For the PSU, I'm torn between Antec CP-850 and Nexus RX-8500, but I did this research more than a year ago. The Nexus has a very uniform power profile, and I'd rather not have the Antec spin up and down based on load. On the other hand, I'm not sure how often my file server will draw more than 400W under use. For the hard drives, I've read that WD Black drives are actually WD RE3 with a software setting changed. I'd also like to buy different drive types, not just 4 WDs. Recommendations? Right now I have a 2TB Hitachi Deskstar 7K300. For the motherboard, CPU and RAM I have no idea, other than the RAM must be ECC. I already asked a question here about ECC RAM, but I was misguided and was looking for a motherboard that would support USB 3.0 as well. I've learned to go with eSATA, or worry about USB later. Then there's the (liquid) cooling, Wi-Fi card, and FreeBSD vs. OpenSolaris Express. Lastly, I'm wondering if I can make this PC into a media server by adding a Blu-ray drive and a good sound card. But support for Blu-Ray is spotty on Linux, and I don't know if Windows 7 on VirtualBox would get sufficient hardware access to output HDMI or SPDIFF signals. (Running OpenSolaris virtualized is not an option because of the reliability risk.) Then there are HDCP concerns. Suggestions on that would be appreciated as well, but I don't want us to get sidetracked. A specific shopping list on the core components would be great, so I can start ordering, and in the meantime educate myself with regards to the other issues. Finally, I think this could become a great FAQ for those technically inclined to build their own ZFS server, but confused by the dizzying array of options out there, and I promise to compile the results and share my experience building and benchmarking the server.

• Attempting Unauthorized operation - SQL 2008 R2 install

  I've been banging against this for a few days. Keep getting this unauthorized error when trying to install SQL 2008 R2 on a Windows 7 machine. I've changed permissions on the key, does not fix... Created an admin user, gave specific permissions on that key, does not fix... Disabled all firewalls, installed from a local admin, does not fix... • Issues Converting Plain Text Into Microsoft Word Bulleted Lists

  I'm a programmer. I hate status reports. I found a way to live with it. While I am working in my IDE ( Visual Slickedit ) I keep a plain text file open in one of the file/buffer tabs. As I finish things I just jot down a quick note into that file. At the end of the week that becomes my weekly status report. Example entries: The Datatables.net plugin runs very slowly in IE 8 with more than 2,000 records. I changed the way I did the server side code to process the data to make less work for the plugin to get decent performance for the IE 8 users. I made a class to wrap data from the new data collection objects into the legacy data holder objects. This will let the new database code be backward compatible with the legacy code until we can replace it. I found the bug reported by Jane. The software is fine. The database we use for the test site has data that is corrupted in a way it wouldn't be for production site At the end of the month I go back to each weekly *.txt file and paste all of the entries into a MS Word file for a monthly report. I give the monthly report to a liason to the contracting company who has to compile everyone's monthly reports into a single MS Word 2007 document. His problem, soon to be my problem, comes when he highlights my paragraphs like the ones above to put bullets in front of my paragraphs. When he highlights my notes to put bullets in front of them with MS Word 2007, Word rearranges the text a bit and the new line chars/carriage returns stagger the text so the text is no longer in neat chunks. It just puts some kind of newline character in anyway. Searching/Replacing those chars in the text files has the result of destroying the paragraphs. Once my notes are pasted into MS Word, Word automatically translates them into paragraph breaks. Searching/Replacing them there has similar results. Blank lines separating the notes disappears. One big mess. What I would like is to be able to keep adding my status notes to a text file as I am now, but do something different when I paste the notes into MS Word such that my liason can select the text, hit the bulleting command and NOT have the staggered text as shown above.
