How to make a Windows Vista boot / recovery cd from a running system without using an original CD / DVD

I have just repaired a friends computer (replaced motherboard) and now I am trying to repair the Windows (Windows Vista) partitions. Unfortunately, probably due to the fact that he tried to start it several times after the old motherboard had stopped working (no signal on video) now the partition table or the file systems (or both?) appear to be damaged. I managed to boot Windows a couple of times but could not complete the boot. I tried to repair the partition table and file systems using Linux RIP (booting from USB stick) but the Linux utilities say that the file system is damaged and I should run chkdsk /f from Windows. So I now need a Windows boot CD from which I can boot and run chkdsk or any other Windows utilities that can repair the file system. Is there an easy way to create such a CD? Or can I download it for free somewhere? All the links to Windows Vista boot / repair CD's I have found on the internet refer to non-free stuff. Any hint? EDIT I have a working laptop with Windows Vista installed. So one solution would be to make a bootable CD or USB from it so that I can boot the desktop and run the repair utilities. However, I do not have the Windows Vista installation DVD, because both computers were bought with Windows pre-installed.

Why is windows not able to create a system partition?

I'm reinstalling Windows 7 64 bit, and I encountered an issue I've never seen before. I have a legit copy of Win 64 Professional, and I've installed it probably a half dozen times on this machine in the past without a problem. Googling the error only brings me to issues with people who are upgrading to win7. The drive itself seems to not have a problem. I can mount it on other systems and I can create an NTFS partition on it on other machines. I can install Ubuntu on it without any issues. Additionally, if I try using my alternate backup hard drive, the installer gives the same error. I have run diskpart from the setup page and clean seems to report that all is well. However, I cannot get past the screen below, which says Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. This happens regardless of whether or not the disk space is already allocated. What is causing this? How do I solve or get past this?

Are ZFS snapshots + S3 a viable backup system for several VMs and general fileserver storage?

I've been tasked with setting up a backup system for my small office (around 12 people). Most of our production stuff is on the AWS cloud, so what I need to back up are some small office/development files (under 100G right now), plus our operational VMs and development, which round out to a bit under 1T. I just need something reliable, convenient, and straightforward. I'm comfortable with Linux, FreeBSD, and to some extent Solaris 10, so I'm leaning toward a full server rather than an appliance system ala Openfiler or FreeNAS. What I'm contemplating is a small fileserver for general storage and nightly backups of the virtual machines, followed up by an offsite backup to Amazon's S3 storage service. It'd be the usual incremental backups nightly and full backup weekly. My question is if using ZFS snapshots, both locally and dumped to S3 via 'zfs send [-i]', is a viable backup tool? Or should I stick to using Duplicity, or some other method entirely? ZFS snapshots on the internal fileserver/backup machine sound like a perfect way to provide quick and convenient data recovery, so I'm likely to go with that for local redundancy. (If you folks see scenarios where relying on ZFS snapshots would be worse than a more traditional archiving backup, feel free to convince me.) But are snapshots flexible enough to lean on for recovery from the loss of my backup server? Or am I better off with something more traditional? (feel free to recommend free or commercial backup solutions you favor.)

System randomly freezes yet mouse still moves, SSD out of reallocatable sectors, should I replace it?

This problem has lasted for the past 48 hours. The first time it happened, a program I was running stopped responding, so I tried to end it from task manager. The processes at first were listed fine until hovered upon. Eventually, despite the mouse still being able to move, after a few persisting clicks the mouse finally stopped moving. The screen went blank shortly thereafter. The second time it occurred, items on the screen stopped responding - hovering over the taskbar or such wouldn't elicit a response. Sound would still play however. Eventually, the mouse became unresponsive and the system restarted itself. I suspect that it may be a problem of my SSD drive. After looking through some Google search results, I downloaded HDTunePro to determine if there's a problem with the drive. Results returned a problem of reallocated sector count. An error scan also revealed 48 bad sectors. Also, an attempt to backup the contents of the most important areas of the drive returned a few explorer "Error: cannot read source from disk" errors. Should I ditch the drive and use another drive or is there anything that can be done to repair the drive? Dual hard drive Windows 7 system, modified the registry to get programs to install on second drive, now IE doesn't work

I have a dual hard drive Windows 7 system, Windows is installed on an SSD (C:) and I modified the registry to try to force programs to install on second HDD drive (another letter). The registry edits are pretty simple, just a few keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion to change the drive letter. For the most part the system is very fast and works great, but IE doesn't work anymore. With IE10, it opens for a flash with a white window then closes. I tried installed IE11 which opens a white window for a few seconds, doesn't respond, then crashes. I've tried all the solutions I could find. This includes resetting the IE settings, "uninstalling" and re-installing IE, which is just turning it on and off in "Turn Windows Features on or off", copying the Program Files\Internet Explorer files onto both/either drives, changing the registry keys back to use C:, lots of rebooting, and safe mode. Nothing has worked. I don't see errors in the event viewer, but I might not know what to look for. Any ideas on how to get IE running? I don't need IE for daily browsing, I just need it for cross-browser testing on sites I build and on the rare occasion a page only works in IE. I don't really want to use a virtual machine, but would be ok with something standalone like tredosoft's, but I'm not aware of something like that for current versions of IE.

Suggestions for cleaning up the mess after removing the "system tool" virus?

Hi! Last night I got infected with the "System Tool" virus. For those who don't know it disallows the user from executing any software, changes the desktop, stops all security software from running, and continually requests that you buy a Trojan security software. It took me a few hours but I finally managed to remove the software. To do this I went into my Ubuntu partition and searched out files that had been created around the time that I got infected and deleted the executable. Then I went back into my W7 partition and ran an MBAM full scan, an MSE full scan, an AVG bootable USB scan, and ran a ClamAV scan from my Ubuntu partition (Together these found 3 more infected executables). I also ran a Ccleaner full sweep and the registry cleaner just in case. I think I have found all of the problems but am still concerned that there might be a payload leftover from the virus that I didn't find. Do you have any suggestions of what else I can do to be sure. Just FYI I use W7 64 bit and MSE as my primary antivirus. I was using chrome when I got infected and it seems that it was due to a slightly out of date Java installation (MSE gave me a warning that the website had used a Java exploit and then my desktop changed to the classic "System Tools" desktop) Thank you very much for your help.

How to make a redundant desktop system with daily snapshots? (Is btrfs ready for use?)

I want to configure a desktop system in which the home filesystem would be redundant (e.g. RAID-1), and would have weekly snapshots taken. I've already done this with ZFS, the snapshot system is wonderful, and with send/recv you can easily create backups on external media. Unfortunately, at that point, I want GNU+Linux and not FreeBSD or Solaris, so I'm looking for suggestions for good alternatives. I reckon that my alternatives are: btrfs - it seems to be exactly what I need, it has snapshots and commands that allow you to easily replicate zfs send. Yet all documentation mentions that it's still experimental. I can't seem to find any actual reports on its reliability or usability issues. Can you point me to any information on that issue that could clarify whether it would be a possible choice? I have a large preference for this option, mostly because I don't want to reformat the drives when btrfs becomes ready, but I there's no information on whether it's usable at all, whether it's a silly idea to use it, etc. The question that I cannot get the answer to is what does "experimental" mean. lvm snapshots and ext4 - preferably not, since it can consume an awful amount of space when new files are created. Creating 200 GB files requres 200 GB free space and 200 GB additionally for snapshots. I also have found it unreliable -- failed metadata rewrite results in an unreadable PV. I'm wondering how btrfs would compare here. A single filesystem (ext4) on a RAID-1 array with custom COW snapshots with hardlinks (like cp -al). That's my current preference if I can't use btrfs. So how experimental btrfs is, which should I choose, and do I have any other options? What if I don't keep external incremental backups, would that affect my choice?

Windows 7 system freezes: would like to know if they could be related to MrxSmb, Event ID 8003 errors

First, this question centers around a home network. Is it okay to ask here? Or should I go to SuperUser? (I see less answers over there, but I'll go there if that would be more appropriate.) Network setup: 1 Machine running XP Pro 1 Machine running Win7 Ultimate Comcast router Linksys WRT610N Wireless router The Win7 machine goes into a total, unrecoverable system freeze frequently. I was tearing out my hair trying to ascertain a cause, but I noticed that it usually seems to correspond with performing operations on the shared folders on the XP machine. The last 2 occasions that the Win7 machine froze, I saw this entry for Event ID 8003 from source MrxSmb in the Event log of the XP machine: The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer WIN7_COMPUTER that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{320B32A7-FED9. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced. My question is twofold: Could this cause a Win7 system freeze? If so, what could I configure differently on my network to stop these conflicts over who is the master browser? Thank you for your help!

Stuck with Apache2

I cant finish Apache2 install, also cannot remove it. It has blocked my dpkg, now I cant get no installations in or out. I even tried distro upgrade, but it did still has broken dpkg.. Why is my machine unable to mount my SMB drives ("CIFS VFS: Error connecting to socket. Aborting operation", return code -115)?

I have a machine running Precise (12.04 x64), and I cannot mount my SMB drives (I have 3, we'll call them public, private and download). It used to work (a week or two ago) and I didn't touch fstab! The machine hosting the shares is a commercial NAS, and I'm not seeing anything that would indicate it's an issue with the NAS. I have an older machine which I updated to Precise at the same time (both fresh installed, not dist-upgrade), so should have a very similar configuration. It is not having any problems. I am not having problems on windows machines/partitions either, only one of my Precise machines. The two machines are using identical entries in fstab and identical /etc/samba/smb.conf files. I don't think I've ever changed smb.conf (has never mattered before). Wireless internet is connected to an open network but has no internet

I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop yesterday and it connected to the wireless fine. Then I took it to school, put it on their wired connection, downloaded some stuff, and now the wireless doesn't work. At first it would detect networks, but not connect. I restarted it and now it can connect, but it acts like it doesn't have internet in the browser. Wired connection still works fine on it. I know it isn't the network because my ipad is working on the wireless connection fine. I found another solution on here switching the security settings for the wireless, but this is the apartment's wireless so they have it open, and I won't be able to mess with it at all. I click on cancel and go to the red circle on the top right on my screen and try to update from there and receive this error After that I just get thrown these errors So now I can't add or remove any programs on my system. Mysql performance problem & Failed DIMM

Hi I have a dedicated mysql database server which has been having some performance problems recently, under normal load the server will be running fine, then suddenly out of the blue the performance will fall off a cliff. The server isn't using the swap file and there is 12GB of RAM in the server, more than enough for its needs. After contacting my hosting comapnies support they have discovered that there is a failed 2GB DIMM in the server and have scheduled to replace it tomorow morning. My question is could a failed DIMM result in the performance problems I am seeing or is this just coincidence? My worry is that they will replace the ram tomorrow but the problems will persist and I will still be lost of explanations so I am just trying to think ahead. The reason I ask is that there is plenty of RAM in the server, more than required and simply missing 2GB should be a problem, so if this failed DIMM is causing these performance problems then the OS must be trying to access the failed DIMM and slowing down as a result. Does that sound like a credible explanation? Linq to SQL NullReferenceException's: A random needle in a haystack!

I'm getting NullReferenceExeceptions at seemly random times in my application and can't track down what could be causing the error. I'll do my best to describe the scenario and setup. Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated! C# .net 3.5 Forms Application, but I use the WebFormRouting library built by Phil Haack (http://haacked.com/archive/2008/03/11/using-routing-with-webforms.aspx) to leverage the Routing libraries of .net (usually used in conjunction with MVC) - intead of using url rewriting for my urls. My database has 60 tables. All Normalized. It's just a massive application. (SQL server 2008) All queries are built with Linq to SQL in code (no SP's). Each time a new instance of my data context is created. I use only one data context with all relationships defined in 4 relationship diagrams in SQL Server. the data context gets created a lot. I let the closing of the data context be handled automatically. I've heard arguments both sides about whether you should leave to be closed automatically or do it yourself. In this case I do it myself. It doesnt seem to matter if I'm creating a lot of instances of the data context or just one. Hi, I have a ASP.Net MVC 2 web site, which can be visited by http://localhost/Admin/ContentMgr/ in ASP.Net Development Server from Visual Studio 2010(RTM Retail). When I try to deploy the site to Windows 2008 R2 , IIS 7.5 , the url always return 404. First, my application pool is running on .Net 4.0, and Integration mode. WebClient.DownloadDataAsync is freezing my UI

Hi, I have in my Form constructor, after the InitializeComponent the following code: using (WebClient client = new WebClient()) { client.DownloadDataCompleted += new DownloadDataCompletedEventHandler(client_DownloadDataCompleted); client.DownloadDataAsync("http://example.com/version.txt"); } When I start my form, the UI doesn't appears till client_DownloadDataCompleted is raised. The client_DownloadDataCompleted method is empty, so there's no problem there. What I'm doing wrong? How is supposed to do this without freezing the UI? Thanks for your time. Best regards. How get <body> element from the html which one have as a string

Hello! I have a stupid problem. An jQuery.ajax request return me a full HTML text as a string. I receive such response in an case of error on the server. The server give me an error description which I want to place inside of the corresponding place of my current page. So now the question: I have a string contains full HTML document (which is not an XML!!! see <hr> element inside). I need to have for example only BODY part as a jQuery object. Then I could append it to the corresponding part of my page. RSA encryption/ Decryption in a client server application

Hi guys, probably missing something very straight forward on this, but please forgive me, I'm very naive! Have a client server application where the client identifies its self with an RSA encrypted username & password. Unfortunately I'm getting a "bad padding exception: data must start with zero" when i try to decrypt with the public key on the client side. I'm fairly sure the key is correct as I have tested encrypting with public key then decrypting with private key on the client side with no problems at all. Just seems when I transfer it over the connection it messses it up somehow?! Using PrintWriter & BufferedReader on the sockets if thats of importance. EncodeBASE64 & DecodeBASE64 encode byte[] to 64base and vice versa respectively. Any ideas guys??
